Unit 3 The PresentThey say that blood is thicker than water, that our relatives are more important to us than others. Everyone was so kind to the old lady on her birthday. Surely her daughter would make an even bigger effort to please her?1 It was the old lady's birthday.2 She got up early to be ready for the post from the second floor flat she could see the postman when he came down the street, and the little boy from the ground floor brought up her letters on the rare occasions when anything came.3 Today she was sure there would be something. Myra /'maira/ wouldn't forget her mother's birthday, even if she seldom wrote at other times. Of course Myra was busy. Her husband had been made Mayor, and Myra herself had got a medal for her work for the aged.4 The old lady was proud of Myra, but Enid/’i:nid/ was the daughter she loved. Enid had never married, but had seemed content to live with her mother, and teach ina primary school round the corner.5 One evening, however, Enid said, "I've arranged for Mrs. Morrison to look after you for a few days, Mother. Tomorrow I have to go into hospital--just a minor operation. I'll soon be home. "6 In the morning she went, but never came back--she died on the operating table. Myra came to the funeral, and in her efficient way arranged for Mrs. Morrison to come in and light the fire and give the old her breakfast.7 Two years ago that was, and since then Myra had been to see her mother three times, but her husband never.8 The old lady was eighty today. She had put on her best dress. Perhaps-perhaps Myra might come. After all, eighty was a special birthday; a nother decade lived or endured just as you chose to look at it.9 Even if Myra did not come, she would send a present. The old lady was sure of that. Two spots of color brightened her cheeks. She was excited like a child. She would enjoy her day.10 Yesterday Mrs. Morrison had given the flat an extra clean, and today she had brought a card and a bunch of marigolds when she came to do the breakfast. Mrs. Grant downstairs had made a cake, and in the afternoon she was going down there to tea. The little boy, Johnnie, had been up with a packet of mints, and said he wouldn't go out to play until the post had come.11 "I guess you'll get lots and lots of presents, "he said." I did last week when I was six. "12 What would she like? A pair of slippers perhaps. Or a new cardigan. A cardigan would be lovely. Blue's such a pretty color. Jim had always liked her in blue. Or a table lamp. Or a book, a travel book, with pictures, or a little clock, with clear black numbers. So many lovely things.13 She stood by the window, watching. The postman turned round the corner on his bicycle. Her heart beat fast. Johnnie had seen him too and ran to the gate.14 Then clatter, clatter up the stairs. Johnnie knocked at her door. "Granny, granny, "he shouted, "I've got your post: "15 He gave her four envelopes. Three were unsealed cards from old friends. The fourth was sealed, in Myra's writing. The old lady felt a pang of disappointment. "No parcel, Johnnie?" "No granny."16 Maybe the parcel was too large to come by letter post. That was it. It would come, later by parcel post. She must be patient.17 Almost reluctantly, she tore the envelope open. Folded in the card was a piece of paper. Written on the card was a message under the printed Happy Birthday-- Buy yourself something nice with the cheque, Myra andHarold.18 The cheque fluttered to the floor like a bird with a broken wing. Slowly the old lady stooped to pick it up. Her present, her lovely present. With trembling fingers she tore it into little bits.New Wordsrare / a.not happening often 罕见的;不常发生的mayor / n.chief official of a city or town 市长content / a.satisfied; pleased 满意的;高兴的primary / a.first; earliest 首要的;最初的arrange / vi. make preparations; plan 作安排,筹划minor / a. not serious or important 较小的;次要的operate / vi. cut the body in order to set right or remove a diseased part 开刀,动手术operating table n. a special table in a hospital, where operations are done 手术台efficient / a. able to plan and work well 效率高的endure /vt. bear (pain, suffering, etc.) 忍受,忍耐brighten / vt. make bright or brighter 使发光;使发亮extra / a. additional 额外的,外加的确bunch /n. things of the same kind that are tied together (一)束,(一)串mint / n. 薄荷糖slipper / n. 拖鞋clatter / n. a number of rapid short knocking sounds 咔嗒声unsealed /a.未密封的pang / n. sudden, sharp pain 剧痛parcel / n.包裹reluctantly / ad. unwillingly 不情愿地,勉强地flutter / vt. move quickly to and fro in the air 飘动stoop / vi.bend the body forwards and downwards 弯腰Phrases & Expressionsat other times on other occasions 在别的时候;平时round/around the corner very near in distance or time 在附近;即将来临after all in spite of everything; it must be remembered 毕竟,终究。

新视野大学英语3考试中的阅读理解unit3Directions:Read the following passage(s) carefully and do the multiple-choice questions.Questions 51 to 55 are based on the same passage or dialog. One day, when I was on my way to my high school, another young man who was walking past me decided to show off in front of his friends and show them how “manly” he really was. Without saying a word, he walked up to me and began punching me. Once I began fighting back, he pulled out a gun and pointed it straight at me. After seeing this, I ran as fast as I could towards my school, hearing the group of boys laughing badly behind me. While most people hold the belief that inner-city schools can only hinder the learning process, I would argue that these schools provide experiences which enrich one’s education simply because of their location (位置) in the city.To clarify this point, I must first describe the ways in which Saint Ignatius High School is different from the typical inner-city school. This private, Catholic (天主教的) institution consists mostly of white students who come from wealthy families. Although Saint Ignatius is in the city, it also gives its students one of the best education in the state.Society usually tends to focus on the negative side of inner-city schools. Many people like to stereotype (模式化) these schools which, while these general statements may be true in some cases, tend to be worse most of the time.Take Mrs. Borroni, my Spanish teacher, for example. She would often take time out of her class to tell her students about the numerous activities after class with which we should getinvolved. She loved her job so much that she stayed after school every day to moderate activities such as Amnesty International and the Spanish Club. Her students, including me, joined all of the clubs which she moderated just because she made them so interesting. Because of Mrs. Borroni, I got heavily involved in the school's activities and learned a lot in the process. (313 words)B 51. The author's argument that inner-city schools "provide experiences which enrich one's education simply because of their location in the city" is based on ________.A. consensus opinionB. his personal experienceC. a film he sawD. a story he read in a bookC 52. Saint Ignatius High School differs from the typical inner-city school in all the following except __________________.A. minority studentsB. poor studentsC. location in a cityD. inferior education systemA 53. Many people tend to speak more of __________________.A. the negative sides of inner-city schoolB. teachers' lack of love for teaching at St. IgnuatiusC. students' lack of love for learning at St. IgnuatiusD. daily fights at St. IgnatiusD 54. All the following describes Mrs. Borroni except _______________.A. hard-workingB. considerateC. responsibleD. indifferentB 55. It seems that the author's attitude toward inner-city school is _________________.A. optimisticB. defensiveC. criticalD. bitterQuestions 56 to 60 are based on the same passage or dialog.Throughout my childhood, I rarely ever heard about any kind of crime. Obviously I was going to have to behave (表现) a little bit differently in this new environment. Because of St. Ignatius's view as an essential part of the community, people could not exactly be banned from walking around the campus during the day. This meant that I would sometimes see homeless people begging for money as I ran from class to class. One day I ran into someone begging on the corner near school. I decided to give the homeless person a dollar. At the time I saw no reason in my teachers' warnings. For the next week straight, this man waited for me at the same place in the hopes that I would give him more money. He hassled me every day until I finally told him that I was not going to give him anything else. Because this may have been an unusual case, I did not want to make any conclusions about homeless people. However, I did learn from this experience that I should probably listen to my teachers more often on issues such as this one.Students' lives become enriched simply by attending an inner-city school. For someone who had lived in the suburbs all his life, such as myself, a new style of living can be experienced. If St. Ignatius High School were not in the middle of Cleveland, I would not have had so many opportunities to grow and mature as a person. A newspaper headline is the most important part of a news story for several reasons: Firstly, it usually summarizes the lead, and the lead summarizes the whole story. Secondly, the headline draws the reader’s attention to the story. Therefore, the appeal of a story largely depends upon the headline. Thirdly, the headline helps the reader evaluate the news.
