Paper is important because it is what you write on.
The Inkstone grinds the inkstick into powder so it can be mixed with water to form ink.
The inkstone also holds the liquid ink so it can be easily accessed by the calligrapher. If there was no container, the ink would just spill all over the table.

This drawing was painted thousands of years ago! Chinese Painters believe, with only ink and brush, you can paint anything!

There are 4 popular themes of Chinese
brush painting. These are known as the --Four Gentlemen
1. Orchid
2. Bamboo 3. Chrysanthemum 4. Plum

Figure painting
• Depth is created by placement of elements in different grounds: foreground, mid ground and back group • Literati artists were well educated elites who painted for pleasure
Landscape painting
• Developed rapidly in the Tang dy. and reached its apex by early Song dy. (first appears in tomb tile, inlaid bronze, and mural at Dun Huang • N-Song: a true landscape used precise line manner, depicts a sense of an estate, a group of building, a few peasants working, a fishing boat in a shore, no narrative, landscape represents in fragments, no perspective

2nd Artistic giant of the 20th century
• Xu Beihong borrowed techniques from Western painting. • He was most accurate in the depiction of both spirit and form.
Traditionally made brushes consisted of a stick with the hair of animals or babies attached to one end.
The Ink, usually found in stick form, was developed in the Han dynasty (202 BC– 220 AD).
