Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.A new research suggests that animals have a much higher level of brainpower than once thought. If animals do have intelligence, how do scientists measure it? Before defininganimals’ intelligence, scientists defined what is not intelligence. Instinct is not intelligence. It is a skill50 into an animal’s brain by its genetic heritage (基因遗传). Tricks can be learned byrepetition, but no real thinking is 51 . Cuing, in which animals learn to do or not to do certain things by following outside signals, does not demonstrate intelligence. Scientists believe that insight, the ability to use tools, and communication using human language are all 52 measures of the mental ability of animals. When judging animal intelligence, scientists look for insight, which they define as a flash of sudden understanding. When a young gorilla (大猩猩) could not reach fruit from a tree, she noticed crates (木板箱) on the lawn near the tree. She 53 the crates into a pyramid, thenclimbed on them to reach her 54 . The gorilla’s insight allowed her to solve a new problem without trial and error. The ability to use tools is also an important sign of intelligence. Crows (乌鸦) use sticks to pry (撬开) peanuts out of cracks. The crow 55 intelligence by showing it has learned what a stick can do. 56 , otter (水獭) use rocks to crack open crab shells in order to get at the meat. Many animals have learned to communicate using human language. One chimp can recognize and correctly use more than 250 57 symbols on a keyboard. These symbols 58 human words. An amazing parrot can 59 five objects of two different types. He can understand the difference between the number, color, and kind of object. The ability to 60 is a basic thinking skill. In addition, he seems to use language to express his needs and 61 . When ill and taken to the animal hospital for his first overnight stay, this parrot turned to go. “Co me her e!” he c ried to a scientist who works with him. “I love you. I’m sorry. Wanna go back?”The research on animal intelligence raises important questions. If animals are smarter than62 thought, would that change the way humans interact with them? Would animals still be used for food, clothing, or 63 experimentation? Finding the answer to these tough questions makes a difficult 64 even for a large-brained, problem-solving species like our own.50. A. developed B. admitted C. programmed D. injected51. Do you feel nervous when you sit a math exam? For most students, math can be tough but scientists have proved that math problems can actually trigger physical pain.Scientists came to his conclusion with an in-depth experiment, which was published in the Public Library of Science One journal. They began by finding out how much participants fear math. Those involved were asked a series of questions such as how they feel when they receive a math textbook or when they walk into a math lesson.Based on their answers, participants were divided into groups. One group was made up of people who were particularly afraid of math and participants in the other group were more comfortable with the subject. Both groups were then given either math tasks or word tasks. When a math task was going to come next, a yellow circle would appear but when a word task was soon to come, a blue square would be shown.Using a brain-scan machine, scientists noticed that whenever people from Group One saw a yellow circle, their brain would respond in a way similar to when their body is feeling pain. It was like the pain they would fee, for example, if they burnt their hand on a hot stove. But they reacted less strongly when they knew that they would be faced with a word task. However, scientists saw no strong brain response from people in the second group.Math can be difficult, and for those with high levels of mathematics-anxiety (HMA), math is associated with tension, apprehension and fear. “When you are really thinking about the math problems, your mind is racing and you are worrying about all the things that could go wrong,” explained Ian Lyons from University of Chicago, US, leader of the study. “The higher a person’s anxiety of a maths task, the more he activated brain regions associated with threat detection, and the experience of pai n.”More interestingly, the brain activity disappeared when participants actually started dealing with the math tasks. “This means that it’s not that math itself hurts; rather, the anticipation of math is painful,” Lyons said.Based on the study, scientists suggested that things could be done to help students worry less and move past their fear of math, which might mean they perform better in tests.72. In the first stage, scientists ask participants some questions to _.A. see whether math hurtsB. find out how much they fear mathC. observe how their brain responseD. test their endurance of pain73. The underlined word “the anicipation of math” is closest in meaning to .A. the attempt of learning math C. the effort to understand mathB. the motivation to work out math problem D. the act of thinking about math74.Which is the best title for the passage?A. How to overcome math fear.B. Physical pain affects math performance.C. Math pain in your brain.D. Unknown truth about pain.75. What can be concluded from the experiment?A. The anticipation of math has no relation to student s’ con fidence inmath. B. Moderate mathematic anxiety promotes students’ acad emicperformance.C. Effective solutions have been worked out to lower student s’ anx iety of math.D. Physical pain caused by HMA disappears in the process of doing math problem.Section CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.A. Weather is to blameB. Divided opinionsC. Inheriting characteristicsD. Home of the redheadsE. Greater sensitivity to painF. Gene mutation76.Britain may be the most red-headed country in the world. About 1 to 2 percent of the world’s population has red hair, but in the UK the numbers are much higher, with 13 percent of Scots, 10percent of the Irish, and 6 percent of people in England having red hair, according to the BBC.77.Scientists have tried to explain why some people have red hair for some time and now they may have found an answer: the dull weather in Britain. The human body needs vitamin D from sunshine, but unfortunately people living in Britain do not have enough of it because of its maritime climate. In fact, Britain gets even more cloud than countries in the far north of Europe. In Sweden, for example, the average daily hours of sunshine is 5.4. In Scotland it is only 3.1 hours.78.To deal with this, the DNA of people living in these areas has changed slightly; scientists callthis a mutation. Originally, the coloring on our body is a mixture of two kinds of melanin — black melanin and red/yellow melanin, but with certain parts of DNA changed, the production of black melanin is suppressed while only red/yellow melanin is made. The result is red hair, light skincolor, freckles and a greater sensitivity tosunlight.79.However, wha t’s more interesting is that redhead DNA mutation is recessive, which means itis hidden and can often skip generations without showing. At least 1.6 million Scots carry a red-head gene mutation, and most are unaware that they do. This is why a person who does nothave red hair can still produce red-haired children if he or she is a carrier of this special DNA.80.The research on red hair, like many areas of science, is contradictory. In 2002 researchers showed that redheads are more sensitive to pain, and need more anaesthetic during surgery than people with blonde or dark hair. However, in 2005 scientists found that a MCR1R mutation gives redheads a higher tolerance for pain. Research into these aspects of red hair genetics continues. Redheads should though be more careful about their exposure to sunlight as they are atan increased risk of contracting skin cancer. If you are a redhead, the advice is not to stay out of the sun, but to be careful about how much exposure you get, and to cover yourself with a higher factor sunscreen.Section DDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.Pizza Hut lovers, you can now smell just like your favorite food. Pizza Hut launches its own perfume that smells like a fresh pizza pie. This is not a joke — although it started as one! While it might seem like an unusual venture for the brand famous for pizza, the company’s perfume is already available as a limited edition product.According to the Globe and Mail, the project started out as a joke by Grip Limited, an advertising firm that works with Pizza Hut in Canada, who asked the chain’s Facebook fans to imagine the pleasant smell of a fresh-delivered pie as a perfume —and to name it. Fans responded to the idea so enthusiastically that Grip Limited decided to take the joke a step further and make the perfume a reality.A month and a half later, to celebrate that Pizza Hut Canada had gotten 100,000 fans, the chain’s community managers announced that the first 100 people to message them would actually get a bottle of Pizza Hut perfume. And sure enough, the bottles were shipped to those 100 lucky fans before Christmas.Grip Limited isn’t the only company to attract attention with odd aromas (芳香). Four years ago, Burger King offered a $4 meat-scented body spray for men. Before that in 2006, Stilton created a perfume meant to mimic (模拟) the scent of blue cheese.Pizza Hut Canada has not announced any plans to make more of the perfume in the future. Most chocolate today comes from West Africa, where small landholders grow more than three million tons of the fruit of the cocoa tree. To turn that fruit into chocolate requires labor-and much of that labor is performed by children. More than 100, 000 children in Ivory Coast and Ghana help produce more than half of the world's cocoa, according to the US State Department. Worse, at least 10, 000 0f these kids are likely treated as slaves. The cocoa industry, including giants such as Hershey's or Cadbury, promised in 2001to end such child labor in the cocoa gardens. But the deadline for voluntary compliance has been continually pushed back and the current goal is to ensure that some 50 percent of farms are child-labor free. Fair Trade certified chocolate can help, as well as ensure that African farmers profit from the cocoa trade.。

The neighbors came out of their houses to see if we had a gas leak!Determined, Dad filled our plates with steaming stew and passed them around. It didn't look that bad, and after the first wave had shut down my ability to smell, it didn't offend the nose so much ,either.I took a taste. It would never win a prize in a cooking competition ,but it was surprisingly edible, and we drank up every last drop of soup!24.Why did Dad clean Old Man McColgin's chicken house regularly? Here are some discoveries from health experts. Many studies looking into the lives of centenarians(百岁老人) look at what they eat. Many people who live into their hundreds live in the Mediterranean [medtəreni:ən] (地中海), so their diet, which is high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and healthy fats like olive oil, gets a lot of attention. The diet has been linked to a healthier older age, lower risk for heart disease, and even protection against memory loss.Education is related to a longer life. A 2012 report from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics found that peo ple with a bachelor’s degree or higher live about nine years longer than people who don’t graduate high school. James Smith, a health economist at the RAND Corporation, is also a supporter of the argumentfor staying in school for better life expectancy. His findings show education should be an even bigger factor than race and income. Educated people are more likely to land better jobs, plan for their future, and make healthier lifestyle choices.Being a hard worker doesn’t necessarily mean job-stress will harm you. The Longevity [lɔndʒeviti] 长寿Study found that plenty of hard workers lived long lives. “Skeptics(怀疑者) may wonder if hard workers really are enjoying life.” the authors write, “We found that productive, hardworking people (even in old age) are not stressed or miserable, but tend to be happier, healthier, and more socially connected than their less productive peers.”Having a strong social group is associated with a longer life. We often turn to friends and family for support, and taking care of the people that matter to us may help us take better care of ourselves, some evidence shows. Some research even suggests that immune(免疫) function is improved when we are around our friends, and that they help with stress management.Research shows that sitting for long period of time put people at risk for shorter lifespans and other health risks. 珠海市普通高中2017届高考高三英语3月模拟考试试题(十)阅读部分03AThe bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get o work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries(食品杂货),saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. People’s feet always move when they dance. They keep on moving until the music stops.People have enjoyed dancing for a very long time. This story is of a different kind of dance. It is a dance without people or music. Yet this dance is one of the oldest in the world. It is the dance of bees.If you have ever watched bees, you know that they are very clever. They also work hard looking for food and bringing it hack to their home. The home of the bees is called a bee hive(巢). Here hundreds even thousands of bees live. They work day and night building small walls of wax(蜡). Then they make their honey. This is the same honey that we eat.Where does the honey come from? Bees live on food from flowers. Have you seen bees flying around a flower garden? When a bee rests on a flower, it tries to go to the center of it. There it takes the food back to the hive.At the hive, bees change this flower food into honey. Then they fly away for more food. How do the bees know where to find the best food in the sweetest flowers? One bee acts as a guide. When it discovers good flowers, it flies back to the hive and tells the others. It does this by dancing for them. The bee dances on the side. This tells the other bees which way to go to find the flowers. But that is not all. The bee dances for some time. And the length of its dance tells the other bees how far they must fly to reach the flowers. When the bees see the dance, they know where the flowers are. They fly away and return with more food for the hive.Sometimes we hear the music of the bees as they fly around. But few people have ever seen them dance. Yet without that dance we might never have sweet honey to eat.54. Almost everyone is wondering,“What happens to all my money?”I never seem to have anything left to put away. Why isn’t a dollar worth as much as it used to be? One dollar is always worth the same amount, that is, 100 cents. But the value of a dollar is how much it can buy. The value of money depends on the cost of living. Economists(经济学家)say that the cost of living is the money that a family must pay for the necessities of life(生活必需品)such as food, housing or rent, clothes, and medical expenses. For many years now, the cost of living has increased greatly, so the value of the dollar has decreased. When a dollar has a low value, you cannot buy as many things with it.No one fully understands why the cost of living keeps increasing, but economists believe that workers and producers can make prices go up. As workers earn more money, they have more money to spend, so many demand more goods. If there is a great demand for certain goods, the prices of these goods go up. At the same time, if there’s a shortage(短缺)of goods, the prices also go up. For example, if everyone wants to buy more and more gas, the price of gas goes up. When companies withhold gas from buyers, they can also make the price of gas go up.Families need to know what happens to their money. They need to make their income meet the cost of living, so many people plan a family budget. A budget(预算)is a list of monthly. If your expenses add up to more than your income, you must find ways to save money. Maybe you’respending too much on entertainment. Or if you’re spending too much on clothes, you may want to sew your own clothes. Budgeting helps you spend your money wisely as the cost of living increases.58. What has troubled many families in the United States?A. A not-large-enough incomeB. Nothing is left over to put awayC. The increasing cost of livingD. A shortage of certain goods59. ________determines(决定) the value of the dollar.A. The governmentB. The cost of livingC. The economistD. The bank60. Valentine was executed(处决)for his Christian beliefs on February 14 more than 1,700 years ago, but the day that has his name is even earlier than that.More than 2,000 years ago, the ancient Romans celebrated a holiday for lovers. As part of the celebration, girls wrote their names on pieces of paper and put them in a large container(容器). Boys reached into the container and pulled one out. The girl whose name was written on the paper became his lover or sweetheart for a year.Lovers still put their names on pieces of paper and they send each other Valentine’s Day cards that tell of their love. Sometimes they also send gifts, like flowers or chocolate candy. Americans usually send these gifts and cards through the mail system. But some use another way to send this message. They have it printed in a newspaper. The cost is usually a few dollars. Some of the messages are simple and short:“Jane, I love you very much. Peter.”Others say more. This one, for example, “Dan, roses are red, violets are blue. I hope you love me as much as I love you. Forever, Mary.”Most of the newspapers that print such messages are local, but one, USA Today, is sold throughout the United Stated and 90 other countries as well. This means someone can send a Valentine message to a lover in a far-away city or town almost anywhere in the world. These messages cost 80 dollars and more. An employee of the USA Today says readers can have a small heart or rose printed along with their messages this year. Will this kind of Valentine’s Day messages reaches the one you love? Well, just make sure he or she reads the newspaper.62. How to understand“the day that has his name is even earlier than that”?A. The holiday for lovers is earlier than Valentine’s Day that was named after Saint Valentine.B. Valentine was executed a long time ago.C. The day when Valentine was executed is earlier than a holiday for lovers in ancient Rome.D. Valentine’s Day existed when Saint Valentine was still alive.63. Because the girl would love the boy who pulled out a piece of paper on which the girl’s name waswritten.B. It’s up to the face.C. Because the boy would love the girl whose name was on the paper pulled out by him.D. Not mentioned in the passage.64. The service not only brings great convenience to people, but causes some problems as well. From my standpoint, bike-sharing system has become an essential part of public transportation in cities and should be actively promoted. Firstly, with an increasing number of people choosing the service to get around, the number of cars on the roads will decrease dramatically, which really helps the environment and reduces traffic jams. Furthermore, this service also benefits individuals in various ways. For example, it provides locals and tourists with a convenient, cheap and healthy means of transport. Those who would otherwise use their own bicycles don’t need to be concerned about such problems as theft, storage and maintenance. In a word, bike sharing is an innovative service, which relieves urban traffic pressure and brings citizens enormous benefits. And more shared bikes should be launched into the market. (163 words)Possible version twoThe passage conveys to us the bike-sharing boom across the country, with more companies springing up in the market. The service not only brings great convenience to people, but causes some problems as well.In my opinion, bike-sharing should not be promoted at present for the following reasons. In order to attract more subscribers, the bike-sharing companies are flooding walkways and other public spaces with hundreds of bikes in the hope of promoting their services, which brings great inconvenience to pedestrians. Furthermore, for lack of relevant regulations, some uncivilized people deliberately damage shared-bikes, for example, by throwing them into rivers or piling them up randomly. A fairly high deposit fee has also been criticized in a country familiar with accessing inexpensive public services. In conclusion, bike-sharing system shouldn’t be promoted before regulations and policies are put in place. The government, companies and users should all play their role in making bike-sharing sustainable and enjoyable. (156 words)书面表达评分建议一、评分原则1.本题总分为25分,按5个档次给分。

White-haired, with a Pennsylvania Dutch accent, Henry could usually be seen in a baseball cap, a T-shirt and a pair of jeans. He was the custodian, and he was the most respected and most well-known person in the building. Everyone loved Henry, and it was because of all the implicit ways he expressed his love for everyone around him. Henry didn’t have to say, “I love you.” He lived his love.Henry was always excited when he met someone new, and he wanted to know everything about them. He felt it was important to do things for people he valued. And Henry seemed to value everyone he met. He brought in articles or cartoons for certain people, went out of his way to introduce people to each other, kept dozens of names and birthdays in his wallet so he could send cards, and helped students keep in touch with graduates who had written to him. He even assisted students who didn’t have enough money to buy their books.Henry taught me --- and many others he supported --- how to live life to the fullest. Not by skydiving or exploring some foreign countries, but by appreciating where you are in life and valuing those around you.The funny thing is that despite all he did and taught us, Henry truly believed that he was the lucky one --- that he was the one who was gaining so much by getting to know us. But all of us who remember Henry know that we were the ones who were truly blessed. We will never forget the man who taught us that best way to say “I love you” often has little to do with the words.65.What does the word “implicit” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?A. The election course is complicated, and the road to the Oval Office is long.Potential candidates must present papers stating their intention to seek their party’s recommendation; delegates then choose from among those running some months later at the national conferences. Before that, however, each state holds a primary election that determines how the state’s voters want the party’s delegates to vote. Methods of choosing the delegates vary from state to state. At the conferences, there are speeches and often heated discussions. It may take several rounds of voting before delegates can agree on a candidate. On the final day of the meeting, the presidential candidate announces his or her choice for vice president.Election Day, by law, is the Tuesday that follows the first Monday in November. On this day, registered voters may cast their votes for president, vice president, and candidates for other federal (联邦), state, and local offices. The popular vote, however, does not determine who will be president. The president is chosen by a vote of the Electoral College, a group of 538 citizens from the 50 states and the District of Columbia who are chosen to cast votes for the president and vice president. The rules for choosing electors, as with the delegates, vary. Each state also decides whether its electoral votes must reflect the popular vote. The number of electors in each state is determined by the number of representatives and senators (议员) that a state sends to Congress and, therefore, may change every 10 years, depending on the results of the United States census (人口普查). The winner must get at least 270 of the electoral votes when the Electoral College meets in December of the election year. The election results are not official, however, until the following January, when Congress meets in a joint conference to count the electoral votes. At the end of the road to the Oval Office is the swearing-in ceremony, at which the new or reelected president takes the oath (誓言) of office on January 20.72.Which of the following is not a requirement for candidates for the presidency of the USA?A. Minimum age of thirty-five years old.B. Previous experience in an elective office.C. Native of the United States of America.D. Bottom residency of fourteen years in the States.73.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. Election results are not authorized until the first month of the coming year.B. Ways to select the delegates of each state are very much the same in the USA.C. The successful presidential candidate wins a maximum number of electoral votes.D. A party’s potential candidate is chosen months before its national conference is held.74.We can conclude from the passage that ______.A. the candidate who wins the popular vote will be the winner of the electionB. the electors don’t have the right to vote against their registered voters’ willC. the presidents of the United States are theoretically picked by the citizens directlyD. the change of a state’s population barely has effect on the presidential election75.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A. The Various Ways of Presidential Election in the USAB. The Qualifications for Being the President of the USAC. The Rules for Choosing Presidential Candidates in the USAD. The Process of the Election for the President of the USASection CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.76.Try to identify any situations that have contributed to your depression. When you know what has got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend, for talking is a way to release the feelings and to receive some understanding. If there’s no one to tell, pouring your heart out to a journal works just as well. Once you air out these thoughts and feelings, turn your attention to something positive. Feeling connected to friends and family can help relieve depression and it may also help them feel there’s something they can do instead of just watching you hurt.77.Depression affects a person’s thoughts, making everything seem miserable, negative, and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life, say considering your strengths, gifts, or blessings may help.78.With depression, a person’s creativ ity and sense of fun may seem blocked. Exercise your imagination by painting, sewing, writing, dancing or composing music, and then you not only get those creative juices flowing, you also loosen up some positive emotions. Take time to play with a friend or a pet, or do something fun for yourself, or find something to laugh about — a funny movie, perhaps, because laughter helps lighten your mood.79.Taking a 15-to 30-minute brisk walk every day --- or dancing, jogging, or biking if you prefer makes you feel less depressed. Once you get in the exercise habit, it won’t take long to notice a difference in your mood. In addition to getting aerobic exercise, some yoga poses can help relieve feelings of depression. Two aspects of yoga --- breathing exercises and meditation --- can helppeople with depression feel better.80.In depression, some people may not feel like eating at all, while others might overeat. If depression has affected your appetite, you’ll need to be extra mindful of getting the right nouri shment, for proper nutrition can influence a person’s mood and energy. So eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get regular meals even if you don’t feel hungry, try to eat something light, like a piece of fruit, to keep you going.Section DDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.“Neither a borrower nor a lender be.”Although this might be excellent advice in matters concerning family and friends, borrowing and lending are frequently the foundation of a booming economy.A loan is a sum of money borrowed for a limited period. A loan may be obtained from an individual or from an institution such as a bank and is generally granted at a specific rate of interest. Interest is the fee that the borrower pays to use the money. An extremely high rate of interest --- and certainly any amount more than law permits --- is called usury. Lending money can be a risky business, for there is always the possibility that the borrower may not be able to pay the loan. For this reason, a lender generally requires the borrower to register something valuable of his or hers, known as collateral (抵押), as a part of the loan agreement. A house or an automobile, investments in the stock market, even the value of a business, are all examples of collateral that a lender may be willing to accept in the event that the borrower fails to pay the loan. There are two major sorts of loans: consumer loans and commercial loans. A consumer loan is one that is made to an individual, and it may be to buy a house or an automobile or to finance aneducation. A commercial loan may be used to start a new business, pay for new equipment and staff, or expand an office or factory. The business of making loans also contributes to a healthy economy by enhancing the employment market. Loans allow consumers to buy and improve homes, creating jobs for carpenters, architects and etc. Loans enable businesses to expand, and when these businesses open a branch office or a new store, they also increase their consumption of office supplies, furnishings, and computers. In a booming economy, money circulates quickly, and each deal represents earnings for someone. It may be reasonable to say that a certain level of debt is normal, even necessary, to a healthy economy as long as the individual borrower or business is careful and try not to take on more than a manageable amount of debt.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)81.“Neither a borrower nor a lender be.” is excellent advice for keeping good family and friendswhile it is __________.82.What is the purpose of collateral in a loan agreement?83.Different from commercial loans, consumer loans may be used to __________.84.How can the individual borrower or business profit from a booming economy?第II卷(共45分)I. Reading ComprehensionSection ASometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are busy trying to earn money to cover living 50 . They don’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too luxurious for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even more out of the question. 51 . my father has a bad temper. When he’s very tired from hard work, it is easy for him to lose his temper One day, my mother was sewing a quilt. I silently sat down beside her and looked at her.“Mom, I have a question to ask you,” I said after a while.“What?” she replied, still doing her work.“Is there 52 between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice. My mother stopped her work and raised her 53 with surprise in her eyes. She didn’t answer immediately. 54 , she bowed her head and continued to sew the quilt.I was very upset because I thought I had hurt her. I looked at her in 55 and didn’t know what to do. But at last I heard my mother say gently “Susan, look at this thread. Sometimes it appears, but most of time it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong. If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can 56 be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there. Love is 57 .I listened carefully but I couldn’t understand her until the next spring, when my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. When they returned from the hospital, they both looked 58 . It seemed both of them had had a serious illness. After they were back, every day in the morning and dusk, my mother would help my father walk slowly on the country road, along which there were many beautiful flowers, green grass and trees. The sun gently shone through the leaves. All of these made up the most beautiful picture in the world. The doctor had said my father would 59 in two months. But after two months he still couldn’t walk 60 . All of us were worried about him.“Dad, how are you feeling now?” I asked him one day.“Susan, don’t worry about me,” he said gently. “To tell you the truth, I just like 61 with your mom. But other people feel regret that no human has been back to the moon since 1972, just three years after Armstrong landed on it and gave his famous “giant leap for mankind” speech.Elliot Pulham, Chief Executive of the Sp ace Foundation, thinks that America’s space agency NASA should get more money, like in the 1960s, during the moon landings programme, when astronauts went to the moon. “In this age of limited goals and tiny NASA budgets, Armstrong is a reminder of what our nation was once capable of,” he said.Armstrong died because of heart problems after surgery. His recovery seemed to be going well, and his death was a surprise to many people. His family described him as a “reluctant American hero” and said: “Honour his example of service, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink.”Speaking from the White House, Barack Obama said Armstrong was “among the greatest of American heroes –not just of his time, but of all time”. He added: “And when Neil stepped on themoon for the first time, it was a moment of human achievement that will never be forgotten.”Buzz Aldrin flew with Armstrong on Apollo 11. He was the second man to walk on the moon. He said he was very sad at the death of his good friend and companion.“When I look at the moon I remember that special moment, over forty years ago, when Neil and I stood on the moon,” he said. “Looking back at our brilliant blue planet Earth hanging in the darkness of space, I realized that even though we were farther away from Earth than two humans had ever been, we were not alone. Almost the entire world took that memorable journey with us. I know many millions of people around the world will join me in mourning the death of a true American hero and the best pilot I ever knew. My friend Neil took the small step but giant leap that changed the world and will always be remembered as a historic moment in human history.”In the US, people felt that he represented the achievement of a past age of American greatness. Today, things are very different: NASA has cancelled a number of missions because they don’t have enough money.Former astronaut Eugene Cernan, the last man on the moon, said: “Neil did something that people thought was impossible.” Others complained about the state of the US. Journalist Andrew Pasternak wrote: “It will take longer to rebuild lower Manhattan after 9/11 than it took to build an entire space program and send a man to th e moon.”Of course, NASA has its modern successes. Its engineers have landed a nuclear-powered robot on Mars. There will also be another Mars mission. It will drill below the planet’s surface. But these achievements are not as exciting as Armstrong’s. NASA administrator Charles Bolden expressed that in his tribute. “As we enter this next era of space exploration, we are standing on the shoulders of Neil Armstrong,” he said.Armstrong was disappointed by what NASA has become. Blogger Eric Berger saw an email from Armstrong and other former astronauts. It expressed frustration at the current problems at NASA and quoted Yogi Berra, an American baseball legend: “If you don’t know where you are going, you might not get there.”65. Why is Neil Armstrong’s death described as ‘a surprise to many’? Because__________.A. he was relatively youngB. it was believed he was recovering well from bypass surgeryC. he was a larger-than-life reminder of what America was once capable ofD. he was the only person to land on the moon66. Which of these sentences best describes the current situation at NASA?A. NASA is expanding its operations and plans to send more men to the moon.B. NASA has had to cancel a number of missions because of a lack of funds.C. NASA has cancelled all further space exploration missions as a result of budget cuts.D. NASA, according to the article is now on the very edge of bankrupt.67. What did Neil Armstrong almost certainly think of the current situation at NASA?A. He was very disappointed.B. He was very angry.C. He was excited.D. He was quite depressed.68. How, according to Buzz Aldrin, will Armstrong’s ‘giant leap’ be remembered?A. as a historic moment that changed the worldB. as a memorable journey with the whole world watchingC. as a representation of the achievements of a past ageD. as a story that can not be repeated for human beingB8 Ways to Avoid Cancer in Your Life1. Eat BlueberriesAside from being a healthy and delicious snack, blueberries contain pterostilbene, which has important colon(结肠)cancer-fighting prosperities. But wait, it gets better. Blueberries also offer a large dose of vitamins C (14 milligrams per cup). So at breakfast, try to take in a cup and a half of blueberries in your cereal or yogurt, or mixed with other berries.2. Drink Pomegranate(石榴)JuiceThe deep red juice of the pomegranate contains polyphenols, isoflavones and ellagic acid, which together create a powerful anticancer mixture. Most recently, researchers from the University of Wisconsin at Madison has discovered that 16 ounces of pomegranate juice per day also may inhibit the growth of lung cancer.3. RelaxFeeling stressed or worried? Find ways to relax and you may reduce your chances of developing cancer. Purdue University researchers tracked 1,600 men over 12 years and found that half of those with high levels of worry died during the study period. Only 20 percent of the optimists died before the study were completed, while 34 percent of the extremely anxious men died of some type of cancer. Instead of stressing about the past or future, focus on the present and relax!4. Take Selenium(硒)Selenium is well known for its cancer-fighting properties. In a study of almost 1,000 men, researchers from the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that when men with the lowest initial levels of selenium in their bodies received a daily supplement over a 4 year period, they cut their prostate(前列腺)cancer risk by a remarkable 92 percent. However, it is possible to get too much of a good thing, so monitor your intake of selenium-containing supplements, Brazil nuts, tuna, meats and grains carefully.5. Eat Sushi(寿司)Seaweed may not be your idea of a great snack, but it is high in fiber, calcium and iron, and dry, roasted seaweed sheets used in sushi provide the additional benefits of vitamins A and C. Sushi rolls are also high in protein—a typical spicy tuna roll has only 290 calories but packs 24 grams of protein. So don’t skimp(节省)on the Sushi!6. Enjoy the OutdoorsVitamin D causes early death of cancer cells. A study published in the American Journey of Clinical Nutrition reported that women who supplemented their diets with 1,000 international. Units of vitamin D every day had a 60 percent to 77 percent lower incidence of cancer ever a four-year period that did women taking a placebo(无效对照剂). Experts recommend supplementing your fun in the sun with 1,100 to 2,000IU of vitamin D each day.7. Breathe Clean AirThere’s no question that secondhand smoke kills. A recent American Journal of Public Health study showed that nonsmokers working in smoky places had three times the amount of carcinogen (致癌物质)in their urine(尿)than nonsmokers working in smoke-free locations. What’s worse, their levels of the carcinogen rose 6 percent for every hour worked. Nine states have banned smoking in all workplaces, bars and restaurants. The message is clear: Do whatever you can to avoid the cloud of smoke.8. Break a SweatEven a small amount of exercise can offer major cancer-fighting benefits. In a study of 29,110 men published in the International Journal of Cancer, men who exercised just once a week had a percent lower risk of metastasis(转移性) prostate cancer than men who didn’t work out at all. The better the frequency, duration and intensity of the exercise, the bigger the reduction in risk, according to the study.69. To prevent yourself from catching colon cancer, you should eat ____ as often as possible.A. sushiB. blueberriesC. pomegranatesD. Vitamin D70. A person is very likely to catch some type of cancer if ______.A. he is very fond of exercise every day.B. he is addicted to smokingC. he is always feeling extremely stressed or worriedD. he likes to have meals in restaurants71. _____ will remarkably reduce the risk of men’s prostate cancer.A. Having a daily supplement of seleniumB. Drinking a cup of pomegranate juice every dayC. Breathing fresh air now and thenD. Taking exercise at least once a weekCAbout this time every year, I get very nostalgic (怀旧的). Walking through my neighborhood on a fall afternoon reminds me of a time not too long ago when sounds of children filled the air, children playing games on a hill, and throwing leaves around in the street below. I was one of those children, carefree and happy. I live on a street that is only one block long. I have lived on the same street for sixteen years. I love my street. One side has six houses on it, and the other has only two houses, with a small hill in the middle and a huge cottonwood tree on one end. When I think of home, I think of my street. Only I see it as it was before. Unfortunately things change. One day, not long ago, I looked around and saw how different everything has become. Life on my street will never be the same because neighbors are quickly grown old, friends are growing up and leaving, and the city is planning to destroy my precious hill and sell the property to contractors. It is hard for me to accept that many of my wonderful neighbors are growing old and won’t be around much longer. I have fond memories of the couple across the street, who sat together on their porch swing almost every evening, the widow next door who yelled at my brother and me for being too loud, and the crazy old man in a black suit who drove an old car. In contrast to those people, the people I see today are very old neighbors who have seen better days. The man in the black suit says he wants to die, and another neighbor just sold his house and moved into a nursing home. The lady who used to yell at us is too tired to bother any more, and the couple across the street rarely go out to their front porch these days. It is difficult to watch these precious people as they near the end of their lives because at once I thought they would live forever. The “comings and goings” of the younger generation of my street are now mostly “goings” as friends and peers move on. Once upon a time, my life and the lives of my peers revolved around home. The boundary of our world was the gutter at the end of the street. We got pleasure from playing night games or from a breathtaking ride on a tricycle. Things are different now, as my friends become adults and move on. Children who rode tricycles now drive cars. The kids who once played with me now have new interests and values as they go their separate ways. Some have goneaway to college like me, a few got married, two went into the army, and one went to prison. Watching all these people grow up and go away makes me long for the good old days.Perhaps the biggest change on my street is the fact that the city is going to turn my precious hill into several lots for new homes. For sixteen years, the view out of my kitchen window has been a view of that hill. The hill was a fundamental part of my childhood life; it was the hub of social activity for the children of my street. We spent hours there building forts, sledding, and playing tag. The view out of my kitchen window now is very different; it is one of tractors and dump trucks tearing up the hill. When the hill goes, the neighborhood will not be the same. It is a piece of my childhood. It is a visual reminder of being a kid. Without the hill, my street will be just another pea in the pod. There was a time when my street was my world, and I thought my world would never change. But something happened. People grow up, and people grow old. Places changes, and with the change comes the heartache of knowing I can never go back to the times I loved. In a year or so, I will be gone just like many of my neighbors. I will always look back to my years as a child, but the place I remember will not be the silent street whose peace is interrupted by the sounds of construction. It will be the happy, noisy, somewhat strange, but wonderful street I knew as a child.72. The writer finds it hard to accept the fact that _____________.A. many of his good neighbors are growing oldB. the lady next door who used to yell at him and his brother is now a widowC. the life of his neighbors has become very boringD. the man in his black suit even wanted to end his own life73. The writer thinks of the past all the more when he sees those who had grown up with him _______.A. continue to consider home to be the center of their livesB. leave the neighborhood they grew up inC. still enjoy playing card games in the eveningsD. develop new interests and have new dreams74. What does the writer mean by saying “my street will be another pea in the pod”?A. his street will be very noisy and dirtyB. his street will soon be crowded with peopleC. his street will have some new attractionsD. his street will be no different from any other street75. Which could be a good title for the passage?A. The Past of My Street will Live ForeverB. Unforgettable People and Things of My StreetC. My Old Street In My Minds Isn’t What It Used to BeD. The Big Changes of My StreetSection C76.With the arrival of the age of “information economy”, intellectual work is becoming a more important source of wealth than manufacturing. Organizations in all walks of life are doing more to spread their information. So people of the Public Relations are hired to speak for them. A lot of our news is actually collected from press releases and reports of events intentionally staged for journalists. In the information age, journalists spend their time, not investigating, but passing on the words of a spokesperson.77.There is a joke in the novel Scoop about the newspaper’s owner, Lord Copper. The editors can never disagree with him. When he’s right about something they answer “definitely”, and when he’s wrong they say “to some extent, Lord Copper.” It seems reasonable to suppose that, in the real world, the opinions of such powerful people still influence the journalists and editors who work for them.78.In countries where the news is not officially controlled, it is likely to be provided by commercial organizations who depend on advertising. The news has to attract viewers and maintain its audience ratings. I suspect that some stories get air-time just because there happen to be exciting pictures to show. In Britain, we have the tabloid newspapers which millions of people read simply for entertainment. There is progressively less room for historical background, or statistics, which are harder to present as a sensational story.79.There is an argument that with spreading access to the internet and cheap technology for recording sound and images we will all be able to find exactly the information we want. People around the world will be able to publish their own eye-witness accounts and compete with the widely-accepted news-gatherers on equal terms. But what it will mean also is that we’ll be subjected to a still greater amount of nonsense and lies. Any web log may contain the latest information of the year, or equally, a made-up story that you will never be able to check.80.Maybe the time has come to do something about it, and I don’t just mean changing your choice of TV channel or newspaper. In a world where everyone wants you to listen to their version, you only have two choices: switch off altogether or start looking for sources you can trust. The investigative journalist of the future is everyone who wants to know the truth.Section DDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in No More Than 10 Words:The iPhone, the iPad, each of Apple’s products sounds cool and has become a fad (一时的风尚). Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter “i” –and many other brands arefollowing suit. The BBC’s iPlayer –which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet –adopted the title in 2008. A lovely bear – popular in the US and UK – that plays music and video is called “iTeddy”. A slimmed-down version of London’s Independent newspaper was launched last week under the name “i”.In general, single-letter prefixes (前缀) have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and e-commerce first came into use. Most “i” products are targeted at young people and considering the major readers of Independent’s “i”, it’s no surprise that they’ve selected this fashiona ble name. But it’s hard to see what’s so special about the letter “i”. Why not use “a”, “b”, or “c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King’s College, London, “i” works because its meaning has become ambiguous. When Apple use s “i”, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive, Thorne told BBC Magazines. “Even when Apple created the iPod, it seems it didn’t have one clear definition,” he says.“However, thanks to Apple, the term is now associated with portability.”adds Thorne.Clearly the letter “i” also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.Along with “Google” and “blog”, readers of BBC Magazines voted “i” as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade. But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with “2000” in their names became fashionable as the year was associated with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the trend inevitably disappeared.81. We can infer that the Independent’s “i” is aimed at __________.82. What does the word “ambiguous” in paragraph 4 means “__________”.83. Nowadays, the “i” term often reminds people of the products which are __________.84. What is the suggestion the writer made in the last paragraph?第二部分:I.Translation:85.我们只有不懈努力才能跟上现代科学的进步。

AA father in Wuhan, nicknamed "Eagle Dad" for his controversial parenting style, has dismissed critics' claims that he pushes his 4-year-old son too hard.Police officer Wang Shaoyan came under the spotlight this month after his child took part in an 18-kilometer race in the Hubei provincial capital. Some parents attacked his methods of extreme physical training, while others reacted strongly to his admission that he regularly exposes the youngster to cold showers. "I just want my son to reach his full potential," Wang said, adding that 4-year-old son not only runs 3 km every day he also takes cold showers from time to time to strengthen his body's resistance and willpower."He has never taken any sick leave from kindergarten," he said proudly. However, some parents find his methods too extreme."I'm not sure a 4-year-old is prepared for such intense training," said Zhang Ruxia a woman who gave birth to two boys in October in Tianjin. "You can have good intentions to train your child at an early age but you also have to consider whether he can take it." Wang responded by saying children are too young to make decisions, and it is up to parents to lead them on the right path."I read many materials before and the whole process is step-by-step without pushing or imposing on my son," Wang said. The father said he was not acting rashly but following a scientific way of education. He said the doubts about his methods reflect the declining standards of modern education."Many people in Japan give their children cold showers too ,and no one is fussing about it," he said. The traditional way of education applied by most of his peers might not necessarily help bring the best out of a child he said.Wang said in addition to the physical training, he has also laid out a detailed and particular program to strengthen the intelligence of the child. "I have hired some university students to expand his knowledge in natural sciences, while playing the video for English-language teaching as well," he said.31. It's time to upgrade(更新)my phone.”Li's impatience is shared by many. Shortly after the season when new products are released, many consumers feel the urge to upgrade their electronic equipment, even though the ones they have still work just fine.As consumers' minds are occupied by Apple's newly released products and debate whether the Google tablet is better than the new Amazon Kindle, it might be time to take a step back and ask: “Do we really need the latest upgrades?"According to Donald Norman, an American author, “planne d obsolescence (淘汰)” is the trick behind the upgrading culture of today's consumer electronics industry.Electronics producers strategically release new upgrades periodically, both for hardware and software, so that customers on every level feel the need to buy the newest version.“This is an old-time trick- they're not inventing anything new,” Norman said. “This is a wasteful system through which companies-many of them producing personal electronics - releasepoor-quality products simply because they know that, in six months or a year, they'll put out a new one.”But the new psychology of consumers is part of this system ,as Norman admitted,“We now want something new ,something pretty, the next shiny thing.” In its most recent year, Apple's profit margin was more than 21 percent. At Hewlett-Packard ,the world's biggest PC maker ,it was only 7 percent.Apple's annual upgrades of its products create sales of millions of units as owners of one year's MacBook or iPhone line up to buy the newest version, even when the changes are slight. As to Li Jijia ,the need for upgrading his smart-phone comes mainly from friends and classmates. When they are switching to the latest equipment, he worries about feeling left out.“Some games require better hardware to run,”said Li. “If you don't join in, you lose part of the connection to your friends.”39. When handwritten essays were introduced on the SAT exams for the class of 2011, just 15% of the most 1.5 million students wrote their answers in cursive (草写字母).T h e rest? Block letters. And those college hopefuls are just the first edge of a wave of US students who no longer get much handwriting instructions in the primary grades, frequently 10 minutes a day or less. As a result, more and more students struggle to read and write cursive. At Keene Mill Elementary School in Springfield, all their poems and stories are typed. Children in Fairfax County schools are taught keyboarding beginning in kindergarten. Older students who never mastered handwriting say it doesn't affect their grades. There are those who say the culture is at a crossing, turning from the written word to the typed one. If handwriting becomes a lost form of communication, does it matter? It was at University of Virginia that researchers recently discovered a previously unknown poem by Robert, written in his unique script. Handwritten documents are more valuable to researchers, historians say, because their authenticity (真实性)can be confirmed. Students also find them more fascinating. The loss of handwriting also may be a cognitive (认知的)opportunity missed. Several academic studies have found that good handwriting skills at a young age can help children express their thoughts b e t t e r-a lifelong benefit. It doesn't take much to teach better handwriting skills. At some schools in Prince George's County, elementary school students use a program called Handwriting Without Tears for 15 minutes a day. They learn the correct formation of manuscript letters through second grade, and cursive letters in third grade. There are always going to be some kids who struggle with handwriting because of their particular neurological (神经系统的)wiring, learning issues or poor motor skills. Educators often point to this factor in support of keyboarding.43. What is the author concerned about after 2011 SAT exams?A. KeyboardingB. HandwritingC. ShorthandD. Block letters44. College.EUp to 90% of school leavers in major Asian cities are suffering from myopia---short-sightedness, a study suggests. Researchers say the "extraordinary rise" in the problem is being caused by students working very hard in school and missing out on outdoor light.Eye experts say that you are short-sighted if your vision is blurred(模糊的)beyond 2m. It is often caused by an elongation (拉抻)o f the eyeball that happens when people are young. According to the research, the problem is being caused by a combination of factors - a commitment to education and lack of outdoor light.Professor Morgan who led this study argues that many children in South East Asia spend long hours studying at school and doing their homework. This in itself puts pressure on the eyes, but exposure to between two and three hours of daylight helps maintain healthy eyes.Cultural factors also seem to play a part. Across many parts of South East Asia9 children often have a lunchtime nap. According to Professor Morgan they are missing out on natural light to prevent short-sightedness.A big concern is the numbers of the students suffering from “high” myopia. One in fi ve of these students could experience severe visual impairment(障碍)and even blindness. These people are at considerable risk-sometimes people are not told about it and are just given more powerfulg l a s se s-t h e y need to be warned about the risk and given some self-testing measures so they can get to an ophthalmologist and get some help. For decades, researchers believed there was a strong genetic component to the condition. But this study strongly suggests an alternative view. "Any type of simple genetic explanation just doesn't fit with that speed of change; gene pools just don't change in two generations. Whether it's a purely environmental effect or an environmental effect playing a sensitive genome, it really doesn't matter, the thing that's changed is not the gene pool—-it's the environment."47. As is mentioned above ,which factor mainly results in students' myopia in South East Asia?A. Genetic faults of the people.B. Elongation of the eyeball.C. The shortage of outdoor light.D. Lack of research into the problem.48. Which of the following statements do you think agrees with Professor Morgan?A. A lunchtime nap is helpful in reducing myopia.B. Glasses keep myopia from getting even worse.C. It's necessary to treat myopia with an operation.D. It's of vital importance to reduce educational pressure.49. What's the main idea of the last paragraph?A. Gene remains the main cause of the long-standing problem.B. The environment is to blame for the extraordinary rise in myopia.C. Short-sightedness has nothing to do with changes in gene pools.D. An environmental effect playing a sensitive genome counts.50. What's the best way to take care of your eyes according to the passage?A. Equip the classroom with better lights.B. Look at the sun from time to time.C. Do eyes exercise regularly.D. Spend more time in the open air.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根椐对话内容,从对话后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
