The mental illness I am going to talk about today is called persecutory delusion. It’s a kind of mental disorder mainly resulting in a delusional condition in which the affected persons are always afraid that some sorts of harm is occurring, or is going to occur and make up a potential persecutor in their minds who has the intention to cause harm.

What symptoms do the sufferers have?

People inflicted with persecutory delusion are always bothered by the delusion that they are being physically tortured, ridiculed, tricked, followed and spied on. Therefore, They have difficulties in trusting others, preventing them from opening themselves up to those who are trying to help, and are most likely to miss the opportunity to gain professional aid in time. The patients whose condition are more serious may hurt themselves or have suicide thoughts.

What cause persecutory delusion? There are several reasons.

First, research suggests that genetics play a significant role in the development of delusional disorders, as many people have familial histories of mental illness. Second , These delusions may also be linked to the chemical imbalances in the brain that cause depression and schizophrenia. Third , some psychologists believe excessive pressure of fierce competitions in society may cause this disease. Finally , The people who have skeletons in the closet are likely to suffer persecutory delusion because they always worry about the secrets which may be revealed by others.

How to diagnose persecutory delusion and treat it?

Doctors can diagnose delusional disorders by asking questions about symptoms and conducting brain imaging tests to check for abnormalities. Once a patient has been diagnosed, he or she is usually given antipsychotic medication and scheduled to attend regular meetings with a psychologist or psychiatrist. Psychotherapy can be very effective if a patient is willing to be open and honest with his or her psychologist. Support and reassurance from loved ones is also important to help the individual feel comfortable and begin building trust.
