Douglas insists that “reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible”.Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to plan cleverly the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity: It can be seen and observed.Learning to read involves all that each individual does to understand the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny. If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the long search for knowledge? Smith has one principle rule for all teaching instructions. “Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and freque nt experience for children.”When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them properly, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is got rid of. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the chance to solve the problem of learning to read by learning.44. They try to arrive early because the baskets disappear quickly, and then they have to wait in line for their turn to wander the store aisles(过道).With purple baskets in hand, shoppers can consider their romantic options while they pick out their groceries. When they are ready to pay, they can go to the checkout line for singles who want to chat. Most of the people who look for love in the supermarket are skeptical of Internet dating. They know that it is easy to embellish(美化)one’s appearance or to lie about one’s age over the Internet. The supermarket, on the other hand, is considered a safe and casual environment in which to meet a potential match. In addition, what one finds in another’s grocery basket can say a thing or two about that person’s character or intentions. Buying pet food can be a man’s way of showing a potential match that he has a sensitive side. Women who fill their baskets with low-fat food show their healthy style of living. The most beautiful andstructurally ordered are the round webs. The mainfunction of the web is to stop and hold flying insects, large and heavy insects as well as environmental forcesfrom wind and rain for at least a day in most cases. The round web is found to have two maincharacteristics. The first is its geometry, which consistsof an outer frame and a central part from which threadsradiate outward. Enclosed in the frame are capturespirals winding round and round from the web center out to the frame. The whole web is in tension and held in place by anchor threads, which connect the frame to the surrounding plants or objects. The second and perhaps most important characteristic is the material with which it is built. Spider silk is a kind of natural material that gives this lightweight fiber a strength comparable to that of steel, while at the same time making it very elastic(有弹性的). Two types of silk threads are used in the web. One is highly elastic and can stretch to almost twice its original length before breaking and, for most types of spiders, is covered in glue. This type is used in the capture spiral for catching and holding insects. The other is stiffer and stronger, and is used for the radius, frames and anchor threads, which allows the web to stand forces and to keep its structural strength through a wide range of environmental conditions.52. What does the word “so” in the first parag raph refer to?A. To catch and keep small creatures.B. To find a good material for the web.C. To make the webs beautiful and well ordered.D. To make the threads long enough.53. Which of the following best describes the threads used in the capture spiral?A. Natural and lightweight.B. Strong and stiff.C. Smooth and elastic.D. Strong, sticky and elastic.55. What is this passage mainly about?A. The wisdom of spiders.B. The function of round spider webs.C. The structure of round spider webs.D. Recently I and other Red Cross volunteers met a group of victims from Hurricane Katrina. We were there, as mental health professionals, to offer "psychological first aid"and I was struck by the simple healing power of presence. As we walked in the gate to the shelter, we were greeted with a burst of gratitude (感激) from the first person we met. I felt appreciated, but also guilty, because I hadn't really done anything yet.I first realized the power of presence many years ago when a friend's mother passed away unexpectedly. I had received a call saying she had just passed away. I wanted to rush down there immediately, but didn't want to intrude (打扰) on this very personal period of sadness. I was torn about what to do. Another friend with me then said, "Just go. Just be there."I did, and I will never regret it.Since then, I have not hesitated to be in the presence of others. Once I sat at the bedside of a young man suffering from the pain of his AIDS —related dying. He was not awake, and obviously unaware of others' presence. However, the atmosphere was by no means solemn. His family, playingguitars and singing, allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive. In my life, I am repeatedly struck by the healing power of presence. In it, none of us are truly alone. It is not only something we give to others but also changes me for the better.1.Why were the hurricane victims grateful to the author?A. He built shelters for them.B. He gave immediate first aid to them.C. He came to stay with them.D. 课时练1阅读理解提速练Ⅰ阅读理解A(2018·唐山一模)A new research brings some good news for loversof spicy(辛辣的) foods, after finding that eating hot red chili peppersmight help to extend lifespan(寿命).Consuming hot red chili peppers might reduce death risk, say Chopan and Littenberg from the research team. In hot peppers, such as Mexico peppers, the strong flavor comes from a compound(化合物),which does not exist in sweet peppers or onions. Studies have suggested that this compound can offer wealth of health benefits.A study of more than 16,000 people in the United States showed that individuals who consumed red chili peppers had a lower risk of death from all causes over an average of 18 years than those who did not eat the spicy food. Compared with participants who did not consume hot red chili peppers, those who did were found to be at a 13 percent reduced risk of all-cause death. For example, a recent study reported by Medical News Today, found that the compound might have the potential to stop breast cancer, while an earlier study linked the compound to a reduced risk of digest system cancers. Still, the available data suggested that hot red chili pepper consumption was most strongly associated with a reduced risk of death from heart disease. While the researchers are unable to identify the specific compound by which red chili peppers might extend lifespan, the team says that it is likely due to the compound that is effectively against obesity(肥胖症).Overall, the team says that these latest findings support those of the 2015 study, linking spicy foods intake to reduced risk of death by showing “a significant decrease in death associated with hot red chili pepper consumption”. However, Chopan and Littenberg note that the earlier study was only conducted in Chinese adults, so the new research makes these findings more credible.【解题导语】一项新的研究发现,食用红辣椒之类的辛辣食物可能会降低死亡风险,延长人类的寿命。

But if you decide to be strong, the hardship will turn out to be fortune on which new hopes will arise. In an accident,a boy lost both his arms and his father who was the main source of support for the family. Since then, he has had to depend on the arms of his younger brother. For the sake of taking care of him, his younger brother became his shadow, never leaving him alone for years. Except for writing with his toes, he was completely unable to do anything in his life.As the two brothers grew up together, they had their share of problems and they would often quarrel. Then one day, his younger brother wanted to leave, living his own life, as many normal people do. So he was heart-broken and didn’t know what to do.A similar misfortune befell a girl, too. One night, her mother who suffered from chronic mental illness disappeared. Her father went out to look for her mother, leaving her alone at home. She tried to prepare meals for her parents, only to overturn the kerosene light on the stove, resulting in a fire which took her hands away.Though her elder sister who was studying in another city showed her willingness to take care of her, she was determined to be completely independent. At school, she always studied hard. Most of all she learned to be self-reliant.One day, the boy and the girl were both invited to appear on a television interview program. The boy told the TV host about his uncertain future at being left on his own, whereas the girl wasfull of enthusiasm for her life. They both were asked to write something on a piece of paper with their toes. The boy wrote: My younger brother’s arms are my arms; while the girl wrote: Broken wings, flying heart.【解题导语】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文.文章通过介绍两个不同的故事启迪我们积极勇敢地面对困难.4、What attitude should we take towards a misfortune in the author’s opinion?A、Trying to find an escape from it.B、Facing it bravely with a positive mind.C、Asking for help from your relatives.D、Ignoring it and living a normal life.B解析:推理判断题.根据第一段的第二句“But if you decide to be strong, the hardship will turn out to be fortune on which new hopes will arise.”可推知,面对困难我们应当积极勇敢地面对,故B项正确.5、After the accident, the boy____________、A、decided to live with his brotherB、learnt to do things with his toesC、made a living all by himselfD、depended wholly on his brotherD解析:细节理解题.根据第二段的第二句“Since then, he has had to depend on the arms of his younger brother.”可知,失去双臂后,他就完全依靠他的弟弟,故D项正确.6、Which of the following is TRUE of the girl?A、She lost her mother in an accident.B、Her sister took good care of her.C、She was optimistic and full of courage.D、She led a poor life with her father.C解析:细节理解题.根据最后一段第二句中的“the girl was full of enthusiasm for her life”,并结合第五段可知,她决定独立生活,在学校努力学习;据此可知,女孩在事故后乐观而坚强,故C项正确.7、What did the girl mean by “Broken wings, flying heart.”?A、Never give up hopes in face of hardship.B、It’s not easy for her to live a normal life.C、If a bird loses its wings, it can not fly.D、If you lose your hands, your life will be hard.A解析:句意理解题.“Broken wings, flying heart.”为女孩用脚趾写的话,意为“失去双翼,心仍飞翔.”;结合最后一段第二句中的“the girl was full of enthusiasm for her life”和第五段可知,事故之后,她决定独立生活,在学校努力学习,乐观坚强地面对生活;据此可知,该句是说“面对困难,永远不要放弃希望”,故A项正确.C(2018·广州高考模拟)As a child, visiting the zoo was more apunishment than a treat.I didn’t find the chimps’ tea parties funny, northe bird shows entertaining.Feeding time for seals was less painful, buttheir performances still seemed like they belonged more in a circus. And I hated circuses, especially the animal acts—men teasing lions, girls balancing on elephants and monkeys playing football.I knew that every trick a circus animal did was unnatural, achieved through strict training and quite possibly cruelty.Happily, during my lifetime public attitudes and the law have changed.Circuses using wild animals are now almost extinct, and zoos have definitely evolved. When my children were young,I occasionally took them to our local zoo.The elephants were in tiny cages and the gorillas looked bored as they sat peeling bananas and staring at teasing visitors. Each cage had a sign which listed the animal’s name and where it came from. But,back then, there was little information included about the environmental challenges they faced. As a result, environmentalists and animal lovers often oppose zoos.“Animals belong in the wild” is a common and understandable complaint. But what do the animals themselves prefer?Generally speaking, zoo animals have a longer life. But—you may protest—they are not free. What? Free to be hunted and killed, free to die of hunger or thirst? Maybe sitting in a cage eating bananas isn’t so bad.Not that such conditions are acceptable in modern zoos, due to the work of BIAZA,the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums. These days every zoo requires BIAZA’s approval to operate, and the association sets the standards, observes conditions in zoos and develops animalresearch programmes, both in the UK and abroad.BIAZA also organises the animal exchanges between zoos all over the world.Consequently, today, most zoo animals are born and raised in zoos, live in large, comfortable enclosures and are cared for by welltrained, knowledgeable and caring zoo employees.Of course it’s no substitute for living in the wild but unfortunately this isn’t always possible.Meanwhile, why not visit your local zoo and decide for yourself?【解题导语】本文主要讲述了现代的动物园是如何得到改善的.8、The passage is mainly about________、A、how zoos have improvedB、whether a zoo should be closed downC、a new environmental organisationD、the difference between zoos and circusesA解析:主旨大意题.根据第三段的内容并结合全文可知,本文主要讲述了现代的动物园是如何得到改善的.9、From Paragraph 2,we can guess that the writer believes circus animals________、A、had much shorter lives than those in the wildB、were not treated well by their trainersC、should have been placed in zoosD、were not as intelligent as those in zoosB解析:推理判断题.根据第二段的最后一句“I knew that every trick a circus animal did was unnatural, achieved through strict training and quite possibly cruelty.”可推知,马戏团的动物有可能被驯兽师们虐待.10、Which of the following roles are performed by BIAZA?A、Organising animal study projects and training zoo workers.B、Checking zoo conditions and arranging animal exchanges.C、Designing zoos and approving zoo operations.D、Caring for ill animals and setting zoo standards.B解析:细节理解题.根据倒数第二段的“These days every zoo requires BIAZA’s approval to operate, and the association sets the standards, observes conditions in zoos and develops animal research programmes, both in the UK and abroad.BIAZA also organises the animal exchanges between zoos all over the world.”可知,BIAZA会检查动物园的情况,安排动物交换等活动.11、Which of the following statements about zoos would the writer agree with?A、Zoo animals should be freed into the wild.B、Zoos are more popular now than in the past.C、Zoo animals are more restricted than in the past.D、Zoos now provide caring living conditions for animals.D解析:推理判断题.根据最后一段的第一句“Consequently,today,most zoo animals are born and raised in zoos, live in large, comfortable enclosures and are cared for by welltrained, knowledgeable and caring zoo employees.”可知,作者认为现在的动物园给动物们提供了舒适和充满关爱的环境.D(2018·云南高三11校跨区调研)If our kids don’t fall, they don’t learn to get up. While the researchers are unable to identify the specific compound by which red chili peppers might extend lifespan, the team says that it is likely due to the compound that is effectively against obesity(肥胖症).Overall, the team says that these latest findings support those of the 2015 study, linking spicy foods intake to reduced risk of death by showing “a significant decrease in death associated withhot red chili pepper consumption”. However, Chopan and Littenberg note that the earlier study was only conducted in Chinese adults, so the new research makes these findings more credible.【解题导语】一项新的研究发现,食用红辣椒之类的辛辣食物可能会降低死亡风险,延长人类的寿命。

When it comes to music, scientists find that nurture can overpower nature.A study shows musical preferences seem to be mainly shapedby a person's cultural upbringing and experiences rather thanbiological factors.“Our results show that there is a profoundcultural difference in the way people respond to consonant (和谐的)and dissonant (不和谐的) sounds, and this suggests that other cultures hear the world differently,” says Josh McDermott, a scientist in Cambridge. Some scientists believe that the way people respond to music has a biological basis and that this would overpower any cultural shaping of musical preferences, effectively making them a universal phenomenon. Some musicians, by contrast, think that such preferences are more a product of one's culture. If a person's upbringing shapes their preferences, then they are not a universal phenomenon. The trick to working out where musical preferences come from was to find and test people who hadn't had much contact with Western music. McDermott and his team travelled by aeroplane, car and canoe to reach the remote villages of the Tsimane' people, who are largely isolated from Western culture. In their experiments, McDermott and his colleagues investigated responses to Western music by playing combinations of notes to three groups of people: the Tsimane'and two other groups of Bolivians that had experienced increasing levels of exposure to Western music. The researchers recorded whether each group regarded the notes as pleasant or unpleasant. The Tsimane' are just as good at making acoustic (声响的) distinctions as the groups with more experience of other types of music, the scientists find. Most people prefer consonant tones, but the Tsimane'have no preference between them. “This pretty convincingly rules out that the preferences are things we're born with,”McDermott argues.“Culture plays a role. We like the music we grew up with,” agrees Dale Purves, a scientist at Duke University.“Nature versus nurture is always a_fool's_errand. It's almost always a combination,” he adds.语篇解读:本文介绍了一些科学家关于音乐的实验。
