What does being poor mean to you

What does being poor mean to you

What does being poor mean to you?A family or person is considered to be poor based on the standards by the country that he lives in. A man might think of himself as poor if he is without the things he feels he needs to survive. A person who continuously doesn’t have food to eat or is homeless would be someone others would view as being poor. Someone could be observed as a poor person if he smells bad or has bad hygiene. As far as I’m concerned, these all are material poverty. Material poverty is terrible while the spiritual poverty is the worst.Material poverty is a horror. But as long as you are highly motivated, hardworking and dedication to study and ask questions, you can get rich. Above all, those who suit their actions to the times are wise. It is sagacious to be smooth and slick in establishing social relations. That means material poverty can be avoided. However, those who are poor materially always idle about and eat their own flesh. They not only live in material poverty but also live in the spiritual poverty.Spiritual poverty means the fading of ideal and faith and an inner void. Who suffer it will stop trying to make any further improvements only drifting with the current. Thus, poverty in spirit is not as easy as the material one.Walking from the planned economy to the market economy, nowadays in a world full of material desires, is there someone not eager to be rich? Wealthy itself is innocent; spiritual poverty is the ringleader. Here comes a case. An old woman fainted in the place of the road. Shortsighted people cannot see the distant place; farsighted people cannot see the near sight. We went a long way to find a man without eyesight problems to help the old woman up. Unfortunately, the family of the old woman accuses the man as the peace breaker asking for pension. The man was taken to court. In court, no one is willing to speak for him. How ridiculous it was! What a poor family! Here comes another case. A two-year-old girl had been crashed by a car. All the witness and all the passers-by see the driver run with strained eye!Can you image how many people walk past the injured little girl without doing a favor? 18. What a staggering number. As well as the incident of poisonous milk, clenbuterol, Sudan Red, swill-cooked dirty oil…… All these reveal the weakness and poverty of our spirit. People cannot regard the situation correctly. That is the reason for their being poor.Spiritual poverty is like the erosion to destruct the social atmosphere. It is also a shock to the sense of a community. For me, being poor doesn’t mean living in a difficult environment but being a person caring for nothing but eating. We are still young. Born in a poor family doesn’t mean being poor in the whole life. Material poverty is terrible while the spiritual poverty is the worst. So work hard to avoid suffering the spiritual poverty! We can get rich by our efforts and our hands. What Does Being Poor Mean to YouA family or person being considered to be poor is based on the standards by the country that he lives in. Born in a poor family doesn’t mean being poor in the whole life. Material poverty is terrible while the spiritual poverty is the worst. So work hard to avoid suffering the spiritual poverty! We can get rich by our efforts and our hands. What Does Being Poor Mean to YouDistinguished judges, ladies and gentleman:Good evening! Today, I am very glad to be here to share with you some of my thoughts on the topic of poverty. At first of all, I would like to read a simple story to you.Poet: Did you receive my book of poems?Woman: Oh, yes, I did. It’s very nice. But where did I put it?Her son: It’s under the leg of the table, mom. You used it to make the table steady. When these lines first caught my eyes, I realized what being poor means to me. How poor the poet is! His book of poems is put under the leg of the table to make it steady. He’s so unfortunate that he deserves our pity and sympathy. In today’s society, of course, is an entirely realistic picture. The reality breaks the link of the poet’s effort and reward. That is the first point of what does being poor mean to me.When I grow up, I gradually realize the other point from this poet---spiritual poverty. The benighted and uneducated woman can’t learn the value of the book of poems. According to John Lubbock, books are to mankind what memory is to the individual. It is obvious that we can’t live the life without the books and we can’t live in the spiritual poverty.Spiritual poverty means the fading of ideal and faith and an inner void. Who suffer it will stop trying to make any further improvements only drifting with the current. Thus, poverty in spirit is not as easy as the material one. Here comes a case from < Move China >. Since 1987, Mr. Bai Fangli spent more than ten years on earning money by riding a tricycle, determining to help the children in poor areas achieve their dreams to go to school until he’s 90 years old. In order to keep the children’s on their study, Mr. Bai totalling contributes 350,000 to pay for 300 children’s tuition and cost of living. Although Mr. Bai is uneducated and lived in material poverty, he has a noble character, being rich in spirit. Unlike the woman in the poem, Mr. Bai’s moving story educates our minds and invigorates our spirit.Spiritual poverty is like the erosion to destruct the social atmosphere. It is also a shock to the sense of a community. For me, being poor doesn’t mean being unfortunate or living in a difficult environment but being a person caring for nothing but eating. We are still young. Born in a poor family doesn’t meanbeing poor in the whole life. Material poverty is terrible while the spiritual poverty is the worst. To end my speech, I would like to quote the simple poem again for you to learn a lesson from.Poet: Did you receive my book of poems?Woman: Oh, yes, I did. It’s very nice. But where did I put it?Her son: It’s under the leg of the table, mom. You used it to make the table steady. My dear poet, forget the uneducated woman and fight against to find your own value. Thank you. What Does Being Poor Mean to YouDistinguished judges, ladies and gentleman:Good evening! Today, I am very glad to be here to share with you some of my thoughts on the topic of poverty. I would like to begin with a simple short story.Poet: Did you receive my book of poems?Woman: Oh, yes, I did. It’s very nice. But where did I put it?Her son: It’s under the leg of the table, mom. You used it to make the table steady. When these lines first caught my eyes, what impresses me most is the woman’s spiritual poverty. It is conspicuous that the benighted and uneducated woman can’t learn the value of the book. This reminds me of Benjamin Franklin’s word “Poverty itself is not frightening. What is frightening is assuming that your life is destined to be in poverty or that you will die in poverty.” That means material poverty is terrible while the spiritual poverty is the worst. However, we should look at the poverty from a different angle and have an objective understanding to poverty. As far as I am concerned, weshould attach great importance to promote spiritual civilization and regard poverty as the starting point on the way to success. For one thing, poverty is a motivation to stimulate people’s morale. Grover Cleveland is an example. He was twice elected US president yet he had once been working as an ordinary shop assistant with an annual salary of less than $100. His example clearly shows that poverty can harden people and make them stronger, and that a person’s greatest asset is to be born into a poor family. It shows that the motivation and will to fight stimulated by extreme poverty is enduring and powerful. For another, poverty gives rise to the desire for change. We can learn a lesson from poverty which is the richest experience a person or a country can go through. Take our motherland, China as an example. Chinese history tells us backwardness will leave us vulnerable to bullying, which is the never-forgotten lesson the Chinese people have learnt from their tragic experience of repeated foreign invasions. So we should pay more attention to change the status quo and regard poverty as the starting point on the way to success.Happiness lies not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement. We need to consider poverty as the motivation to stimulate our morale. We need to let poverty give rise to our desire for change. We need to regard poverty as the starting point on the way to success.OK, that's all, thank you for listening. What Does Being Poor Mean to YouDistinguished judges, ladies and gentleman:Good evening! ”'What do you mean by that?' said the Caterpillar sternly. 'Explain yourself!'“你这话是什么意思?”⽑⽑⾍严厉地说,“你⾃⼰解释⼀下!”'I can't explain MYSELF, I'm afraid, sir' said Alice, 'because I'm not myself, you see.'“我没法解释,先⽣,”爱丽丝说,“因为我已经不是我⾃⼰了,你瞧。

Three major types of sonnets are distinguished: the Italian or Petrarchan sonnet, the Shakespearean or English sonnet, and the Spenserian or linked sonnet.A Petrarchan sonnet consists of two divisions: the octave and the sestet. Theoctave refers to the first eight lines, and the sestet the other six lines. The rhyme scheme of the octave is abba abba, and that of the sestet is either cdecde, or cdccdc, or cdedce, or cdcdcd. Very often the octave presents a problem, or narrates a story, or poses a proposition while the sestet offers a solution, analyzes the story, or applies the proposition. An example of the Italian sonnet is "On First Looking into Chapman's Homer” written by John Keats: Much have I travel'd in the realms of gold,And many goodly states and kingdoms seen;Round many western islands have I beenWhich bards in fealty to Apollo hold.Oft of one wide expanse had I been toldThat deep-brow'd Homer ruled as his demesne;Yet did I never breathe its pure sereneTill I heard Chapman speak out loud and bold:Then felt I like some watcher of the skiesWhen a new planet swims into his ken;Or like stout Cortez when with eagle eyesHe star'd at the Pacific―and all his menLook'd at each other with a wild surmise―Silent, upon a peak in Darien. The English or Shakespearean sonnet has three four-line quatrains and a final couplet rhymed abab cdcd efef gg. The quatrains put forth a question or narrative, and the couplet provides a comment. The Spenserian sonnet, which is also organized into three quatrains and a couplet, links the quatrains with a chain or interlocked rhyme scheme: abab bcbc cdcd ee. The Spenserian sonnet is like the Petrarchan sonnet in that its theme is developed in two parts: the final six lines resolve a problem, or comment upon a narrative, or apply a proposition put forward in its first eight lines. An instance of Spenserian sonnet is his "Sonnet 75”: One day I wrote her name upon the strand,But came the waves and washed it away:Agayne I wrote it with a second hand,But came the tyde, and made my paynes his pray."Vayne man,” sayd she, "that doest in vaine assay.A mortall thing so to immortalize,For I my selve shall lyke to this decay, and eek my name bee wyped out lykewize.”"Not so,” quod I, "let baser things devize,To dy in dust, but you shall live by fame:My verse your vertues rare shall eternize,And in the heavens wryte your glorious name.Where whenas death shall all the world subdew,Our love shall live, and later life ren ew.”An example of Shakespearean sonnet is "Sonnet 29” written by William Shakespeare: When, in disgrace with Fortune and men's eyes,I all alone beweep my outcast state,And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,And look upon myself and curse my fate,Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,Featured like him, like him with friends possessed,Desiring this man's art and that man's scope,With what I most enjoy contented least;Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,Haply I think on thee, and then my stateLike to the lark at break of day arisingFrom sullen earth sings hymns at heaven's gate; For thy sweet love remembered such wealth bringsThat then I scorn to change my state with kings. It should be noted that some sonnets have more than 14 lines, and some have less than 14 lines.2Rhyme: Also spelled "rime,” it is the repetition of identical or similar concluding sounds in different words at the ends of poetic lines. The words not only sound identical or very similar but also appear in parallel positions in two or more lines. There are many kinds of rhymes, some of which are as follows:1.End rhyme―the most common form of rhyme in poetry; the rhyme appears at theend of the lines; for example, make/lake.2.Internal rhyme―the appearance of similar sounds within a verse line. Words inthe middle can rhyme with words at the end of lines; for example, "While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping.”3.Beginning rhyme―the use of the same consonant at the beginning of each accentedsyllable in a verse line; for example, "around the rock the ragged rascal ran.”4.Feminine rhyme―when two syllables are rhymed; for example, marry/tarry.5.Masculine rhyme―the rhyming sound falls on a single stressed syllable; forexample, heat/beat.6.Triple rhyme―it matches the sound of the stressed syll able and the twounstressed syllables that follow; for example "narrative” and "declarative.”7.Half rhyme―when the final consonants are the same but the preceding vowels aredifferent; for example, dove/have.8.Eye rhyme―when two sylla bles look identical but are pronounced differently;for example, wind/kind; bough/cough. It is also called "sight rhyme.”9.Rime riche―rhyme between words or syllables that are identical in sound, butthe two identical sounding words have different senses; for example, maid/ made;pair/pear.10.Leonine rhyme―this involves the rhyming of the syllable immediately precedingthe caesura with the syllable at the end of the line; for example, "He found the forest track, be brought back.”11.Couplet―a pair of lines rhyming consecutively; for example, "Candy / Is Dandy.”12.Perfect rhyme―also called "full rhyme” or "true rhyme,” it is the rhyme inwhich the final stressed vowel and all succeeding consonants or syllables are identical, while the preceding consonants are different; for example, great/late;dutiful/unbeautiful.13.Cross rhyme―the rhyme occurs in the middle or at the end of one line and inthe middle of the next; for example, "While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, / As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.”14.Near rh yme―also called "off rhyme,” "slant rhyme,” and "approximate rhyme,”the sounds are almost alike, but not exactly. It consists of identical consonant sounds preceded by different vowel sounds; for example, home/same.15.Random rhymes―the rhymes seem to occur accidentally in no specific combination, often mixed with unrhymed lines.Historically, rhyme was slow in coming into poetry. Not all poetry rhymes; ancient Greek and Latin poetry never rhymes. It was not until the Middle Ages that the use of rhymes was made popular.3Iambic pentameter: a popular metrical pattern in English poetry, which consists of five iambic feet per line. Rhymed pairs of iambic pentameter are called heroic couplets, and unrhymed iambic pentameter is called blank verse. The rhymed pairs of iambic pentameter are associated with Chaucer, Dryden, Johnson, and Pope while the unrhymed iambic pentameter is best represented by Shakespeare and Milton. The form of iambic pentameter is very flexible: occasionally the expected order of accent in one or more feet is reversed; these feet are called trochees. The following example of iambic pentameter is taken from Pope's An Essay on Criticism:A little Learning is a dang'rous Thing;Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian Spring:There shallow Draughts intoxicate the Brain,And drinking largely sobers us again.。

Lesson Ten What is it like to be poor?It is altogether curious, your first contact with poverty. You have thought so much about poverty -- it is the thing you have feared all your life, the thing you knew would happen to you sooner or later;and it is all so utterly and prosaically different. You thought it would be quite simple;it is extraordinarily complicated. You thought it would be terrible;it is merely squalid and boring. It is the peculiar lowness of poverty that you discover first:the shifts that it puts you to,the complicated meanness, the crust-wiping.

You discover, for instance, the secrecy attaching to poverty. At a sudden stroke you have been reduced to an income of six francs a day.But of course you dare not admit it -- you have got to pretend that you are living quite as usual.Form the start it tangles you in a net of lies, and even with the lies you can hardly manage it.You stop sending clothes to the laundry, and the laundress catches you in the street and asks you why;you mumble something, and she, thinking you are sending the clothes elsewhere,is your enemy for life. The tobacconist keeps asking why you have cut down on your smoking. There are letters you want to answer, and cannot, because stamps are too expensive. And then there are your meals -- meals are the worst difficulty of all.Every day at meal-times you go out, ostensibly to a restaurant, and loaf an hour in the Luxembourg Gardens, watching the pigeons.Afterwards you smuggle your food home in your pockets.Your food is bread and margarine,or bread and wine, and even the nature of the food is governed by lies. You have to buy rye bread instead of household bread, because the rye loaves, though dearer, are round and can be smuggled in your pockets. This wastes you a franc a day.Sometimes,to keep up appearances, you have to spend sixty centimes on a drink, and go correspondingly short of food.Your linen gets filthy, and you run out of soap and razorblades.Your hair wants cutting, and you try to cut it yourself, with such fearful results that you have to go to the barber after all,and spend the equivalent of a day’s food. All day you are telling lies, and expensive lies.

You discover the extreme precariousness of your six francs a day. Mean disasters happen and rob you of food. You have spent your last eighty centimes on half a litre of milk, and are boiling it over the spirit lamp. While it boils a bug runs down your forearm; you give the bug a flick with your nail, and it falls, plop! straight into the milk. There is nothing for it but to throw the milk away and go foodless.

You go to the baker’s to buy a pound of bread, and you wait while the girl cuts a poundfor another customer. She is clumsy, and cuts more than a pound. “Pardon, monsieur,”she says. “I suppose you don’t mind paying two sous extra?” Bread is a franc a pound, and you have exactly a franc. When you think that you too might be asked to pay two sous extra, and would have to confess that you could not, you bolt in panic. It is hours before you dare venture into a baker’s shop again.

You go to the greengrocer’s to spend a franc on a kilogram of potatoes. But one of the pieces that make up the franc is a Belgium piece, and the shopman refuses it. You slink out of the shop, and can never go there again.

You have strayed into a respectable quarter, and you see a prosperous friend coming. To avoid him you dodge into the nearest café. Once in the caféyou must buy something, so you spend your last fifty centimes on a glass of black coffee with a dead fly in it. One could multiply these disasters by the hundred. They are part of the process of being hard up.
