计算机网络是在网络协议的控制下,通过通信设备和线路 将分布在不同地理位置,且具有独立功能的多个计算机系 统连接起来,通过网络操作系统等网络软件实现通信和资 源共享的系统. 可以从以下几个方面来理解:

协议是指网络中的计算机在通信时对传送信息的理解,信 息表示的形式及各种应答信号所应遵循的共同约定. 为了降低网络设计的复杂性,计算机网络协议采用分层结 构,每层协议完成一类特定的功能,下一层为上一层提供 服务,各层之间的协议总和被称为体系结构. 国际标准化组织(ISO)颁布了开放系统互连参考模型 (OSI)的国际标准,OSI模型是一个七层模型,每一层 实现特定的功能并且只与上下两层直接通信.
4.计算机网络的分类 .
根据网络所覆盖的地理范围,计算机网络可分为:个人区 域网,局域网,城域网,广域网和Internet.

个人区域网(Personal Area Network,简称PAN):在一米见方 的范围内,仅仅供一个人使用的网络. 局域网(Local area network,简称LAN):是指覆盖范围较小, 通信线路不长的网络.一般来说,局域网的组建便利,传输速率 高,出错率低.传统局域网的传输速率为10~100Mb/s,现在的传 输速率可达每秒钟百兆,千兆甚至万兆. 城域网(Metropolitan area network,简称MAN):是指一个城 市范围内的计算机网络.一个城域网一般要连接多个局域网,通 常用光纤作为通信介质,连接一些重要的部门.可以传输语音, 文本,图像和视频等多媒体信息.

中继器(Repeater)也称转发器,工作在物理层,主要功能是将 传入信号放大整形后再转发出去. 集线器(Hub)位于共享式以太网中心,用于集中完成多台网络 设备连接.传统集线器一般认为工作在物理层.双绞线以太网总 是与集线器或交换机配合使用.集线器外观与交换机相似. 交换机(Switch)位于交换式以太网中心,可以提供多台网络设 备的连接.传统交换机一般认为工作在数据链路层,存储着节点 的地址表,通过在数据帧的始发者和目标接收者之间建立临时的 交换路径,使数据帧直接由源地址到达目的地址.

双绞线:由两根互相绝缘的铜导线绞合而成.双绞线成本低廉,是最常 用的网络传输介质之一. 同轴电缆:由两层导体组成,在两层导体之间有绝缘层,这种结构既能 增加抗电磁干扰的能力,还能减少信息在传输过程中的损失,但成本比 双绞线高. 光缆:光缆由一组光纤再加上加强芯及填充物等组成,然后整个光缆由 包带层和护套包起.光缆的特点是:通信容量大,可达到每秒2000兆位 或更高;传输距离长,直接传输的距离可达几十千米;信号不会受电磁 干扰及噪声的影响.
工作站:在计算机网络中,只向服务器提出请求而不为其 他计算机提供服务的计算机设备称为工作站.
