The structure of MosuoPeople who participate in walking marriage, they do not have any responsibility to each other. The elements for sustaining their relation is love. The male call his lover “A Xia”, and female call the lover “A Zhu”. Even when a pairing may be long term, however, the man will never go to live with the woman's family. Man will continue to live with and be responsible to his previous family, and woman will continue to live with and be responsible to her own family. There will be no sharing of property. Once their feeling become thin out, they can suspend the relations at any time and look for their new partner.Most significantly, when children are born, the father may have little or no responsibility for his offspring. After their child is born, the female family will perform a ceremony and invite the father of the kid to join in. But the father can’t take the kid away, because the kid belongs to the mother’s family. If the father does want to be involved with the upbringing of his children, he will bring gifts to the mother's family, and state his intention to do so.Regardless of whether the father is involved or not, the child will be raised in the mother's family, and take on her family name. 摩梭人是母系社会，在日间，男女很少单独相处，只在聚会上以舞蹈、歌唱的方式对意中人表达心意。
男子若是对女子倾心的话，在日间约好女子后，会在半夜的时候到女子的“花楼”（摩梭成年女性的房间，独立于祖母屋即“家屋”外），传统上会骑马前往，但不能于正门进入花楼，而要爬窗，再把帽子之类的物品挂在门外，表示两人正在约会，叫其他人不要打扰。
然后在天不亮的时候就必须离开，这时可由正门离开。
若于天亮或女方家长辈起床后才离开，会被视为无礼。
走婚的男女，维系关系的要素是爱情，没有经济联系，一旦发生感情转淡或发现性格不合，随时可以切断关系，因此感情自由度较婚姻关系更纯粹，但也因此而使得男女关系较为平等，不似其他民族的婚姻关系中牵系极为复杂的经济社会网络。
走婚是“母系”家庭中重要组成部分。
成年男子“走婚”是一个传宗接代繁衍后裔的途径，只是不同于其他民族夫妇长年生活在一起。
他们是日暮而聚，晨晓而归，暮来晨去。
摩梭人走婚有两种方式：一种叫“阿注”定居婚；一种叫“阿夏”异居婚。
不管那种婚俗都得举行一个古老的仪式，叫“藏巴啦”，意思是：敬灶神菩萨和拜祖宗。
在女方家举行这个仪式，时间一般在半晚，不请客、不送礼，朋友们也不参加。
这个礼仪是由男方家请一证人把求婚者领到女方家，当然是男女青年早已有了感情了，不存在媒妁之言，母舅之命。
他（她）们的母亲及舅舅也了解和默认后才举行，男方家根据自己的经济状况把带来的礼品按规矩放在火塘上方锅桩的平台上及经堂里的神台上，向祖宗行礼，向锅桩行礼，再向长辈及妈妈、舅舅、姐姐行礼，然后接受长辈们及姐妹们的祝福。
送去的礼品按尊长、老少各有一份。

• Today, over 90% of Mosuo people still perform the walking marriage. In a walking marriage, the couples do not marry to each other and both stay in their own matrilineal (母系的）family for their whole life.
