20页Each Indian tribe had a different language. Many Indians never learned any language except their own. Do you know how Indians from different tribes talked to each other? They had two ways to talk without sound. One way was by sign language; the other way by signals.Sign language is a way of talking by using signs. Indians used sign language when they met strangers. In this way, they could find out whether the stranger was a friend or an enemy. In the Indian sign language, signs were made with the hands. One sign meant "man". Another meant "horse". To tell the time of day when something happened, an Indian pointed to the sky. He showed where the sun had been at the time.Indians usually used signals when they wanted to send messages to someone far away. To make signals, an Indian might use a pony. He might use a blanket. Or he might use smoke, a mirror or fire arrows. To signal that he had seen many animals, an Indian rode his pony in a large circle. Sometimes the Indian gave a signal like this and then went away to hide. This meant that there was danger. The blanket signal was visible from far away. An Indian held the corners of a blanket in his hands. Then he began to swing the blanket from side to side in front of him. An Indian could send many different signals with his blanket. He could also send many signals with a mirror. He usually used the mirror to warn someone of danger. Or he attempted to get the attention of a person far away. But he also used it to send messages in code. Of course, mirrors could be used only when the sun was shining. At night, Indians used fire arrows for signaling. An Indian also sent signals with smoke. He made a small fire of dry wood. Then he put grass or green branches on it. He held a blanket over the fire for a minute. When he removed the blanket from the fire, there was a cloud of smoke. The number of clouds of smoke told his message in code. Now you can see that Indians didn't need to learn each other's language. They could talk to one another by using signals or sign language.61页In his 1979 book, The Sinking Ark, biologist Norman Myers estimated that 1 of more than 100 human-caused extinctions occur each day, and that one million species 2 lost by the century's end. Yet there is little evidence of 3 that number of extinctions. For example, only seven species on the 4 .species list have become extinct 5 the list was created in 1973.Bio- 6 is an important value, according to many scientists. Nevertheless, the supposed 7 extinction rates bandied about are achieved by multiplying unknowns by 8 to get imponderables. Many estimates, for instance, rely a great deal on a "species-area 9 ”which predicts that twice as many species will be found on 100 square miles 10 on ten square miles. The problem is that species are distributed 11 , so which parts of a forest are destroyed may be as important as 12 .13 ,says Ariel Lugo, director of the International Institute of Tropical Forestry in Puerto Rico, "Biologists who predict high extinction rates 14 the resiliency of nature".One of the main causes of extinctions is 15 . According to the consultative Group onInternational Agricultural Research, what destroys 16 trees is not commercial logging, but "poor farmers who have no other 17 for feeding their families than slashing and burning a 18 of forest".In countries that practice modern 19 agriculture, forests are in no danger. In 1920, U.S. forests covered 732 million acres. Today they cover 737 million. Forests in Europe 20 from 361 million to 482 million acres between 1950 and 1990.1. 2) Use a dash or dashes to emphasize nonrestrictive elements; Dashes may be used in place of commas or parentheses to set off and emphasize nonrestrictive elements. They are especially useful when these elements are internally punctuated. Be sure to use a pair of dashes when the element interrupts a main clause.
3) Use a dash to set off introductory series and concluding series and explanations. Introductory series: Shortness of breath, skin discoloration or the sudden appearance of moles, persistent indigestion, the presence of small lumps– all these may signify cancer. Concluding series: The patient undergoes a battery of test-- CAT scan, bronchoscopy, perhaps even biopsy.

By a conscious effort of the mind, we can stand aloof from actions and their consequences; and all things, good and bad, go by us like a torrent. A You would normally use a comma with a coordinator such as "and" or "but" between main clauses. But a semicolon makes a sentence easier to read if the main clauses contain commas or are grammatically complicated.
The uses of dash
1) Use a dash or dashes to indicate shifts and hesitations. Shift in tone: The novel-- if one can call it that-appeared in 1994. Unfinished Thought: If the book had a plot-- but a plot would be conventional. Hesitation in dialogue: "Well, by--" Blackburn hesitated and for an answer pointed to the table.
The uses of colon
One soul food chef has a solution: "Soul food doesn't have to be greasy to taste good… Instead of using ham hocks to flavor beans, I use smoked turkey wings. The soulful, smoky taste remains, but without all the fat of pork." (long or formal quotation) It should be noted that depending on your preference, a complete sentence after the colon may begin with a capital letter of a small letter. Just be consistent throughout an essay.
The uses of colon
Use a colon to introduce a concluding explanation, series, appositive, or long or formal quotation.
Sport at any age are beneficial: they keep your pulses hopping. (explanation) At least three soul food dishes are familiar to most Americans: fried chicken, barbecued spareribs, and sweet potatoes. (series) Soul food has one disadvantage: fat. (appositive)

A coordinate construction is a sequence of semanticallyrelated grammatical units that are similar in form, equal in rank of structure, identical in function and are connected only by coordinators. Coordinate constructions may be on different ranks in grammatical hierarchy; they may be a sequence of coordinated words, phrases, or clauses. When a sequence contains three or more coordinate items, the series is usually written with commas following each item except the final one which is preceded by a coordinator (usually "and" or "or").

Besides the comma, the semicolon and the colon can also function as coordinating devices; the semicolon coordinates by contrast, and the colon by amplification. Semantically considered, English coordinators can be described under three headings: coordinators denoting "addition", represented by "and"; coordinators denoting "alternation", represented by "or"; and coordinators denoting "contrast", represented by "but".
