AMichelle was a student at University of California, Los Angeles. She is here to tell us how she feels about the city. What were the best things about Los Angeles? One of my favorite things about Los Angeles is the weather. I hate the cold and it never really gets that cold there. Plus, most of the time it’s usually sunny, which is good because I love going to the beach during the summer. There’s so much to do at the beach, but my favorite thing in L.A. was having a picnic on the sand with my friends. What were the worst things about being there?I disliked having to drive everywhere to get around because the city is so spread out. Los Angeles has a lot of traffic and sometimes it takes a long time to get somewhere close by just because the streets are so crowded. Also, a lot of people complain about the pollution.Did you have any problems there?Just the normal problems of living in any city, like watching out for pickpockets (扒手). Some people think Los Angeles has a lot of crime, but I think it’s as safe as any other city. Also, many people think driving is difficult because there is a lot of traffic and road rage (路怒症), but it just takes a little practice and a lot of patience. What are the people like in Los Angeles? There are all types of people in Los Angeles since the city is pretty diverse. For the most part, though, most of the people are friendly, calm and relaxed. Some people say that everyone in Los Angeles is beautiful, but I think that’s just a stereotype (模式化的印象).Would you go back to Los Angeles?Certainly. Los Angeles is one of my favorite cities in the world. I love the fact that it has all the nightlife and shopping of a big city, but also has access to beaches, parks, mountains and other places you can’t usually find in large cities. Between the weather and the beaches and all the fun things to do, it’s a great place to be.21. Scientists from Britain and Poland took cells from his nose, transplanted (移植) them into his back and re-grew his spinal cord (脊髓). Now he can walk and even drive a car. The doctors were delighted but said it was the first step in a long journey. The breakthrough came after 40 years of research by Professor Geoff Raisman, who found that cells had the possibility to repair damage to nasal (鼻腔的) nerves, the only part of the nervous system that constantly (不断地) re-grows. “The idea was to take something from an area where the nervous system can repair itself, and does so throughout life, and put it into an area that doesn’t repair itself,” Professor Raisman said.Polish doctors injected the nasal cells into Mr Fidyka’s spinal cord above and below the injury and used some nerves from his ankle to form a bridge across the damaged tissue. The nasal cells appear to have caused the spinal nerves to repair themselves.Professor Raisman achieved this with rats in the late 1990s, but this is his greatest success. “I think the moment of discovery for me was Christmas in 1997 when I first saw a rat that couldn’t control its hand put its hand out to me. That was an exciting moment, because I realised then that my belief that the nervous system could be repaired was true.”Doctors chose the easiest case for their first attempt — it might not work for others. But there is a real sense of hope that an idea once thought impossible has been realised.David Nicholls, who helped provide money for the breakthrough, said information about the breakthrough would be made available to researchers across the globe.“What you’ve got to understand is that for t hree million paralysed people in the world today, the world looks a totally brighter place than it did yesterday,” he said.28. Why did Professor Geoff Raisman choose cells from the nose?A. The nervous system in the nose can repair itself.B. Cells in the nose can be easily transplanted.C. Cells in the nose re-produce rapidly.D. He just wanted to give it a try.29. Why did the operation work for Darek Fidyka?A. The nasal cells re-produced and spread quickly.B. The nerves from his ankle helped cure the injury.C. The nervous system in the spinal cord can repair itself.D. The nasal cells helped the spinal nerves to repair themselves.30. What made Professor Geoff Raisman believe the nervous system can be repaired?A. His study on animals.B. His operation on a paralysed patient.C. His sudden thoughts about Christmas.D. His unusual experience with a sick rat.31. David Nicholls’ words suggest that _____.A. the world is becoming better and brighterB. paralysed people have the hope of recoveryC. the report of the breakthrough will be published soonD. researchers across the globe will carry out the operationDThe Regional Director of the National Heritage Conservation Commission (国家遗产保护委员会) Kagosi Mwamulowe said the Barotse Plains is unique (独特的) and it deserves to be on the list of the World Heritage Sites.Mr. Mwamulowe said the Barotse Plains deserves to be included on the World Heritage List because it has a rich cultural heritage which includes the burial sites of former (以前的) kings. The Director said he hoped that the landscape would be declared as a heritage site next year in June. He also said it was important to protect Zambia’s unique culture for education and entertainment.Chief Natural Heritage Officer Muyumbwa Ndiyoi said there will be a lot of benefits when the Barotse Landscape is declared a World Heritage Site because it will attract many tourists and business investments will increase.Mr. Ndiyoi said the site will also benefit young people as knowledge will be passed down from generation to generation. He was reacting to a question from Nalolo District Labour Officer Jason Ngoma who wanted to know how the people of Western Province will benefit once the Barotse Landscape is declared a World Heritage Site. And University of Zambia Lecturer Charles Namate said there is a need for the site to be included on the World Heritage List because 50 years after its independence Zambia only has one heritage site, which is the Victoria Falls.Lecturer Namate said the Barotse Landscape was facing a lot of environmental degradation (恶化), and that’s why there is a need to recognize the value of its landscape and the memories of dead kings. The National Heritage Conservation Commission together with the Ministry of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs are in Western Province to hold meetings with Heads of Government Departments. The Commission also held closed-door meetings with the Litunga Lubosi Imwiko II of the Barotse Royal Establishment.32. What do we know about the Barotse Plains?A. It has royal tombs.B. It is being well protected.C. It is not far from the Victoria Falls.D. It’ll be listed as a World Heritage Site soon.33. It may lead to the uncovering of chariot pit groups that could be a key to understanding Chinese civilizations that existed more than 2,000 years ago.Experts said the relics are dated more than 300 years earlier than the famous warriors(武士)in Shaanxi Province. What excited the experts were two other projects that located two huge pits with similar features.“It is absolutely a miracle. These relics indicate that there could be a tomb group in this area, which is likely to be important for China’s archaeological(考古学的)studies,”said Ma Juncai, a leading relic researcher in the province. In ancient China, carts, sheep, spoons and so on were buried to ensure that dead people had a happy afterlife. The number and quality of the sacrifices indicated the social status of the dead. The custom was carried into the Qin Dynasty. Emperor Qinshihuang’s tomb, located near Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi Province, is accompanied by thousands of wood or clay figures of warriors and horses. The tomb is probably the most well-known.The discovered pit measures 10.4 meters long, 8.4 meters wide and 5 meters deep. It holds 20 carts in different sizes. The smallest one is 1.05 meters long and 1.3 meters wide.Experts think that 40 horses are likely to be found as well. Careful plans need to be made to deal with the demanding uncovering. “The clay is very weak and a small misstep can destroy the whole project. Th at’s why we need to take every step veryjingetiejicarefully to protect these cherished cultural relics,” Ma said.36. What’s the passage mainly about?A. The dead people’s sacrifices in ancient China.B. China’s archaeological studies.C. The discovery of a large chariot pit in Henan.D. The history of Chinese civilizations.37. According to Ma Juncai, the uncovering of thethree pits is a miracle because ______.A. it shows there may be a tomb group thereB. it’s helpful in discovering EmperorQinshihuang’s tombC. the relics are dated such a long time agoD. the relics are more than 300 years older thanthe ones in Shaanxi38. It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that ______.A. all dead people had sacrifices in ancient ChinaB. the discovered pit is the most well-known inthe worldC. the discovered pit dates back to the QinDynastyD. Emperor Qinshihuang wanted to maintain hispower after death39. Careful plans for the uncovering are neededbecause ______.A. another 40 horses are likely to be found as wellB. the whole uncovering could be destroyed easilyC. experts are too busy to spare time for itD. the government hasn’t agreed to itBAmong the seven wonders of the ancient architectural(建筑方面的)world, the pyramids in Egypt are the only ones still standing. For 1,000 years, they were the tallest buildings in the world. Built with prehistoric technology, they were an architectural mystery, as strange as the Sphinx(狮身人面像).No one really knows how they were built. The first historical record, by the Greek writer Heroditus, came 2,000 years later. Without hard facts, there have been many theories.Hollywood has mostly followed the examples from the Greek record: 100,000 slaves worked hard for 20 years. Others believe a very large slope snaked around the pyramids. An American recently put forward the theory that kites could have lifted the 2-ton stones. Now Houdin, a French architect, says that after studying the pyramids for eight years, he has solved the mystery with the help of 3-D computer animation (三维动画). He believes the pyramids were built from the inside out through an internal slope that goes aro und a central point. “This is completely new. Everyone before me thought that the pyramids were built from the outside, and only from the outside,” he said.Scholars of ancient Egypt are interested. “It’s a theory which sounds reasonable. Scholars of ancient Egypt agree it ought to be tested, and it doesn’t cause damage, so I wouldn’t be surprised that within a year, we have the final answer,” said Bob Brier, a scholar at Long Island University. If that is the case, we’ll know the truth about the pyramids in the blink of an eye, considering this mystery has lasted for nearly 5,000 years.40. According to the passage, how many ancientwonders in architecture have disappeared so far?A. Four.B. Five.C. Six.D. Seven.41. The Taj is the most beautiful monument built by the Mughals, the Muslim rulers of India. The Taj Mahal is built entirely of white marble. Its charming architectural beauty is beyond adequate description, particularly at dawn and sunset. The Taj seems to glow in the light of the full moon. On a foggy morning, the Taj looks as if suspended when viewed from across the Jamuna river. The Taj Mahal was built in memory of queen Mumtaz Mahal, Shah Jahan’s wife, at Agra, India. It is a mausoleum(陵墓)that houses the grave of queen Mumtaz Mahal in the lower chamber(墓室). The grave of Shah Jahan was added to it later. The queen’s real name was Arjumand Banu. In the tradition of the Mughals, important ladies of the royal family were given another name at their marriage or at some other significant events in their lives, and that new name was Shahab-ud-din, and he was known as Prince Khurram before he became the king in 1628.The Taj Mahal was constructed over a period of twenty-two years, employing twenty thousand workers. It was completed in 1653 at a cost of 32,000,000 rupees. The construction documents show that its master architect was Ustad Isa, the most famous Islamic architect of his time. The documents contain the names of those employed and the list of construction materials and their origin.44. What is the Taj Mahal most famous for?A. Location.B. Sunset and moonlight.C. Function.D. Shah Jahan was the prince when they began tobuild the Taj MahalDNo one can believe that the over 6,300-kilometer Great Wall might disappear some day. Believe it or not, the Great Wall is being destroyed by people. Less than 20 percent of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty, is still perfect, but about 80 percent is in danger. The Great Wall can be called “grea t” mostly because of its amazing length. But we should realise that the length was made up of one brick at a time. If we do nothing to save the Great Wall, it will become a series of separate wasteland rather than a historic site. The Great Wall is actually a series of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties over the past 2,000 years. It began in the rule of China’s first emperor, Qin Shihuang of the Qin Dynasty (221BC—206BC), and lasted into the Ming Dynasty. The parts built before the Ming Dynasty have nearly disappeared. People are familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing and Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu, because they have been open to tourists for many years. But those sections far away from the public eyes have been almost forgotten.Few local people knew the 3-meter-high walls made of earth and stones beside them are part of the Great Wall. The lack of knowledge is considered as one of the main reasons behind human. The bricks on the Great Wall are carried off by countryside people to build their houses, sheep corrals and pigsties. Some were taken away to build roads. Bricks carved with people’s names are put away as remembrances. Rubbish is spread over the battlements. The brick can be sold for 15 yuan per tractor load. Those who destroyed and are destroying the Wall know its name, but are not clear about its cultural meaning. It will take a long time to let them know this. The local farmers not only carried off the body of the Wall but also dug out the entire base.It is necessary to protect the Great Wall. First of all, the officials should be aware of the importance of the Great Wall. Young Chinese should know more about the nation’s great civilization and learn to l ovejingetiejiit.48. Why does the writer say the Great Wall mightdisappear?A. It is useless from now on.B. It is too old to be used again.C. It will be replaced by a new one.D. Some parts of it are being destroyed.49. Why do some people have many friends while others do not? __1__ However, it is not so. Let's look at two psychological experiments which will give you the key to happy interpersonal relations. The fi rst experiment is called the “Hawthorne effect” after Hawthorne, Illinois, where the experiment took place. A group of psychologists examined the work patterns of two groups of workers in the Western Electric Company. __2__.The psychologists changed the working conditions for one group twice but left the other group alone. They were surprised to find that productivity increase on both occasions and in both groups. They concluded that the increase in productivity came from the attention given to the workers by the management. It had increased their motivation (积极性) and so they had worked harder. In other words, if you take an interest in others ,they will want to please you and you will have good relations with them.__3__ After Martin Luther King, Jr was killed in the 1960s, a teacher, Jane Elliott, living in an all-white town decided to help her class of young children understand why the Civil Rights Movement had been necessary in America. She divided the class into two groups: one with blue eyes and the other with brown eyes. Other eye colours such as hazel or green were excluded from his exercise. Then she told the class that brown-eyed people were cleverer than blue-eyed ones because of an agent (化学作用) for brown colour found in their blood. Blue-eyed people were stupid, lazy and not to be trusted. Jane Elliott did not need to say any more. The brown-eyed students quickly got used to their new role as the leaders of the class. The blue-eyed students became quiet and withdrawn. Then she discovered something very interesting. Four poor brown-eyed readers began to read fluently in a way they had never done before. __4__.So if you want to be successful and happy, take an interest in others whether they are your classmates or workmates. Congratulate them on their successes and sympathize(同情) with them in their troubles. __5__.A.Before the experiment the management talked to both groups of workers and explained that they wanted to find the best working environment for them.B.Remember that the way you treat others will decide their attitude and behaviour to you.C.The second experiment shows what happens to personal relations if you are rude to or ignore(忽略) others.D.The ones who have more friends usually are those who care about others.E.Jane Elliott had shown that the way people are treated affects not only their behaviour but also their confidence and their performance.F.You may even imagine that this ability was something they were born with because it seems so effortless to them.G.The second experiment tells us what teachers said has a great effect on the students.答案:1-5FACEBⅡ.阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。

Do Dogs Understand Us?Be careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you think.A border collie named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee(黑猩猩).In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words. In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before. The correct object was chosen in seven out of l0 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked outthe answer by process of elimination(排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive.Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed (品种)known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months. It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if they do, they can't talk back. Still, it wouldn't hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return!1.What do we know from paragraph 2 ? (No more than 15 words)________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ 2.Please explain the underlined “is supposed to” in English. ( No more than 5 words)________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ 3.How has Rico got a good memory except being a special sort according to the text ?( No more than 15 words)________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ 4.What does the writer advise us to do by saying “it wouldn't hurt to sweet-talk…” ? (No more than 10 words)________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ 5.Which statement in the passage probably inspires you to like the dog Rico and why? (The reason should be answered within 20 words)________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ 答案:1.The dog, Rico, has very good word-learning skills.2.should/ is thought to /is expected to3.It has been trained to fetch toys by their names since its early age.4.Be friendly to your dog.5.“A border collie name Rico recognize the names of about 200 objects.” really inspires me. Because the dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child.Or because the dog can easily be a friend to humans and be used to help humans in many ways.Ⅲ.根据对话内容,从对话后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
