And for Friday, well, another wintry day in all parts of the region. Temperatures near freezing in many places, and along the coast, the wind will make it feel very cold indeed. Inland, some snow on the hills, and there may be fog in the valleys. If you’re out and about driving, watch out for those icy roads! And for the we ekend? Well, we’re not expecting much change, I’m afraid. And that’s all from me. Goodnight.

…I remember// we had this school uniform// and it was like all dark brown// a dark brown shirt and jacket// and a white blouse// and we had to have black shoes and the skirt had to be below the knees// and we all hated this uniform// so we tried to change it// things like// you know// use a belt to bring the skirt higher// or ehh…whatever// and we weren’t allowed to have earrings// but we wore them anyway// outside the school// and then took them off// when we walked in…

We have a great opportunity// at the moment// to encourage awareness of science// among the public.// A recent opinion poll// which was conducted earlier this year// revealed that// 80% of the population// is interested in science.// In addition,// it shows// a growing trust in scientists// who make an important contribution// to society.// However,// the poll also showed// that few people// felt they know enough// about science.// To develop understanding of science// we need more public debate// and we should be making science// more interesting// in school.

Ever since the industrial revolution we have dumped waste into the air. Consequently, atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are now a third higher than in pre-industrial time. The process may, it has to be said, have started long before, when we first burnt down trees to make way for agriculture. However, over the last few decades the rate of increase has grown rapidly. Although its precise nature is unclear there is an obvious relationship between levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and higher global surface temperatures.

The impact of higher temperatures is difficult to assess, but there will certainly be a different world as humans and other loving organisms try to adapt to change. These changes, which will affect us all, include drought and extreme weather. Southern Europe, for example, already has long periods without rainfall. And in the Americans and Asia powerful hurricanes and typhoons have recently killed more people than in several decades.

Of course, some scientists dispute the evidence. But these people, as we all know, represent industries having vested interested – their business, they believe, would be damaged by limits on carbon emissions. But among the wider scientific community the argument is about the speed of change, not whether change is taking place.
