(2018·江西重点中学协作体联考)A massive winter storm is expected to begin hitting Massachusetts tonight, dumping up to a foot or more of snow in some areas, while whipping the coast with powerful winds and driving rains, forecasters predict.“It’s got a little bit of everything,” William Babcock, a meteorologist(气象学家) at the National Weather Service in Taunton, said of the postChristmas storm that brought snowstorm conditions to the Ohio Valley before heading east with its mixed bag of snow, sleet, and rain.State Highway Administrator Frank De Paola said more than 4,000 states and snowplows(扫雪车) and salt spreaders were ready to make the roads safer for holiday travelers.“MassDOT will be fully staffed and will be ready to handle this,”De Paola said, nothing that the storm, which should bring snow to most of the state except the Cape and Island before turning into rain tomorrow, is Massachusetts’ first significant snowstorm of this winter season.“There have been events where we have had pretty much freezing, icing concerns, which we have treated with chemicals. But this is the first big event that will call for plowing(清街上的雪),” he said.A high wind watch has been issued for southeastern Massachusetts, including Cape Cod. Forecasters say the wind could reach 60 mph, possibly bringing down power lines. In Worcester, some were busy for severe weather by buying rock salt, shovels and windshield wash, Barrows Hardware president Brain Barrow said. He called the volume(总量) of customers at his Webster Street store very steady on Wednesday morning. “You do get that supermarket effect for sure,” he said of shoppers stocking supplies before a storm. There were no flight delays or cancellations at Logan International Airport in Boston as of day. “Right now, everything’s running normally,”airport spokesman Richard Walsh said. But Walsh said as the day progressed, travelers should contact their airlines directly to check the status of their flights.【解题导语】一场大的暴风雪即将席卷马萨诸塞州,但无论是气象学家、路政人员、普通市民还是超市等都对此次恶劣天气作好了各方面的准备和应对工作。

Women of achievement李仕才一、阅读理解Many years ago, when we were a young couple with two small children, aged 2 and 4,we were practically impecunious. My inlaws lived from hand to mouth,so we didn't expect any help from them.My parents lived a great distance away, and I was too ashamed to let them know about our situation. My husband was trying to earn a living with an old pickup truck, carrying groceries for local shopkeepers, but it was constantly breaking down.It took almost all the money we had to have it fixed. The truck was also the only means of transportation for us.We lived in the countryside, and we always used the back door because the driveway led to it.One winter evening,I stepped outside to take a bag of trash to the barrel and almost tripped over something. It was nearly dark, and I had to bend down to see what it was.I could hardly believe my eyes. There sat a large basket loaded with food.It was heavy,so I called my husband to carry it into the house.Once inside,we discovered two loaves of bread, some butter, several cans of vegetables,a can of orange sauce, and a large turkey. There was so much that I couldn't remember it all,but it was everything we needed to fix a wonderful dinner—everything except potatoes.A little while later I remembered that I hadn't taken the trash to the barrel.By now it was dark,so I had to turn on the yard light—and that's when I spotted a small bag of potatoes sitting on the porch. That dinner was the best I could remember. We weren't able to thank our donators, though, because we never found out who had been so generous in helping a struggling young family.Whoever it was,we are forever grateful.1.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “impecunious”in Paragraph 1?A.Generous. Secret codes(密码)keep messages private. Banks, companies, and government agencies use secret codes in doing business, especially when information is sent by computer.People have used secret codes for thousands of years.1Code breaking never lags(落后)far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography. There are three main types of cryptography.2For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels”spell out the hidden message“Meet me.”3You m ight represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitute a number for each letter, the message “Meet me”would read“13 5 5 20 13 5.”A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book.4For example, “bridge”might stand for “meet”and“out”might stand for “me”.The message“Bridge out”would actuallymean“Meet me.”5However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently.A.It is very hard to break a code without the code book.B.In any language, some letters are used more than others.C.Only people who know the keyword can read the message.D.As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them.E.You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out.F.With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words.G.Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet.方法运用[语篇解读]本文是一篇说明文。

An apple a day keeps the doctor away" is a popular saying in the United States. It may be a common saying, but it is not scientifically confirmed. However, a new study adds to evidence that suggests taking a small amount of aspirin can help keep the doctor away.Peter Elwood is with Cardiff University’s School of Medicine in Britain. Forty years ago, he was involved in the first study to explore the effects of aspirin on the prevention of heart disease. Elwood’s team examin ed 47 studies for evidence that aspirin helped cancer patients. They found there’s fairly consistent evidence of a 15 to 20 percent reduction in death and a reduction in cancer’s spread, by low dose(剂量) aspirin. By low dose, he means 81 milligrams. The study followed cancer patients for five years. Elwood says the evidence is strong that aspirin delays death among cancer patients.Elwood’s team are excited to have this evidence from the study. Elwood adds that it is not a cure but a small sign of better things to come, what he calls a little hope and encouragement. "If you asked me personally what I would do if doctors told me I had cancer, I would say I would have no hesitation in taking it. But I do not recommend it to people. I want them to have the evidence and make their own decisions." The only major risk is that aspirin can cause stomach bleeding. But Elwood says it usually does not cause death. He adds that the evidence points to big health benefits of taking a daily aspirin. So, for some people, the pros might overweigh the cons.1. What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 1?A. Patients should eat apples.B. Apples are popular with Americans.C. Aspirin can be good for health.D. Doctors should use aspirin instead of apples.2. What does Elwood suggest people do?A. The less aspirin, the better.B. Don’t delay in taking aspirin.C. Taking aspirin is a better way to cure cancer.D. Make decisions in the best interest of their own.3.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?A. Aspirin is the best cure for cancer.B. Taking aspirin won’t kill in the long run.C. Taking aspirin does more good than harm.D. The side effect of taking aspirin is strong.【语篇解读】文章介绍每天服用少量的阿司匹林对健康有好处,可以延缓癌症病人的死亡。

Women of achievement一、阅读理解You may not think it very much—a used ice cream tub(纸杯) on the beach,a cigarette butt in the sand. But these little pieces of litter amount to around8.8 million tons of trash in the world's oceans, poisoning and choking sealife, according to figures from the World Wildlife Foundation. Now, in a set of images titled The Price Of Convenience by Waters has shown the destroying effects that casual littering has on creatures. In one image called “your convenience is their extinction”, a sea turtle's shell is hollowed out(掏空) and filled with banana skins, soda cans, and other debris.“It is shocking the amount of trash in the oceans,” Waters, 23, said, describing his project which he has begun a campaign to the WWF. “When you leave litter on the beach, you are treating the ocean like a trash can. When you throw trash over the side of a boat, you're treating the ocean like a trash can. And when you leave litter at a beach festival or party, it's the same.Obviously it would be impossible to clean the oceans but I felt I had to try something.”Waters explained that he, like many other Westerners, has always been aware of environmental concerns but did not begin to do something about i.The turning point came as he visited Malaysia with his girlfriend last year. He reached the shore to find piles of trash. But it was beautiful, the smell of the air, of the ocean.I had a strong feeling for it after I started researching trash in the ocean. A few months later, he came across the video of a sea turtle in obvious agony(痛苦) with a drinking straw stuck up its nostrils(鼻孔).That video inspired the first of Waters' three images. “Sea turtles are such gentle creatures. I felt sick watching that video.Trash left on a beach by humans caused so much pain and suffering. These animals don't have voices so we've got to speak up for them.” he added.Waters has not yet received a response from WWF regarding his images. For now, he says, he is inspired to develop more campaigns that raise awareness of environmental concerns.1.What can be found in the sea turtle's shell according to the passage?A.Some ice cream.B.Some drawings.C.Some litter.D.Some creatures.2.Why did the turtle in the video seem very painful?A.Because its nostrils were full of cigarette butts.B.Because it had been poisoned and seemed to be dying.C.Because most of its body parts had been injured seriously.D.Because there was a drinking straw stuck up its nostrils.3.Water's trying something aims to ________.A.make the polluted ocean bee cleanB.remind people awareness of ocean pollutionC.improve his skill of drawing picturesD.get some support from the WWF参考答案:1.C; 2.D; 3.B解析:1.[细节理解题。

Unit 1 Women of achievement李仕才***阅读理解。

When Kansas high school student Blake Hawkins discovered an empty locker at his school,he didn't just fill it with books and equipment—instead, the innovative teen turned it into a soda pop vending machine(自动售货机).Ha wkins explains that the“Soda Locker”vending machine uses a coin acceptor,an LCD screen,a microcontroller board,a magnetic switch, some old video game switches, and batteries.Hawkins explains he had Valley Center High School's support when he was developing the_prototype,and was able to come up with a design that would not damage the existing locker. And he was able to do it for approximately $160 spent on parts. The Soda Locker has a design where no one can remove the control board from the locker and the door swings shut after use to protect it.Furthermore,it's programmed to take exact change only, and to let the operator know when someone is trying to cheat the coin system.Hawkins explains he originally thought about the idea for having a soda pop vending machine in a locker a year ago on his way to history class. While he initially treated it as a joke, he has proven how you can take an idea and turn it into something brilliant. He wrote,“Whether you build your own Soda Locker or not,I hope you're inspired to build whatever project you've come up with!”1.What can we learn about the Soda Locker made by Hawkins?A.It looks nice.B.It is a combination.C.Its soda tastes great.D.Its equipment is advanced.2.What does the underlined phrase “the prototype” in Para graph 3 refer to?A.The locker. Women of achievement李仕才一、阅读理解。
