Stanza 2 & 3
Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal; “Dust thou art, to dust returnest,” Was not spoken of the soul. Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way; But to act, that each tomorrow Find us farther than today.
Stanza 1 Tell me not, in mournful numbers, “Life is but an empty dream!” For the soul is dead that slumbers, And things are not what they seem.
The psalmist compares life to an empty dream, for those people, they loiter away their lives, do nothing, which is strongly opposed by the young man.
Metaphor: Life is a journey The poet says “ grave is not the goal”, which means life doesn't end for people simply because they die; there is always something more to be hopeful and optimistic for.
