AAn incredible dog has mastered more than just the doggy paddle (狗刨式游泳) — the golden brown pet helps disabled children learn how to surf. Ricochet’s owner Judy Fridono said, ―I was working with her at balance and coordination (协作). Her balance is so good that she can help to stabilize the board for the kids. And it makes them feel good to know that Ricochet is there with them, keeping them company.‖After becoming an expert, two-year-old Ricochet helps the disabled children build up the confidence to get on the board themselves. Dressed in a yellow jacket, Ricochet helps to counter-balance the board and acts as a reassuring presence.Ms. Fridono knows what an impact her beloved dog can have. She herself was severely disabled since her teens. Having Ricochet around lifts her spirits, and inspires her to conquer her pain to get on the board. ―Rico chet has taught me to focus on what I can do, rather than what I can’t,‖ she said. One of those who have benefited from Ricochet’s skills is six-year-old Ian McFarland. In 2008 a car crash left him with brain damage. Although he had loved surfing before the accident, he was too nervous to go back into the water. His fear turned to excitement, when he was told he could try a tandem (双人) surf session with Ricochet. Their session was a success and by the end of it, Ian was smiling from ear to ear. As well as helping with treatments, Ricochet also raised £5,000 to help continue Ian’s recovery.Over the last 10 months, Ricochet’s excellen t performances on the sea have raised more than £30,000 for a number of charity causes.1. According to the passage, Ricochet is .A. a doctorB. a dogC. a dog ownerD. a disabled boy2. What role does Ricochet play according to the passage?A. She acts as a pet to please its owner.B. She accompanies the disabled children at home.C. She helps the disabled children learn to surf.D. She works as a guide dog for the blind.3. Ricochet helps youngsters build up their confidence.C. Ricochet helps youngsters in their daily life.D. Ricochet is a lifesaver on the sea.BNever before in Chinese history has a documentary film aroused so much public enthusiasm. Everybody is talking about a new 7-part documentary called A Bite of China which was recently broadcast late at night on CCTV I. The documentary describes various gourmet items across the vast Chinese culinary (烹饪) landscape.According to Taobao, China’s biggest online retail website, just five days after the series began to air, nearly 6 million people went to the site in search of various local specialities, particularlythose mentioned in the documentary. More than 7.2 million deals were concluded. A ham producer from Yunnan Province saw his sales grow 17-fold in five days.Ho wever, one can’t help but believe that the documentary’s popularity is probably linked to the endless stream of terrible food security issues that have emerged in recent years. In one well-received article, a netizen wrote, ―I wonder how many felt so empty-hearted and sighed after watching the film .Formaldehyde(甲醛) sprayed cabbage, Sudan Red colored salty eggs, restaurants using gutter oil. The list is long…‖A varied and ancient food culture that is famous world-wide and which should have made the Chines e proud ends like this: one can only sigh. Food is the most vital thing in people’s lives. Yet China’s food industry is a typical description of ―bad money driving out the good‖. The market is huge while the cost of faking and cheating is so low for unscrupulous (不道德的) businessmen; and the punishment is too light. Take the milk industry as an example. Although Sanlu, the company that sold the melamine-adulterated milk powder, was punished, thousands of other dairies didn’t work hard to improve the quality. In order to allow national brands to survive, Chinese authorities are happy to loosen their regulations. As the documentary shows, people are attracted not to gourmet items like matsutake, a species of rare mushroom grown naturally in remote forests, but to common Chinese dishes like barley, lotus root or tofu. They are what meet our basic needs. This explains why people are so excited about A Bite of China---it is a reminder that there is still a world out there where food is excellent and people have dignity.5. The underlined word ―gourmet items‖ probably means________.A. beautiful clothesB. latest technologyC. delicious foodD. great inventions6. The second paragraph mainly talks about______.A. the producer of the documentB. the content of the documentC. the history of Chinese gourmetD. The popularity of the document7. We can infer from what a netizen wrote in one well –received article that ______.A. none of the television viewers have a knowledge of the Chinese food cultureB. there is a huge contrast between the ancient food culture and the realityC. the price of food is too high for many common peopleD. the documentary was made by a world-famous Chinese director8. According to the passage, China’s food industry is full of faking and cheating because_____.A. there are still so many poor people at the present timeB. the punishment for unscrupulous businessmen isn’t serious enoughC. the Chinese government encourages it to do soD. the food technology is not so advanced as in developed countriesCFor a while, my neighborhood was taken over by an army of joggers(慢跑者). They were there all the time: early morning, noon, and evening. There were little old ladies in gray sweats, young couples in Adidas shoes, middle-aged men with red faces. ―Come on!‖ My friend Alex encouraged me to join him as he jogged by my house every evening. ―You’ll feel great.‖Well, I had nothing against feeling great and if Alex could jog every day, anyone could. So I took up jogging seriously and gave it a good two months of my life, and not a day more. Based on my experience, jogging is the most overvalued form of exercise around, and judging from the number of the people who left our neighb orhood jogging army, I’m not alone in my opinion.First of all, jogging is very hard on the body. Your legs and feet take a real pounding(重击)running down a road for two or three miles. I developed foot, leg, and back problems. Then I read about a nationally famous jogger who died of a heart attack while jogging, and I had something elseto worry about. Jogging doesn’t kill hundreds of people, but if you have any physical weaknesses, jogging will surely bring them out, as they did with me.Secondly, I got no enjoyment out of jogging. Putting one foot in front of the other for forty-five minutes isn’t my idea of fun. Jogging is also a lonely pastime. Some joggers say, ―I love being out there with just my thoughts.‖ Well, my thoughts began to bore me, and most of them were on how much my legs hurt. And how could I enjoy something that brought me pain? And that wasn’t just the first week;it was practically every day for two months. I never got past the pain level, and pain isn’t fun. What a cruel way to do it! So many other exercises, including walking, lead to almost the same results painlessly, so why jog?I don’t jog any more, and I don’t think I ever will. I’m walking two miles three times a week at a fast pace, and that feels good. I bicycle to w ork when the weather is good. I’m getting exercise, and I’m enjoying it at the same time. I could never say the same for jogging, and I’ve found a lot of better ways to stay in shape.9. The underlined word ―them‖(Paragraph 3) most probably refers to _____.A. heart attacksB. back problemsC. famous joggersD. physical weaknesses10. What was the writer’s attitude towards jogging in the beginning?A. He felt it was worth a try.B. He was very fond of it.C. He was strongly against it.D. He thought it must be painful.11. Why did the writer give up jogging two months later?A. He disliked doing exercise outside.B. He found it neither healthy nor interesting.C. He was afraid of having a heart attack.D. He was worried about being left alone.12. From the writer’s experience, we can conclude that______.A. not everyone enjoys joggingB. he is the only person who hates joggingC. nothing other than jogging can help people keep fitD. jogging makes people feel greater than any other sportDHave you got a Facebook account? Are you thinking of getting one? Jamie Simmonds has just signed up. Let’s see how she’s getting along. As from June 2012, Facebook had over 955 million active users. The average Facebook user has 130 friends. Facebook is translated into more than 70 different languages. The world spends 700 billion minutes a month on Facebook. Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook page says he’s a Harvard graduate, even though he actually dropped out to focus on Facebook. The site is valued at between $7.9 and $11 billion.13. There have been more than 100 million references to the word "tuhao" on social media since early September. It's being used to describe everything from the new People's Daily building, to expensive celebrity weddings full of bling, and the new gold-coloured iPhone. In Chinese "tu" means earth and "hao" means rich. To say someone is tuhao is to imply they come from a poor peasant background, and have made it rich quick —but don't quite have the manners, or sophistication to go along with it. It's like the term "nouveau riche", says Professor Steve Tsang at the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies in Nottingham - but has even more negative meanings, suggesting a certain vulgarity(粗俗)."Tuhao" is actually an old word, dating back perhaps as far as the Southern Dynasty 1,500 years ago,but it has always meant something rather different. During the communist revolution, from the 1920s to early 1950s, it was widely used to refer to landholders and gentry who would bully those beneath them. This new usage of the term took off in September after a widely-shared joke about a rich, but unhappy man, who goes to a Buddhist monk for advice, expecting to be told to live a more simple life. The monk replies instead with the phrase: "Tuhao, let's be friends!"Chinese Internet users are highly creative in their use of language, and are constantly inventing, and re-inventing words as a way of getting past censorship(审查) rules. But in this case, its popularity seems to be down to the fact that it expresses China's changing society so well —many people sneer at those with wealth, but are secretly jealous.4. What is the best title of the passage?A. Tuhao, a new popular word in ChinaB. The long history of TuhaoC. The new usage of TuhaoD. Tuhao, a newly-invented Chinese word5. Which of the following may NOT be considered “tuhao”?A. A vulgar nouveau richeB. A bully landholderC. A quick-rich peasant without proper mannersD. A Buddhist monk.6. The last but one paragraph mainly tells us ______.A. what the new usage of the word isB. how the word becomes popular againC. why the unhappy man went to the Buddhist monkD. what advice the monk gave the unhappy man7. What does the underlined word in the last paragraph mean?A. respectB. envyC. laughD. disbelieveCEdward Wilson is America’s, if not the world’s, leading naturalist. In The Future of Life, he takes us on a tour of the world’s natural resources. How are they used? What has been lost? What remains and is it able to continue with the present speed of use? Wilson also points out the need to understand fully the biodiversity (生物多样性) of our earth.Wilson begins with an open letter to the pioneer in environment protection Henry David Thoreau. He compares to day’s Walden Pond with that of Thoreau’s day. Wilson will use such comparisons for the rest of the book. The problem is clean: man has done great damage to his home over the years. Can the earth, with human help, be made to return to biodiversity levels that will be able to support us in the future?Biodiversity, Wilson argues, is the key to settling many problems the earth faces today. Even our agricultural crops can gain advantages from it. A mere hundred species are the basis of our food supply, of which but twenty carry the load. Wilson suggests changing this situation by looking into ten thousand species that could be made use of, which will be a way to reduce the clearing of the natural homes of plants and animals to enlarge farming areas. At the end of the book, Wilson discusses the importance of human values in considering the environment. If you are to continue to live on the earth, you may well read and act on the ideas.8. How many species are most important to our present food supply?A. Twenty.B. EightyC. One hundred.D. Ten thousand.9. Wilson suggests that one way to keep biodiversity is to .A. learn how to farm scientificallyB. build homes for some dying speciesC. make it clear what to eatD. use more species for food10. We can infer that the text is .A. a description of natural resourcesB. a research reportC. a book reviewD. an introduction to a scientist第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AAre you a neat person or a messy(杂乱的)person? Is your desk neat or messy? Bill Brown is inte rested in studying people’s desks, or “work spaces”, as he calls them. A person’s work space tells you about how he or she organizes work.Brown says both neat and messy people consider two things in organizing their work space: finding and reminding. Finding means being able to get messages and papers at the time you need them. Reminding means telling you to do things at a certain(某个)time. Brown has noticed that people put things in different places by looking at how important they are and when they will be needed.Someone asked Brown if it is better to be neat or messy. He said, “Messy people have more problems finding things, but neat people have to spend time keeping their work space neat.”Brown uses these ideas about workspaces to help him work out how computers should be built. As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied: “Things aren’t always what they seem.”The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor but very hospitable (好客的) farmer. After sharing what little food they had, the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night’s rest. When the sun came up the next morning, the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their only income, lay dead in the field. The younger angel was very angry and asked the older angel, “How could this happen?” “Why didn’t you watch out for the cow? The day is beautiful and the plans for the day are what you have been looking forward to for a long time. Then the telephone rings, you say hello, and the drama starts. The person at the other end has a depressing(令人沮丧的)tone in his voice as he starts to tell you how terrible his morning is and that there is nothing to look forward to. Are you still in a wonderful mood? Impossible!Communicating with negative people can wash out your happiness. It may not change what you think, but communicating long enough with them will make you feel depressed for a moment or a long time.Life brings ups and downs, but some people are stuck in the wrong idea that life has no happiness to offer. They only feel glad when they make others feel bad. No wonder they can har dly win others’ pity or respect. When you communicate with positive people, your spirit stays happy and therefore more positive things are attracted.
