And before long all these strange sights were as familiar to him as the faces of his own town’s residents. Each one told its story to him so plainly that, as before he had learned the secrets of the fields and woods, so now he learned men and m en’s interests that make up the great world. And he learned these lessons so well that when he came to write his plays, he made such use of them as no writer ever made before or since; for it is the use of this knowledge of the world, combined with his own genius, thatmakes Shakespeare the greatest dramatist that has ever lived. 24. However, due to their high price, they have failed to catch on until now. Recently, Ikea has brought out Bekant convertible (可变换的) standing desk that can become a normal desk at the touch of a button. The $500 adjustable desk can transform from a standard desk to a standing one, and Ikea hopes it could make the standing desk mainstream. Experts say that changing from a seated to a standing desk can improve productivity. Similar desks have become a common sight at tech firms such as Google, where some employees have even installed treadmill (跑步机) and bicycle desks.教育配套资料K12教育配套资料K12 The d esk is not the first “convertible” on the market. As early as 2013, Stir Kinect brought out an adjustable desk. The $3,890 Stir Kinect desk has a motor to raise and lower itself, changing it into a standing desk or a traditional desk. The desk can even be programmed to move up and down slightly, making it appear to take a gentle breath to remind the user to change their positions. To move between sitting and standing positions, owners simply double tap on the screen. The desk can learn the user’s preferences over time and suggest the best seating position. The Stir Kinect desk was created by a team of ex-Apple and Disney engineers. It has a built-in touch screen to control and track movement, and can tell users exactly how many calories they burn by standing during their working day. It also has devices containing power points and USB ports for charging phones, to keep cables hidden.“ Ikea’s height -adjustable desk is great for opening up the lower end of the market, ’’ said JP Labrosse, founder and CEO of St ir.28. D Airbags, now found in almost every vehicle, have saved countless lives and largely reduced the severity of injuries in crashes. Similar technology could greatly reduce broken hips (髋部) resulting from a fall, something most seniors fear. Dr. Robert Buckman and his start-up company, Active Protective in Allentown, Pennsylvania, has developed a promising solution, a wearable airbag that can protect hip bones in the event of a fall. The idea was the result of Dr. Buckman’s years as a doctor at Temple University. He noticed how many elderly people were being brought into hospitals with broken hip due to falls, and how they often never completely recovered from the injuries. He started to ask what he could do for these people, and that was when he started trying to figure out whether there was a way of helping people who were at the highest risk of falling and suffering these kinds of injuries. The device is worn much like a regular belt, but on the outside of the clothing, and it includes sensors that monitor the movement of hips. If the device detects that the person, is falling, an airbag opens before the person hits the ground, cushioning the fall. When the wearer hits the ground, the bag reduces the force to the hip bones by 90 percent, enough to avoid the教育配套资料K12教育配套资料K12 majority of hip injuries. With one out of every three people aged 65 and older suffering serious falls each year, Active Protective has a big market for its wearable device. It also has the potential to sizably reduce hip - related health care expenses: Hip injuries among the elderly cost the US health care system in 2012 $30 billion, w hich doesn’t include the long -term care expenses associated with the high percentage of patients that can no longer live independently.32. What is the purpose of the Active Protective’s airbag?A. To avoid hip injuries among seniors.B. To protect seniors from car accidents.C. To help seniors with their daily nursing.D. To help doctors deal with serious injuries.33. What inspired Dr. Robert Buckman to make the device?A. A report on seniors’ health.B. A serious fall he experienced.C. His work experiences as a doctor.D. Suggestions of seniors at Temple University.34. How does the device mainly work?A. By predicting road conditions.B. By speeding up bone recovery.C. By reducing the effects of falling.D. By preventing people from failing.35. What does the author think of the Active Protective’s airbag?A. It still needs improving.B. It has a promising future.C. It may encourage seniors to do exercise.D. It may increase America’s spend on seniors.第二节 (共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

The robot took part in class discussions, gave a presentation with a student partner and participated in a debate with students from another institution. Before becoming a student, Bina48 appeared as a guest speaker in Barry s classesto go college, a desire that Barry and his students enthusiastically supported.Rather than enroll Bina48 in his Robot Ethics: Philosophy of Emerging Technologies course,Barry suggested that Bina48 should take his course Philosophy of Love instead.Love is a concept Bina48 doesn't understand, said Barry. Therefore the challenge would be for Barry and his students to teach Bina48 what love is."Some interesting things happened in the class," said Barry. He said that his students thought it would be straightforward to teach Bina48 about love, which, after all, is "fairly simple - it's a feeling," said Barry. But the reality was different.Bina48 ended up learning "31 different versions of love," said Barry, highlighting some of the challenges humans may face when working artificial intelligence in future.Bina48 participated in class discussions via Skype and also took part in a class debate about love and conflict with students from West Point.Bina48's contribution to the debate was filmed and posted on YouTube. It was judged that Bina48 and NDNU classmates were the winners of this debate. In the next decade, Barry hopes Bina48 might become complex enough to teach aclass, though he says he foresees robots being used to better the teaching and learning experience, rather than replacing instructors completely.24.What was Bina48's performance like in class?___A.Extraordinary.B.Insignificant.C.Far-reaching.D.Unattractive.25.What does the underlined word "addressing" in paragraph 3 probably mean?___ A.Dealing with.B.Consulting with.C.Giving a speech to.D.Sending a letter to.26.What can we learn from the passage?___A.It was interesting for Bina48to learn about love.B.It was quite easy for Bina48to learn about love.C.Artificial intelligence may somehow be superior to man.D.Humans can launch a challenge to artificial intelligence.27.What does Barry think of the future development of Bina48?___ A.It will surely be able to serve as a teacher.B.It will be able to promote learning and teaching.C. the same rate at which a human's ability to perform the same task declines."Anyone who has spent time working with sheep will know that they are intelligent, individual animals who are able to recognize their handlers," said Professor Jenny Morton, who led the Cambridge study."We've shown with our study that sheep have advanced face-recognition abilities, comparable with those of humans and monkeys."Recognizing faces is one of the most important social skills for human beings, and some disorders of the brain, including Huntington's disease, affect this ability."Sheep are long-lived and have brains that are similar in size and complexity to those of some monkeys. That means they can be useful models to help us understand disorders of the brain, such as Huntington's disease, that develop over a long time and affect cognitive abilities. Our study gives us another way to monitor how these abilities change," Morton said.32.According to the new research, what's unusual about sheep?___ A.They have large brains.B.They can recognize their owners.C.They can tell animals from humans.D.They can recognize human faces from photographs.33.How did the researchers train the sheep?___A.By guiding them to follow their handlers.B.By giving food rewards.C.By showing photos of humans and monkeys by turns.D.By showing photos of famous people.34.What can be inferred from the passage?___A.Sheep have a higher face-recognition ability than monkeys.B.The sheep's face-recognition ability stays the same when shown photos at any angle.C.The new discovery is beneficial to the study of cognitive ability changes.D.The sheep's face-recognition ability may prevent some disorders of the brain.35.What's the best title of the passage?___A.A New discovery about Sheep.B.How Sheep Recognize Each Other.C.A Wonderful Scientist.D.The Life of Sheep.第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

I’ve had too many disappointing meals and paid too much money for them! At one point, fed up with my complaint, a friend suggested I open my own rest aurant. Impossible, I though t. But then I heard about supper clubs.” Supper clubs are a mixture of a restaurant and a dinner party—you go to a stranger’s house and he/she cooks dinner for you. Like a restaurant, you pay for your food, but like a dinner party, you eat at the same table as other people. They are advertised through social-networking sites with a menu and little information about where the supper club is until just before the meal.“It’s like running a secret restaurant for one night,” says Cassie. “The next mornin g, I set the tables and chairs aside. I put the TV back and it’s my living room again.”Cassie opens her “restaurant” for people about once a month, and she really enjoys the evenings she’s had so far. She uses fresh, local ingredients and a typical meal costs about the same as a takeaway---much less than a restaurant meal. So how doesshe make money out of it?“I don’t,” says Cassie. “In fact, at first I was worried about losing money on my club. I’m good at cooking but my maths is terrible! But I was surprised by how cheaply I could make a good meal. This isn’t about money. It’s about a different eating experience.”And what about inviting complete strangers into her house? Was Cassie ever nervous about that?“Not at all,” she says. “Almost everyone a t the supper club is just interested in having a good meal with other interesting people”.4. Why did Cassie decide to open her own restaurant finally?A. To earn a livingB. To satisfy her friend’s needsC. To make friends with strangersD. To cook cheap and good meals for others5. What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 2 refer to?A. Dinner partiesB. Supper clubsC. Fresh ingredientsD. Invitations to dinner6. We can know that Cassie’s restaurant __________.A. serves meals for freeB. only serves takeawaysC. is only open to her friendsD. is only open in the evening7. How does Cassie feel about her restaurant now?A. WorriedB. ContentC. AnnoyedD. SensitiveCMany people believe that language belongs to human beings. However, cats have developed a language not for each other, but for the human begins who have them as pets. When communicating with each other, cats “talk” with a system of signals. Their tails, rather than any kind of “speech”, act as an important way to express themselves. They also touch each other to express their feelings. With other cats, they will use their voices only to express pain. Unbelievable, all of that changes when a human walks into the room. Cats use many different kinds of vocal(声音的)expressions when they communicate with a person. Since these vocal expressionsare not used to communicate with other cats, it seems that cats developed this “language” to communicate with their huma n owners. This fact is shown more clearly when watching rooms that have only one cat and those with several cats. An only cat is usually very vocal, since the only creature(动物)around with whom the cat can communicate is its owner. Cats with other cats, though, are much quieter. If they want to have a conversation, they only need go to other cats and communicate in their natural way.Since cats learned to meow(喵喵叫)for the only purpose of communicating with human owners should take the time to learn what their different meows mean. If an owner knows, to name just a few examples, with meow means the cat is hungry, which means the cat wants to be petted, and which means the cat wants to have a little “conversation”, the relationship between cat and owner w ill be closer.8. 【配套K12】2019届高三英语上学期第一次月考试题3

黑龙江省大庆实验中学2019届高三英语上学期第一次月考试题说明:答题时间100分钟,总分120分。

第一部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AThe Origins of Famous BrandsOur lives are full of brand names and trademarked products that we use every day. Although many brand names are simple acronyms (首字母缩略词) or versions of their founders names, some of the companies we trust every day actually have fascinating and surprising back stories.StarbucksIt seems fitting that the most famous coffee brand in the world would take its name from one of the wor ld’s greatest works of literature. The inspiration for the name of the coffeehouse came from Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. The founders’ original idea was to name the company after the Captain Ahab’s ship, but they eventually decided that Pequot wasn’t a great name for coffee, so they chose Ahab’s first mate, Starbucks, as the name instead.GoogleGoogle was originally called Backrub, for it searched for links in every corner of the Web. In 1997, when the founders of the company were searching for a new name showing a huge amount of data for their rapidly improving search technology, a friend suggested the word “googol”. When a friend tried to register the new domain (域) name, he misspelled “googol”as “google”.NikeOriginally founded as a distributor for Japanese running shoes, the company was originally named BRS, or Blue Ribbon Sports. In 1971, BRS introduced its own soccer shoe, a model called Nike, which is also the name for the Greek goddess of victory. In 1978, the company officially renamed itself as Nike, Inc.The right name is essential to a company’s success, and a great origin story is just as important as a great product. An attractive origin story is one more thing that keeps customers guessing, wondering, and buying its products.1. What is t he name of the Captain Ahab’s ship?A. Moby DickB. StarbucksC. PequotD. Herman Melville2. Why did the founders of the Google want to change its name?A. They mistook their name.B. They wanted new customers.C. The company’s original name was too long.D. The company’s search technology was improving rapidly.3. Where does the importance of the origin story of one company lie in?A. It can change the company’s image.B. It can add myth to the company.C. It explains the development of the company to customers.D. It makes customers imagine and purchase its goods.BI can still remember it as if it happened yesterday. I was a college freshman and had stayed up most of the night before laughing and talking with friends. Now just before my first class of the day my eyelids (眼皮) were feeling heavier and heavier and my head was drifting down to my desk to make my textbook a pillow. A few minutes’ nap time before class couldn’t hurt, I thought.Boom! I lifted my head immediately and my eyes opened wider than saucers. I looked around with my heart beating quickly trying to find the cause of the noise. My young professor was looking back at me with a mischievous, boyish smile on his face. He had intentionally dropped the pile of text books he was carrying onto the desk. “Good morning!” he said, still smiling. “I’m glad to see everyone is awake. Now let’s get started.”For the next hour I wasn't sleepy at all. It wasn’t from the shock of my professor’s textbook alarm clock either. Inst ead, it was from the attractivediscussion he led. With knowledge and good humor, he made the material come alive. His lecturing was full of both wisdom and kindness. And the enthusiasm and joy that he taught with were contagious (有感染力的). I left the classroom not only wide awake, but a little smarter and a little better as well.I learned something far more important than not sleeping in class that day too. What I’ve learned is that if you are going to do something in this life, do it well, do it with joy, and make it an expression of your love. What a glorious place this world would be if all of us did our job joyously and well! What a beautiful world we could create if every doctor, teacher, musician, cook, waitress, poet, miner, farmer, and laborer made t heir work an expression of their love! Don’t sleepwalk your way through life then. Wake up! Let your love fill your work and your soul. Life is too short to live it badly.4. What did the author want to do just before his first class of the day?A. Talk with his friends.B. Take a short sleep.C. Get his eyes examined.D. Stay away from the class.5. The underlined word “mischievous” in Paragraph 2 probably means “”.A naughty B. serious C. sensitive D. dishonest6. What else did the author learn that day?A. Students should not sleep in class but respect their teachers。

AI’m learning to drive in Switzerland. I think it will be a good idea to learn now because I have plenty of free time and am earning a little money to pay for lessons.I never learnt when I lived in the UK, so luckily driving on the “wrong” side isn’ta problem. However, there are a lot of rules to remember. When you see a road to your right and there are no white lines on the ground, the cars to your right have the right to go before your car and you have to stop for them. In practice, lots of people forget this and cars either wait for each other while both drivers try to remember what to do, or beep (鸣喇叭) at each other if both try to go at the same time! When you drive round a roundabout, you should check all your mirrors. To rememberhow to do this, I often count them aloud—one, two, three—then a second glance at your blind spot when you’re in the roundabout. One friend came driving with me and after about an hour asked why on earth I was counting. He had passed his test so long ago, he couldn’t remember ever having to check three mirrors!Driv ing still seems scary to me so I drive quite slowly. I also don’t know the countryside roads very well and don’t know what’s coming up round the comer or over the next hill. I drive slowly so I feel safe, but my driving instructor tells me to speed up or cars will bump into me from behind or try to overtake somewhere dangerous. So driving slowly is just as dangerous as driving fast!I’m not a very practical person so learning to drive has been a challenge. I don’t have a lot of confidence and find it quite demotivating to do something that doesn’t come naturally to me. To make driving more fun and interesting, I learn in Swiss German, so my instructor gives me instructions in Swiss. This way I’ve tricked myself into enjoying driving and hopefully will pass the test!21.What can be inferred from the first paragraph?A. It isn’t a proper time for the author to take driving lessons now.B. Driving on the “wrong side” doesn’t influence the author..C. The author was too poor to pay for driving lessons in Switzerland.D. It is easy for the author to get confused about the driving rules in Switzerland.22.The author often co unts “one, two, three” aloud when driving round a roundabout to ________.A. remind himself to check the mirrorsB. speed upC. overtake somewhere dangerousD. make driving more interesting23.What does the underlined word “demotivating” in Paragraph 5 mean?A. Encouraging.B. Amazing.C. Exciting.D. Discouraging.24.What is the text mainly about?A. Driving speed.B. Strict driving instructors.C. Anecdotes of my driving experience.D. Complicated driving rules in Switzerland.BOver the past century, an alarming number of animals have become endangered or even extinct. Below are some animals whose numbers have been rapidly dropping in recent years.Panda BearOne of the biggest reasons contributing to the decline in the panda species is the destruction of its natural habitat. Farmers in China have gradually been claiming more and more of the land. As a result, pandas are forced to move away to places where it is hard to find bamboo for food.Green TurtleThe green sea turtle species has survived for several millions of years, so you might wonder why it’s only becoming endangered now. A major cause is the change in climate and temperature, which both affect the hatching rates of turtle eggs. Climate changes also cause violent weather and rising water levels to flood areas where turtles usually go to lay their eggs. Apart from this, oil spills and other poisonous pollution, as well as increased fishing activities can cause sickness, or even death to the green turtles.CheetahCheetahs are famous for being the fastest animal on land but even they can’t run from some of the larger threats that have harmed them. Like the panda bears, cheetahs have gradually been losing their natural homes due to humans claiming land and developing in those areas. To make matters even worse, smaller animals move away when these areas are occupied, which means that the cheetah has less food! Don’t forget that other large animals, such as lions, are also fighting for any food that they can find, so occasionally young cheetahs end up as prey too.Indian ElephantElephants are extremely intelligent animals and also the largest mammals that live on land. Sadly, in Asia many elephants were killed so that people could remove their tusks to use as decorative objects. While this practice has been banned now, some people still illegally continue. Forests in India have also been steadily destroyed and elephants are sometimes killed when they end up on human territory.25.Humans’ increasing demand for land doesn’t affect the number of ________.A. Indian elephantsB. cheetahsC. panda bearsD. green turtles26.We can save the largest mammals living on land by ________.A. planting more bamboosB. helping them find matesC. stopping hunting themD. preventing poisonous pollution27.The living conditions of the fastest animal on land become worse because ________.A. forests have been destroyedB. they are threatened by humans and larger animalsC. people are fond of hunting wild animalsD. no law bans people from removing their tusksCEveryone knows that if a dog’s ears are up and its tail is wagging energetically, it is definitely pleased to see you. but now scientists using a robot have found that the way dogs use their tails is more complicated th an we thought, and that dogs which w ag them to the left may he more friendly. The animal psychologists discovered that when real dogs approached a life-sized robot dog, they were less cautious about it when it was wagging its tail to the left, while if it was wagging its tail to the right, far fewer dogs approached it in a confident manner. In the first experiments, 56 percent of the animals approached the model without hesitation when the tail was wagged to the left, while only 21 percent did so in the other situation. When the researchers excluded(排除)owners from being present, the result were: 31 percent of the dogsapproached continuously when the tail was wagging to the left, while only 18 percent did so when it was on the right.Animal psychologist Roger Mugford said it added to the growing evidence that doeswere even more complicated comm unicators than the animals more closely related to man such as monkeys. He said, “W e know that dogs, in a sense, have languages, but it is more complicated because it is not just them wagging their tails, but also giving out chemical displays.”He adds, “The research confirms earlier studies suggesting that dogs, like humans, had a left-side preference. If you are going to present a signal to a dog, it is sensible to put it on your left-hand side because that is where dogs, unlike most other animals, tend to look. It is another example of the similarity betwe en dogs and humans. They are a lot more human than we give them credit for.”28.What does it tell us if a dog wags its tail to the right?A. It was very energeticB. It was in a bad moodC. It might be unfriendlyD. It must be confident29.What can be inferred from the second paragraph?A. Some dogs approach the robot dog confidentlyB. Most dogs were afraid to approach the robot dogC. Some dogs lack confidence with their owners presentD. Dog owners may influence the behaviour of their pets30.What can we learn from animal psyc hologist’s experiments?A. Dogs can communicate more than human beingsB. Dogs have more complicated emotions than monkeysC. Dogs’ tail-wagging conveys more information than previously believedD. Dogs’ intelligence can be much higher than any other kind of animal31.What can we infer from Roger Mugfords words?A. The Left-side preference should be studied furtherB. Dogs have more in common with humans than we thinkC. No other animals show the left-side preference except dogsD. Dogs have a more complicated language than we people doDThe Amazing Penguin RescueThe summer of 2016, the ship MV Treasure sunk, creating an oil spill. Thirteenhundred tons of fuel oil were flowing right in the middle of the African Penguins’ habitat. Soon the oil covered about 20,000 penguins. Without swift help, the seabirds would have no chance for survival. Volunteers were showing up by the thousands and I also took part in what was the largest animal rescue operation ever.A warehouse was turned into a rescue center near the habitat and hundreds of pools were built to hold about 100 oiled birds each. When walking into the center, I couldn’t believe my ears. I had expected to walk into a chorus of honking and squawking(叫声). Instead, the center sounded like a library. The penguins were dead silent. My heart ached for the painful birds. Cleaning them all seemed like an impossible task. But we had to carry on like doctors in an emergency room. There was no time for doubt. Cleaning oil off a penguin wasn’t easy. Even with more t han 12,500 volunteers, it took a month to bathe all 20,000 birds at the center. While volunteers were busy bathing the oiled penguins, another crisis (危机) was developing. Oil from the spill had started moving north. Tens of thousands of penguins were in th e oil’s path. But we already had our hands full with 20,000 recovering birds. If any more birds were oiled, we wouldn’t have enough resources to save them. One researcher came up with an idea: What if the penguins were temporarily moved out of harm’s way? Experts decided to have a try. Volunteers rounded up the penguins and released them 500 miles away. The hope was that by the time the seabirds swam home, the oil would be gone. The plan worked! Another 20,000 penguins were saved. The entire penguin rescue took about three months. More than 90% of the oiled penguins were successfully returned to the wild. Looking back on the rescue, I am still amazed by the work of the volunteers. What I could hardly believe was that we accomplished an impossible task.32.The African penguins were in danger because of ________.A. a knock by a shipB. a spill of oilC. a change of habitatsD. a lack of help33.When walking into the rescue center, the author felt ________.A. ambitiousB. hopelessC. shockedD. inspired34.The crisis was ended by ________.A. stopping the flow of the oilB. cleaning the polluted habitatC. asking more volunteers to helpD. moving the penguins from home35.The author mainly intends to tell us that ________.A. many hands make great workB. where there is a will there is a wayC. the future of wildlife is in our handsD. unite to make the earth pollution-free第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
