And I'v e always been very loyal to the company. And I feel that I've worked quite hard here. And I've never been promoted. It's getting to the point now in my life where, you know, I need more money. I would like to buy a car. I'd like to start a family, and maybe buy a house, all of which is impossible with the current salary you are paying me.You told me to earn a raise I need to take more initiative and show more enthusiasm for the job. Maybe I could show a little more enthusiasm. I still think that I work hard here. But a company does have at least an obligation to pay its employees enough to live on. And the salary I'm getting here isn't enough. I can barely cover my expenses. And it's absolutely necessary for me to have a raise or I cannot justify keeping this job any more.[分析] 特定信息的找寻和判断。

At that time, inland waterways provided North America's most popular form of long-distance transportation. Travel by rivers was often more convenient than taking a wagon over primitive country roads, especially when shipping heavy loads of farm products or household goods. Where the natural waterways were inadequate, shallow canals were built. The Erie Canal, opened in 1825, connected the Great Lakes with the upper Hudson River. It allowed settlers in the Great Lakes region to send their crops eastward to New York City at the mouth of Hudson at a much lower cost. From there, crops could be shipped to other Atlantic ports. The construction of the Erie Canal also encouraged westward migration along inland waterways and helped populate the frontier. The City of Detroit grew up between two of the Great Lakes. Later a canal joined the Great Lakes with the Mississippi river system and Chicago became a thriving city. Politically the waterway system united the nation in a way few had imagined possible, by the mid-1800s, faster and cheaper railroads became more popular and the canal system declined. Railroads could be used year round whereas canals were often frozen in the winter. During the first third of the century, however, transportation on rivers, lakes and canals aided greatly in the growth of the United States. [分析] 特定信息的找寻和判断。

翻译三级口译综合能力-3(总分:100.00,做题时间:90分钟)一、{{B}}Part Ⅰ{{/B}}(总题数:1,分数:10.00)(分数:10.00)(1).For the past two decades, girls have always achieved high scores than boys.(分数:1.00)A.正确√B.错误解析:[听力原文]1-10 In April, the Manhattan Institute released its yearly study of graduation rates. The research group used information from 2003. The researchers found that 72 percent of girls successfully completed their high school education. That compared to 65 percent of boys. The newspaper Education Week noted earlier this year that, in some ways, what people are worried about now is really not new. Boys have scored lower than girls on tests in the National Assessment of Educational Progress since at least 1971. And the differences are not limited to the United States. Education Week noted the results of an international reading test in 2003.Fifteen-year-olds took the test in 41 countries. Girls scored higher than boys in almost every country. Differences between males and females are a continuing issue of fierce debate. Cultural and economic influences play an important part. But recent findings suggest that another part of the answer lies in differences between the male and female brains. These include differences in learning rates. As a result, some researchers say, boys may not be able to develop language and reading skills as well as girls do. The last time there was a lot of concern about differences in school, it was about girls, especially in math and science classes. Efforts to improve the situation for girls included hiring more female teachers. Yet some people think the opposite situation exists now. They say not enough male teachers is one reason why boys may not learn as well in class. Another explanation being heard involves the increased testing in American schools. Some people say schools are preparing for these important tests by forcing boys to sit quietly at their desks. They say this is unfair. Still others say that society is failing boys, by giving them the message that studying is not manly. And others say boys are failing in school because they become too interested in the girls in their classes. One attempt to solve problems like these is the use of same-sex classrooms.

Her grandfather left her to his wife, Emma, a severe woman who wore black dresses and resented and ignored my mother. Emma discouraged visitors and rarely allowed my mother to attend parties or other functions. One Halloween, when she caught my mother trick-or-treating with school friends, Emma decided to confine her to her room for an entire year, except for the hours she was in school. She forbade my mother to eat at the kitchen table or linger in the front yard. This cruel punishment went on for months until Emma’s sister came for a visit and put a stop to it. By the time my mother turned fourteen, she could no longer bear life in her grandmother’s house. She found work as a mother’s helper, caring for two young children in return for room, board and three dollars a week. She had little time for the extracurricular athletics and drama that she loved and no money for clothes. She washed the same blouse everyday to wear with her only skirt and, in colder weather, her only sweater. But for the first time, she lived in household where the father and mother gave their children the love, attention and guidance she had never received. My mother often told me that without that sojourn with a strong family, she would not have known how to care for her own home and children.1.Emma is my great grandmother。

涉及知识点:英译汉11.Ladies and gentlemen, To talk about the importance and effectiveness of the global human resource management, I would like to take Coca-Cola Company as a quintessence. The Coca-cola Company is one of the most successful multinational enterprises. With operations in close to 200 countries and nearly 80 percent of its operating income derived from business outside the Unites States, Coca-Cola is typically perceived as the quintessential global corporation. Coca-Cola, however, likes to think of itself as a “multi-local” company that just happens to be headquartered in Atlanta but could be headquartered anywhere and that presents the Coca-Cola brand with a “local face” in every country where it does business. The philosophy is best summarized by the phrase “ think globally, act locally,”which captures the essence of Coca-Cola’s cross-boarder management mentality. Coca-Cola grants national businesses the freedom to conduct operations in a manner appropriate to the market. At the same time, the company tries to establish a common mind-set that all its employees share. Coca-Cola manages its global operations through 25 operating divisions that are organized under six regional groups: North America, the European Union, the Pacific Region, the east Europe/Middle East Group, Africa, and Latin America. The corporate human resource management (HRM) function is charged with providing the glue that binds these various divisions and groups into the Coca-Cola family. The corporate HRM function achieves this in two main ways: (1) by propagating a common human resources philosophy within the company, and (2) by developing a group of internationally minded mid-level executives for future senior management responsibility. The corporate HRM group sees its mission as one of developing and providing the underlying philosophy around which local businesses can develop their own human resource practices. For example, rather than have a standard salary policy for all its national operations, Coca-Cola has a common salary philosophy —the total compensation package should becompetitive with the best companies in the local market. Twice a year the corporate HRM group also conducts a two-week HRM orientation session for the human resource staff from each of its 25 operating divisions. These sessions give an overview of the company’s HRM philosophy and talk about how local businesses can translate that philosophy into human resource policies. As much as possible, Coca-Cola tries to staff its operations with local personnel. To quote one senior executive: “We strive to have a limited number of international people in the field because generally local people are better equipped to do business at their home locations. “ However, expatriates are needed in the system for two main reasons. One is to fill a need for a specific set of skills that might not exist at a particular location. The second reason for using an expatriate is to improve the employee’s own skill base. Coca-Cola believes that because it is a global company, senior managers should have had international exposure. The corporate HRM group has about 500 high-level managers involved in its “global service program. “Coca-Cola characterizes these managers as people who have knowledge of their particular field, plus knowledge of the company, and who can do two things in an international location —add value by the expertise they bring to each assignment and enhance their contribution to the company by having international experience. Of the 500 participants in the program, about 200 move each year. To ease the costs of transfer for these employees, Coca-Cola gives those in its global service program a US-based compensation package. They are paid according to US benchmarks, as opposed to the benchmark prevailing in the country in which they are located. An ultimate goal of this program is to build a cadre of internationally minded high-level managers from which the future senior managers of Coca-Cola will be drawn. The above is my observation of Coca-Cola’s HRM. Thank you for your attention.正确答案:女士们、先生们:我想把可口可乐公司作为一个典范来谈谈全球人力资源管理的重要性和有效性。

口译三级综合能力(多项选择)模拟试卷3(题后含答案及解析)题型有:1. 4 percent last year, but lower than in any year of the pre-crisis decade. Employment growth deteriorated in every geographic region except South Asia and North Africa. Indeed, it was the strong acceleration of employment growth in South Asia that helped keep global employment growth stable last year compared with 2 years ago. The largest slowdowns occurred in Central and South -Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean and South-East Asia and the Pacific. As a consequence, the crisis-related global jobs gap, measuring the number of jobs lost in comparison to pre-crisis trends, widened further to 62 million workers last year. The jobs gap includes not only the increase in unemployment, but also those people who have remained outside or dropped out of the labor force after having been discouraged by long spells of unemployment or perceived low prospects of finding new job opportunities. At the global level, it is estimated that a total 23 million people are currently in this situation, so-called “discouraged workers”. As unemployment continues to persist, 3 years later the global gap is projected to rise to 81 million; this includes some 30 million discouraged workers who might never come back to the labor market. Labor market developments differ widely across regions and countries. In the developed economies and European Union region, 8. 6 percent of the labor force is unemployed, which is almost 3 percentage points higher than 8 years ago. Unemployment rates in the United States and the United Kingdom have declined, whereas they have edged up further in Italy and France. Only small improvements in the unemployment rate were seen in Canada, Japan and Germany. In the medium term, only the United States is expected to see substantially declining unemployment rates, and even there, the unemployment rate is projected to remain above pre-crisis levels. For other G7 countries, the unemployment rate is not projected to move substantially from current levels for the foreseeable future.Unemployment Edges Higher V ocabulary and Expressions deteriorate acceleration slowdowns1.How was the global employment before crisis?A.It had been affected by the slower economic recovery.B.It had been slowing down across most regions.C.It grew by a mere 1. 4 percent.D.It was higher than in the year after crisis.正确答案:D解析:根据原文“Labor markets have been affected by the slower economic recovery.Employment growth slowed down last year across most regions.Global employment grew by a mere 1.4 percent last year, but lower than in any year of the pre-crisis decade”可知,选项A、B、C都是危机后的就业状况,故排除;而D 项认为危机之前全球就业率比危机之后高,这与原文“去年全球就业率仅增长1.4%,但是低于危机前10年任何一年”意思一致,故选D。

Enveloped by an ocean of air consisting of 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen, the planet is the only one in our solar system known to harbor life. Circling the Sun at an average distance of 149 million km (93 million miles), the Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the fifth largest planet in the solar system. Its rapid spin and molten nickel-iron core give rise to an extensive magnetic field which, coupled with the atmosphere, shields us from nearly all of the harmful radiation coming from the Sun and other stars. Most meteors burn up in the Earth's atmosphere before they can strike the surface. The planet's active geological processes have left no evidence of the ancient pelting it almost certainly received soon after it was formed. The Earth has a single natural satellite -- the Moon.51. Approximately how much of the Earth's atmosphere is nitrogen?A. One-fourth.B. One-half.C. Three-fourths.D. All of it.52. Which of the following helps to create the Earth's magnetic fields?A. The main idea of this passage is that ______.A. there are life-supporting characteristics on the EarthB. the Earth is predominantly waterC. the Earth has no common characteristics with other planetsD. the Earth is the only planet with a moon56. This selection leads one to believe that the Earth ______.A. never gets hit by meteorsB. always gets hit by meteorsC. was hit by meteors some time in the pastD. may be bombarded by meteors in the near futureSince life began eons ago, thousands of creatures have come and gone. Some, such as the dinosaurs, became extinct due to naturally changing ecologic conditions. More recent threats to life forms are humans and their activities. Man has drained marshes, burned prairies, dammed and diverted rivers. Some of the more recent casualties of man's expansion have been the dodo, great auk, passenger pigeon, Irish elk, and Steller's sea cow. Sadly, we can no longer attribute the increasing decline in our wild animals and plant species to "natural" processes. Many species are dying out because of exploitation, habitat alteration or destruction, pollution, or the introduction of new species of plants and animals to an area. As mandated by Congress, protecting endangered species, and restoring them to the point where their existence is no longer jeopardized, is the primary objective of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Endangered Species Program.57. Which of the following is a form of man's habitat alteration?A. Glacial encroachment.B. Hurricanes.C. Dammed rivers.D. Snowstorms.58. Which of the following has become extinct due to man's destruction ?A. African elephant.B. Irish elk.C. Giant panda.D. White Bengal.59. Their scores improved significantly. The other 8 students (who did not receive the beta blockers) improved only slightly. My mother often told me that without that sojourn with a strong family, she would not have known how to care for her own home and children.1.Emma is my grandmother.2.Emma seldom allowed my mother to go to parties.3.One Halloween, Emma decided to punish my mother because she didn’t go to school.4.My mother was confined to her room for an entire year.5.To punish her, Emma forbade my mother to eat.6.At the age of fourteen, my mother found work and moved out of Emma’s house.7.My mother loved extracurricular athletics and drama.8.I never received love, attention and guidance from my mother.9.My mother didn’t know how to care for her own home and children.10.My mother took care of two kids for room, board and three dollars a week.B. We had nothing definite except that he married Minerva Ann Hamilton in Michigan in 1860.When I was a small child, my father had given me the address of his “Aunt Maggie,” Mrs. William Rarick of Everson, Washington. She and I exchanged letters for about three years while I was still a youngster. My father died without giving any further information about his relatives.About eighty-five years after my correspondence with Aunt Maggie, I decided to see if I could pick up the trail and find out exactly how she fit into the family puzzle. By then I was in my nineties so I knew the odds were not on my side, but I called the telephone operator for a number of anybody by the name of Rarick in the town of Everson, Washington. She told me they have a Charles Rarick and an L. Rarick. I asked her to ring Charles, but there was no answer so I asked her to try L. Rarick.A woman answered and I said, “Hello, this is Carleton Denny. I am trying to locate relatives of Margaret Rarick.”The lady on the telephone took a long breath and hesitantly said, “She was my grandmother.”I learned that Aunt Maggie was my grandfather’s half sister. The “L” stood for Luella, who still used her maiden name. I had found my family.21. Where and when was my grandfather married?22. When did I decide to find out about “Aunt Maggie”?23. How did I find L. Rarick?24. When I reached L. Rarick, she was ___________.25. Which of the following is not true about “Aunt Maggie”?Passage TwoThe history of American newspapers has paralleled the history of our culture. As our society has changed, so have its newspapers.Early colonial newspapers were designed for the elite – those who were interested in political and business information. With the advent of new technology, compulsory education and the major cultural changes brought on by industrialization and urbanization, newspapers moved into the popular culture with the advent of the penny press. The significant changes in our society as the United States was transformed into a truly industrial nation between the end of the Civil War and the turn of the 20th century brought about many changes in American journalism, including the era of sensationalism, or yellow journalism.Twentieth-century newspapers, for the most part, have attempted to blend objectivity and social responsibility. This era also has seen the development of electronic news media, interpretative reporting, investigative reporting, advocacy journalism, “new journalism” and specialized newspapers.Wire services play an important role in gathering news and information for the mass media. The two largest American wire services are the Associated Press and United Press International. The other dominant worldwide news sources are AFP, Reuters and Tass, headquartered in Paris, London and Moscow, respectively.Individual biases and other problems play a role in making mass communication a complex activity. Although the various functions of the media – to inform, entertain, influence, advertise and transmit culture – are criticized, the most severely criticized is the function to inform. Reasons for this are that people (1) tend to blame the messenger for unpleasant information, (2) fail to understand the watchdog function of the media, (3) believe the myth that the mass media dwell only on bad news and (4) bring their own biases into the information-sharing process.26. What kind of people were early colonial newspapers designed for?27. Which of the following did not contribute to the popularization of newspapers?28. When was the United States transformed into a truly industrial country?29. Which of the following are the two largest American wire services?30. According to the passage, which of the following is the most severely criticized function of the mass media?Passage ThreeThere is a widespread assumption that work gets harder after 40. But in most organizations work gets dramatically easier after 40.The responsibilities may be heavier, but after 40 you should be valued for your experience, know-how and judgment, rather than for the ability to work 18 hours every day. Most of the major rewards of success tend to accumulate after the age of 40 – if you do the right things before that watershed birthday. What are the right things? First of all, do your homework; learn every thing you need to know about your business or profession before 40. Second, develop your own style. Before you’re 40, learn what you’re comfortable with, whether it’s in the way you dress or simply the small touches that set you apart. Third, put your emotional life in order, if possible. It’s a great help, when climbing toward the higher rungs of the career ladder, to be happy in life, rather than to find yourself mired in emotional crises. It’s hard enough to succeed without taking on personal problems that sap your energy and divert your attention. Besides, unhappiness is like a disease – it gradually eclipses interest in everything else.Fourth, know your weaknesses. Accept the things you don’t do well, can’t stand, won’t do.Fifth, know your strengths. You’d better decide what you’re good at, too, and recognize the things you enjoy doing and do better than anyone else. Whatever your role, knowing who you are and what you’re good at is critical for success.31. What is the common opinion about age and work?32. What does the speaker think about age and work?33. What should not be valued after one is 40?34. According to this passage, what should you do after 40?35. What is the key to success in the speaker’s opinion?Part III Parts of the following text are missing. While listening to the tape, complete the passage by filling in each blank space with an appropriate word or words. There are 20 blanks, each carrying one point. You will hear the passage only once.WASHINGTON. The Bush administration has signaled for the first time that it may be willing to allow a multinational force in Iraq to operate under the sponsorship of the United Nations as long as it is commanded by an American. The idea was described by Richard L. Armitage, the deputy secretary of state, as just "one idea being explored" in discussions at the United Nations. It was first hinted at publicly last week by Kofi Annan, the United Nations’ secretary general.Mr. Armitage's remarks, made on Tuesday to regional reporters and released by the State Department today, represent a potential shift in course for the administration, which has until now insisted that all military, economic and political matters in Iraq remain under total American control. Allowing the United Nations a leadership role would be intended to win the support of the Security Council for a new mandate authorizing the American-led occupation of the country. In his remarks, Mr. Armitage declined to discuss the plans in any detail, saying, "I don't think it helps to throw them out publicly right now." But he described the arrangement under consideration as "a multinational force under U.N. leadership" in which "the American would be the U.N. commander."On Monday, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld was asked whether he could envision American troops fighting under United Nations’ command. His answer: "I think that's not going to happen." But he went on to rule out only "a blue-hatted leadership" meaning by the United Nations, whose troops wear blue helmets over a peacekeeping force in Iraq.Part IV Listen to the following passage. Write a short summary of around 150words of what you have heard. This part of the test carries 30 points. You will hear the passage only once.A three-year-old Brooklyn girl who suffered a skull fracture and was so malnourished that court papers described her as "skin and bones" died yesterday morning. Before the child died, her parents were arrested on abuse charges, but now they could face more serious charges. Officials said yesterday that a grand jury would begin this week to weigh charges against her parents in the death. The girl's mother initially told detectives that the child was not hers and that she had recently been smuggled into the United States from Mexico, where she suffered the injuries, the police said. But the mother has since admitted that she withheld food from the girl, Edith Gonzalez, as punishment, a senior law enforcement official said. The woman, who also gave the police a false name and address when she was arrested late Monday, was arraigned yesterday on charges of endangering the welfare of a child, a felony, and reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor. Her boyfriend, the child's father, was arrested late Tuesday and arraigned yesterday on the same charges. Both pleaded not guilty and were held without bail.At the two arraignments yesterday, in Brooklyn Criminal Court, and in interviews with investigators and neighbors, a picture began to emerge of a household where abuse of the little girl seemed more the rule rather than the exception.Punishment, as the child's mother and father put it in statements to the police and prosecutors, was not limited to withholding food and beatings—he said he beat her with his fists, a belt and a cable and that the child's mother struck the three-year-old with a cable, according to court papers and the law enforcement official. The mother also admitted that she sometimes plunged the child into a tub filled with ice water, the official said. The mother, now identified as Tania Cabrera, 23, first told the police that her name was Patricia Aguirre and that she was 25 years old.Ms. Cabrera, in her statements to the police and prosecutors, detailed instances of abuse in the home that the couple share on George Street in Bushwick, Brooklyn, with their daughter and Ms. Cabrera's five-year-old boy with another man, the official said. She said her boyfriend, Edison Gonzalez, 19, favored Edith over the boy, Javier, prompting arguments, and Ms. Cabrera said she eventually took out her frustration onthe girl, the official said. Ms. Cabrera also said Mr. Gonzalez would drink and become abusive. It remained unclear yesterday exactly how the little girl suffered the skull fracture and cerebral bruising that were among her most serious injuries, but the criminal complaints charging Ms. Cabrera said that the child had seizures on both Sunday and Monday, and that on the second day, the child fell from a chair, striking her head.An autopsy to determine the cause of death, which will in some measure determine whether more serious charges are brought, will be performed today, officials said.2003年英语三级口译综合能力答案Part IA (10 points, 1 point per question)4.FalseFalseFalse5.3.1.2.FalseTrueFalse10.TrueFalse9.6.True7.True8.B (10 points, 1 point per question)11. a 12. c 13. b 14. c 15. c16. b 17. a 18. d 19. a 20. bPart II (30 points, 2 points per question)21. d 22. c 23. a 24. b 25. c26. b 27. c 28. d 29. a 30. d31. d 32. a 33. a 34. b 35. aPart III (20 points, 1 point per blank)1. signaled2. allow3.sponsorship4. it is commanded5. one idea being explored6. hinted at7. on Tuesday 8. the State Department 9. a potential shift10. military, economic and political 11. a leadership role12. a new mandate 13.
