cheers, applause.)T onight, more than 200 years after a former colony won the right to determine its own destiny, the task of perfecting our union moves forward.(Cheers, applause.)It moves forward because of you.It moves forward because you reaffirmed the spirit that has triumphed over war and depression, the spirit that has lifted this country from the depths of despair to the great heights of hope, the belief that while each of us will pursue our own individual dreams, we are an American family, and we rise or fall together as one nation and as one people.(Cheers, applause.)Tonight, in this election, you, the American people, reminded us that while our road has been hard, while our journey has been long, we have picked ourselves up, we have fought our way back, and we know in our hearts that for the United States of America, the best is yet to come.(Cheers, applause.)I want to thank every American who participated in this election.(Cheers, applause.)Whether you voted for the very first time--(cheers)--or waited in line for a very long time--(cheers)--by the way, we have to fix that.(Cheers, applause.)Whether you pounded the pavement or picked up the phone--(cheers, applause)--whetheryou held an Obama sign or a Romney sign, you made your voice heard and you made a difference.(Cheers, applause.)I just spoke with Governor Romney and I congratulated him and Paul Ryan on a hard-fought campaign.(Cheers, applause.)We may have battled fiercely, but it's only because we love this country deeply and we care so strongly about its future. From George to Lenore to their son Mitt, the Romney family has chosen to give back to America through public service. And that is a legacy that we honor and applaud tonight.(Cheers, applause.)In the weeks ahead, I also look forward to sitting down with Governor Romney to talk about where we can work together to move this country forward.(Cheers, applause.)I want to thank my friend and partner of the last four years, America's happy warrior, the best vice president anybody could ever hope for, Joe Biden.(Cheers, applause.)And I wouldn't be the man I am today without the woman who agreed to marry me 20 years ago.(Cheers, applause.)Let me say this publicly.Michelle, I have never loved you more.(Cheers, applause.)I have never been prouder to watch the rest of America fall in love with you too as our nation's first lady.(Cheers, applause.)Sasha and Malia--(cheers, applause)--before our very eyes, you're growing up to become two strong, smart, beautiful young women, just like your mom.(Cheers, applause.)And I am so proud of you guys. But I will say that for now, one dog's probably enough.(Laughter.)To the best campaign team and volunteers in the history of politics--(cheers, applause)--the best--the best ever--(cheers, applause)--some of you were new this time around, and some of you have been at my side since the very beginning.(Cheers, applause.)But all of you are family. No matterwhat you do or where you go from here, you will carry the memory of the history we made together.(Cheers, applause.)And you will have the lifelong appreciation of a grateful president.Thank you for believing all the way--(cheers, applause)--to every hill, to every valley.(Cheers, applause.)You lifted me up the whole day, and I will always be grateful for everything that you've done and all the incredible work that you've put in.(Cheers, applause.)I know that political campaigns can sometimes seem small, even silly. And that provides plenty of fodder for the cynics who tell us that politics is nothing more than a contest of egos or the domain of special interests. But if you ever get the chance to talk to folks who turned out at our rallies and crowded along a rope line in a high school gym or--or saw folks working late at a campaign office in some tiny county far away from home, you'll discover something else. You'll hear the determination in the voice of a young field organizer who's working his way through college and wants to make sure every child has that same opportunity.(Cheers, applause.)You'll hear the pride in the voice of a volunteer who's going door to door because her brother was finally hired when the local auto plant added another shift.(Cheers, applause.)You'll hear the deep patriotism in the voice of a military spouse who's working the phones late at night to make sure that no one who fights for this country ever has to fight for a job or a roof over their head when they come home.(Cheers, applause.) That's why we do this. That's what politics can be.That's why elections matter. It's not small, it's big. It's important.Democracy in a nation of 300 million can be noisy and messy and complicated. We have our own opinions. Each of us has deeplyheld beliefs. And when we go through tough times, when we make big decisions as a country, it necessarily stirs passions, stirs up controversy. That won't change after tonight. And it shouldn't.These arguments we have are a mark of our liberty, and we can never forget that as we speak, people in distant nations are risking their lives right now just for a chance to argue about the issues that matter--(cheers, applause)--the chance to cast their ballots like we did today.(我们争论是我们自由的标志,我们永远也不能忘记,就在我们争辩之时,遥远国度的人们此时此刻却在冒着生命危险,仅仅为了得到一个争论重要事情的机会--(欢呼声,掌声)--一个像我们今天所做的投票的机会。

中考满分英语作文爱的传承600字
中考满分英语作文爱的传承600字English CompositionTitle: The Legacy of LoveIt was a crisp autumn morning, the kind that paints the world in hues of gold and whispers of the coming winter. I was on my way to school, my mind preoccupied with the day's lessons, when I noticed an elderly woman struggling with her groceries. Her frail figure was a stark contrast to the bustling world around her, and something within me stirred.Without a second thought, I approached her and offered my help. Her eyes, a map of a thousand stories, lit up with gratitude as she handed me her bags. As we walked together, she shared tales of her youth, her voice a melody that carried the wisdom of the ages. One story, in particular, resonated with me. It was about her own grandmother, who had once done the same for a stranger in need. The act of kindness had been passed down, a tradition of love that had become a part of her family's identity. I was struck by the realization that I was not just helping an old woman; I was part of a continuum, a living testament to the legacy of love. The legacy of love is not something we inherit; it is something we create through our actions. It is a story that we write with every kind word, every compassionate deed, and every moment of understanding. And as I sat down to write this essay, I knew that the story of that old woman and her groceries would forever be a part of my own narrative, a chapter in the legacy of love that I carry forward.Chinese Translation标题:爱的传承在生活的织锦中,有爱的线贯穿世代,将我们以超越时间的遗产紧密相连。

以爱的传递为话题的英语作文
英文:The Passing of LoveLove is an intangible force that flows through our lives,温暖ing our hearts and connecting us with others. It is not limited to romantic relationships, but extends to family, friends, neighbors, and even strangers. The beauty of love lies in its ability to be passed on, shared, and multiplied. In families, love is often passed down from generation to generation. Parents shower their children with love, nurturing them and teaching them valuable life lessons. As these children grow up, they internalize this love and pass it on to their own children, creating a legacy of love that spans across the years. In friendships, love is expressed through acts of kindness and support. Friends are there for each other in times of joy and sorrow, sharing experiences and providing comfort. As friends grow apart or move on to new stages in their lives, they carry this love with them, passing it on to new friends and expanding the circle of love.In society, love is expressed through acts of kindness and compassion. We see it in the way people help each other during disasters, volunteer their time and resources to help those in need, and show empathy towards strangers. This love does not discriminate and has the power to bring people together, creating a more harmonious and inclusive world. The passing of love is a beautiful cycle that transforms lives and creates meaningful connections. It is a force that can overcome challenges, heal wounds, and bring joy and fulfillment to our lives. Let us cherish the love we receive, pass it on to others, and create a world filled with warmth and compassion.中文对照:爱的传递爱是一种无形的力量,流淌在我们的生活中,温暖着我们的心灵,将我们与他人相连。

American football can be pretty competitive. From old opponents to fan drama, it’s just another part of the game. There have even been all-out violent fights in the name of defending your team. However, one high school football player Mario Hoefer showed that his love for the sport didn’t take priority over helping a person in need. One afternoon in September, Charles City High School football team Mario was on faced nearby New Hampton in a Friday football game. Mario was captain of his team and Carter the quarterback of the opposing team.It was really foggy and awfully hot. Filled with excited audience in the stands, the stadium felt like a heated steamer. Every player was we win sweat even during the warm-ups. All this meant the game would be a tough one and a test or the mind and body of both teams.Soon the game began and for the first three quarters, each team seemed to have a chance to win and theytook the lead by turns. So exhausted was Mario running back and forth that he cramped (抽筋) up twice. Each time he got a cramp near the New Hampton sideline, his teammates came to his assistance and stretched his leg to ease the cramp. Though feeling uncomfortable and worn out, Mario soldiered on as Charles City protected a slim lead and New Hampton attempted a late comeback. In the fourth quarter, Mario saw his teammates across the field break up a crucial pass intended for Carter. Mario was about to cross over to the other side of the field to high five his teammates when he noticed that beside him, Carter fell onto the ground, screaming in pain, his eyes wide open and a look of panic on his face. Carter grabbed his left calf (小腿肚), trying to move his leg in different positions. Judging from Carter’s desperate expression, Mario realized Carter was possibly experiencing an unbearable cramp just as he himself had gone through minutes before. But the New Hampton players were farther away from the quarterback.注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I met Gunter on a cold, wet and unforgettable evening in September. I had planned to fly to Vienna and take a bus to Prague for a conference. Due to a big storm, my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half. I touched down in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got off the plane, I ran like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a second thought. That was when I met Gunter. I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn't heard of the bus station. I thought my pronunciation was the problem, so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked confused. When I was about to give up, Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a heated discussion that lasted for what seemed like a century, Gunter put his phone down and started the car. Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station. Thankfully, there was a long queue (队列) still waiting to board the bus. Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked at me with a bigsmile on his face. "We made it," he said.Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out.At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the message: "Out of order. Sorry."注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
高中课外阅读--英语美文欣赏32(中英双语)
英语美文欣赏32愿得一人心,白首不分离One warm evening many years ago…犹记得多年前,那个让人暖心的夜晚After spending nearly every waking minute with Angel for eight straight days, I knew that I had to tell her just one thing. So late at night, just before she fell asleep, I whispered it in her ear. She smiled –the kind of smile that makes me smile back –and she said, “When I’m seventy-five and I think about my life and what it was like to be young, I hope that I can remember this very moment.整整8天除了睡着其余的时间我都陪着安吉尔,酝酿已久,我想我一定要告诉她一件事。
于是这天夜里,就在她刚刚睡下,我便在她耳边轻声说起来,说完她就笑了,是那种希望得到我回应的笑,接着说道:“真希望我老到75岁的时候,开始回忆,这一刻须臾会变成永恒。
A few seconds later she closed her eyes and fell asleep. The room was peaceful – almost silent. All I could hear was the soft purr of her breathing. I stayed awake thinkin g about the time we’d spent together and all the choices in our lives that made this moment possible. And at some point, I realized that it didn’t matter what we’d done or where we’d gone. Nor did the future hold any significance.很快她就闭上眼睛睡着了,整个房间祥和安静,甚至有些寂静。

My husband, Robert Stone and I were enjoying a peaceful afternoon together in Barbados — our vacation destination. It was sunny and warm, and we decided it was the perfect time to go for an ocean dip. When we were floating around, I said, “What a nice holiday! Let’s swim out, not that far but enough to be out of our depth.” But we hadn’t considered just how strong the current was on that particular day. Although we had visited Barbados several times, we didn’t realize the specific area we floated to was known for its strong current.Noticing that we were floating in the direction of the neighboring beach, I decided to swim toward the beach we came from, against the current. I soon realized that my husband was falling behind and was suddenly too far away to even hear me. I attempted to swim to the shore to get help but struggled to push past the current. I just couldn’t get anywhere and began to scream out for a lifeguard. But no one came after a few minutes.Just then I saw two teenage girls boogie-boarding near the shore. “Help! Help!” I screamed. Hearing my cries for help, the girls swam toward me and helped pull me onto the boogie board. One girl told me to hold ontight and tied the boogie board tether (拴绳) to her wrist. The other girl was by her side for support. They managed to swim to the shore and brought me to safety.Grateful but still scared, I repeated that my husband was stuck farther out in the ocean. I asked for a lifeguard. The girls told me there wasn’t a lifeguard around, and they would go get him. “You can’t do that!” I told them, “Strong current!” The girls reassured me that they were in Barbados as part of a swimming camp and insisted that they were both experienced in the water.注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
高中英语 The Best Kind of Love 最美好的爱阅读素材
The Best Kind of Love 最美好的爱I have a friend who is falling in love. She honestly claims the sky is bluer. Mozart moves her to tears. She has lost 15 pounds and looks like a cover girl."I’m young again!” she shouts exuberantly. As my friend raves on about her new love, I’ve taken a good look at my old one. My husband of almost 20 years, Scott, has gained 15 pounds. Once a marathon runner, he now runs only down hospital halls. His hairline is receding and his body shows the signs of long working hours and too many candy bars. Yet he can still give me a certain look across a restaurant table and I want to ask for the check and head home. When my friend asked me “What will make this love last?” I ran through all the obvious reasons: commitment, shared interest s, unselfishness, physical attraction, communication. Yet there’s more. We still have fun. Spontaneous good times. Yesterday, after slipping the rubber band off the rolled up newspaper, Scott flipped it playfully at me: this led to an all-out war. Last Saturday at the grocery, we split the list and raced each other to see who could make it to the checkout first. Even washing dishes can be a blast. We enjoy simply being together. And there are surprises. One time I came home to find a note on the front door that led me to another note, then another, until I reached the walk-in closet. I opened the door to find Scott holding a “pot of gold” (my cooking kettle) and the “treasure” of a gift package. Sometimes I leave him notes on the mirror and little presents under his pillow. There is understanding. I understand why he must play basketball with the guys. And he understands why, once a year, I must get away from the house, the kids -and even him -to meet my sisters for a few days of nonstop talking and laughing. There is sharing. Not only do we share household worries and parental burdens - we also share ideas. Scott came home from a convention last month and presented me with a thick historical novel. Though he prefers thrillers and science fiction, he had read the novel on the plane. He touched my heart when he explained it was because he wanted to be able to exchange ideas about the book after I’d read it.There is forgiveness. When I’m embarrasssingly loud and crazy at parties, Scott forgives me. When he confe ssed losing some of our savings in the stock market, I gave him a hug and said, “It’s okay. It’s only money.”There is sensitivity. Last week he walked through the door with that look that tells me it’s been a tough day. After he spent some time with the kids, I asked him what happened. He told me about a 60-year-old woman who’d had a stroke. He wept as he recalled the woman’s husband standing beside her bed, caressing her hand. How was he going to tell this husband of 40 years that his wife would probably never recover? I shed a few tears myself. Because of the medical crisis. Because there were still people who have been married 40 years. Because my husband is still moved and concerned after years of hospital rooms and dying patients. There is faith. Last Tuesday a friend came over and confessed her fear that her husband is losing his courageous battle with cancer. On Wednesday I went to lunch with a friend who is struggling to reshape her life after divorce. On Thursday a neighbor called to talk about the frightening effects of Alzheimer’s disease on her father-in-law’s personality. On Friday a childhood friend called long-distance to tell me her father had died. I hung up the phone and thought, this is too much heartache for one week. Through my tears, as I went out to run some errands, I noticed the boisterous orange blossoms of the gladiolus outside my window. I heard the delighted laughter of my son and his friend as they played. I caught sight of a wedding party emerging from a neighbor’s house. The bride, dressed in satin and lace, tossed her bouquet to her cheering friends. That night, I told my husband about these events. We helped each other acknowledge the cycles of life and that the joys counter the sorrows. It was enough to keep us going. Finally, there is knowing. I know Scott will throw his laundry just shy of the hamper every night; he’ll be late to most appointments and eat the last chocolate in the box. He knows that I sleep with a pillow over my head; I’ll lock us out of the house at a regula r basis, and I will also eat the last chocolate.I guess our love lasts because it is comfortable. No, the sky is not bluer: it’s just a familiar hue. We don’t feel particularly young: we’ve experienced too much that has contributed to our growth and wisdom, taking its toll on our bodies, and created our memories.I hope we’ve got what it takes to make our love last. As a bride, I had Scott’s wedding band engraved with Robert Browning’s line “Grow old along with me!” We’re following those instructions.“If anything is real, the heart will make it plain.”.- 1 - / 1。

父爱如山英语作文80
父爱如山英语作文80英文回答:Fatherly love is akin to a towering mountain, an unyielding and steadfast presence in the life of a child. Like the unyielding granite that composes a mountain, a father's love is unwavering, an enduring force that provides strength and support through life's arduous journeys.A father's love is a beacon of guidance, a compass that steers the child's path towards virtue and righteousness. Just as a mountain guides the weary traveler, a father's advice and wisdom guide the child towards a path of success and fulfillment.Like the protective slopes of a mountain that shield the valley from the elements, a father's love safeguards the child from harm. He stands as a bulwark against adversity, his presence a source of solace and security intimes of trouble.A father's love is a tapestry woven with patience and forgiveness. Like the slow but steady erosion that shapes a mountain's contours, a father's love patiently molds the child's character, forgiving mistakes and guiding them towards growth and maturity. The love of a father is a wellspring of inspiration, a catalyst that ignites the child's potential. Just as the towering summit of a mountain inspires awe and wonder, a father's belief in his child's abilities fuels their aspirations and drives them to soar to greater heights. In the twilight of a father's life, the love he has bestowed upon his child becomes a legacy of unwavering support and unwavering affection. Like the enduring presence of a mountain that stands as a testament to the passage of time, a father's love transcends the boundaries of mortality, leaving an indelible mark on the heart of his child.中文回答:父爱如山,在孩子的生命中,是一个不屈不挠、坚定不移的存在。

Like the other half-dozen people of Township 15, crossing the border is a daily occurrence for Albert. The nearby Quebec village of St. Pamphile is where they shop, eat and go to church. There are many such situations in these areas along the largely unguarded 5,530-mile border between Canada and the US-which in some cases actually runs down the middle of streets or through buildings. As a result, Albert says he did not expect any problems three weeks ago when he returned home to the US afterattending church in Canada, as usual. So do humans. When you see an apple or a piece of chocolate you know that these are things you can eat. You can also use other senses when you choose your food. You may like it because it smells good or because it tastes good. You may dislike some types of food because they do not look, smell or taste very nice. Different animals use different senses to find and choose their food. A few animals depend on only one of their senses, while most animals use more than one sense.Although there are many different types of food, some animals spend their lives eating only one type. The giant panda(大熊猫)eats only one particular type of bamboo(竹子). Other animals eat only one type of food even when given the choice. A kind of white butterfly(蝴蝶)will stay on the leaves of a cabbage, even though there are plenty of other vegetables in the garden. However, most animals have a more varied diet(多样化饮食). The bear eats fruits and fish. The fox eats small animals, birds and fruits. The diet of these animals will be different depending on the season.Humans have a very varied diet. We often eat food because we like it and not because it is good for us. In countries such as France and Britain, people eat foods with too much sugar. This makes them overweight, which is bad for their health. Eating too much red meat and animal products, such as butter, can also be bad for the health. Choosing the right food, therefore, has become an area of study in modern life.60. The fruits that made it to the UK were green on the outside and, more often than not, hard with an unpleasant taste within. Then in 1966, the Del Monte Gold pineapple produced in Hawaii first hit our shelves. The new type of pineapple looked more yellowy-gold than green. It was slightly softer on the outside and had a lot of juice inside. But the most important thing about this new type of pineapple was that it was twice as sweet as the hit-and-miss pineapples we had known. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees' nest and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper - a little bird called a honey guide. The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax in the beehives (蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees' nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. Twenty centimeters from her face researchers have placed a white card with two black spots on it. She stares at it carefully. A researcher removes the card and replaces it by another, this time with the spots differently spaced. As the cards change from one to the other, her gaze(凝视) starts to lose its focus - until a third, with three black spots, is presented. Her gaze returns; she looks at it for twice as long as she did at the previous card. Can she tell that the number two is different from three, just 24 hours after coming into the world?Or do newborns simply prefer more to fewer? The same experiment, but with three spots shown before two, shows the same return of interest when the number of spots changes. Perhaps it is just the newness? When slightly older babies were shown cards with pictures of objects (a comb, a key, an orange and so on), changing the number of objects had an effect separate from changing the objects themselves. Could it be the pattern that two things make, as opposed to three? No again. Babies paid more attention to squares moving randomly on a screen when their number changed from two to three, or three to two. The effect even crosses between senses. Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three drumbeats than when they heard just two; likewise(同样地) when the researchers started with drumbeats and moved to spots.60. Written accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries described flocks (群)so large that they the sky for hours. It was calculated that when it population reached its highest point ,they were more than 3billlion passenger pigeons—a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the United States, making it perhaps the most abundant bird in the world. Even as late as 1870 when their numbers had already become smaller, a flock believed to be 1 mile wide and 320 miles (about 515 kilometers) long was seen near Cincinnati.Sadly the abundance of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing. Where the birds were most abundant, people believed there was an ever-lasting supply and killed them by the thousands, Commercial hunters attracted them to small clearings with grain, waited until pigeons had settled to feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large cities and sold in restaurants.By the closing decades of the 19th century ,the hardwood forests where passenger pigeons nested had been damaged by American’s need for wood, which scattered (驱散) the flocks and forced the birds to go farther north, where cold temperatures and storms contributed to their decline. Soon the great flocks were gone, never to be seen again. In 1897, the state of Michigan passed a law prohibiting the killing of passenger pigeons but by then, no sizable flocks had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last confirmed wi pigeon in the United States was shot by a boy in Pike County, Ohio, in 1900. For a time, a few birds survived under human care. 爱和尊重作文英语高中版
爱和尊重作文英语高中版Love and respect are two fundamental values that form the cornerstone of any healthy relationship, be it familial, romantic, or platonic. In this essay, I will explore the significance of love and respect in our lives and how they interplay to create a harmonious society. The Essence of LoveLove is a powerful emotion that can inspire, motivate, and transform individuals and communities. It is the glue that binds us together, providing a sense of belonging and security. In a family setting, love is expressed through care, support, and nurturing. Parents love their children unconditionally, guiding them through life's challenges and celebrating their achievements. This love fosters a sense of self-worth and confidence in the child, equipping them withthe resilience to face the world. In friendships, love manifests as loyalty, trust, and mutual respect. Friends stand by each other through thick and thin, sharing joys and sorrows. This bond of love creates a network of support that is invaluable in times of need. The Power of RespectRespect is the recognition of the intrinsic worth of a person, regardless of their social status, race, or background. It isthe foundation of dignity and equality. Respecting others means acknowledging their rights and feelings, and treating them with kindness and consideration. In a classroom, respect is crucial for creating a conducive learning environment. Teachers who respect their students' opinions and contributions foster an atmosphere of open communication and collaboration. This, in turn, encourages students to express themselves freely and learn from one another. The Interplay of Love and RespectLove and respect are not mutually exclusive; they complement each other. Love without respect can be possessive and controlling, while respect without love can be cold and distant. It is the combination of both that creates a balanced and fulfilling relationship. For instance, in a romantic relationship, love provides the emotional connection, while respect ensures that eachpartner's individuality is valued and protected. This balance allows for growth and understanding, as both partners feel appreciated and cherished.ConclusionIn conclusion, love and respect are essential for personal growth and societal harmony. They are the building blocks of strong relationships and a cohesive community. By practicing love and respect in our daily interactions, we can create aworld that is more understanding, compassionate, and just. It is our collective responsibility to nurture these values and pass them on to future generations, ensuring a legacy of love and respect for all.。

As a young man, A1 was a skilled artist, a potter. He had a wife and two fine sons. One night, his older son developed a severe stomachache. Thinking it was only some common intestinal disorder, neither A1 nor his wife took the condition very seriously. But the malady was actually acute appendicitis and the boy died suddenly that night.Knowing the death could have been prevented if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, A1‘s emotional health deteriorated under the enormous burden of his guilt. To make matters worse his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his 6-year-old younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than A1 could handle, and he turned to alcohol to help him cope. In time A1 became an alcoholic. As the alcoholism progressed, A1 began to lose everything he possessed – his home, his land, his art objects, everything. Eventually A1 died alone in a San Francisco motel room. When I heart of A1‘s death, I reacted with the same disdain the world sh ows for one who ends his life with nothing material to show for it. ―What a complete failure!‖ I thought. ―what a totally wasted life!‖As time went by, I began to re-evaluate my earlier harsh judgment. You see, I knew A1‘s now adult son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring, most loving men I have ever known. I watched Ernie with his children and saw the free flow of love between them. I knew that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere.I hadn‘t heard Ernie talk much about his father. It is so hard to defend an alcoholic. One day I worked up my courage to ask him. ―I‘m really puzzled by soothing‖, I said. ―I know your father was basically the only one to raise you. What on earth did he do that you became such a special person?‖Ernie sat qu ietly and reflected for a few moments. Then he said, ―From my earliest memories as a child until I left home at 18, A1 came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, ‗I love you, son.‘‖Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge A1 as a failure. It stood out among big and old coats. This coat was different from the others. It was thick, with a black wool lining(衬里), soft and well preserved. The coat had a black velvet collar, beautiful tailoring, and a Fifth Avenue label at an unbelievable price: $28.I looked at my son and we both said nothing, but John‘s eyes gleamed(隐约闪光). Dark, woolen topcoats were popular with teenage boys, but they could cost several hundred dollars new. This coat was even better. It had a touch of classic elegance. John slid his arms down into the heavy lining of the sleeves and buttoned the coat. He turned from side to side, eyeing himself in the mirror. The fit was perfect.John wore the coat to school the next day and came home with a grin. ―Did the kids like your coat?‖ I asked. ―They loved it,‖ he said.Over the next few weeks, John changed. He was polite, less argumentative, more thoug htful, and overall much happier. ―Good dinner, mom,‖ he would say every evening. He would generously loan his younger brother his tapes and lecture him on his behaviour. Without a word of objection he would carry in wood for the stove. One day when I suggested that he might start on his homework before dinner, John, who always put things off, said: ―You‘re right. I guess I will.‖ When I mentioned this incident to one of his teachers, she joked that the coat must have changed him.At the library, we ran into a friend who had not seen our children in a long time. ―Could this be John?‖ he asked, looking up to John‘s new height, assessing the cut of his coat and extending his hand.John and I both know we should never mistake a person's clothes for the real person within them. But there is something to be said for wearing a standard of excellence for the world to see, for practicsing standards of excellence in thought, speech, and behavior, and for matching what is on the inside to what is on the outside. Sometim es, watching John leave for school. I‘ve remembered what it felt like to be in the eighth grade-a time when it was as easy to try on different approaches to life as it is to try on a coat.
