I've always wanted to spend some time out in Wyoming.M: Wait till you hear what the project is...She's working with the buffalo population. The herds have been increasing in size lately, which is good in theory...W: Yeah...but I thought they were in danger of becoming extinct.M: Well, apparently, because of all the winter tourists, paths are created in the snow. More buffalo are surviving the harsh winters because the paths make it easier for the buffalo to move around and find food. But it turns out that some of the herds are infected with a bacteria.W: Oh yeah, I heard about that. Bru—M: Brucella abortusW: Right, It's been around for quite a while.M: Yes it has. Have they made much progress with the research?M: So far, they've been collecting tissue samples from dead buffalo to see if the bacteria's present.W: I'd really be interested in working on this. You know I've been researching diseased animal populations...M: That's why I thought of you...I took the liberty of mentioning your name to my friend. She's hoping you'll be able to spend the whole summer out there.W: Well, I was going to work on my thesis a lot in July, but I'm sure my adviser wouldn't want me to pass up this opportunity.Questions 19 to 21 are based on the conversation you have just heard.Q19. You are the group that’s opposing the extension of the parking lot next to Darwin Hall, right?M: That’s us. We just feel it is important to save some of the natural beauty of the campus. Some of those trees are hundreds of years old.W: It’s a pretty spot. My friends and I had picnics over there by the stream.M: Then you understand how we feel. We are going to organize a protest on Thursday afternoon to get the administration to reconsider the parking lot plan.W: Well, I have a class on Thursday afternoon.M: But maybe you could sign this appeal letter. Then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage oneNext time you bring your kids in for a checkup, don't be surprised if the doctor asks about their tastes in entertainment. The American Academy of Medicine suggested last week that doctors work with parents to evaluate how much TV kids watch and what they see, what video and computer games they play, which websites they visit on the Internet, whether they viewR-rated videos without the company of their parents, what music they like and what books they read. Doctors are worried that kids who spend too much time in front of the tube don't get enough exercise and can become overweight. The academy is also concerned that the messages kids get from entertainment media can make them more violent and sexually active. The academy recommends that children under age two not watch any TV. "Children need activities to stimulate the brain during the first two years of life," says Dr. Miriam Baron, who chairs the academy's committee on public education. "They need feedback and socialization." Older children, she says, should watch TV in a common area. Their bedrooms should be "electronic media-free" zones where they can have a quiet place to read, study, play or just relax.Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard.Q26. What unusual question may doctors ask when giving kids a checkup next time?Q27. The academy suggests that children under age two.Q28. According to the report, children's bedrooms should.Passage TwoMy first semester of college was the worst I’ve been through. I had made plans during the summer to share an apartment with two of my close friends from high school. But before we moved in, problems started developing. One of the two girls I was to share an apartment with was going to work instead of going to college. However, a week before we were to move in, she found out that she didn't get the job. She was forced to live at home and look for work. The rest of thetwo of us lasted for a month and then agreed that we couldn’t make it with the higher monthly rent payments. I started looking around.I found another apartment and the rent wasn’t bad. The place was noisy, but it was the best I could afford for the time. However, one day when I returned, there was smoke coming from the back of the house. The cottage had caught fire, and my room was a burned mess. I was once more out of a place to stay.I finally gave up looking around and moved home. I had to drive forty miles to school every day, so I almost spent as much on gas as I would have on lodging, I was very bored. I almost lost the will to study. It had been really a bad semester.29. what was the speaker’s plan before her first college semester began?30. What was the first lodging problem the speaker encountered?31. Why did the speaker move back home finally?32.Why does the speaker think her first semester of college was the worst?Passage ThreeThe French are at heart traditionalists. Though they dearly love revolutions, they disapprove of shifts in behavior. Everything must be done properly, an expression that applies equally to getting married and getting drunk, stuffing a duck and filling in a form, addressing an envelope and addressing a teacher. There is an established order of things, and the order was established by the French. The desire to maintain standards is best seen on any holiday in the summer. Where the Italians, the British, and even the Germans, relax sufficiently to leave there faces unshaven, or mealtimes become irregular, or dresses become strange, the French behave as though they were still under the microscope of real life.French men and women take two hours over their morning making up. Watch any Frenchman at a campsite in the summer and see how long he spends shaving, trimming his moustache, and on general showers.Wives cook three-course lunches which they serve to their husbands in the stuffy heat at little tables with linen napkins and polished dishware. The white wine must stand in an ice bucket. Everything is correct--the bread, the cheese, the sauce.Mr, eats greedily , Mrs. stands behind him, and a little to the side, nodding happily. She will do the washing-up immediately after the meal is finished. All will be neat and tidy before any other activity is even considered.33. Which people are keen on order, according to the passage?34. What will the wife do after the meal?35. What is characteristic of French people’s lives according to the passage?Section CDirections: In this section, you will hear a passage three times. When the passage is read for the first time, you should listen carefully for its general idea. When the passage is read for the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks numbered from 36 to 43 with the exact words you have just heard. For blanks numbered from 44 to 46 you are required to fill in the missinginformation. For these blanks, you can either use the exact words you have just heard or write down the main points in your own words. Finally, when the passage is read for the third time, you should check what you have written. The Romans built great “aqueducts” to carry fresh water from the mountains to the cities. Many of these aqueducts are still standing today. The Roman Emperors even set up a government health service. They built the first great public hospitals in Europe, and they paid doctors to look after poor people. When the Roman Empire fell to pieces, these civilized methods of treatment disappeared from most of Europe, for more than a thousand years. People went back to the old ways. They lived in dirty conditions, which helped to cause diseases; and they asked God to cure the diseases. They shut up mentally sick people in prisons. Or they burnt them alive because they were supposed to have magic powers. But the work of the Greek and Roman doctors was not lost.Over a thousand years ago, the Arabs moved into many of the Mediterranean countries. They took big parts of the old Roman lands. They translated the Greek and Roman medical books into Arabic. Arab doctors themselves made many new discoveries. When civilization at last came back to Europe, men once again translated the Greek and Roman works on medicine into Latin. Slowly, European doctors discovered again the things that the Greeks and Romans had known so long ago. Slowly, they began to make new discoveries and found out more about the way the body works.。

Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose theone that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.AIn many countries of the world, people can confidently tell you the meaning of their town or city, but most people who live in Manchester, Oxford or Birmingham would not be able to explain what the name of their city means. The name of every British town and city, however, has a long history. Two thousand years ago, most people living in Britain were Celts. Even the word “Britain” is Celtic. Then the Romans arrived and built camps which became cities called “castra”. This is why there are so many place names in England which end in “-chester” or “-caster”—Manchester, for example. The Romans never reached Wales or Scotland, and many place names there are Celtic. For example, Welsh place names that begin with “Llan” come from the Celtic word for church. After the Romans left Britain, it was attacked by tribes called the Anglo-Saxons, who were from the area of Europe that is now Germany and Holland. Without the Roman army, it was impossible to protect the country from these people. The names of their villages often ended in “-ham” or “-ton”. Some got their name from the leader of the village, so Birmingham, for example, means “Beormund’s village”.The Anglo-Saxons were farmers and the landscape was very important to them, so we have villages called Upton (“village on a hill”—a good place to build a village) and Moreton (“village by lake”, where floods could make life tough). Place names that end in “-ford” (a place where you could cross a river) also describe the location of Anglo-Saxon villages.Twelve hundred years ago, the Vikings came to England from Scandinavia. They traded with the Anglo-Saxons but lived in their own villages. These often ended in “-by” or “-thorpe”. The name “Kirkby” means “a village with a church” and Scunthorpe was the village of a man called Skuma. Finally, in 1066, England became Norman—the Normans gave us the place name “grange”, which means farm. And how about London? Experts cannot agree. The Romans called the city Londinium, but they were not the first inhabitants. People once believed that the United Kingdom’s capital city got its name from the castle of a King called Lud, but this is very unlikely. Our guess today is that the name comes from a Celtic word meaning a fast-flowing river. However, like a number of British place names, its history is lost in time.70. According to the passage, Stratford-upon-Avon is most likely a town _______.A. on a hillB. near a castleC. built beside a riverD. with a church71. Which of the following shows the correct order of the arrival of inhabitants in Britain?A. The Celts—The Romans—The Vikings—The Normans—The Anglo Saxons.B. The Romans—The Celts—The Vikings—The Anglo Saxons—The Normans.C. The Celts—The Romans—The Anglo Saxons—The Vikings—The Normans.D. The Romans—The Anglo Saxons—The Celts—The Normans—The Vikings.72. According to the passage, where did the name for London come from?A. It is puzzling and hard to confirm for sure.B. It comes from the term for a fast-flowing river.C. The name is short for Londinium.D. The name is from the castle of a King.BMany of the world’s most famous landmarks now offer virtual tours, meaning people can visit museums, world heritage sites and other attractions from the comfort of the sofa. Such virtual travel experiences, as some experts have considered as an eco-friendly solution to the problem of overtourism, are seeing an increase in popularity. For overcrowded destinations, virtual reality experiences can help divert(使改道) some tourists, easing the burden on the location’s infrastructure (基础设施).However, there’s a big gap between using virtual reality to “try before you buy” and treating virtual reality like the destination itself. To start with, the technology isn’t ready yet. 360-degree virtual reality videos are usually experienced through a headset or an app. The headsets are expensive and heavy, and aren’t comfortable to wear for more than 30 minutes. The apps have none of these problems, but simply aren’t as impressive.Limited physical feelings are another problem. The videos focus on sounds and sights but can’t do much with smell, touch, or taste, and VR experiences tend to only be a few minutes long—hardly equal to a two-week vacation in Spain. Some researchers are creating a full-body suit with enhanced sensory experiences, but it still doesn’t satisfy the deeper needs that make people travel. What’s more, tourists on virtual tours see a world only to the extent that someone was able to film and construct it. In a virtual experience, visitors can’t choose to wander down a side street and discover a charming café—unless those options have already been programmed. It can definitely disappoint those who tend to be less directed in their explorations and more focused on new experiences and discoveries.Virtual reality may never replace traditional travel, but it still offers possibilities. If the technology becomes advanced enough, those who are more environmentally conscious among us—especially those aiming to reduce our carbon footprint—might prefer this form of escape. Also, VR travel does bring parts of the world to people who are physically unable to visit certain landmarks.73. The followings are the benefits brought by virtual travel experiences EXCEPT that _______.A. people can tour some dreamed sites without dealing with lines and crowdsB. the impact of tourism on the environment can be minimizedC. people are able to explore the world without leaving homeD. the travelers’ financial burden can be relieved to some extent74. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?A. The full-body suit meets the deeper needs of the tourists.B. An expensive headset is a must for experiencing virtual tours.C. People can only see what is constructed and programmed on virtual tours.D. Virtual tours satisfy those who are fond of adventuring at will.75. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of virtual tours?A. Indifferent.B. Pessimistic.C. Critical.D. Optimistic.Section CDirections: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.A. To ensure you get enough storage room, try to board the flight early.B. Bring it with you whenever you leave your seat.C. Thieves won’t spend too long on locked bags as it may draw attention to themselves.D. Cases like this are known as in-flight, or mid-flight thefts.AB. Keep your cash or credit cards in different hiding places.AC. Make sure your bag is easily recognizable so thieves can’t just switch it out with a similar looking bag.Tips to Keep Your Personal Items Safe While TravellingYou might be surprised to hear that even in the limited space of an airplane, thefts still do occur. In a case reported, two men on board a flight were arrested after being suspected of stealing cash from fellow passengers’ mid-flight. ___76___ While airlines don’t advertise the fact, they’re not as rare as you may think. There are some tips to ensure you don’t become the victim of such crimes.___77___ This is especially important if you have a black, featureless bag. For example, you can sew a symbol on it or write your initials on the bag.Keep your valuables such as cash, your ID and passport, and jewellery in a small bag that you can place under the seat in front of you. Rest your feet on your bag to make sure no one gets close to the bag. ___78___ It takes just a few seconds for experienced thieves to steal your bag, so never give them the opportunity by leaving it unattended.___79___ For example, you can divide your cash into three portions and keep some in your small bag, some in a pair of jeans that’s rolled up in your checked baggage, and some in your toiletries bag (化妆包). In this way, even if you lose one stash of money, you will not be left withabsolutely no cash.IV. Translation (3+4+4=11%)Directions:Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.80. 对你来说最重要的不是学习成绩,而是学习态度。

He was born into a middle-class family in New York in 1885. Jerome’s mother loved the piano. She began to teach Jerome how to play when he was young. At school, Jerome was a quiet boy and not a top student. When he finished school, his father said he would work in the family’s store. But he later came to believe that Jerome could do better in music than in business. So he let the boy go to Europe to study music. By the early 1920s, Jerome was a great songwriter in New York Broadway. But he wanted to do a truly American musical, with real people and situations. In 1927, he found the story. It was the book “Show Boat” by an American writer. Jerome died at the age of sixty. But “Show Boat” is still very famous all over the world.20. As the costs of traveling have increased a lot in the last several years, service has gotten worse. The price of the gas has been going up. That means the airlines need to save money in other ways, and they do this mainly by cutting services that used to be free. Customers have been complaining about this, but the airlines say there isn't much they can do. One of the first services to go was free meals on long flights. International flights still serve food, but now fliers must pay for food on flights within the United States. Drinks are still free, though. Another service that most airlines no longer provide is free baggage. That means customers now have to pay if they want to store any bags in the plane. There is no cost for someone to bring one small bag on the plane with them. For anything extra, though, there is a fee. There is still one airline that doesn’t charge its passengers for many services. That’s Southwest Airlines. Their saying is “Do the right thing.”With Southwest, the customer comes first.。
