The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a theatrical company, usually as assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre and occasionally acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed, the hours are long and the salary is tiny.Of course, some people have remarkable chances which lead to fame and success without this long and hard training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his car. He stopped and got out to speak to the girl. He asked if she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and she thought he was joking. Then she got angry and said she would call the police. It took the producer twenty minutes to convince Connie that he was serious. The test was successful. And within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actors of the day. But chances like this happen once in a blue moon!1. From the very beginning, the author puts it clearly that acting is a profession B .A. sought after by too manyB. too difficult for young peopleC. for slim people onlyD. one can go into without special training2. Some people subscribe to as many as two or three different newspapers. But why do people read newspapers?Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings —battles lost and won, kings or rulers overthrown or killed — took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The newspassed by word of mouth and was never accurate. Today we can read in our newspapers of important events that occur in far away countries on the same day they happen.Apart from supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other useful information. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories, and of course, advertisements. The bigger ones are put in by large companies to bring attention to their products. They pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for the advertising space, but it is worth the money for news of their products goes into almost every home in the country. For those who produce newspapers, advertisements are also very important. Money earned from advertisements makes it possible for them to sell their newspapers at a low price and still make a profit.6. They show that he was learning Latin, was very interested in the basics of good behavior in society, and was reading English literature. At school he seems only to have been interested in mathematics. In fact, his formal education was surprisingly brief for a gentleman, and incomplete. For unlike other young Virginian of that day, he did not go to the College of William and Mary in the Virginian capital of Williamsburg. In terms of formal training then, Washington contrasts sharply with some other early American Presidents such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In later years, Washington probably regretted his lack of intellectual training. He never felt comfortable in a debate in Congress, or on any subject that had not to do with everyday, practical matters. And because he never learned French and could not speak directly to the French leaders, he did not visit the country he admired so much. Thus, unlike Jefferson andAdams, he never reached Europe.11. Why didn’t Washington go to college? BA. His family could not afford it.B. A college education was rather uncommon in his timeC. He didn’t like the young Virginian gentlemen.D. The author doesn’t give any reason.12. Washington felt uncomfortable in Congress debates because he D .A. lacked practice in public speakingB. felt his education was not good enoughC. didn’t l ike arguing and debating with peopleD. felt that debating was like intellectual training13. The reason why Washington didn’t visit France was probably that he C .A. didn’t really care about goingB. didn’t know French leadersC. couldn’t communica te directly with the French leadersD. was too busy to travel14. According to the author, D .A. Washington’s lack of formal education placed him at a disadvantage in later lifeB. Washington should have gone to France even though he could not speak FrenchC. Washington was not as good a president as Adams, Jefferson or MadisonD. Washington was a model for all Virginian gentlemen15. The main idea of the passage is that Washington’s education D .A. was of great variety, covering many subjectsB. was probably equal to those of most young gentlemen of his timeC. may seem poor by modern standards, but was good enough for his timeD. was rather limited for a presidentPassage 4During the meal, you’d better be careful not to leave a spoon in a soup bowl or coffee cup or any other dish. The coffee spoon ought to be on the saucer, the soup spoon ought to be on the plate under the bowl. When you are having soup, make the least noises and use the side of your spoon inside out this way, not the tip. And you mustn’t pick up your soup bowls so as to drink away the last drops of your soup from the bottom of the bowl.Very often there is only one main course and salad, followed by your sweet. If you find the meal not enough, say “Oh, it’s delicious!” and ask for some more of the chicken or steak or whatever you have just had. The hostess will be very glad that you appreciate her cooking and will give you an extra portion. But if you observe the Chinese way of being polite and say “No, thank you” when the hostess offers you more, you will most probably starve later, because Americans will never press food on you. Yet it is not polite to keep silent and not to talk with the person next to you. It would be considered good manners if you handle your silverware with care so that they don’t make any noise. When coffee comes, drink it from your cup. The coffee spoon should rest on the saucer while you are drinking. And smoking, of course, is rarely seen at a dinner table. Well, when the meal is finished, the guests put their napkins on the table and stand up, the men again helping the ladies with their chairs. After the dinner, the guests usually stay for an hour or two, then they would say, “well, I’m afraid I must be going now.” The host and hostess would of course urge everyone to stay longer. “What, already? Won’t you have another coffee?” The guests, for instance, would say, “I love to, but I have to be up early tomorrow. Thank you for a most enjoyable evening. Good-night.”And if you stay overnight or over the weekend, it will be courteous to send a thank-you note to the host or hostess the following day, very often with a small gift such as a box of chocolate or some flowers as a token(象征) of appreciation of their hospitality (好客).16. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage? CA. How to Prepare for a MealB. Never Press Food on Your GuestC. Table Manners in the U. S.A.D. How to Enjoy a Dinner17. The passage suggests that DA. to make the hostess happy you should ask for more food even if you are full.B. you should keep silent at a dinner table in order to be polite.C. if you want to be friendly with the person next to you, you should press food on him.D. talking is necessary at a dinner table.18. At a dinner table, you do all of the following except BA. making the least noise possible.B. picking up your soup bowl to drink away the last drop.C. handling your silverware with care.D. drinking the coffee from your cup.19. What does “courteous” mean in the last paragraph? CA. Friendly.B. Generous.C. Polite.D. Noble.20. The passage implies that AA. different nations have different customs.B. They had planned either to live in a furnished apartment or to buy used furniture. But they soon learned about a new system that more and more people are using. The renting of home furn ishings (bed, tables, dishes, and so on) has become one of America’s fastest growing businesses. What kinds of people rent their home furnishings instead of buying them? People who are international business or government officials, foreign students, airline workers, young married couples — people whose job or business may force them to move frequently from one city to another. They save a lot of trouble and the cost of moving their furniture each time. They simply rent new furniture when they reach their new homes. Young people with little money do not want to buy cheap furniture that they may soon dislike. They prefer to wait until they have enough money to buy furniture they really like. Meanwhile, they find they can rent better quality furniture than they could afford to buy.One family, who now have a large, beautiful home of their own, liked their rented furniture somuch that they decided to keep renting it instead of buying new things. But usually people don’t like to tell others about it. The idea of renting home furnishings is still quite new, and they are not sure what their neighbors might think.31. Young people like renting home furniture in that_________A. They have less money.B. They don’t want to buy old furniture.C. The new furniture is of good quality.D. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: what kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes? It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must negatively affect people. A person’s conception of himself or herself is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing.” Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their feelings of inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one, “You’re just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true.” It is clear that while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in building self-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in handwith a lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths. Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual, interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. Let’s not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.36. What does the author try to prove by citing “what kind of impression am I making?” (Para. 1)A. Shy people benefit from their caring about their appearance.B. People’s shyness made them care too much about their appearan ce and actions.C. It’s natural that shy people don’t believe other’s compliments.D. Shy people think they are different from others.37. According to the writer, self-awareness is_________.A. a good qualityB. the cause of unhappinessC. harmful to peopleD. a weak point of shy people38. That shy people react to a compliment in such a way is _________.A. goodB. unrealC. very reasonableD. harmful39. Which of the following statements is true, according to the passage?A. Shyness helps us to develop our potentialB. Shyness enables us to understand ourselves betterC. Shyness can block our chances for a rich lifeD. Shyness has nothing to do with lack of self-esteem40. It can be inferred from the passage that shy people_________.A. should find more of their weaknessB. should understand themselves in the right wayC. had better ignore their weaknessD. can get rid of their shyness while maintaining low self-esteemPassage 9As supplier of most of the food we eat and of raw material for many industrial processes, agriculture is clearly an important area of the economy. But the industrial performance of agriculture is even more important than this. For in nations where the productivity of farmers is low, most of the working population is needed to raise food and few people are available for production of investment goods or for other activities required for economic growth. Indeed, one of the factors related most closely to the per capita income (人均收入) of a nation is the percentage of its population engaged in farming. In the poorest nations of the world, more than half of the population lives on farms. This compares sharply with less than 10% in western Europe and less than 4% in the United States. In short, the course of economic development in general depends in a fundamental way on the performance of farmers. This performance, in turn, depends on how agriculture is organized and on the economic environment, or market structure, within which it functions. In the following pages the performance of American agriculture is examined. It is appropriate to begin with a consideration of its market structure.41. This passage is most probably ________.A. a news itemB. part of an introduction of a bookC. part of a lectureD. an advertisement42. From the passage, we can infer that ________ is most important to agriculture.A. the amount of food it producesB. the per capita income of farmersC. the industrial performanceD. the production of investment goods43. The word “this” in Line 3 refers to ________.A. the provision of food and raw materialsB. the productivity of farmersC. the production of investment goodsD. the economy as a whole44. The performance of farmers essentially determines ________.A. the size of the working populationB. the organization of agricultureC. the market structureD. the general development of economy45. This passage will most probably be followed by a discussion of ________.A. the structure of American farming populationB. the market structure of American agricultureC. the various functions of American agricultureD. the organization of American agriculturePassage 10The advantages and disadvantages of large population have long been a subject of discussion among economists. It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population, inferior land must be cultivated and the good land worked intensively. Thus, each person produces less and this means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population. Other economists have argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them. One of the difficulties in carrying out a world-wide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability(获得的可能性)of food and raw materials. In the developing countries where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources, it will be the first concern of government to place a limit on the birthrate, whatever the consequences may be. In a highly industrialized society the problem may be more complex. A decreasing birthrate may lead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods. When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened. Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or in decline.46. According to the passage, slowly rising birthrate perhaps is good for ___________.A. a developed nationB. a developing nationC. every nation with a small populationD. every nation with a big population47. A small population may mean ______________.A. higher productivity and a higher average income.B. lower productivity and a lower average incomeC. higher productivity, but a lower average incomeD. lower productivity, but a higher average income48. In a developed country, people will perhaps go out of work if the birthrate ___________.A. is out of controlB. goes downC. goes upD. remains stable49. It is no easy job to carry out a general plan for birth control throughout the world because ___。

The resources of the library can be helpful even when we are doing something very informal, such as trying to devise a better way to measure attitudes toward music or looking for a better way to teachmathematics. The library can be equally helpful when we are doing something very formal, such as writing a dissertation (学位论文) or preparing an article for publication in a professional journal. In either case, our goal should be to use the library as a useful tool to help us understand and solve our problem. The following sections of this chapter will describe specific resources available in many libraries. In some cases you may already be aware of a resource and may use it frequently and successfully. In other cases you may be completely unfamiliar with a resource. Your goal should be to become aware of what is available and to know how to use each of these resources to help you solve the problem they are designed to solve. When educators have a piece of information that they want to share with their colleagues, they often make this information available in professional journals or at professional meetings. It would often be useful to have access to such information, and this chapter will describe the special services that enable us to locate such information.1). The comprehension passages on this course are designed to help you increase your reading speed. A higher reading rate, with no loss of comprehension, will help you in other subjects as well as English, and the general principles apply to any language. Naturally, you will not read every book at the same speed. You would expect to read a newspaper, for example, much more rapidly than a physics or economics textbook, but you can raise your average reading speed over the whole range of materials you wish to cover so that the percentage gain will be the same whatever kind of reading you are concerned with. The reading passages that follow are all of an average level of difficulty for your stage of instruction. They are all about 500 words long. They are about topics of general interest that do not require a great deal of specialized knowledge. Thus they fall between the kind of reading you might find in your textbooks and the much less demanding kind you will find in a newspaper or light novel. If you read this kind of English, with understanding, at 400 words per minute, you might skim through a newspaper at perhaps 650-700, while with a difficult textbook you might drop to 200 or 250.Perhaps you would like to know what reading speeds are common among native English-speaking university students and how those speeds can be improved. Tests in Minnesota, U.S.A., for example, have shown that students without special training can read English of average difficulty, for example, Tolstoy’s War and Peace in translation, at speeds of between 240 and 250 w.p.m. with about 70% comprehension. Minnesota claims that after 12 half-hour lessons, once a week, the reading speed can be increased, with no loss of comprehension, to around 500 w.p.m. It is further claimed that with intensive training over seventeen weeks, speeds of over 1000 w.p.m. can be reached, but this would be quite exceptional.1). According to the passage, a higher reading rate of English depends on ______.A. a large vocabularyB. learning other subjects well besides EnglishC. a good comprehension of the reading textsD. different reading speeds for different types of texts满分:2 分得分:22). Only one name can possibly suggest itself to him: that of William Shakespeare. Every Englishman has some knowledge, however slight, of the work of our greatest writer. All of us use words, phrases and quotations from Shakespeare’s writings that have become part of the common property of the English-speaking people. Most of the time we are probably unaware of the source of the words we used, rather like the old lady who was taken to see a performance of Hamlet and complained that it was full of well-known proverbs and quotations.Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, makes full use of the great resources of the Englishlanguage. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal use of English; Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand. There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare used it. Such a study is well worth the effort (it is not, of course, recommended to beginners) even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare’s day.1). Online HomeWork_U5B3-1I. Reading ComprehensionSection A Fast Reading1 Maintaining a marriage is the responsibility of both you, the wife and mother, and your husband. Living together is already a challenge for couples faced with new situations, a new environment, and new responsibilities, but these challenges tend to increase when you become parents. It is not easy to adjust immediately to the new situation especially when you become the proud parents of two or more at the same time. Then the adjustments are even tougher. While you may not even have enough energy to care for the infants and keep the house clean, you may find that you have even less energy left with which to maintain your marriage.2 Are you aware that statistics show that parents of multiples have a higher stress level and tend to argue more often which leads to a higher divorce rate? It is also seen that these children are more likely to suffer some form of child abuse than other children who don‟t come from homes with multiple s.3 There are many reasons why the marriage struggles during the years of bringing up multiple-birth children. One reason is that when you start feeling overwhelmed with stress, little things start adding up, sleep deprivation, fatigue, the need for personal time and depression can all become too overwhelming to handle, especially when you get no co-operation from your spouse. This can be overcome by talking openly with your spouse and sharing responsibilities. Understanding each other is important to help maintain your marriage especially during the tough times.4 Caring for your children is another area where fathers can and should get involved. Talk with your spouse about getting more involved, and even if he was not born with the skills of parenting, let him make an effort to learn through experience. Be specific about areas where you would like his help. Make him feel he is as capable as you of caring for your babies. Make your spouse feel that he is important and needed. Make him realize that you believe in him as a father. By doing that he will feel proud and self confident in assisting at home. Remember not to push him, give him the chance and time to learn, and the freedom to do things in his own way, even if that means he will make some mistakes. Help him to realize that it‟s not only about helping out at home, but rather more, it is a strong contribution towards maintaining a good married life.5 It is vital for you both, as parents of multiples, to have an outlet to release and share your frustrations, to keep your senses clear and maintain a great relationship with the children as well as each other. When you handle situations wisely, you can strengthen both your marriage and your family.1Statements based on the passage:1. Young couples find it easy to live together because they are faced with newsituations and responsibilities.2. A couple may have less energy to maintain their marriage if they have severalchildren at the same time to take care of.3. Cooperation and understanding between a couple are important to help maintaintheir marriage during the years of bringing up multiples.4. When bringing up multiple-birth children, mother will have more sleep, fatigue andpersonal time.5. Only fathers who were born with the skills of parenting should get involved incaring for children.6. It is not easy for a woman to bring up multiples on her own without the help of her spouse.7. Fathers can also be good at looking after children with a little training.8. Mothers should be tolerant when fathers make some mistakes in assisting at home.9. Fathers‟ involvement in caring for children helps maintain a good married life.10. It is unnecessary for parents to release their frustrations and stresses every nowand then.Section B Passage ReadingPassage 1On the morning of September 11th, I boarded the train from Washington Heights in Upper Manhattan just as usual and went to the Body Positive office in the South Street Seaport of Lower Manhattan. While I was leaving the subway at 8:53 am, a man ran down the street screaming, “someone just bombed the World Trade Center.” Those around me screamed and shouted “No!” in disbelief. However, being an amateur photographer, and thinking that I might be able to help out, I ran directly toward the WTC. I stopped just short of the WTC at a corner and looked up. There2before me stood the gaping hole and fire that had taken over the first building. I stood there in shock taking pictures, wanting to run even closer to help out, but I could not move. Soon I saw what looked like little angels floating down from the top of the building. I began to cry when I realized that these “angels”—in fact, desperate office workers—were coming down, some one by one, some even holding hands with another. Could I actually be seeing this disaster unfold with hundreds of people around me crying, screaming and running for safety? As I watched in horror, another white airliner came from the south and took aim at the South Tower. As the plane entered the building, there was an explosion and fire and soon debris (碎片) began to fall around me. It was then that I realized that we were being attacked and that this was just not a terrible accident. Yet, I still could not move, until I was pushed down by the crowd on the street, many now in a panic running toward the water, as far from the WTC as they could possibly get. All around me were the visual reminders of hundreds of people running in panic. There were shoes, hats, briefcases, pocketbooks, newspapers, and other personal items dropped as hundreds of people ran for safety.Much has been written about the disaster already. We have learned so much in such a small amount of time about appreciating life. In some way we must move forward, bury the dead, build a memorial for those lost, and begin the coping and healing process for the survivors. But healing takes time. Some have been able to head right back to work, others seek counseling, while others remain walking through the streets with expressionless faces. However, we are all united in our grief.11. According to the f irst paragraph, people couldn‟t believe that ______.A. someone bombed the World Trade Center.B. the subway ran into a man who was screaming.C. office workers jumped from the World Trade Center.D. people were running from the subway screaming.12. At first look, the author thought that desperate office workers were ______.A. crying as they fell.B. running for safety.C. holding hands.D. angels in the sky.13. What was the author‟s first reflection when he stood at the corner?A. Nothing could he do to help out.B. There was an accident with an airliner. 3C. He was just at a loss and could not understand everything happening.D. A terrorist attack against America had begun.14. What did the author do on seeing the South Tower being attacked?A. He watched in horror and took pictures.B. He was elbowed by the crowd running off to a safe place.C. He ran nearer to help out.D. he ran nearer to take pictures.15. In the last paragraph, all of the following are mentioned EXCEPT that ______.A. life should be appreciatedB. people are deep in grief, but they are unitedC. we should stop and consider carefully what to doD. work should be done about the dead and the livingPassage 2On Mother‟s Day when we visited Mom in the hospital, she told us she believed the multiple rounds of chemotherapy (化疗), radiation, ICU (intensive care unit) stays, and surgeries had been worth it because they had bought her some time. “But now,it‟s time to go home and …take care of business‟.”Shortly after coming home, Mom announced that she planned to make a quilt(拼接缝制的被子), which she had never done. When I asked why, she said, “Dying is boring, and it‟s never too late to learn something new.” The idleness associated with incapacity was madding to her. Over the next few months Mom worked diligently on the quilt, a simple pattern called “Grandmother‟s Garden”.As she picked up a piece of calico (印花布), she would say, “This reminds me of the dress you wore your first day of school,” or “This blue was your father‟s favorite color.” Each recollection opened the door for a conversation about those things that she wanted to share. As the quilt grew, Mom weakened. It was a poignant reminder that time was passing too quickly. At last, she became too sick to work on the quilt.Mom died before the quilt was finished, but it was all right. She had creatively used it as a tool to teach me her final lesson, that the “business” of dying is something best done at home and not in an intensive care unit. This is because the real “business” of dying is reaffirming relationships that have given one‟s life meaning.Without my knowledge, two Christmases later, my husband‟s parents finished the quilt for me. It was the most wonderful gift imaginable. 4Mom‟s quilt has served our family in many ways she would have liked — picnic cloth, moving pad, bedspread, and wrap for her great-grandson. Each time, the quilt reminds me of the bond between generations and the imp ortant “business” of dying.16. According to Paragraph 1, which of the following is true?A. Mom thought that hospital treatment produced no effect.B. Mom wanted to take care of family business.C. Mom had received many kinds of treatments in hospital.D. Mom had recovered from surgeries and decided to go home.17. Why did Mom plan to make a quilt?A. Because she wanted to leave something valuable to her grandchidren.B. Because she wanted to do something special as she approached death.C. Because she wanted to help with the family economy.D. Because she wanted to count her days remaining.18. The word “idleness” (underlined in Paragraph 2) probably refers to Mom‟s being______.A. worthlessB. sleepyC. not busyD. lazy19. The quilt is now used in many ways EXCEPT ______.A. as the tableclothB. covering the bedC. for picnicD. wrapping the child20. According to the passage, which of the following is true?A. Mom wanted the quilt to be used for her great-grandchildren.B. The author asked her husband‟s parents to help with the quilt.C. Mom finished the quilt on her own without any help at all.D. Mom had never once made a quilt before during her life.Section C Reading in Depth (p90/CmpEx3)(Key: 21.J 22.L 23.D 24.A 25.F26.O 27.N 28.H 29.G 30.C)Long ago, in Ancient Greece, two young lovers were about to be separated. Reading ComprehensionSection A Fast Reading1 At a primary school in Manning, a small town 65 miles east of Columbia, South Carolina, second grade teachers Holly Garneau and Anna Lynne Gamble are convinced that segregating elementary-age boys and girls produces immediate academic improvement---in both genders. The two created a teaching plan for the upcoming semester. But first, Garneau and Gamble need the parents‟ approval. That‟s where David Chadwell, South Carolina‟s coordinator of single gender education, comes in.2 Just as he‟s explained to hundreds of parents and teachers across the state, Chadwell patiently walks the Manning crowd through how boys and girls perceive the world.3 “They see differently.Literally,” he begins. Male and female eyes are not organized in the same way, he explains. The composition of the male eye makes it attuned to motion and direction. “Boys interpret the world as objects moving through space,” he says. “The teacher should move around the room constantly and be that object.”4 The male eye is also drawn to cooler colors like silver, blue, black, grey, and brown. It‟s no accident boys tend to create pictures of moving objects like spaceships, cars, and trucks in dark colors instead of drawing the happy colorful family, like girls in their class.5 The female eye, on the other hand, is drawn to textures and colors. It‟s also oriented toward warmer colors---reds, yellow, oranges---and visuals with more details, like faces. To engage girls, Chadwell says, the teacher doesn‟t need to move as much, if at all. Girls work well in circles, facing each other. Using descriptive phrases and lots of color in overhead presentations or on the chalkboard gets their attention.6 Boys and girls also hear differently. “When someone speaks in a loud tone, girls interpret it as yelling,” Chadwell says. “They think you‟re mad and can shut down.” Girls have a more finely tuned aural(听觉的) structure; they can hear higher frequencies than boys and are more sensitive to sounds. He advises girls‟ teachers to watch the t one of their voices. Boys‟ teachers should sound matter of fact, even excited.7 A boy‟s autonomic nervous system causes them to be more alert when they are standing, moving, and the room temperature is around 69 degrees. Stress in boys, he says, tends to increase blood flow to their brains, a process that helps them stay focused. This won‟t work for girls, who are more focused seated in a warmer room around 75 degrees. Girls also respond to stress differently. When exposed to threat and confrontation, blood goes to their guts, leaving them feeling nervous or anxious.8 “Boys will rise to a risk and tend to overestimate their abilities,” he says. Teachers can help them by getting them to be more realistic about results,” he says. “Girls at this age shy away from risk, which is exactly why lots of girls‟ programs began in the private sector. Teachers can help them learn to take risks in an atmosphere where they feel confident about doing so.”9 These differences can be accommodated in the classroom, C hadwell adds. “Single gender programs are about maximizing the learning.”1. It is of much help to achieve academic improvement by segregating both genders at primary-age.2. Before the teaching plan which raised by Garneau and Gamble is put into practice, it is necessary to get the students‟ parents‟ approval.3. Boys see the world as objects moving through space is due to the reason that the teacher goes around the classroom constantly.4. Girls tend to draw the happy colorful family in their class. So do the boys.5. For girls, it is enough to use descriptive phrases and lots of color on the blackboard to get their attention.6. Boys can hear higher frequencies than girls and more sensitive to sounds, because they have a finely tuned aural structure.7. In class, girls‟ teachers should watch the tone of their voice while boys‟ teachers should sound more excited.8. Stress in boys tends to increase blood flow to their brains, making them nervous or anxious.9. Boys and girls see and hear differently and respond to stress differently.10. Since boys are likely to overestimate their abilities, teachers can help them bymaking them more realistic.Section B Passage ReadingPassage 1Big Ben is one of London‟s best-known landmarks, and looks most spectacular at night when the clock faces are lighted. You even know when parliament is in session, because a light shines above the clock face. The four dials of the clock are 23 feet square, the minute hand is 14 feet long and the figures are 2 feet high. Minutely regulated with a stack of coins placed on the huge pendulum, Big Ben is an excellent timekeeper, which has rarely stopped. The name Big Ben actually refers not to the clock tower itself, but to the thirteen-ton bell hung within. The bell was named after the first commissioner of works, Sir Benjamin Hall. This bell came originally from the old Palace of Westminster, and was given to the Dean of St. Paul by William III. Before returning to Westminster to hang in its present home, it was refashioned in White Chapel in 1858. The BBC first broadcast the chimes(报时) on 31 December 1923. There is a microphone in the tower connected to Broadcasting House.During the Second World War in 1941, a bomb destroyed the Commons chamber of the Houses of Parliament, but the clock tower remained intact and Big Ben continued to keep time and strike away the hours. Its unique sound was broadcast to the nation and around the world, a welcome reassurance of hope to all who heard it.The tower is not open to th e general public, but those with a “special interest” may arrange a visit to the top of the clock tower through a guide.11. His father, supporting the decision, found a place for him in a supermarket. “You‟re lucky, Ron,” he said. “For every boy with a job these days, there‟s a dozen without.” So Ron joined the working world at 20 pounds a week. For a year he spent his days filling shelves with tins of food. By the end of that time he was looking back on his school days as a time of great variety and satisfaction. He searched for an interest in his work, with little success. One fine day instead of going to work Ron got a lift on a lorry going south. With nine pounds in his pocket, a full heart and great longing for the sea, he set out to make a better way for himself. That evening, in Bournemouth, he had a sandwich and adrink in a cafe run by an elderly man and his wife. Before he had finished the sandwich, the woman had taken him on for the rest of the summer, at 20 pounds a week, a room upstairs and three meals a day. The ease and speed of it rather took Ron‟s breath away. At quiet times Ron had to check the old man‟s arithmetic in the records of the business. At the end of the season, he stayed on the coast. He was again surprised how straightforward it was for a boy of 17 to make a living. He worked in shops mostly, but once he took a job in a hotel for three weeks.
