Unit 1Rail transportRail transportRail transport is a means of conveyance of passengers and goods by way of wheeled vehicles running on rail tracks. In contrast to road transport, where vehicles merely run on a prepared surface, rail vehicles are also directionally guided by the tracks they run on. Track usually consists of steel rails installed on sleepers/ties and ballast, on which the rolling stock, usually fitted with metal wheels, moves.Rolling stock in railway transport systems generally has lower frictional resistance when compared with highway vehicles, and the passenger and freight cars (carriages and wagons) can be coupled into longer trains. The operation is carried out by a railway company, providing transport between train stations. Power is provided by locomotives which either draw electrical power from a railway electrification system or produce their own power, usually by diesel engines. Most tracks are accompanied by a signalling system. Railways are a safe land transport systemwhen compared to other forms of transport. Railway transport is capable of high levels of passenger and cargo utilization and energy efficiency. The oldest, man-hauled railways date to the 6th century B.C. With the British development of the steam engine, it was possible to construct mainline railways, which were a key component of the industrial revolution. Also, railways reduced the costs of shipping, and allowed for fewer lost goods. The change from canals to railways allowed for "national markets" in which prices varied very little from city to city. Studies have shown that the invention and development of the railway in Europe was one of the most important technological inventions of the late 19th century. In the 1880s, electrified trains were introduced. Starting during the 1940s, the railways in most countries had their steam locomotives replaced by diesel-electric locomotives, with the process being almost complete by 2000. During the 1960s, electrified high-speed railway systems were introduced in Japan and a few other countries.

An Overview of International Business NegotiationsMany economic reviewers assume that international business deals will happen naturally if only the correct governmental policies and structures are in place. Corporate leaders assume that they can simply extend their successful domestic strategies to the international setting. Both of these assumptions are mistaken. Policies alone do not create business dea1s; companies do. Business executives will need to be much better educated about international negotiations in order to make successful deals. International business negotiations are fundamentally different from domestic negotiations, and require a different set of skills and knowledge. There are three factors which are common to all international business negotiations, and which distinguish international business negotiations from domestic ones. The first is that in international negotiations the parties must deal with the laws, policies and political authorities of more than one nation. These laws and policies may be inconsistent, or even directly opposed.A second factor unique to international business negotiations is the presence of different currencies. Different currencies give rise to two problems. Since the relative value of different currencies varies over time, the actual value of the prices or payments set by the contract may vary and result in unexpected losses or gains. The other problem is that each government generally seeks to control the flow of domestic and foreign currencies across their national borders. And unexpected changes in such governmental currency policies can have dramatic effects on international business deals.

Text A How they make you buyBe careful when you go into a supermarket! A lot of clever people are good at making you buy more – and more. It’s 3 o’clock on a Saturday afternoon. You go to a supermarket to buy a few things you need: just coffee, milk and eggs. You take a trolley and that’s your first mistake. Now you won’t feel the weight of the things you buy, so you might buy more. And the trolley is so big and deep! You go into the store and first you pass beautiful flowers and plants. Then you see the fruit and vegetables. Those red, green and yellow peppers look so delicious and fresh. And they’re on special offer. Perhaps you’ll take just one packet. And then you come to the bread counter. Oh, that fresh bread smells so good! Much better than yesterday’s bread at home. Perhaps you’ll just buy ... And so it goes on.Notes from the marketing managers1Displays of fruit, vegetables and flowers just inside a store are common. They give customers a feeling of healthy living before they reach the other ordinary items.2Special offers near the entrance help shoppers start shopping. And when the first item is in the trolley, there will soon be more.3The store is often painted green. This gives shoppers that natural feeling.Bakery, fish and delicatessen counters also offer fresh, healthy goods.4Many large supermarkets now sell other goods, for example clothes and electrical products.5Milk, eggs or butter are always at the back of the shop. So shoppers must pass many things that are nice but that they don’t really need.6Big brand names and items like precooked meals are very profitable, so they are often clearly displayed to get the customer’s attention.7Magazines and sweets are at the checkouts where shoppers have to wait. And that is where they see the information about the other services the supermarket offers such as cheap travels or mobile phones.8Paying with the supermarket’s own credit card is so easy. Buy now, pay later. A lot of supermarkets give you loyalty cards. You can collect points and with the points you can get some money back or free gifts. So please come back very soon.

Text AYou are hereRead the text and find out why Max went the wrong way.It was easy for Max to get to Liverpool Station. He enjoyed the 300-mile train journey through the countryside, but now came the difficult bit. How could he find the youth hostel? The guidebook said it was in an old warehouse down by the docks. The address was Tabley Street with the postcode L18EE.He asked at the tourist information office opposite the station. The woman behind the counter gave him a map of the city and said it was only a 10-minute walk. He could see the station on the map and River Mersey with the docks. It looked easy enough to find. He started to walk, but then it began to rain. After half an hour he decided to ask somebody for directions. He stopped a man in the street.“Excuse me, can you tell me the way to the youth hostel?”But the man answered, “Sorry, I’m a stranger here myself.”He then asked a policeman, “Excuse me, do you know where the youth hostel is?”“Well, the easiest way is if you go to the station. It is only a 10-minute walk from there. Ah, you have a map. Let’s see. We are here. The railway station is there on the corner of Station Road and Main Street. Go straight down Station Road past the cinema. Then you will come to a crossing with traffic lights. Turn left at the traffic lights and straight on at the roundabout. The youth hostel is in front of you. You really can’t miss it.”“Thanks a lot for your help.”“Don’t mention it,” said the policeman.Max looked at the map and realised that he had looked at it upside down. He hadn’t turned left at the traffic lights; he had turned right! And instead of going straight on at the roundabout, he had turned left.A very wet Max went back to the station and this time he was very careful not to take a wrong way. Five minutes later he was standing in front of the youth hostel.

They want to introduce Ling to some of their neighbours. Kate also invites some of her friends from school. Before the barbecue, Ling is a little nervous. “What do I say when you introduce me to somebody?” she asks Kate.“Don’t worry, Ling,” Kate says. “It’s very easy. When I introduce you to an older person, for example Grant Summers, our next-door neighbour, I say, ‘Grant, this is Sung Ling from Shanghai. She’s my exchange partner.’ And then I say to you, ‘Ling, this is Grant Summers. He’s our next-door neighbour.’ And you just say, ‘How do you do, Mr Summers? It’s nice to meet you.’”“Yes, but do I shake hands or just smile?”“Well, with an older person you can shake hands and smile. But remember that in America, we like a firm handshake.”“Okay, Kate,” Ling says, “but what about when I want to introduce myself? Maybe you won’t be there.”“Well, if it’s an older person – Grant’s wife, Susan, for example – you just offer your hand and say, ‘How do you do? I’m Sung Ling from Shanghai.

Unit 2

Unit 4

了解来宾国家的习俗,并且准备好及时去迎接;
确保明白来宾的访问目的和他们期望的行程路线;
联系即将访问的部门;
给来宾提供一些建议以便他们能够更好地利用时间;
▪在飞机场或火车站迎接来宾;
▪制定一份包括会面、开会和实地考察的日程表;
