Globalization, for good or ill, is here to stay. But what is globalization? Globalization is an attempt to abolish barriers, especially in trade. In fact, globalization has been around longer than you might think.

Globalization, as a concept, refers both to the "shrinking" of the world and the increased consciousness of the world as a whole. It is a term used to describe the changes in societies and the world economy that are the result of dramatically increased cross-border trade, investment, and cultural exchange. The processes and actions to which the concept of globalization now refers have been proceeding, with some interruptions, for many centuries, but only in relatively recent times has globalization become a main focus of discussion. The current or recently-past epoch of globalization has been dominated by the nation-state, national economies, and national cultural identities. The new form of globalization is an interconnected world and global mass culture, often referred to as a "global village."

经济全球化促进了世界多边贸易体制的形成，从而加快了国际贸易的增长速度，促进了全球贸易自由化的发展，也使得加入到WTO组织的成员以统一的国际标准来规范自己的行为。它不仅对生产超越国界提出了内在要求，也为全球化生产准备了条件，是推动经济全球化的根本动力。
大量的金融业务跨国界进行，世界各主要金融市场在时间上相互接续、价格上相互联动，几秒钟内就能实现上千万亿美元的交易，尤其是外汇市场已经成为世界上最具流动性和全天候的市场。
国际货币基金组织（IMF）在一份报告中指出，“经济全球化是指跨国商品与服务贸易及资本流动规模和形式的增加，以及技术的广泛迅速传播使世界各国经济的相互依赖性增强”。而经济合作与发展组织（OECD）认为，“经济全球化可以被看作一种过程，在这个过程中，经济、市场、技术与通讯形式都越来越具有全球特征，民族性和地方性在减少”。总的来讲，经济全球化是指以市场经济为基础，以先进科技和生产力为手段，以发达国家为主导，以最大利润和经济效益为目标，实现各国市场分工与协作，相互融合的过程。
西方发达国家是经济全球化的主导，能够在经济全球化过程中占有更多的优势，获得更多的利益。
第一，有利于吸引和利用外资，引进世界先进管理理论和经验并实现管理的创新。第二，有利于加速中国工业化进程，提升产业结构。第三，有利于深入地参与国际分工，发挥本国现实和潜在的比较优势，拓展海外市场。第四，可以抓住新技术革命带来的机遇，发挥后发优势，发展高新技术产业，实现经济的跨越式发展。
