People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness (荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warming. An avalanche(雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives. But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. Today, people still come and go — to see where the Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City — its present population is 762.24. What attracted the early settlers to New York City?A. Its business culture.B. Its small population.C. Its geographical position.D. Its favourable climate.25. What do we know about those who first dug for gold in Dawson?A. Two-thirds of them stayed there.B. One out of five people got rich.C. Almost everyone gave up.D. Half of them died.26. What was the main reason for many people to leave Dawson?A. They found the city too crowded.B. They wanted to try their luck elsewhere.C. They were unable to stand the winter.D. They were short of food.27. What is the text mainly about?A. The rise and fall of a city.B. The gold rush in Canada.C. Journeys into the wilderness.D. Tourism in Dawson.CWhile famous foreign architects are invited to lead the designs of landmark buildings in China such as the new CCTV tower and the National Center for the Performing Arts, many excellent Chinese architects are making great efforts to take the center stage.Their efforts have been proven fruitful. Wang Shu, a 49-year-old Chinese architect, won the 2012 Pritzker Architecture Prize — which is often referred to as the Nobel Prize in architecture — on February 28. He is the first Chinese citizen to win this award.Wang serves as head of the Architecture Department at the China Academy ofArt (CAA). His office is located at the Xiangshan campus (校园) of the university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Many buildings on the campus are his original creations. The style of the campus is quite different from that of most Chinese universities. Many visitors were amazed by the complex architectural space and abundant building types. The curves (曲线) of the buildings perfectly match the rise and fall of hills, forming a unique view.Wang collected more than 7 million abandoned bricks of different ages. He asked the workers to use traditional techniques to make the bricks into walls, roofs and corridors. This creation attracted a lot of attention thanks to its mixture of modern and traditional Chinese elements (元素).Wang’s works show a deep understanding of modern architecture and a good knowledge of traditions. Through such a balance, he had created a new type of Chinese architecture, said Tadao Ando, the winner of the 1995 Pritzker Prize.Wang believes traditions should not be sealed in glass boxes at museums. “That is only evidence that traditions once existed,” he said.“Many Chinese people have a misunderstanding of traditions. They think tradition means old things from the past. In fact, tradition also refers to the things that have been developing and that are still being created,” he said.“Today, many Chinese people are learning Western styles and theories rather than focusing on Chinese traditions. Many people tend to talk about traditions without knowing what they really are,” said Wang. The study of traditions should be combined with practice. Otherwise, the recreation of traditions would be artificial and empty, he said.28. Wang’s winning of the prize means that Chinese architects are ___________.A. following the latest world trendB. getting international recognitionC. working harder than ever beforeD. relying on foreign architects29. What impressed visitors to the CAA Xiangshan campus most?A. Its hilly environment.B. Its large size.C. Its unique style.D. Its diverse functions.30. What made Wang’s architectural design a success?A. The mixture of different shapes.B. The balance of East and West.C. The use of popular techniques.D. The harmony of old and new.31. What should we do about Chinese traditions according to Wang?A. Spread them to the world.B. Preserve them at museums.C. Teach them in universities.D. Recreate them in practice.DAdults understand what it feels like to be flooded with objects. Why do we often assume that more is more when it comes to kids and their belongings? The good news is that I can help my own kids learn earlier than I did how to live more with less.I found the pre-holidays a good time to encourage young children to donate less-used things, and it worked. Because of our efforts, our daughter Georgia did decide to donate a large bag of toys to a little girl whose mother was unable to pay for her holiday due to illness. She chose to sell a few larger objects that were less often used when we promised to put the money into her school fund (基金) (our kindergarten daughter is serious about becoming a doctor). For weeks, I’ve been thinking of bigger, deeper questions: How do we make it a habit for them? And how do we train ourselves to help them live with, need, and use less? Yesterday, I sat with my son, Shepherd, determined to test my own theory on this. I decided to play with him with only one toy for as long as it would keep his interest. I expected that one toy would keep his attention for about five minutes, ten minutes, max. I chose a red rubber ball—simple, universally available. We passed it, he tried to put it in his mouth, he tried bouncing it, rolling it, sitting on it, throwing it. It was totally, completely enough for him. Before I knew it an hour had passed and it was time to move on to lunch. We both became absorbed in the simplicity of playing together. He had my full attention and I had his. My little experiment to find joy in a single object worked for both of us.32. What do the words “more is more” in paragraph 1 probably mean?A. The more, the better.B. Enough is enough.C. More money, more worries.D. Earn more and spend more.33. What made Georgia agree to sell some of her objects?A. Saving up for her holidayB. Raising money for a poor girlC. Adding the money to her fundD. Giving the money to a sick mother34. Why did the author play the ball with Shepherd?A. To try out an ideaB. To show a parent's loveC. To train his attentionD. To help him start a hobby35.What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Take It or Leave ItB. A Lesson from KidsC. Live More with LessD.

For example, many birds have good number sense. If a nesthas four eggs and you remove one, the bird will not3. However, if you remove two, the bird4leaves. This means that the bird knows the5between two and three.Another interesting experiment showed a bird ’s6number sense. A man was trying to take a photo of a crow( 乌鸦 ) that had a nest in a tower, but the crow always left when she saw him coming. The bird did not7until the man left the tower. The man had an8. He took another man with him to the tower. One man left and the other stayed, but they didnot9the bird. The crow stayed away until the second man left, too. The experiment was10with three men and then with four men. But the crow did not return to the nest until all the men were11. It was not until five men went into the tower and only four left that they were12able to fool the crow. How good is a human ’s number sense? It ’s not very good. For example, babies about fourteen months old almost always notice if something is taken away from a13group. But when the number goes beyond three or four, the children are 14fooled.It seems that number sense is something we have in common with many animals in this world, and that our human15is not much better than a crow ’s.1.A. rise B. pattern C. change D. trend2.A. So Nick called to his son,“Go to the village and buy some salt, but pay a fair price for it: neither too much17too little. ”His son looked surprised. “I can understand why shouldn ’tpay too much, Father, but if I can pay less,18not save a bit of money? ”“That would be a very19(reason) thing to do in a big city, but it could destroy a small village like ours,”Nick said.Nick ’s guest, 20 had heard their conversation, asked why they should not buy salt more cheaply if they could. Nick replied, “The only reason a man would sell salt 21 a lower price would be because he was desperate for money. And anyone who took advantage of that situation would be showing a lack of respect 22 the sweat and struggle of the manwho worked very hard to produce it. ”“But such a small thing couldn ’t23(possible) destroy a village. ”“In the beginning, there was only24very small amount of unfairness in the world, but everyone added a little, always25(think) that it was only small and not very important, and look where we have ended up today.”第三节阅读理解A .Imagination and fantasy can play an important role in achieving the things we fear. Children know this very well. Fred Epstein, in his book I Make It to Five, tells a story he heard from one of his friends about Tom, a four-year-old boy with acancer in his back bone. He came through several operations and a lot of pain by mastering his imagination.Tom loved to pretend, and he particularly loved to play superheroes. Dr. Epstein explained that it was actually a brilliantway for his young mind to handle the terrifying and painful life he led.The day before his third trip to the operating room, Tom was terribly afraid. “Maybe I could go as Superman,”he whispered to his mom. Hearing this, the mother hesitated for while. She has avoided buying the expensive costume(戏装), but finally she agreed. The next day Tom appeared as the powerful Superman, showing off through the hospital halls and coolly waving his handto the people greeting him along the way. And Tom, with the strength of his fantasy, successfully made it through the operation. The power of imagination need not be reserved for children only. We all have the power to use our fantasies to attempt things we never thought possible, to go through those things that seem impossible, and to achieve what we never believedwe could. Just as Dr. Epstein puts it, “If you can dream it, you can do it. ”It doesn ’ t mean thatouy should dress as a superhero for your next job interview. But, next time you are tested in a waythat seems impossible, imagine what it would take to overcome it. Become the person you need to become to win over your challenge and do it in your mind first. So, let your imagination run wild, and dare to dream.26. What do we know about Tom?A. He was seriously ill.B. He was a dishonest boy.C. He was crazy about magic.D. He was Dr. Epstein ’s patient.27. What can be inferred about Tom ’s mother?A. She was a rich lady.B. She refused Tom’s request.C. She wanted Tom to be a superhero.D. She wanted to get Tom through the pain.28. When Tom went for the third operation, he_________.A. pretended to be painfulB. acted like a superheroC. appeared in poor spiritsD. argued with his mother29. In the last paragraph, you are advised________.A. to go through some difficult testsB. to wake up from your wild dreamsC. to become a powerful person in your mindD. to wear expensive clothes for job interviews30. What is the purpose of the passage?A. To tell us an interesting story.B. To help us make right decisions.C. To advise us to care about children.D. To encourage us to use our imagination.B.Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believethat success mostly comes down to luck. I ’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don ’tcome into play because theydo. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that ’s just the reality of how life is.However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in addition to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things, it ’ll require even more time, time that most people won ’tput in.This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’tenjoy what you do, itis going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It ’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there ’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway.Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you ’re not willing to put in the time and work, don ’texpect to receive any rewards. Consistent, hard work won ’tguarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become rally good at whatever it is you put all that work into.31.Paragraph 1 mainly talks about__________.A. the reasons for successB. the meaning of successC. the standards of successD. the importance of success32.Paragraph 2, the underlined word that refers to__________.A. being good at somethingB. setting a practical goalC. putting in more timeD. succeeding in life33.Successful people suggest doing what one loves because_____________.A. work makes one feel painB. one tends to enjoy his workC. one gives up his work easilyD. it takes a lot of time to succeed34. What can be infer from Paragraph 4?A. Successful people like to show their great skills.C. People need to achieve success at the cost of life.35.What is the main theme of the passage?A. Having a goal is vital to success.C. One cannot succeed without time and practice. B. People sometimes succeed without luck or talent.D. It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success.B. Being good is different from being great.D. Luck, talent and family help to achieve success.C.One day, when I was working as a psychologist in England, an adolescent boy showed up in my office. It was David. Hekept waling up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his hands shaking slightly. His head teacher had referred him to me.“This boy has lost his family , ”he wrote. “He is understandably very sad and refuses to talk to others, and I ’m very worried about him. Can I help? ”I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I help him? There are problems psychology doesn’thave the answer to, and which no wards can describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and sympathetically. The first two times we met, David didn’tsay a word. He sat there, only looking up to look at the children’s drawings on the wall behind me. I suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoon---in complete silence and without looking at me. It ’s not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure David won once or twice.Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my company. But why did he never look at me?“Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with,”I thought.“Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering.”Some months later, when we were playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly.“It ’s your turn, ”he said. After that day, David started talking. He got friends in school and joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times, about his biking with some friends, and about his plan to get into university. Now he had really started to live his own life.Maybe I gave David something. But I also learned that one---without any words---can reach out to another person. All ittakes is a hug, a shoulder to cry on, a friendly touch, and an ear that listens.36.When he first met the author, David_________.A. felt a little excitedB. walked energeticallyC. looked a little nervousD. showed up with his teacher37.As a psychologist, the author __________.A. was ready to listen to DavidB. was skeptical about psychologyC. was able to describe David ’s problemD. was sure of handling David ’s problem38.David enjoyed being with the author because he____________.A. wanted to ask the author for adviceB. needed to share sorrow with the authorC. liked the children ’s drawing in the officeD. beat the author many times in the chess game39.What can be inferred about David?A. He recovered after months of treatment.B. He liked biking before he lost his family.C. He went into university soon after starting to talk.D. He got friends in school before he met the author.40.What made David change?A. His teacher ’s help.B. The author ’s friendship.C. His exchange of letters with the author.D. The author ’s silent communication with him.D.While Jennifer was at home taking an online exam for her business law class, a monitor(监控器) a few hundred miles away was watching her every move.Using a web camera equipped in Jennifer ’s Los Angeles apartment, the monitor in Phoenix tracked how frequently her eyes moved from the computer screen and listened for the secret sounds of a possible helper in the room. Her Internet access was locked---remotely---to prevent Internet searches, and her typing style was analyzed to make sure she was who she saidshe was; Did she enter her student number at the same speed as she had in the past? Or was she slowing down?In the battle against cheating, this is the cutting edge and a key to encourage honestly in the booming field of on line education. The technology gives trust to the entire system, to the institution and to online education in general. Only with solid measures against cheating, experts say, can Internet universities show that their exams and diplomas are valid---that students haven’tsearched the Internet to get the right answers.Although online classes have existed for more than a decade, the concern over cheating become sharper in the last yearwith the growth of “open online courses.”Private colleges, public universities and corporations are jumping into the online education field, spending millions of dollars to attract potential students, while also taking steps to help guarantee honesty at a distance.Aside from the web cameras, a number of other high-tech methods are becoming increasingly popular. Among themare programs that check student’s identities using personas information, such as the telephone numbers they once used.Other programs can produce unique exams by drawing on a large list of questions and can recognize possible cheaters by analyzing whether difficult test questions are answered at he same speed as easy ones. As in many university classes, termpapers are scanned against some large Internet data banks for cheating.41.Why was Jennifer watched in an online exam?A. To correct her typing mistakes.B.
