The National September 11 Memorial opens to the publicThe National September 11 Memorial opens to the public Monday in New York City, more than a decade after the twin towers of the World Trade Center were taken down by terrorists. Visitors will see for the first time the reflecting pools surrounded by bronze panels engraved with the names of those lost on September 11, 2001 and in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Sitting in the footprints of where the towers once stood, the dark marble, cube-shaped pools, each about a half-hectare in size, are the largest man-made waterfalls in North America.Hundreds of trees line the paths to the quiet pools that offer an escape in the midst of the bustling city. The National September 11 Museum sits in the same square as the memorial and is due to open next year. Several office towers and an underground portion of the site also are part of the project, which is expected to be complete in 2015.Victims' families toured the memorial on the 10th anniversary, Sunday, along with President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush. With the sound of the waterfalls in the background, the names of the nearly 3,000 people lost 10 years ago were read aloud during an anniversary ceremony.美国国家911纪念碑星期一在纽约市对公众开放,这距离世界贸易中心双子塔被恐怖分子炸毁已经10年的时间。

[Photo/X inhua]SHANGHAI - The death toll in a bus overturn Wednesday night in Shanghai has risen to 11 after another injured passenger died in hospital Thursday morning, according to the Shanghai Health Bureau. The accident occurred at around 8:54 pm when the bus with 24 people on board turned over near the Longdong Avenue in Pudong District. Seven people were killed at the scene while three died later in the hospital, the office said. The injured passengers were rescued by police, firefighters and medics and were rush ed to two local hospitals. The office said the bus is a shuttle bus of Inventec (Shanghai) Corporation. The victims are believed to be the company's employees.Investigation into the accident is underway.WUHAN - Police are investigating the deaths of two 4-year-old children in a school bus in Jingzhou city, Central China's Hubei province, on Tuesday. The local government confirmed the investigation on Wednesday. The police have detained three people over the incident. The girls, Peng Yiwei and Chen Qingxue, were left for nearly eight hours on the Redbud Kindergarten's bus.According to Chutian Golden Newspaper, driver He Zhengkun, 62, and kindergarten teacher Tan Zuhong, 47, arrived in the bus at about 7:30 am at the Taihu district of Jingzhou to pick up the two children. The newspaper said the vehicle, a minibus with more than 10 seats, reached the kindergarten at 8:30 am. Tan took the children to different classrooms but forgot to check if anyone was left on the bus.He said he found Chen and Peng under the back seat when he returned to the van at 4 pm.The two children were rushed to hospital, but were already dead.According to a resident living near the kindergarten, surnamed He, the girls' angry relatives smashed up the kindergarten. The exact cause of the girls' deaths is still under investigation, but the temperature in Jingzhou city reached 31 C on Tuesday. Both girls were under the care of grandparents as their parents were working as migrants in distant cities."Her parents are working in Guangzhou, and they were very sad when they heard the news," Chen's grief-stricken grandfather said on a videotape provided to China Daily by Hubei TV station. As well as detaining three people over the incident, police have put another six under surveillance."The three detained are He Zhengkun, Tan Zuhong and the director of the kindergarten," Sun Shihua, deputy director of the publicity department of the city's Jingzhou district, told China Daily on Wednesday.Sun said the kindergarten was closed pending further investigation.Yuan Guilin, an expert with Peking Normal University's Rural Development Institute, said such cases happened often because China does not have a school bus system."In some developed countries, the school bus system is directed by the gover nment and regulated by the law," Yuan said, adding that school buses were not a general form of transport and should be treated more seriously.Similar tragedies have been reported in several Chinese cities in recent years as the numbers of private kindergartens and preschools have increased. On August 29, a 3-year-old boy was found dead after being left on a school bus in Sanya city of South China's Hainan province for nine hours. He was dozing when the other children were escorted off the bus.On August 2, a 3-year-old girl suffocated to death after spending eight hours in a school bus in Anqing of the eastern Anhui province.BEIJING - The prison management authority has offered a 100,000-yuan ($15,600) reward to anyone that helps the police capture a prisoner who escaped from a jail near Gaoguzhuang village in North China's Hebei province on Sunday morning. Also anyone providing information that leads to his capture will receive a reward of 20,000 yuan, a publicity department official with the jail said on Wednesday."The prisoner might have stolen cash after escaping and attempted to hire a taxi," said the official who refused to give her name."Only one prisoner escaped at 6:15 am on Sept 11. Police are still hunting him," she said. The male convict, Wang Zhenqing, 43, from neighboring Henan province, began a 10-year sentence for theft at the No 3 Hebei Jail in January 2011, according to the jail's official. The official declined to say whether the man was the only prisoner who attempted to escape and if he managed to sneak out or forced his way out."No one was hurt in the jail break and everything has gone back to normal," she said. "This is all we can disclose at the moment."The jail mainly houses and rehabilitates felons convicted of serious crimes. Both the local Shenzhou Public Security Bureau and the armed police force based in the jail refused to reveal details of their plan to capture the runaway or their deployment. But locals in Gaoguzhuang village, Shenzhou city, said they saw a large number of armed police around the jail and at traffic intersections on Sunday morning and police were searching cars at multiple checkpoints along motorways in the Shenzhou area.Pang Huiwu, an official with Hebei Prison Management Bureau, said there have been few prison breaks in recent years. In March 2008, prisoner X ie Wanli, born in 1980, hijacked a truck crane at a jail in Hebei and rammed open the anti-riot gates and two other gates before crushing through a wall .Xie was later caught by police and sentenced to life in jail.In Mach 2009, two prisoners sawed open steel nets covering a sewer at a jail in Hanzhong city, Shaanxi province. They were sentenced to life in jail after police tracked them down them in Weinan and Xi'an.In October 2009, four prisoners killed a police officer and cut off another's finger in order to open the identity lock in Hohhot, the Inner Mongolia autonomous region. Three were caught and one was killed resisting arrest.BEIJING - Sales of all bullet train tickets will go online at the end of this month, and passengers will pay lower fees if they refund tickets, the railway ministry said.Following sales of tickets online since July for the Beijing-Shanghai and Beijing-Tianjinhigh-speed trains, the Ministry of Railways said on Thursday that tickets for all bullet trains will be sold at .Starting Tuesday, passengers can make a few clicks and buy tickets online for the Zhengzhou-Xi'an and Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railways. Then from next Thursday, six more high-speed railways will go online, includingShanghai-Nanjing, Shanghai-Hangzhou and Guangzhou-Shenzhen.All bullet train tickets will be available online from Sept 30, the ministry said.Passengers can dial the number 12306 or go to the website to inquire about the train timetable, ticket prices and the number of remaining tickets, but so far the hotline has no service in English.Meanwhile, the ministry ruled that it will charge only a 5-percent refund fee starting Sept 25. In the past, passengers could only get 80 percent of the ticket price back. The measures will improve the quality of passenger railway service, the ministry said in a news release on Thursday.Netizens mostly applauded the measures on Thursday, but worried that lower refund fees could be good news for scalpers, who will pay less if they fail to find a buyer. Some passengers, however, believed the ministry could do more."For the railway ministry that monopolizes the rail industry, it has the social responsibility to reduce fees. The ministry could do better, such as setting a fixed fee instead of a fixed percentage," said Wang Lingyun, 23, an employee at a German company in Shanghai.Netizens pointed out other rules that need to be abolished, including refusing to refund tickets for trains that have departed, and only refunding tickets where they were sold. They also complained that the online system is not consumer friendly, suggesting the ministry improve it.Ticket agencies whose income partly comes from commissions said they are not worried about the online sales.A woman surnamed Tang at a ticket agency in Beijing said her clients are all old customers from nearby communities, and it is easier for them to buy tickets from agencies instead of the Internet.Jin Huiyu contributed to this story.1 A prisoner cries in front of his visiting wife and daughter at a prison in Zhengzhou, Central China's Henan province, Sept 8, 2011. The prison organized family reunion meetings for the inmates before the Mid-Autumn Festival. The festival is on the 15th day of the eighth month on the Chinese lunar calendar, Sept 12 this year. The Mid-Autumn Festival is known as a festival of reunion. Many other people have been injured. It is not known how fast the trains were moving. Service on other trains has been suspended, including trains from Brussels to Paris and the Eurostar high-speed train from Brussels to Britain.[2] American Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says Iran is becoming a military dictatorship. Speaking in Qatar on Monday, Ms. Clinton says Iran's Revolutionary Guard is taking power from the government. Secretary Clinton is now traveling to Saudi Arabia to meet with Saudi King Abdullah and Foreign Minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal. She is trying to build support for new restrictions on Iran. She is also expected to talk about ways to start peace talks again between Palestinians and Israelis.[3] Iran says it is studying new proposals for a nuclear fuel agreement from the United States, Russia and France. A government news agency in Iran says the proposals were received after Iran announced last week that it would enrich its uranium to a higher level. A French Foreign Ministry official says there is no new proposal. There is only the plan presented by the International Atomic Energy Agency last October. That plan would require Iran to have its uranium enriched in other countries. Iran is under United Nations' restrictions because it has refused to stop enriching uranium. Enriched uranium is needed to make nuclear weapons. Iran insists it is using nuclear power for peaceful purposes.[4] Secretary of State Clinton says the United States welcomes the ceasefire announced last week between the government of Y emen and Shiite rebels. The ceasefire ends six years of fighting between the Y emeni government and the Huti group. Ms. Clinton said negotiators should now begin talking about rebuilding Y emen and writing a peace agreement. She said the United States is concerned about humanitarian problems in Y emen. The United States has provided more than 19 million dollars to help about 250,000 Y emenis who were forced to leave their homes during the fighting.[5] Forces led by the United States in Afghanistan continue a major offensive against Taliban militants. About 15,000 American, British and Afghan troops have joined the effort in Helmand province. It is the largest military operation since the war began. The operation is centered on the town of Marjah. Afghan military officials say coalition troops now control many areas that had been held by the rebels. American commander, General Stanley McCrystal, has suspended the use of rockets that killed 12 Afghan civilians on Sunday. He also apologized to Afghan PresidentHamid Karzai. Mr. Karzai ordered an investigation into the incident. NA TO took responsibility for the mistake.[6] Pakistani officials say missiles fired from a suspected American spy plane killed at least three militants in a northwestern tribal area on Monday. On Sunday, officials say seven militants were killed when two missiles hit a training area in the town of Mir Ali. This area has been a hiding place for Taliban, al-Qaeda and other militant groups. They have also used this area to organize attacks across the border in Afghanistan.[7] Lawyers in Pakistan are boycotting the courts to protest actions by President Asif Ali Zardari. On Saturday, the Pakistani Supreme Court suspended two judges appointed by Mr. Zardari. The court said the president did not talk with the chief justice of the Supreme Court before appointing the new judges.
