If you are saving to buy a CD(光盘)or to go to a concert, then probably you would keep your money somewhere in your room.If you ale saving for a big purchase like a mountain bike or a school trip, where would you save your money? One place to save money is the bank. Putting your money in a savings account will help your money earn more money. If you put your money in a piggy bank(猪形储蓄罐), one year later you'11 still have the same amount of money you put in. If you put your money in a savings account, one year later, you'll have more money than you put in. Why?When you keep your money in a bank, your money earns interest. Interest is an amount of money a bank pays you to use your money. The bank uses your money (and the money of other people too) to loan money to people and businesses. The bank will send you a statement several times a year. A bank statement tells you how much money you have in your account It also tells you how much interest you have earned If you leave your money in the bank, you can watch it grow! Another way you can save money is to buy a certificate of deposit or CD. If you have somemoney that you don't need to use for a long time, this is a good way to make your money grow. You Can buy a CD at a bank You agree not to use the money for a certain period of time That period might be from six months to five years. You can't touch your money during that time. If you do, you must pay a penalty or fee.6. Your money will earn more money if you put it _______.A. in your roomB. in a piggy bankC. in your pocketD. in a savings account7. A bank pays you interest for _______.A wasting your moneyB losing your moneyC using your moneyD decreasing your money8. Among other things, a bank statement tells you _______.A. the amount of money you have in the bankB. the current rates of interestC. the current rates of exchangeD. the best way to save your money9. If you draw your money before it is due, you will have to _______.A. pay interest to the bankB. close your accountC. open a new accountD. pay a penalty or fee10. The word “touch" in paragraph 5 could be best replaced by _______.A. “deposit”B. “lend”C. “use”D. “cash”Can trees talk? Yes, but not in words. Scientists have reason to believe that treesdo communicate (交际) with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree attacked in the woods by caterpillars (毛虫) changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that they got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. Then even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special smell---a signal (信号) causing its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty.Communication, of course, doesn’t need to be in wor ds. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar (花蜜) for honey. So why shouldn’t trees have ways of sending message?11. It can be concluded from the passage that caterpillars do not feed on leaves that ______.A. are lying on the groundB. have an unpleasant tasteC. bees don’t likeD. have an unfamiliar shape12. The willow tree described in the passage protected itself by ______.A. growing more branchesB. communicating with birds and beesC. changing its leaf chemistryD. shaking caterpillars off13. According to the passage, the willow tree was able to communicate with other trees by______.A. waving its branchesB. giving off a special smellC. dropping its leavesD. changing the color of its trunk14. According to this passage, bees communicate by ______.A. making special movementB. touching one anotherC. smelling one anotherD. making unusual sound15. The author believes that the incident described in the passage ______.A. cannot be taken seriouslyB. should no longer be permittedC. must be checked more thoroughlyD. seems completely reasonableSchooling and EducationIt is commonly believed in the United States that school is where people go to get an education. Nevertheless, it has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and education implied by this remark is important.Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no limits. It can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or in the job, whether in a kitchen or in a theatre. It includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a respected grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has a certain predictability, education quite often produces surprises. A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known of other religions. People are engaged in education from infancy(婴儿期)on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It is a lifelong(一生的)process, a process that starts long before the start of school, and one that should be an integral(基本的)part of one's entire life.Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little from one setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take assigned(指定的)seats, are taught by an adult, use similar textbooks, do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that are to be learned, whether they are words or an understanding of the working of government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subjectbeing taught. For example, high school students know that they are not likely to find out in their classes the truth about political problems in their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions surrounding the formalized process of schooling.16. Which of the following is true according to the author?A. School is the place where people get informal educationB. Education means schoolingC. Education can be both formal and informalD. Going to school is the only way to receive education17. Education is different from schooling in that ______.A. the former is predictable while the latter is notB. the former is specific while the latter is notC. the former is a formalized process while the latter is notD. the former is more open-ended and all-inclusive than the latter18. When does education begin?A. Before one enters schoolB. After one enters schoolC. After one graduates from collegeD. After one retires from work19. The fact that children arrive at school at about the same time shows that ______.A. schooling imposes a lot of strain on the studentsB. schooling has a clear boundaryC. schooling follows more or less the same pattern.D. schooling includes different aspects of learning20. What is the author's attitude toward schooling?A. PositiveB. NegativeC. Neutral(中立的)D. Supportive四.Translation—English to Chinese英译汉(5*3’)1.If producers can substitute a cheaper foreign source of labor relative to thedomestic wage rate, many will choose to move their production overseas, creating increased unemployment.如果生产者可以用廉价的外国劳动力来替代国内资源,很多生产者将会选择把他们的生产转移至海外,从而造成失业率的上升。

Andrew Buxton, the bank's managing director and an offspring of its founding families, was a pointed chairman and chief executive, with effect from January 1st of next year. It seemed a glorious victory for good business management. Is the problem solve do certainly not.No sooner had Mr. Buxton been appointed chairman and chief executive than big shareholders and quite a few board members began quietly to question his ability to do both jobs at once. Now, weeks before he is due to move up, the questions are louder. Many wish the bank had seized the opportunity last April to separate the two top posts. And privately, some wonder whether Mr. Buxton is the right man for either one. What started as a thoroughly British Whispering Campaign has assumed much bigger dimensions.1. Mr. Buxton has suffered it all, but in truth he has no way out. After weeks of talking to shareholders and discussing with his non-executive directors, he has accepted that Barclays will separate the top jobs sometimes in the future. How? He says that there has been no formal discussion of it in the boardroom.2. Formally or informally, it has been agreed that Mr. Buxton will not be moved from his chairmanship, and that Barclays must find a strong chief executive. Opinions differ as to whether this person should be chosen from inside or outside the bank. Several board members believe that there is no ideal candidate inside Barclays.3. Neither shareholders nor non-executive directors want to wait long. If the right candidate can be found, the bank could combine the announcement of a new appointment with its annual results at the end of March. Mr. Buxton stressed the importance of getting this next step right, particularly since any appointment will mean overturning a management reorganization that was announced only eight months ago.18. Paragraph 1_____________19. Paragraph 2______________20. Paragraph 3______________A. Anxieties about choosing the right candidatesB. Proposals for candidates of the chief executiveC. Lack of ideal candidate inside BarclaysD. Buxton's agreement to give up one of his two top jobs Questions 21-25The expression benchmarking has become one of the fashionable words in current management discussion. The term first appeared in the United States in the 1970s but has now gained world wide recognition. But what exactly does it mean and should yourcompany be practicing it?One straightforward definition of benchmarking comes from Chris Tether managing director of a New Zealand-based consultancy firm specializing in this area. “Benchmarking involves learning about your own practices, learning about the best practices of others, and then making changes for improvement that will enable you to meet or beat the best in the world.” The essential element is not simply imitating what other companies do but being able to adapt the best of other firms’ practices to your own situation.Instead of aiming to improve only against previous performance and scores, companies can use benchmarking to inject an element of imagination and common sense into their search for progress. It is a process which forces companies to look closely at those activities which they may have been taking for granted and comparing them with the actives of other world-beating companies. Self-criticism is at the heart of the process although in some cases this may upset managers who are reluctant to question long established practices. The process of identifying best practice in other companiesdoes not just mean looking closely at your competitors. It might also include studying companies which use similar processes to your own, even though they are producing different goods. The point is to look at the process rather than the product. For example, Italian computer company Arita wanted to improve the quality of its technical manuals and handbooks. Instead of looking at manuals produced by other computer companies, Arita turned to a publisher of popular handbooks such as cookery books, railway timetables and car repair manuals. As Arita’s Technical Director Claudio Benclii says, “All of these handbooks are communicating complex information in a simple way - exactly what we are aiming to do. And in many cases they succeed far better than any computer company.”There is some disagreement between benchmarking specialists as to the best methods to follow when starting a benchmarking exercise in your firm. Everyone agrees that the process must have the full approval of senior management but that it is best carried out by a comparatively small team. Some consultants feel this should be as small as three people but most favor a team of between five and eight at least one of whomshould have some prior knowledge of the benchmarking process. In practice this often means bringing in an outside consultant at least at the beginning. Once the team is assembled there can be anything from three to five formal stages in the process different approaches but whatever the exact technique benchmarking can only work if everyone in the company from top to bottom is committed to change.21. According to the writer, benchmarking must always involve_____________.A. changing your activities on the basis of new informationB. copying exactly what your competitors doC. identifying the best company in your marketD. collaborating with other companies in the same field22. Some managers may resist benchmarking because____________.A. it takes their activities for grantedB. it makes them examine the way they workC. it makes others question their efficiencyD. it gives them a lot of extra work23. Anita found that a publishing company could__________.A. make more money than a computer firmB. producetechnical manuals for themC. show them how to improve their own manualsD. help them move into new markets24. Benchmarking specialists agree that in order to succeed there must be___________.A. a team of no more than three peopleB. total support from top managersC. a fixed timetable for the processD. an outside consultant it the team25. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this article?A. to recommend the process of benchmarkingB. to criticize firms that do not carry out benchmarkingC. to give tactual information about benchmarkingD. to explain why benchmarking does not suit every firm Questions 26–30The Negotiating TableYou can negotiate virtually anything. Projects, resources, expectations and deadlines are all outcomes of negotiation. Some people negotiate deals for a living. Dr. Herb Cohen is one of these professional talkers, called in by companies tonegotiate on their behalf. He approaches the art of negotiation as a game because, as he is usually negotiating for somebody else, he says this helps him drain the emotional content from his conversation. He is working in a competitive field and needs to avoid being too adversarial (对抗的). Whether he succeeds or not, it is important to him to make a good impression so that people will recommend him.The starting point for any deal, he believes, is to identify exactly what you want from each other. More often than not, one party will be trying to persuade the other round to their point of view. Negotiation requires two people at the end saying “yes”. This can be a problem because one of them usually begins by saying “no”. However, although this can make talks more difficult, this is often just a starting point in the negotiation game. Top management may well reject the idea initially because it is the safer option but they would not be there if they were not interested. It is a misconception that skilled negotiators are smooth operators in smart suits. Dr. Cohen says that one of his strategies is to dress down so that the other side can relateto you. Pitch your look to suit your customer. You do not need to make them feel better than you but, for example, dressing in a style that is not overtly expensive or successful will make you more approachable. People will generally feel more comfortable with somebody who appears to be like them rather than superior to them. They may not like you but they will feel they can trust you.Dr. Cohen suggests that the best way to sell your proposal is by getting into the world of the other side. Ask questions rather than give answers and take an interest in what the other person is saying, even if you think what they are saying is silly. You do not need to become their best friends but being too clever will alienate them. A lot of deals are made on impressions. Do not rush what you are saying---put a few hesitations in; do not try to blind them with your verbal dexterity. Also, you should repeat back to them what they have said to show you take them seriously.Inevitably some deals will not succeed. Generally the longer the negotiations go on, the better chance they have because people do not want to think their investment andenergies have gone to waste. However, joint venture can mean joint risk and sometimes, if this becomes too great, neither party may be prepared to see the deal through. More common is a corporate culture clash between companies, which can put paid to any deal. Even having agreed a deal, things may not be tied up quickly because when the lawyers get involved, everything gets slowed down as they argue about small details.Dr. Cohen thinks that children are the masters of negotiation. Their goals are totally selfish. They understand the decision-making process within families perfectly. If Mum refuses their request, they will troop along to Dad and pressure him. If all else fails, they will try the grandparents, using some emotional blackmail. They can also be very single-minded and have an inexhaustible supply of energy for the cause they are pursuing. So there are lessons to be learned from watching and listening to children.26. Dr. Cohen treats negotiation as a game in order to __________.A. put people at easeB. remain detached(超然的)C. be competitiveD. impress rivals27. Dr. Cohen says that when you are trying to negotiate you should_____________.A. adapt your style to the people you are talking toB. make the other side feel superior to youC. dress in a way to make you feel comfortable.D. try to make the other side like you28. According to Dr. Cohen, understanding the other person will help you to___________.A. gain their friendshipB. speed up the negotiationsC. plan your next move.D. convince them of your point of view29. Deals sometimes fail because____________________.A. negotiations have gone on too longB. the companies operate in different waysC. one party risks more than the other.D. the lawyers work too slowly30. Dr. Cohen mentions children’s negotiation techniques to show that you should________.A. be prepared to try every routeB. try not to make people feel guiltyC. be careful not to exhaust yourselfD. control the decision-making process.Part III. W arm-blooded animals maintain a steady temperature by constantly replacing lost surface heat; smaller animals, which have more skin for every ounce of body weight, must produce heat faster than bigger ones. Because smaller animals burn fuel faster, scientists say they live faster. The speed at which an animal lives is determined by measuring the rate at which it uses oxygen. A chicken, for example, uses one-half cubic centimeter of oxygen every hour for each gram it weighs. The tiny shrew uses four cubic centimeters of oxygen every hour for each gram it weighs. Because it uses oxygen eight times as fast, it is said that the mouse-like shrew is living eight times as fast as the chicken. The smallest of the warm-blooded creatures, the hummingbird, lives a hundred times as fast as an elephant. There is a limit to how small a warm-blooded animal can be. A mammal or bird that weighed only two and a half grams would starve to death. It would burn up its food too rapidly and would not be able to eat fast enough to supply more fuel.1. The passage says that every animal is a living radiator because it_____.A. produces heat in its body cellsB. burns fuel to produce heatC. sends out heat from its bodiesD. requires oxygen to produce heat2. W arm-blooded animals maintain a steady temperature by_____.A. restoring heat continuallyB. storing heat in their body cellsC. regulating the amount of heat producedD. regulating the amount of heat given off3. The amount of oxygen an animal uses depends on_____.A. how much it weighsB. what food it eatsC. what it is likeD. how long it lives4. An animal weighing less than 2.5 grams would starve because it would not be able to _____.A. get enough oxygenB. maintain its body temperatureC. burn its food fast enoughD. eat fast enough to supply fuel5. What is implied but not stated in the passage?A. There is no limit as to how large a warm-blooded animal can be.B. The hummingbird lives faster than any other warm-blooded creature.C. Small animals have less skin for their body weight than large ones.D. The hummingbird is the smallest of the warm-blooded animals.Passage 2California is a land of variety and contrast. Almost every type of physical land feature, short of arctic ice fields and tropical jungles can be found within its borders. Sharply contrasting types of land often lie very close to one another.People living in Bakersfield, for instance, can visit the Pacific Ocean and the coastal plain, the fertile San Joaquin Valley, the arid Mojave Desert, and the high Sierra Nevada, all within a radius of about 100 miles. In other areas it is possible to go snow skiing in the morning and surfing in the evening of the same day, without having to travel long distances.Contrast abounds in California. The highest point in the United States (outside Alaska) is in California, and so is the lowest point (including Alaska). Mount Whitney, 14 494 feet above sea level, is separated from Death Valley, 282 feet below sea level, by a distance of only 100 miles. It has Lake Tulainyo, 12 020 feet above sea level, and the lowest lake in the country, the Salton Sea, 236 feet below sea level. Some of its lakes, like Owens Lake in Death Valley, are not lakes at all; they are dried-up lakebeds. In addition to mountains, lakes, valleys, deserts, and plateaus, California has its Pacific coastline, stretching longer than the coastlines of Oregon and Washington combined. 6. Which of the following is the lowest point in the United States? A. Lake Tulainyo. B. Mojave Desert. C. Death Valley. D . The Salton Sea. 7. Where is the highest point in the United States located? Passage 3 Children are a relatively modern invention. Until a few hundred years ago they did not exist. In medieval and Renaissance painting you see pint-sized men and women, wearing grown-up clothes and grown-up expressions, performing grown-up tasks. Children did not exist because the family as we know it had not evolved. Children today not only exist; they have taken over, in no place more than in America, and at no time more than now . It is always Kids’ Country here. Our civilization is child -centered, child-obsessed. A kid’s body is our physical ideal. In Kid’s Country we do not permit middle -age. Thirty is promoted over 50, but 30 knows that soon his time to be overtaken will come. W e are the first society in which parents expect to learn from their children. Such a topsy-turvy (颠倒) situation has come about at least in part because, unlike the rest of the world, ours is an immigrant society , and for immigrant the only hope is in the kids. In the Old Country , that is, Europe, hope was in the farther, and how much wealth he could accumulate and pass along to his children. In the growth pattern of America and its ever-expanding frontier, the young man was ever advised to GO WEST; the far ther was ever inheriting from his son. Kids’ Country may be the inevitable result. Kids’ Country is not all bad. American is the greatest country in the world to grow up in because it is Kids’ Country . W e not only wear kids’ clothes and eat kids’ food; we dream Kids’ dreams and make them come true. It was, after all, a boy’s game to go to the moon. If in the old days children did not exist, it seems equally true today that adults, as a class, have begun to disappear, condemning all of us to remain boys and girls forever, jogging and doing push-ups (俯卧撑) against eternity . 11. The author uses the example of the Renaissance painting to show that _______. A. adults showed less concern for children than we do now B. adults were smaller and thinner at that time, but they still had a lot of work to do C. children looked and acted like adults at that time D. children were not permitted to appear in family paintings at that time 12. In the third paragraph, the Old Country is contrasted with America _______. A. to show differences in family size B. to show differences in attitudes towards family relations C. to sow two kinds of geography D. to show two different kinds of economic relations between generations 13. Going to the moon is an example of _______. A. America’s dreams and creativity B. America’s childish and queer behavior C. why America hasn’t grown up D. why America is considered the greatest country in the world 14. According to the passage, which of the following is true? A. It is very difficult for the middle-aged to live in America. B. America is Kids’ Country because the majority of its people are young and vigorous. C. Kids’ Country was taking shape in America when immigrants poured into the country D. America is more of Kids’ Country tha n any other countries in the world.15. By saying “condemning all of us to remain boys and girls forever, jogging doing push -ups against eternity ,” the author means that _______. A. she thinks people shouldn’t be so concerned about physical fitness B. she feels too old and tired to do such hard exercise C. American society is overemphasizing youth and physical appearance D. what happened to children centuries ago may occur to adults in America soon Passage 4 By far the most common snake in Britain is the adder. In Scotland, in fact, there are no other snakes at all. The adder is also the only British snake with a poisonous bite. It can be found almost anywhere, but prefers sunny hillsides and rough open country , including high ground. In Ireland there are no snakes at all. Most people regard snakebites as a fatal misfortune, but not all bites are serious, and very few are fatal. Sometimes attempts at emergency treatment turn out to be more dangerous than the bite itself, with amateurs heroically , but mistakenly , trying do-it-yourself surgery and other unnecessary measures. All snakes have small teeth, so it follows that all snakes can bite, but only the bite of the adder presents any danger. British snakes are shy animals and are far more frightened of you than you could possibly be of them. The adder will attack only if it feels threatened, as can happen if you take it by surprise and step on it accidentally or if you try to catch it or pick it up, which it dislikes intensely . If it hears you coming, it will normally get out of the way as quickly as it can, but adders cannot move very rapidly and may attack before moving if you are very close. The effect of a bite varies considerably . It depends upon several things, one of which is the body-weight of the person bitten. The bigger the person, the less harmful the bite is likely to be, which is why children suffer far more seriously from snake bites than adults. A healthy person will also have better resistance against the poison. V ery few people actually die from snakebites in Britain, and though these bites can make some people very ill, there are probably just as many cases of bites having little or no effect, as there are of serious illness. 16.
