Hisdesignscontainedprocessors,controlunits,amemoryandaninput/outputsystem.Thesearethefouressentialpartsofamodernmathematica lcomputer!

Alas!

His“seconddifferenceengine”couldn’tuseelectricitysincethishadn’tyetbecomeaus ablesourceofpower,soBabbagehadtomakedowithmechanicalsystems.Forthisreason,themachinewasbig,complicatedandexpensive.ThoughBabbageproducedcompleteplansforthemachine,hecouldn’tbuildit.Itwastooadvancedforitsage!

Itwasnotuntilalmost160yearslaterthatBabbage’s“seconddifferenceengine”wasf inallymanufactured.ThefirstworkingversionofthismachinewasbuiltbytheScienceMuseum inLondon,fortheBabbagebicentenaryin1991.AsecondmachinewasthenbuiltforanAmericanhigh­techm illionaire,whoputitintheComputerHistoryMuseum,inCalifornia.
