Inside the Gate走进苗圃园Chapter 1 Waiting for Grandma等待奶奶Today it is dusty outside. The wind is whipping at the earth and sending clouds of brown dirt all around the town.I sit here on the doorstep and watch the women come back from work. Finally, I see Grandma carrying her basket. She is covered in dust and looks tired, but she smiles when she sees me. “What are you up to, Kemzie?” she asks.“Waiting for you!” I say. “I want you to come and help me plant trees.”“Trees?” asks Grandma.I tell Grandma that someone came to speak to us at school today about tree planting.I tell her I want to help out in the nursery just out of town where they grow the trees.“We need the trees to give us wood, shade and fruit, and to help keep the Earth well.” I say quickly. Grandma laughs, and puts her basket down.“You go if you want, but I have to make dinner,” she says. For a moment I feel bad. I shouldn’t leave Grandma now. I should help her chop wood for the fire and cook the food she got at the market.Since Mun and Dad died, Grandma has been looking after all our family. It’s hard work for her.

Chapter 3

Chapter 1 Thursday, 3 FebruaryWe live on the edge of a small town north of Sydney. Our house looks out across bush and a gum tree forest. We haven't had much rain this summer, so the forest is very dry. Everyone is worried about bushfires. People keep asking, "Will this be one of those years?"I hear so much about bushfires that I've decided to keep my own diary over the summer. For weeks, the forest workers were clearing firebreaks with bulldozers. A firebreak is a gap wade in the forest to help stop fire spreading. Before our town got so big, the forest workers used to burn off parts of the forest in winter so there would be gaps to stop any summer bushfire spreading. This is called a "controlled burn".In the last few years, people have built houses near the forest. This has made it dangerous to do any more controlled burns.Chapter 2 Monday, 7 FebruaryOur teacher talked to us about bushfires today. She said that bushfires need:1.Fuel like dry grass, plants and trees2.Oxygen3.Heat to start the fire. She said many bushfires are started when people are careless with fires or cigarettes.Lightning can start a bushfire, too. We get lots of lightning storms around Sydney. Our teacher also showed us a wildfire map of the world. Wildfires are fires that burn out of control. In some places, there are grass wildfires, while in other places, there are forest wildfires. And in other places, like where I live, there are bush wildfires.Chapter 3 Friday, 11 FebruaryThis morning, as I was getting on the school bus, I saw Smoke. The bus driver said there was a small fire at Butterfly Creek, about ten kilometres away. We saw fire trucks and tankers rushing to the fire. The firefighters worked all day to bring the fire under control. They put water on the fire and did back burning, which is when firefighters light small fires ahead of the big fire. When the big fire gets to tie burnt part, it can't go any further because there's nothing to burn.Chapter 4 Saturday, 12 FebruaryThis morning, I heard helicopters. Yesterday's back burning didn't work, and the fire was bigger. The firefighters were filling monsoon buckets in the river and dropping the water on the fires.I saw lots of birds flying away from the forest. Bushfires are bad for birds and animals, as well as trees.Chapter 5 Sunday, 18 FebruaryToday, the fire went from bad to worse! It became a crown fire, which means that the treetops started burning. Bushfires usually start out as ground fires and burn slowly. When fire gets to the treetops, it can up from tree to tree and spread very quickly. The wind changed, too. It blew the fire towards the town, and tic air was full of smoke. The fire could spread towards our house, so Dad cleared everything away from around the house and removed all the leaves in the gutters.Chapter 6 Monday, 19 FebruaryToday the police said the fire was coming our way. We had to leave our House! We only had time to throw our special things in the car, like photo albums.I looked after our two cats in the back seat. My baby brother was crying.Dad took off from our House fast, and we went to stay with friends in town.I couldn't stop thinking about oar house and wondering if it would be there when the fire was over.Chapter 7 Tuesday, 15 FebruaryI didn't go to school today or yesterday, but when we woke up this morning, there were clouds in the sky-real clouds, not clouds of smoke!Later, it started to rain-our first heavy rain for two years! We ran outside and danced in the rain with the firefighters. We loved that rain because it helped to put the bushfire out.The firefighters still have to spend another five days damping down hot spots to wake sure the bushfire doesn't start up again. But yes, the bushfire is over!Chapter 8 Wednesday, 16 FebruaryToday, we were told we could go back to our house. We were worried about what we would find.No one spoke as we drove up the road. Then, when we came around the corner, we saw our house! The fire missed us. The firefighters said the wind changed at the last minute, which Helped to save our house.Yes, our house was still standing, but this was what the forest looked like!Chapter 9 Thursday, 28 DecemberAfter the fire, I forgot all about my bushfire diary. I found it today in a drawer, and read it.Lots of things have happened since the bushfire.New trees have grown in the ashes of the old trees. The animals have come back, too. It's taken many months, but everything is almost back to normal!。

Chapter 1 PhotographyChapter 2 The first photographersThe first photographers were inventors, scientists and artists. They built their own cameras, and knew how to use chemicals to process their photos. It wasn't easy to use these early cameras. It could take more than a minute to take a photograph and the plates had to be processed straightaway so that the image wouldn't be lost.Chapter 3 Using filmBy the 1880s, photographers started to use film instead of plates in cameras. This made taking photos easier because many shots could be taken on one roll of film.Cameras became smaller because film was small and light and took up less space inside the cameras than the plates. Also, by the 1880s, cameras started to be sold to the public. These cameras were smaller, cheaper and easier to use than the early cameras. As a result, many people took up photography as a hobby.Chapter 4 Film photographyIn the l900s, more people started taking photos, but few of them processed their own film. This was because it was expensive to buy the equipment and chemicals needed. It was also expensive to set up a darkroom. However, some people did process their own film and today there are still photographers who like to take photos on film and process it themselves. How to process filmProcess film in a darkroom in the following way:1. Place the film in a chemical solution to make the image appear.2. Place the film in another chemical solution to "fix" the image.3. Put the film in the enlarger with the light-sensitive photographic paper below it.4. Shine the light through the film and onto the paper.5. Put the paper in another chemical solution to make the image appear as a photograph.Chapter 5 Digital photographyDigital cameras were first used at the end of the 20th century.Although a digital camera takes an image in the same way as a film camera, it records the image differently.Instead of recording the image chemically on film, a digital camera records the image electronically as digital information. This is the same kind of information a computer uses.Digital cameras became popular very quickly. Most people take photos with them rather than with film cameras.People like to use digital cameras for a, number of reasons:■they are small and easy to use■they have screens that let the photographer see the picture Straightaway■if the image is not right, it can be deleted from the camera■the image can be changed later with a computer program. How to Process Digital PhotosAnyone with a. computer and printer can process their digital photos in the following way:1.Move the photographic files from the camera onto a special photographic program on the computer.2.Make any changes that are needed, such as cutting parts of the photo out.3.Print out the photo.Chapter 6 SummaryWhen photography first began, very few people were able to use cameras. They were large and expensive. Only photographers knew how to use them and how to process the plates or film.Today, cameras are small and quite cheap. They are easy to use and can be connected to a computer program that can make changes to the image and print out the photo. These days, it's easy for anyone to take and to process photos.。
