At senior 1, I had difficulty keeping up with others in English. At that time, I had two choices. I could choose to give up and also I could choose to find out the root of the problem and seek solutions. I chose the latter. I took immediate steps and made determined efforts to improve my English step by step. I began with reciting words and reviewing them several times. To others, it was seemingly too easy to mention. But to me, it was a key step for me to improve my English. If excelling at English is my long journey, I am glad that I took the first step bravely and determinedly in senior 1.This proverb can serve as a reminder that long and arduous as the journey ahead is, we can be closer to our dream as long as we are brave enough to take action.读后续写参考范文Mike paused, and a look of sudden realization crossed his face. He quickly reached into his pocket and pulled out his small white cup. After counting the mere change carefully in it, he held all out toward me, his eyes brimming with care and sincerity. At that moment, an embarrassed silence struck for a moment. I looked up at him in shock. “I know you have no change,” he said with a smiling face, “but I think there’s just enough here for you to take the bus.” I was overwhelmed with guilt as I remembered the lie I had told him.I turned away from his offering hand and reached for my purse. I felt Mike’s eyes fixed on me. I counted out enough money for me to take the bus to the hospital and then offered him the rest. “Thank you,” he said quietly. It was by far the most heartfelt “thank-you” I had heard in my life. He clung to his cup of change, cherishing it as if it were the first gift he had received. Despite his gratitude, I didn’t feel relieved.A half cup of change seemed too small a gift for the man who gave a name to every nameless face I’ve ever seen.(209words)听力原文Text 1W: Hey, Bill.

2014-04-12 2039DWhen the TV viewer turns on his set, what sort of programs does he have to choose from? You might think there would be more programs devoted to entertainment than to anything else, but that’s not the case. In most countries, fewer than 20% of broadcasting hours are devoted to entertainment. U.S. figures are high----34.8% , and the unloving Canadians are even higher with 44%. Except Canada and Italy, all countries give more broadcasting time to education than to either information (news , documentaries and so on) or entertainment programs. Of course, few educational broadcasts take place during peak viewing times. In Japan though , more than 60%of broadcasting time is taken up with education of one kind of anther----just another example of the businesslike Japanese philosophy. In the U.K., the figure is 56.4% . the Italians have fewer educational programs than anyone else. They don’t go in for entertainment either. Only about ten percent of viewing time is devoted to dramas and serials, quiz shows, music, sports etc. You will find more news information programs on Italian TV than anything else. That’s understandable in a country experiencing social and political changes. Italians rely on TV to tell them what’s going on---and events are happening almost too fast to follow. The percentage of time the U.S. devoted to news and documentary programs is much smaller. After education, most TV time is given to entertainment. Many of these programs are shown around the world.68. Based on this passage, the greatest percentage of TV broadcasting hours to educational is in __.A. JapanB. ItalyC.Canada D. the United States69. More news information programs are broadcast on Italian TV than anywhere else because the Italians ___.A. are interested in what is happening in the world.B. Like to follow the changes that are going on in their social lifeC. Prefer to learn news information on TV rather than in newspapersD. Expect TV to tell them the latest news about what is going on in their country70. So far as the broadcasting hours devoted to entertainment , which of the following is true?A. The Japanese figure is the highest in the world.B. The U.S. figure is smaller than the U. K. figureC. The U.K. figure is second to the Japanese figureD. The Canadian figure is higher than that of any other country.71. In the United States, ____.A. TV programs are shown for world audience to watchB. Educational programs are shown during peak viewing times broadcasting hours devoted to education are more than those devoted to entertainmentELondon, April 28---The Man Group, a British hedge fund, is betting that investors will want to read more than the latest how-to- get –rich-quick business book.In a five-year deal worth roughly $3.6 million announced last week, Man has agreed to sponsor(主办)the Booker Prize for Fiction, which will be renamed the Man Booker Prize. Since creating the award in 1969, Booker P.L.G., a British food group, in June 2000, executives began considering attracting outside sponsors. Man will be the first of these. Bill Grimsey, the chief ofthe Big Food Group, saw little business sense in a link between a food supplier and a literary prize, explained Dotti Irving, a spokeswoman for the Booker Prize foundation.Such dissimilarities (差异) have not reduced Man’s enthusiasm forthe prize which is expected to be open for the first time to American authors. David Browne, a spokesman for Man, said most of the firm’s investors are high-net-worth individuals who appreciate literature. “The people who buy hedge funds,” Mr. Browne said, “also read.”Under the new agreement, authors will get more money. The winner of the annual prize, to be awarded in October, will receive $73,000 , up from $30,000 the Australian writer Peter Carey won last year for his novel “True History of the Kelley Gang.”The six short-listed authors will each receive $3,600, up from $1,500. Twenty wheelchair–bound people received $100 bills, while the rest received $1to $ 3 each.“I come out here to tell them that God loves them and I love them and that someone is concerned about them,” Chase said.Chase has given away cash and blessings every Sunday at the same corner for 24 years. Several hundred people wait for him every week.He makes a point of coming on Thanksgiving and Christmas, too, but this is the first year he spent his birthday in the downtown neighborhood where people live mainly in shelters and on dirty sidewalks.“It’s the place that makes m e the happiest.I just love it,” said Chase. “I look forward to coming here.”The money comes from donations he receives from rich and famous people he met during his work as assistant to the president of Loyola Marymount University. The crowd broke into ch oruses of “Happy Birthday” several times. Some people presented him birthday cards, to his delight.Travis Kemp, a 51–year–old disabled man with long black hair, was one of the lucky 20 to receive $ 100. Father Maurice Chase earned a lot of money as assistant to the president of LoyolaMarymount University.CThousands of people began pouring into Pennsylvania from other states. They wanted to buy lottery tickets (彩票). The tickets cost only $ 0.9 each. But that small spending could bring them a reward of $90 million. That was the second largest lottery jackpot (积累奖金) in history.More than 87 million tickets were bought for the Pennsylvania lottery drawing. Those who bought tickets had to choose seven numbers from 1 to 80. The chance of winning was one in 9.6 million. But that little chance certainly didn’t affect ticket sales. In the last few days before the drawing, tickets were selling at the unbelievable rate of 500 per second.Experts say many people buy lottery tickets because they just want to have a piece of the action. Others say the lottery is a stock market for poor people. It allows them to dream about wealth they’ll probably never have. But many people believe lotteries are no better than legalized (合法化的) gambling. Some critics (批评家) note that most people who play are poor and may not be able to afford the tickets. There are also many addicts who take the game seriously. They may pour their life savings into lottery tickets. Some clubs have been formed to help them kick the habit.Politicians like lotteries because they provide money that would otherwise have to come from new taxes. The profits from lotteries are usually used to pay for education or programs for senior citizens. But critics say this arrangement just allows states to legalize vice (恶习), under the name of social progress. No matter whether you regard state lotteries right or not, you cannot refuse to accept their extreme popularity with many Americans.44. In just one minute in the last few days, the Pennsylvania lottery sold _______ tickets.A. 500B. 30,000C. 15,000D. 50,00045. All the following opinions agree with those of the critics EXCEPT _______.A. lotteries are as bad as legalized gamblingB. some poor people spend money unreasonably on lotteriesC. lotteries cause problems like addiction and unwise investmentD. the profits from lotteries used for senior-citizen education is social progress46. The main idea of the passage is that _______.A. lotteries are of great benefit to everyone who buys themB. playing a lottery is just like investing in the stock marketC. popularity of the lottery in America causes disagreementD. lotteries are just legalized viceDAn entire industry has been built upon the assumption that image is everything, but when it comes to it, an appealing image is not enough. If there is no substance(事实)behind the image, the product, service or person will fail eventually.First of all, one should consider how important image is in the selling of products and services. Advertising agencies have raised the art of creating an image to a state of near perfection. Public concept of that product or service is certainly managed by the images created by the advertising agencies. But if the product or service does not live up to the image that was created, the customer will be very dissatisfied and possibly ask for their money back. For example, the Arthur Andersen accounting firm had spent decades building up an image of trustworthiness. But the recent scandal(丑闻)showed that behind that image, it cheated in business practices. Despite the previous positive image, the firm is being accused of criminal actions and it will probably not survive as a business unit. Although the image had been nearly perfect, the reality, behind the image has led to the downfall of the word-famous accounting firm.Similarly, personal advisers can build up a public image for politicians and movie stars. Putting out positive news releases, making sure that only the best photographs are published, and ensuring that the person is seen in all the right places can build up a very positive image in the view of the general commons. But once again, history is filled with examples of both politicians and movie stars that fell from grace like the story of the Hollywood actor giving in to the pressures of fame and fortune. With people, just as with products and services, image is certainly important, but without positive substance behind the image, failure is close. To summarize, it is clear that an appealing image is extremely important to success, whether that image is related to selling a product or service or to the “selling” of a person. But image is only half of the equation(等式). What lies behind that image is every bit as important as the image itself—the person or product must deliver truth on that image or there is little chance for long-term success.47. The down fall of the Arthur Andersen accounting firm is due to ________.A. its previous imagesB. its dishonesty in businessC. its bad managementD. its poor service48. Why did some famous people fall from grace?A. They failed to live up to their images.B. Their images were not well built up.C. They felt much pressure from the public.D. They paid little attention to fame and fortune.49. The structure of the passage is _________.A: Argument P: Point C: Conclusion50. The author tries to argue that ________.A. image creates everythingB. image is the key to successC. truth is unlikely ever to be equaledD. truth and image are equally important第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AAfter a terrible electrical accident, which caused him to become both blind and deaf, the whole world became completely dark and quiet for Robert Edwards for almost ten years. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life. His family, especially his wife, did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he regained the will to live. One hot summer afternoon, he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once. He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet, but he was struck by the lightning. Witnesses thought he was dead but he woke up some 20 minutes later lying face down in muddy water at the base of the tree. He was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes, he could hardly believe what he saw: a plough and a wall. When Mrs. Edwards came running up to him, shouting to their neighbors to call for help, he could see her and hear her voice for the first time in nearly ten years. The news of Robert regaining his sight and hearing quickly spread, and many doctors came to examine him. Most of them said that he regained his sight and hearing from the shock he got from the lightning. However, none of them could give a convincing answer as to why this should have happened. He hardly ever wears a neck tie. “I am working harder than ever.” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable.”More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work. In the United States, the change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday(but only on Friday). This became known as “dress-down Friday” or “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing.” said business consultant Maisly Jones. Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code.” “A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work,” says the owner of a software company, “so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative(保守的)dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale(心境,士气). Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative influence on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.”29.David Smith refers to himself as having been “a clothes addict,” because ________.A. he often wore khaki pants and a sports shirtB. he couldn’t stand a clean app earanceC. he wanted his clothes to look neat all the timeD. he didn’t want to spend much money on clothes30.David Smith wears casual clothes now, because__________.A. they make him feel at ease when workingB. he cannot afford to buy expensive clothesC. he looks handsome in casual clothesD. he no longer works for any company31.In this passage, the following advantages of casual office wear are mentioned EXCEPT __________.A. saving employees’ moneyB. making employees more attractiveC. impro ving employees’ motivationD. making employees happierDIn Los Angeles, drivers spend sixty-one hours every year stuck in traffic. He lives more than 65 kilometers from his office at the University of Southern California, in Los Angeles. He is always late even with the help of a navigation (导航) system. He decided to develop a program called ClearPath for that. He says his program uses historical data to predict traffic conditions even before the driver leaves the house. “What’s unique is that we use a lot of data that’s currently become available including traffic data, weather data, and we analyze that so that we can predict what's going to happen in front of you when you leave home.”Professor Shahabi says his system does more than just respond to current traffic conditions. With ClearPath, he says, a driver can decide what time he wants to leave, and ClearPath will give the fastest route. It looks at the entire road network, including surface streets as well as highways, before the driver hits the road. Professor Shahabi hopes to have ClearPath available nationwide and overseas once they can collect traffic data from other cities.“I always thought that Los Angeles had the worst traffic, but now I know that Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, believe it or not, Singapore, Hong Kong certainly are examples that can immediately use this. ”Professor Shahabi hopes to share this new technology with companies that already have navigation systems, such as Google and Apple.32.Drivers in Los Angeles were mentioned in order to__________.A. show care for themB. introduce their lifeC. solve traffic problemsD. raise the topic33.What is unique about ClearPath?A.
