【英国留学生就业】留学生进顶级咨询公司很难?这是我拿Bain贝恩offer的全经历!2Bain的面试全过程投递简历其实我已开始没有寻找consulting的工作,一直是在看IB和fund这些工作,是无意在网上海投的时候看了Bain的要求,主要是线性回归以及analysis的要求,还有工作时间1~3年,我比较符合要求,而且business management,leadership还有people skills还都很强,就投递了简历。
一面在投递简历之后2个月通知了一面,当时我都不记得投递过简历了,后来一面主要是HR问了一些简历上的问题,包括Why consulting? Why Bain? Your strength and weakness等基本问题,非常basic。
二面第二轮是三对一的群面,Behavior方面问了leadership和people skills的问题,我就以自己在学校剧院的社会工作经历进行阐述,如何解决组员之间的矛盾,他们非常感兴趣,问了许多细节的问题。
Technical方面对于线性回归以及时间序列进行非常细致的提问,包括如何进行detect certain errors,非常的细致。
三面不到一周就迎来了第三轮面试,是关于case interview,我之前因为实在金融实习,所以根本没有case经历,我就准备了一些麦肯锡的case,训练自己的case study反应速度和技巧,而面试两天前打电话介绍说是group case,于是我network到BCG的朋友进行了指点,得到的宗旨是:be a leader or a contributor,我为了做一个好的contributor于是准备了accounting、corporate finance以及management知识,但是在正式面试的时候发生了很精彩的事情!在面试大楼下面的starbucks中,因为戴的表很漂亮所以吸引了一个大叔,而当我推门进入面试office时,对面赫然坐着就是他,所以当在选leader和timer的时候尽管我没有举手,他就直接任命我为timer了,我旁边同样没有举手的就被任命为leader了。

【海归招聘】McKinsey JIA面经——从一面到终面今年的1月份很幸运的收到了McKinsey JIA (Junior Information Analyst)的offer,结束job hunting,一直想写面经的,拖到现在实在不好意思。
今天是个特殊的日子,嘿嘿,自私一下,把耽搁了很久的帖子发出来,积攒rp,同时bless自己,呵呵,希望对以后找工作的同学有所帮助 : ) 有关consulting的内容之前的大牛们已经写过经典帖子了,大家可以搜一下:一篇是Alex大哥的《Case Interview In Point—通往咨询的必经之路》,还有一篇是teclast的《Looking Beyond the Case Interview》,我就不赘述了~~~ 说一下当时面试的具体流程吧:1)宣讲会 check了一下,宣讲会是在10月26号晚上6:30,光彪楼,那叫people mountain people sea阿,人气果然超高……比较impress的是partner回答问题时候逻辑清晰,滴水不漏。
还有就是介绍了一下两个职位:BA(Business Analyst)和JIA(Junior Information Analyst)。
大家可能对BA了解更多一点,就是传说中的大牛们去的地方,跟着project经常出差,JIA就是我等的职位了,呵呵,一般back office比较多,收集数据分析之类的,support BA,不会那么累,不过当然在各方面学到的东西肯定不如BA多,ms JIA 在1~2年可能会转为BA。
(以上内容不确切之处还请大牛们勘误~~~)2)一面(电面)又check了一下,电面是在11/21,恩~当时自己在回学校的车上睡觉被手机铃声惊醒,然后apologize了一下,希望对方10min之后再call过来,匆忙的在后面一站下了车,找安静点的地方接电话。
整个电面过程也就5~10min的样子。

总的来说,“咨询”就是某一领域的专业人士对其专属知识的有偿转移。
Consulting:非常吸引MBA、CFA和商学院毕业生的职业。
为什么这个造就了无数冷笑话的职业这么吸引人?讲一个冷笑话来开场:换一个灯泡需要多少咨询顾问?一个答案:没人知道,因为他们没法通过自己设计的可行性测试另一个答案:三个,一个换灯泡,一个记录过程,最后一个指导他们如何按照程序来换灯泡或者做记录过程。
最经典的答案:六个,一个换灯泡,然后剩下的五个在旁边告诉他如何能换的更好。
咨询业是有最多MBA毕业生进入的行业。
虽然咨询业在制造上面的冷笑话方面无人能敌(当然,前提是要忘记律师这个行业),还是有最多比重的MBA毕业生加入它。
这个行业的领军人物是MBB:也就是McKinsey & Co.麦肯锡,Bain & Co. 贝恩和Boston Consulting Group 波士顿咨询公司。

大学的时候你参加了什么活动?有做什么有关未来career的准备吗?我和传统人走的路子不太一样。
大学期间我一直忙着做research,而不是找工作或者networking。
(怎么找research?)大一刚进UNC的时候,我有research scholarship,所以去学校之前开始reach out可能的research。
大一去的时候,做了china health and nutrition study。
大二有了programming background之后,因为UNC有很多research的机会,学校也有招volunteer,我就跑去面试了,最后拿到了一个医院的data analyst。
之前一直就执着于做research,大三就开始参加各种面试了。
其实挺苦恼的,意识到搞policy讲不过美国人,做research又做不过master或者PhD。
而NGO 也一般不给国际生sponsorship。
后来还是靠教授们左推荐右推荐的,最后去到了美国的疾控中心CDC。
可以谈谈你当时找工作时候的经历吗?我很喜欢解决问题,做research的初衷,也不希望只是publication,而是希望变成application。
希望用自己的skill去真正的解决事情,同时我也希望和人交流。

Q1: 本科和master都学习Industrial and Operations Engineering,最后却选择了consulting作为职业发展的方向,为什么会这样选择?
选择consulting其实对我来说并不是一个很大的转型,大家可能都会觉得做consulting 的大多都是business school出身的,但其实我身边也有蛮多Engineering的同学也在做consulting,我们分析问题会非常谨慎,特别注重细节,做事情会比较hands-on一些,其实这些都是我在engineering school学到的东西。
对于consultant刚开始来讲的话,需要有很强的能力去build model, 把客户的很多信息都转化成有用资讯,而且我之前有在不同的公司实习过,做过supply-chain consultant,还有做过internal consultant,虽然形式不同,但consultant的本质都是沟通。
对我来说,选择consulting是很开心的决定。
Q2:你觉得做consultant以来,面临的最大的挑战是什么?
这是我的第一份工作,consultant本身要求你是比较independent的,有很多的主动权,这个过程让我明白,什么是我应该prioritize的,锻炼时间管理技能很重要。
一开始难免会不适应环境,节奏太快啊等等,工作之外自己也没有太多自己的时间,还要合理manage manager’s expectation。
这些都是挑战,但慢慢做好了之后就有了自己的主动权。
Q3:在Bain现在做associate consultant,主要负责的方向是哪些?会处理哪些case?
至今的三个月来,我做了两个任务,第一个任务是private equity。
我的第一个client
是做hedge fund,他们是要acquire另外一家上市公司,所以我们要去分析market,还有未来是否能sustainable,这个公司本身是否是一个很好的position,买了之后这是否是一个很好的price,能否能cut cost,要有全面的分析。
第二个case是帮一个医药公司,这家公司刚刚spin off,他就有很多东西是要建立自己的思维,我做portfolio,分析regulation对各个的disease area的影响,分析一下除了目前的市场之外,还应该有哪些比较promising 的投入点。
我也不需要了解太多finance 的具体的知识,我更关心的是这些知识对我client 公司做decision的影响,更加的result-driven。
Q4:之前在国内做Supply Chain Consultant和Lean Consultant的经验,对于你现在能够在Bain这个全球知名的咨询公司做associate consultant有哪些影响?
这两段实习,一方面都让我真正进入consulting行业,初步了解了consultant。
一个是做health care, 一个是做supply chain, 不一样的领域,但都让我慢慢对consultant有了极大的兴趣。
这些影响也是潜移默化的,我无法具体说出每一次工作带给了我怎样的skill set。
而且这些经验,也向potential recruiter证明了有consulting的经验,而且面试经验也得积累。
Q5:在求职大型的咨询公司时,简历有哪些格外需要注意的东西?
consultant的resume简历筛选还是很严格的。
我认为关键在于,不要写任何无用的东西,比如hobby, interests等等。
因为recruiter 会看的主要在于工作经验,你曾经有没有一些大公司的经历;第二点你有没有什accomplishment ,具体的结果是什么,比如说你做的事情具体帮助team做了什么样的decision。
另外GPA很重要,一个很高的GPA可以证明你是academically excellent的,recruiter 也会很看重这一点。
Q6:University of Michigan Ross School of Business 的alumni board 一定有很多关于networking方面的经验,有没有什么和我们分享的?
对于networking,有时我们会有偏见,会觉得networking有时候会有点突兀,聊些有的没的。
但我觉得实际上,networking的收获其实是很新鲜而有趣的。
我曾经做过leadership conference,邀请成功的人做演讲,我发现其实那些大牛离我们并不遥远,还有就是慢慢学会在别人面前present自己,自我认可。
很多同学其实在networking上有一些局限就是在于,对自己不是很了解,不知道自己的哪些东西让别人特别的impressed,没那么自信,所以这也是我们留学生在国外很少会share自己的point 的原因。
自己的定位,在校的活动经验,让我清晰的了解自己的定位,像我相对而言更喜欢一对一的沟通,也是一个比较好的listener。
所以这是我自己networking的特点,大家也都可以思考一下自己的特点。
recruiting中的networking,是一定要让别人记住你,凸显自己的优势。
争取在target company里有比较熟悉的人。
networking有时不是以数量取胜,有一两个比较熟悉的人可以refer你,或者是面试之后有人愿意推荐你,帮你说话,我不太喜欢pure networking,或者是Transactional的,但我更希望networking中可以真正聆听到了解到一些东西,不是问太多寒暄的东西。
换位思考,让别人喜欢你。
Q7:你有蛮多的顶级咨询公司的面试经历,给我们对比和详细介绍一下他们的面试特点吧,有哪些需要格外注意的。
McKinsey,Bain,BCG 这三家的面试类型都很相似,一开始是关于behavior的,teamwork leadership 之类的问题。
第二部分是case study,我们的case会更加有针对性一些,比如说我们会把一些自己做过的case举例出来,提问一些比较实际并且细节的东西。
对Bain来讲,75%关于case ,25%关于behavior。
你的回答要足够personal,不要重复同样的东西,比如说问你为什么要去bain,但你一直在说bain多么好,就是一个失败的答案。
要讲求自己独特的东西,是个难点但也是加分项。
case回答的难点在于要如何更加的professional and customer-friendly, 也许我们可以很快的计算出结果,可是整个解答的过程你还要present自己,同时逻辑要很清晰很structural。
Q8:最后请给我们也想在consulting道路上发展的小伙伴们一些建议吧!
其实我们在做任何选择,都会受到peer pressure的影响,有时会迷失自己,不知道自己真正想要的是什么。
你要清楚自己为什么要选择这个行业,不要仅仅基于自己过去已经付出了有多么努力,也要考虑你未来的规划。
要把每一次的成就作为起点,而不是终点。
要保持inquiring mind,注重自我提升。
