Vanity FairI recently finished reading the novel "Vanity Fair" by William Makepeace Thackeray. This book is a satirical masterpiece that takes place in 19th-century England and follows the lives of two main characters, Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley. One of the most striking aspects of "Vanity Fair" is its portrayal of the hypocrisy and corruption that existed in English society during that time. Thackeray uses his characters to expose the greed, vanity, and hypocrisy of the upper classes, as well as the harsh realities faced by the lower classes. The character of Becky Sharp is particularly fascinating. She is a strong-willed and cunning woman who uses her intelligence and charm to navigate through the complex social structure of 19th-century England. Becky's character is a stark contrast to Amelia Sedley, who is portrayed as naive and innocent. Amelia's innocence and lack of worldliness make her an easy target for manipulation and exploitation by the more cunning characters in the novel.Throughout the novel, Thackeray explores themes of ambition, greed, and betrayal. The characters in "Vanity Fair"are constantly striving for wealth, power, and social status, often at the expense of their morals and relationships. The novel also highlights the role of women in 19th-century society, showing the challenges and limitations they faced. In conclusion, "Vanity Fair" is a thought-provoking and engaging novel that offers a critical look at 19th-century English society. It is a satirical masterpiece that exposes the hypocrisy and corruption of the upper classes, as well as the harsh realities faced by the lower classes. The novel also explores themes of ambition, greed, and betrayal, and offers a nuanced portrayal of the roles and challenges faced by women in 19th-century society.

A Book Report on Vanity FairName: Class: Date:Author: William M. ThackerayPublisher:航空工业出版社Place of publication:北京Time of publication: 2007Summary:Amelia Sedley and Rebecca Sharn were good friends, and they had completed their studies. They were preparing to depart for Amelia’s house in Russell Square and to live out their lives in “Vanity Fair”. Rebecca was an orphan; she was poor but very beautiful and ingenious. Amelia is the daughter of a rich City merchant. Rebecca was longing for the life of upper class and she took advantages of her beauty and intelligence to make it. In 1815, the two girls got married. Rebecca made full use of her husband Rawdon to meet many famous nobles in order to enter the Vanity Fair. In the meantime, Amelia was enjoying her newlywed with her husband George. However, the Battle of Waterloo made Amelia become widow and the two girls’ fates had begun to change. Rawdon had clearly known Rebecca’s voracity and departed from her. Rebecca found her place in society almost in the end. At the end of the story, Amelia led a happy life and Rebecca lost everything.Thoughts and feelings:There is a sentence that I learn from Vanity Fair: Here was a man, who could not spell, and did not care to read -- who had the habits and the cunning of a boor; who never had a taste, or emotion, or enjoyment, but what was disgusting and foul; and yet in Vanity Fair he had a higher place than the man of most brilliant genius or spotless virtue. I think some people in this book are just behaving like this. After read Vanity Fair I have learnt that in the 18th century, the British were crazy for fame and fortune. They all hoped to enter into the Vanity Fair. But, I do hate the Vanity Fair, because in Vanity Fair, everyone exchanges with other people with masks. What they have seen is also not true. To tell you the truth, I look down upon Rebecca. She has been polluted by the Vanity Fair. I wonder if she ever regards Amelia as her best friend and shows her true care to Amelia. I have to admit that Rebecca is very ingenious. She knows how to attract men’s attention and lies easily and intelligently to get her way. Nearly everything she does is with the intention to secure a stable position for her. Maybe, Rebecca just wants to live a rich life, but the method is wrong and I think she deserves the ending.。

"Vanity Fair" is a novel of critical realism. The story describes the noble and extravagant aristocrats, the smelly entrepreneurs, the scoundrel gentry, the parasites that suck the blood of the people to each other, and you fight me. Bebeck SHARP was a smart, delightful girl, but to get into the upper class, to get rid of poverty, and unscrupulous, the dust of fame and fortune made her fall, become vain, greedy, unfriendly. Becky SHARP would have to go to the red carpet to the upper class. In the end, he was stained with himself. In fact, careful meditation, fame and wealth is only a magnificent dust, it uses its gorgeous appearance, puzzled a lot of people, it makes people arrogant, hypocritical, greed, and then eventually to destroy themselves, and so waking time, but found that he did not recognize the fame and wealth, sold friends and relatives, only to understand fame and wealth It's not the whole time of life, but it's late. Vanity wears a gorgeous mask to knock your door open and seduce your vanity with money. You will enter a mud pit involuntarily. The more you get deeper and deeper, you can't pull it out. You will become unwittingly disgusting, with your own interests as the center, but eventually depravity. There are two main characters in the work, Becky, summer and Emilia. The different fortunes of their honor and disgraceconstitute two parallel plot clues, which strung up a colorful picture of British social life. Xia pun is a typical bourgeois adventurer and speculator. Her character is characterized by two faces, three words, one with honey, and one with one's teeth. Her extreme egoism outlook on life, her tenacious and veritable talent, her adventurous spirit and impudent pursuit of fame and wealth, all embodies the characteristics of the bourgeoisie in the period of free competition. She was the daughter of a poor painter who had been disregarded by school and society from an early age. The social status of humiliation and the inconstancy of humiliation twisted her soul, and the desire to climb into the bourgeois upper class made her selfish and cold. Under the influence of the social atmosphere of admiring vanity and pursuit of money, she quickly fell into a wild family and a conspirators, determined to rely on beauty and conspiracy, to squeeze into the upper class, and to hunt for wealth and power. At the first Vanity Fair, her first goal was the bourgeois grand master, Joss. She was a bit of a coquettish, and she was quick to make a simple Jo as drunken. When the two people were very hot, she found the Playboy Rodon may inherit a big legacy, so she took the wind and seduced Roden's elopement, creating a marriage. Then, with her own bright makeup, she drew out a series of romantic events and pulled the dignitaries of general dvelto and Lord dant into their arms. At this moment, she has money, power, status, prestige, high and high. She has become a lady of the most prosperous society, and even the great honor of seeing the supreme king.Rebecca and Amy Leah, a poor man and a rich man. Apart from the huge difference in money, the treatment and personality are quite different. Rebecca cachet honey belly sword, two face three knife, insidious and vicious, ambitious pursuit of fame and fortune, is "money is the only master" thought, making her in the school, in the society are suffering from discrimination, love and distortion of her thoughts. And Amy Leah, the child of a rich family, was spoiled everywhere, and there was hardly any difficulty in her growing up on her way. Because of that, she did not need to work hard to get into the upper class, so she became naive and even silly. Through the introduction of these two characters, the British society is a world that pursues money and glory; it also shows that the pursuit of fame and wealth not only destroys himself, but also destroys others, and it is the so-called "harm to others".The fame and fortune has been washed out and eliminated from generation to generation, but there is still a ambition to try and try it as if life was the only way of life. Thackeray saw through the "mysteries", written in the eyes of the world, with a goose feather pen to write down a page of lamentable people. In order to say goodbye to this drama, the old guy who said the story picked up the box, put up a puppet, and closed the curtain.。

After reading "The Vanity Fair," I was deeply moved by its depiction of the complexities and illusions within the world of fame and fortune. This literary masterpiece, written by William Makepeace Thackeray, provides a profound insight into the human condition, exposing the flaws and vulnerabilities beneath the glamorous facade of high society. In this reflection, I will delve into the themes, characters, and societal critiques present in the novel, and discuss their relevance in today's world."The Vanity Fair" is set against the backdrop of early 19th-century England, where social standing and wealth determined one's place in society. Thackeray skillfully weaves a tale of ambition, deceit, and moral corruption through the experiences of his characters. At the heart of the story is Becky Sharp, a beautiful and cunning woman who uses her charm and wit to climb the social ladder. Through Becky's rise and fall, Thackeray exposes the emptiness and transience of material success. One of the central themes in "The Vanity Fair" is the pursuit of wealth and fame. Thackeray presents a scathing critique of a society that values status and fortune above all else. Characters like Sir Pitt Crawley and Jos Sedley epitomize the obsession with wealth, blindly chasing opportunities for financial gain at the expense of their personal relationships and happiness. Thackeray warns against the dangers of such single-minded pursuit, highlighting the moral bankruptcy and soullessness that often accompanies material success.Through the character of Amelia Sedley, Thackeray explores the concept of unrequited love and the sacrifices one is willing to make for the object oftheir affection. Amelia's unwavering devotion to George Osborne, despite his indifference and betrayal, raises questions about the nature of love and the illusions it can create. Thackeray reminds us that love is not always reciprocated or deserving of our devotion, and that true happiness lies in self-respect and the pursuit of personal growth.Furthermore, "The Vanity Fair" serves as a social commentary on the hypocrisies and injustices prevalent within society. Thackeray exposes the corrosive effects of greed, deceit, and manipulation, which permeate the interactions between characters. He highlights the stark contrast between appearances and reality, illustrating how individuals often conceal their true selves behind a mask of politeness and respectability. Thackeray's critique of the upper classes serves as a reminder that wealth and prestige do not guarantee moral integrity or happiness. In today's society, the themes and critiques presented in "The Vanity Fair" remain relevant and applicable. The relentless pursuit of wealth and fame continues to dominate our culture, often leading to personal unhappiness and societal inequality. The novel's exploration of love and its complexities resonates with the experiences of individuals navigating relationships in a modern world driven by superficiality and self-interest. Thackeray's call for authenticity and moral responsibility serves as a timely reminder for us to question our own values and priorities. In conclusion, "The Vanity Fair" offers a profound and thought-provoking exploration of the human condition within the context of wealth and fame. Thackeray's vivid characters and astute observations of society create a compelling narrative that forces readers to reflect on their owndesires, aspirations, and moral compass. As we navigate the intricacies of the modern-day "vanity fair," it is crucial to heed the lessons embedded within this classic novel and strive for a more authentic and meaningful existence.。

vanity_fair名利场读后感英文版梗概

vanity_fair名利场读后感英文版梗概

Book report of Vanity FairVanity Fair: A Novel without a Hero is a novel by English author William Makepeace Thackeray. The reason that I made my decision to pick it from the library is my fancy on the movie Vanity Fair. It turned out that the novel is more interesting than the movie. The novel takes place during the Napoleonic Wars. The lives of two starkly contrasted girls: Becky Sharp, orphaned and poor but ingenious, and Amelia Sedley, sheltered daughter of a rich city merchant. They two meet at Miss Pinkerton’s Academy for young ladies, the former driven by social ambition, while the latter by her delicate heart. And it satirizes the society in early 19th-century Britain. The book gives me a entire view of the life which is pretty extravagant. It tells us that Becky is a beautiful, strong-willed and cunning young woman who is determined to make her way to the upper society. She makes every possible effort by hooking or by crooking to get rid of poverty. And she failed in the end. By contrast, Amelia Sedley is a good-natured, loveable though simple-minded young girl. She does not understand what life is. And she is portrayed by her husband and friend Becky. She is such a coward that she does not run counter to her fate and always accept the reality quite contently as it is. She is so pitiful and conventional. Yet God blesses her, she comes across a perfect man Dobbin and gets married to him at last. When I see the title of this novel "Vanity Fair", I was wondering what is the meaning of it. And after I finished reading, I found that a vanity fair is a hypocritical, commercial and money-grabbing aristocratic society. Although the book was written in the 19th century, it still can reflect the reality nowadays. In our society, some people are unable to see things clearly. They are confused because their minds are full of wealth, power, vanity and so on. And they become slaves of vanity eventually. Thackeray had drawn a lifelike scene of the reality in the novel, which is the reason why the novel has been popular for so many years. Since vanity fair is a trap that everyone is likely to step into, we had better be careful when we are pursuing something. Meanwhile, when I was reading the book, I could not help asking myself that what kind of person I am. The Becky or the Amelia? Fortunately, I am none of them. I think both Becky and Amelia are adorable. And I won’t be so conventional that tend to accept the reality as it is as Amelia because I have the intention to struggle for something better. I will bravely seek after the happiness like Becky, but never in her way because I think power and money is less important than friendship and some other staff. And a s far as I’m concerned, what we should pursue is anything valuable but the vanity.。

Reading Response to Vanity FairWilliam Makepeace Thackeray, the author of Vanity Fair, was a representative of critical realism in the 19th century. Vanity Fair enjoys a vital position in the English literature history. With lots of truth in detail, Thackeray drew a picture of the society in the firsthalf of 19th century. The subtitle of this novel is "A Novel Without a Hero".It is lack of a hero, but full of mental and chatacter description. It is said that this is not only a novel , this is a society in miniature. It is not just in the united kingdom at that time, it is also in today. In average novels, there are always heroes. But Vanity Fair boasts neither heroes nor decent figures. Conversely, all the characters have obvious shortcomings.Under Thackery's pen, Dobbin is stupid while Amelia selfish. The perfect person or near-perfect person don't belong to this work.In spite of Dobbin, every character is ugly.People who are mild, kind and clever end up sadly while the selfish, dull and malicious guys live a smooth life. From this point of view, we may ask: what is the value of success? Moreover, since success is momentary, the success ofthe nonenity can never leave a trace in the history. In the stage of Vanity Fair, honest citizens like Dobbin and Amilia suffer from adversity;the shrewd and sophisticated Becky Sharp getsbuckets of money unscrupulously, aiming to pretend to be a person of up-class.At the beginning, Becky Sharp doesn't desire to be a socialbutterfly, just wants to be the wife of Amelia's brother Joseph, having a place to settle down, eating mutton, and drinking good wine . She doesn't have any relatives. A life of middle class will satisfy her.She never falls in love with any men she dates with .Becky craves for money and status all through her life, but fails. She will not gain happiness even if she realized her dream. She used to be a clever and beautiful girl. After being attracted by fame and benefit, she is trapped. Since then she becomes hypocrisy and greedy. She covers her furtive abuse with beautiful, touching and kind words. She could damagingly hurt someone nonchalantly.Behind the mask of "kindness", there is despicableobjective for which she trades her friendship, love, marriage, friendsand even husband. In order to make the way into the "Kingdom of the noble", she puzzles the poor while tarnishing herself. From the beginning to the end, Amelia never give up her dream of marrying the hero she respects. And she finally makes it. However,if a woman can not capture the man's heart, then the marriage is a failure. Her fondness turns out to be one-way. Talking about love, only the man Dobbin is somebody. As the character who impresses me most, Dobbin find his love meaningless after sensing that Amelia is a woman of superficiality and dullness. Dobbin's love for Amelia is remarkable due to its indirectness. He cares little about Becky's hard performance in the Vanity Fair and jeers at her hypocrisy. When Amelia and all the other people praises Becky, he just murmurs" Look at this woman!" When Becky shows her loveto him, his loyalty and love for Amelia is testified to be unshakable. He is the cleverest and clearest man in this novel as well as in our world of the moment.Fame and benefit are purchasable, but they are not the whole of life. If one keep seeking them relentlessly, in return, they will grow into temptation which deteriorate his mind and soul. Without innocence, one will lose himself in greed and hypocrisy.Vanity Fair, a true mirror of life, is the place in which everyone struggles for, dreams for and seeks for nothingness.Nothing can be brought away after one's death. But in this fair, men, drunken and sleepy, still chase with all their force.Vanity Fair is not a woeful tragedy, but a ruthless irony of life.Isn't there a Becky Sharp in every girl's mind.Vanity Fair, a novel without a hero, reaches its exceptional truthby reversing ideal thought of "good people will eventually be rewarded".I like it because it's real.。

Reading the novel "Nameli Chang" by Li Ao, I found it to be a captivating story of ambition, adversity and greed. The main character, Gaokela, is a young man who rises from poverty to become a successful businessman in an age of great economic change. He faces numerous challenges ranging from unethical business practices and risky investments to a turbulent love life. Throughout the novel, Gaokela learns invaluable lessons about how to succeed in life without compromising his integrity.I was particularly moved by one of the subplots of the novel, which involves the touching friendship between two of Gaokela's employees, Bai Mu and Zhen Zhen. Despite their differences in character, these two characters develop a bond of mutual understanding and support that is an example of true friendship and loyalty. The novel also brings up very pertinent issues facing society today, such as social responsibility, corporate corruption and environmental destruction. Through the narrative of Gaokela's personal journey and the subplots of his friends and enemies, Li Ao leaves readers with important lessons about how we should live our lives in this modern world.Overall, I thought "Nameli Chang" was an enjoyable, thought-provoking read. It touched upon various ethical, moral and philosophical topics and presented them through an intriguing narrative. The characters were engaging and the setting was rich with details.

As I read through the pages of "The Vanity Fair," I couldn't help but be captivated by the intricate web of ambition, greed, and social climbing that Thackeray weaves throughout the novel. The story follows the lives of Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley as they navigate the treacherous waters of high society in 19th century England, and the novel's exploration of the pursuit of wealth and status left me with a myriad of thoughts and feelings. One of the most striking aspects of the novel is its portrayal of the relentless pursuit of fame and fortune. Throughout the story, we see characters like Becky Sharp using their wit, charm, and cunning to climb the social ladder, often at the expense of others. Thackeray's unflinching portrayal of the lengths to which people will go in order to achieve their desires left me feeling a sense of unease and discomfort. It made me reflect on the darker side of human nature and the ways in which our ambitions can drive us to act in ways that are selfish anddestructive. At the same time, "The Vanity Fair" also offers a critique of the society in which these characters operate. Thackeray exposes the hypocrisy and shallowness of the upper classes, and the novel's portrayal of the emptiness of wealth and status left me with a sense of disillusionment. It made me question the value of material success and the ways in which it can lead people to lose sight of what is truly important in life.Despite the novel's often cynical view of human nature and society, there are moments of genuine emotion and tenderness that shine through. The relationship between Amelia and George Osborne, for example, is a poignant reminder of the power of love and the ways in which it can transcend the trappings of wealth and status. These moments of genuine emotion served as a counterbalance to thenovel's more cynical elements, and left me with a sense of hope and optimism. In conclusion, "The Vanity Fair" is a thought-provokingand complex novel that left me with a myriad of thoughts and feelings. Thackeray's exploration of ambition, greed, and social climbing offers a powerful critique of human nature and society, and the novel's moments of genuine emotion serve as a reminder of the power of love and compassion. It is a novel that has left a lasting impression on me, and one that I will continue to reflect on for years to come.。

As the manager of the Performance sits before the curtain on the boards and looks into the Fair, a feeling of profound melancholy comes over him in his survey of the bustling place. There is a great quantity of eating and drinking, making love and jilting, laughing and the contrary, smoking, cheating, fighting, dancing and fiddling; there are bullies pushing about, bucks ogling the women, knaves picking pockets, policemen on the look-out, quacks (OTHER quacks, plague take them!) bawling in front of their booths, and yokels looking up at the tinselled dancers and poor old rouged tumblers, while the light-fingered folk are operating upon their pockets behind. Yes, this is VANITY FAIR; not a moral place certainly; nor a merry one, though very noisy. Look at the faces of the actors and buffoons when they come off from their business; and Tom Fool washing the paint off his cheeks before he sits down to dinner with his wife and the little JackPuddings behind the canvas. The curtain will be up presently, and he will be turning over head and heels, and crying, "How are you?"A man with a reflective turn of mind, walking through an exhibition of this sort, will not be oppressed, I take it, by his own or other people's hilarity. An episode of humour or kindness touches and amuses him here and there--a pretty child looking at a gingerbread stall; a pretty girl blushing whilst her lover talks to her and chooses her fairing; poor Tom Fool, yonder behind the waggon, mumbling his bone with the honest family which lives by his tumbling; but the general impression is one more melancholy than mirthful. When you come home you sit down in a sober, contemplative, not uncharitable frame of mind, and apply yourself to your books or your business.I have no other moral than this to tag to the present story of "Vanity Fair." Some people consider Fairs immoral altogether, andeschew such, with their servants and families: very likely they are right. But persons who think otherwise, and are of a lazy, or a benevolent, or a sarcastic mood, may perhaps like to step in for half an hour, and look at the performances. There are scenes of all sorts; some dreadful combats, some grand and lofty horse-riding, some scenes of high life, and some of very middling indeed; some love-making for the sentimental, and some light comic business; the whole accompanied by appropriate scenery and brilliantly illuminated with the Author's own candles. What more has the Manager of the Performance to say?--To acknowledge the kindness with which it has been received in all the principal towns of England through which the Show has passed, and where it has been most favourably noticed by the respected conductors of the public Press, and by the Nobility and Gentry. He is proud to think that his Puppets have given satisfaction to the verybest company in this empire. The famous little Becky Puppet has been pronounced to be uncommonly flexible in the joints, and lively on the wire; the Amelia Doll, though it has had a smaller circle of admirers, has yet been carved and dressed with the greatest care by the artist; the Dobbin Figure, though apparently clumsy, yet dances in a very amusing and natural manner; the Little Boys' Dance has been liked by some; and please to remark the richly dressed figure of the Wicked Nobleman, on which no expense has been spared, and which Old Nick will fetch away at the end of this singular performance. And with this, and a profound bow to his patrons, the Manager retires, and the curtain rises.LONDON, June 28, 1848Every year, when winter descends on the country, one of Englishliterature’s great works always finds itself pulled down from my bookshelf: namely, William Thackeray’s immortal Vanity Fair. The reason is simple: no degree of chilliness in the air can extinguish the book’s incredible warmth and humour. It is a tonic.

The Brief Analysis of Rebecca Sharp and Amelia Sedley Vanity Fair is the most famous and marvelous work of Thackeray’s, which satirizes the downfallen upper class and utilitarian bourgeois upstarts in Britain. In this long novel, Thackeray depicts a comely young woman, Rebecca Sharp, who is smart enough to take advantage of her beauty to climb upward in the V anity Fair. To make a comparison with Rebecca Sharp, Thackeray also creates another pretty woman, Amelia Sedley, a friend of Sharp’s, who lives a totally different life. As these two women, especially Rebecca Sharp, are the most important characters in the novel, and they have different attitudes toward wealth and fame, so in my article, I’d like to make a brief analysis of the characters of Rebecca Sharp and Amelia Sedley.Rebecca Sharp is the daughter of a deceased drawer and a French dancer. Her parentage is rather poor. It is exactly the poor parentage that makes Rebecca Sharp go through many difficulties in her early age, and makes her decide to join the luxurious upper class so desperately that she is willing to do whatever she can. I have to admit that Rebecca Sharp is really smart and beautiful. Her beauty and keen mind is her capital in the venture of stepping into the upper class. Though she dose not have a prestigious pedigree, she still finds her own way of surviving and succeeding in the society where wealth and fame is highly adored. She makes it by proper utilization of her beauty, sharp observation of people’s mind, accurate words to flatter the noble, as well as wonderful techniques of asking and rejecting a certain demand. In order to step into a comparatively good family, Rebecca Sharp has to make compromise. So when she has heard that Joseph Sedley is single, she makes up her mind to seduce him, even though she has neither known him nor seen him. In her eyes, Joseph Sedley is just a ladder used to climb to an upper level. In this case, she dose not care much about how Joseph Sedley is, but what he is. In the case of aesthetic appreciation, Joseph Sedley is not as decent as Rebecca Sharp. He stammers, and likes to boast. But Rebecca endures his flaws and tries to cater to his topic. It is maybe the first time that Rebecca gets the chance to change her fate, and she is rather a green hand. She chooses Joseph Sedley without deliberation lest she may lose the opportunity. Given by nature, she is definitely good at using her beauty to capture a man. The victim surrenders at the first sight of Rebecca and soon gets captured thoroughly. The seduction is about to succeed, but unfortunately, another man, George Osborne, ruins it. Much as Rebecca, George Osborne is a lady-killer. He is so experienced that he knows clearly what Rebecca is thinking. So her first attempt to raise her social status has failed.Another scene can show that Rebecca has a very sensitive mind. When she has heard of the departure of Joseph Sedley, she immediately knows that it is George who urges him to leave. For only George has the ability to catch her thought, because of his abundant experiences of dealing with women. William Dobbin is so obsessed with Amelia Sedley, so he is unlikely to observe Rebecca so slightly.Mr. Sedley is just a merchant, relatively wealthy, but far less than highlyrespected. On one hand, Rebecca has failed to marry Joseph Sedley. On the other hand, she can not be confined to the Sedleys. She needs a better-off family to reach her satisfaction. So Rebecca takes a position as governess at Queen's Crawley. Before she goes to Quee n’s Crawley, Rebecca Sharp has attracted Sir Pitt Crawley so that she will have a more advantageous position Queen’s Crawley. She is more than a governess at Queen’s Crawley, and even the maid knows that she is likely to be the next Mrs. Crawley. Here is the evidence that Rebecca Sharp is not totally infatuated by wealth and fame. If she is, she should accept Sir Pitt’s proposal so that she can get heritage after Sir Pitt dies. For such girls like Rebecca, love can be discarded for wealth and fame, rather than reverse. So if she falls in love with someone, she really means that, even though she knows that her beloved may be disinherited due to the marriage. It is a genuine coup de foudre for both of Rebecca Sharp and Rawdon Crawley.Rebecca’s life is full of opportunities. At Queen’s Crawley, she encounters another person who can get her position raised, Rawdon’s rich aunt, who is flattered by everybody and sees clearly that Rebecca wants to flatter her. Hearing the first word of Rebecca, she says “Miss Sharp? Y ou are a little sharp. Mind not cut yourself. ”But she soon gives up and likes Rebecca very much, for Rebecca contrives to find out proper words to praise her, no matter when they are talking and what they are talking about. To such old ladies like her, beauty is not the sticking point to get appreciation. Rebecca Sharp is smart enough to see it, so shetimely changes her key emphasis in her daily work. She resort to speaking-rush, a technique used to quickly achieve something by flattering or irritating someone with proper words. Nobody feels easy to resist compliment, and Rawdon’s rich aunt is no exception. So she decides to take Rebecca to London.Rebecca knows she can never step into the upper class unless she leaves the countryside. So she instantaneously accepts the old lady’s invitation and moves to London. She is surely to be put into an important position in the house, but she secretly marries Rawdon Crawley, which infuriates old lady Crawley, for she does not want a governess to be a member of her family. It is the turning point for Rebecca Sharp. After the marriage, she must make a living by her own, not rely on someone. It is hard to say whether it is good for her or bad for her. Her life will be much more difficult, of which I am quite sure, but at the same time, she can join the upper class entitled Mrs. Crawley, not merely as the maidservant of the Crawleys. Every coin has two sides. The new couple loses their source of income, so they must find a way to make money to cover their expenditure of being people of quality. Based on her talent, Rebecca soon finds another prey, the Lord Steyne. As a member of British aristocracy, Lord Steyne has more privileges than Joseph Sedley and Sir Pitt Crawley. He is much more qualified than any other person as a deposit book and a ladder to the upper class. Her seduction goes smoothly until Rawdon finds they are not innocent. After that night, Rawdon is convinced that wealth and fame means more to her than him or her son whom she has always hated. He refuses to see her again and takes a post inCoventry Island, where he dies of yellow fever. Lord Steyne also loathes her. She finds nobody to rely on.The ending for Rebecca Sharp is tragic, but we like this ending. Finally Rebecca loses everything which she has contrived for lifetime, and completely loses the chance to enter the V anity Fair by relying on the noble. She is born poor, and her intention to get wealth and fame is put to an end with nothing. Frankly speaking, Rebecca has a sincere desire of amendment. But what we loathe is the method she resorts to. In the society where pedigree is highly emphasized, the poor little girl can never achieve her goal in a normal way. So the only way out is using her beauty, just like prostitutes using their bodies. It is her destiny that makes Rebecca fail, though she succeeds in ensnaring Joseph Sedley at last.Another main character in this long novel is Amelia Sedley, the best friend of Rebecca Sharp. She represents a totally different kind of people, who believes in love and is willing to sacrifice everything for pure love. But unfortunately, she goes to another extreme. In this novel, we can see, George Osborne is not faithful to Amelia Sedley. The reason why he marries her resolutely is that he disdains his father for the betrayal of Mr. Sedley. He uses money Dobbin gives him to buy Amelia a present to buy him a brooch, and even slips a note into Rebecca’s hand and urges her to elope. When she has heard of her husband’s unforgivable behavior, she still believes that George loves her. She is too innocent to reach those playboys hearts.Amelia’s adherence to the love between herself and George has gone too far this time and later been proved meaningless. Many years after George has died in Waterloo, Amelia still believes that he is faithful and refuses Dobbin for many times. Ironically, it is Rebecca who finally jolts Amelia into the recognition that George, her first love, is not worthy. She uses her own slatternly behavior to help Amelia quit living in the past. It maybe the only right thing Rebecca does in the novel.Amelia is kind, undoubtedly, but her kindness is not always come with good results. She has suffered a lot and makes Dobbin, the only good man in the novel, also suffer a lot. She prefers to love the photo of George rather than show any affection to Dobbin. She may live a happier and easier life if she timely gets over the grief and accepts Dobbin. She can not forget any man she has loved, while Rebecca can easily forget any man she used to love.By the way, Amelia’s life is better off at last, which indicates that the kind-hearted will receive good blessings.Vanity Fair is a great novel, and Thackeray is definitely good at composing his work in the parallel structure. By the comparison between Rebecca Sharp and Amelia Sedley, we can see the cruelty of the wealth-and-fame oriented society. And in order to reach the upper class and enjoy the luxurious life, different people resorts to different methods. How to distinguish flattering person like Rebecca and how to keep one’s personality is what we should learn from this novel.。

Reflection on Vanity Fair
William Makepeace Thackeray, the author of the book Vanity Fair, is one of the greatest critical realistic writers. His description of the general mood and human feelings of the society is sharp and penetrating. Vanity Fair has superb artistic accomplishment.
In this novel, the author described many different kinds of characters, but most of them were selfish and hypocritical. As the subtitle of Vanity Fair said ---- A Novel without a Hero, it was true. Vanity Fair had no big hero. It just related the tales of two main female characters in the 19th century in England, Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley, who had near relationship but the opposite characteristics. Amelia was born in a merchant family, who gained happiness ultimately. She was kindhearted, softhearted woman, but she looked weak and ignorant. After her husband died , she devoted herself to her son and her dear memory of her husband. Only when reading her husband’s letter to Sharp, she realized how foolish she was. And finally she found that Dobbin was just her Mr. Right.
Compared with Amelia, Becky has an angel’s appearance but an evil heart, which mostly attracts me. It is more close to real life, and reveals the social conditions at that time, which are worth thinking about.
Becky Sharp was the most beautiful and charming women. Her father was a frustrated painters and her mother was a French opera dancer who was dead when Becky was still young. Being an orphan without social position or noble family, Becky looked seductive but had a calculating mind. In order to step into the high levels of society, she made full use of her charm and tricks and became a vain and greedy liar. She was energetic and tried to control her own fate, with the belief that she was not inferior to the other.
Becky Sharp began her socially ambitious career due to the friendship with Amelia, who was softhearted and sentimental. Becky tried to marry Jos Sedley, Amelia’s brother, a foolish but rich man. While later on, she then began her love with the mean and greedy Sir Pitt Crawley, but made the mistakes of marrying his second son, Rawdon. Her marriage did not prevent her from pursuing her social ambition. She then became the mistress of Lord Steyne. Finally, Rawdon discovered Becky’s betrayal and then le ft her. Her ambitions were eventually defeated and she appeared to be respectable in the end.
The image of Sharp is neither idealized nor simplified. She is real and complicated, which can be seen everywhere. As an woman who struggled for a better living condition and for a higher state of the upper class, she is shrewd, selfish and pursues wealth and position by any means. But she is intelligent, energetic and has a keen sense of humor and a deep understanding of people. The author successfully presents a striking contrast between Sharp and Amelia. In my opinion, such writing techniques make the characters much more distinctive and attractive.
From the author’s skilled writing, I know more about the innate features and the human beings, particularly the bad and dark side. Maybe, everybody can find some shadows of himself on one of the characters in the novel. Every character in the novel is alive. Everybody has their own story, their own anxiety and happiness, which can timely arise the reader’s emotional resonance.。
