She was the longest serving British Prime Minister since 1827. She was the leader of the country from 1979 to 1990. Her conservative politics led to the implementation of such policies as the poll tax. The Falkland Islands war was fought while she was Prime Minister. Her introduction of Poll Tax caused a riot. When her party leadership was challenged in 1990, she resigned, later also retiring from the House of Commons.

A girl from the countryside who dressed as a man and went to fight for the French and to drive the English out of France. She was caught and put to death by the English.
Empress Wu Zetian in Tang Dynasty
A Chinese poet and a revolutionary was born in 1875 into a moderately wealthy family. Her family insisted that she receive good education and she was able to socialize with other well-educated people. In 1903 She went to study in Japan where she was vocal in her support for women’s rights and pressed for improved access to education for women. To provide female role models, she wrote articles about historical Chinese women. She was acknowleged immediately as heroine and a martyr who died fighting enemies of the Chinese people and she became a symbol of women’s independence.

She developed the science of radioactivity. She is best know for discovering the only person to win two Nobel prizes. She did not paten her discovers but made them available to everyone. She encouraged the use of X-rays for medical treatment. But she was not sufficiently aware of the dangers of radium and died of leukemia brought on by too much contact with radium.

Mother Teresa
She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1948. Through it, she has dedicated her life to helping the poor, the sick and the dying around the world, particular those in India. She founded the Kalighat Home for the Dying and a leper colony was established under her guidance. Her selfless work has brought her many awards, including Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

Soong Chingling (1893-1981), China
A doctor who became a specialist in women’s illnesses. She devoted all her lift to medical work for Chinese women and children. Her work encouraged many other women to become doctors.

Marie Sklodowska Curie
Florence Nightingale
She is the daughter of a wealthy British landowner, William Nightingale. She wanted to become a nurse but it was not considered a proper profession for a young lady at that time. In 1851 her father gave her permission to train as a nurse and in 1853 she went to the Crimea to help the soldiers during the war. There she became known as “ the lady with the lamp” for the concern she showed to the sick soldiers. Back in England, she started working to improve the training and status of nurses. She is considered a pioneer of nursing care.
Joan of Arc (1412-1432), France
As a young girl, she always wanted to study animals. She went to Africa and studied chimps. Her research showed the connections between chimps and human beings. She works to protect chimps everywhere.
She was the ambitious last ruler of the Macedonian Dynasty of Ancient Egypt. In her struggles to win the crown and keep her country free, she sought the support of Julius Caesar, bearing him a son. For a time she lived in Rome. A lesser known fact is that Cleopatra was highly educated and possessed an impressive intellect, being a student of philosophy and international relations.
