It was on a bucket of w ater in the garden.” Mr Robinson smiled and said, “Take it to the kitchen, put it in front of the stove (炉子) there, and dry it.”The boy took the ice to the kitchen and put it in front of the stove. He dried his hands, because they were very cold and wet, and then he went to the ice again. He looked at it, and then he took it to his father again. Our bodies rest while we sleep. In the morning we are ready to work and play again. Our bodies grow most while we are asleep. Children usually need more sleep. They can learn their lessons better after they have had plenty of rest. Boys and girls who are eight or nine years old need ten hours of sleep every night. Our bodies need plenty of air when we sleep. If we don’t get enough fresh air, we’ll feel tired when we wake up. While in bed we must not cover our heads. Our lungs need enough fresh air. If we open our windows at night we can have plenty of fresh air. Cool air is better than warm air. Boys and girls who want to be strong must get plenty of sleep.26. If we buy food, we have to pay for it. If a doctor treats us, we know there will be a bill to pay. These are private bills. But there are also public bills that must be paid. Public bills are paid for by the government. In return we get needed services. We all use these services without thinking how we get them. But such services cost money. We pay for these services through taxes. What would happen if everyone in a city stopped paying taxes? The water supply would stop. Water might even become unclean and impure. The streets might not be cleaned. There would be no police force to protect people and property. Schools would be closed. People would become sick and disease might spread. We would not want to live in such a city. We all want pure water and food, clean streets, and good schools. We want police to protect us from crime. These services are expensive. The bills get larger each year. We spend public money today for services that we did not have fifty years ago. For instance, we now use public money to help stop accidents in mines and shops and to help farmers. The chief duty of every government is to protect persons and property. Billions of dollars each year are spent on schools and libraries. Public money is used to pay the teachers and other public officials. Also, a large amount of public fund is spent on roads. The greatest part of the needed funds is raised by taxes. A tax is the money that we all must pay to support the government. The law orders us to pay taxes. We have no choice in the matter. Almost everyone pays some tax in one form or another.Years ago, the government made money from the sale of public lands. But most of the best public lands have now been sold. The money raised was used to help to pay the costs of the government. There are still some public lands that contain oil, coal, gas, and other natural products. They could be sold. But we want to save them for future years. So, we all must pay our share for the services that make our lives comfortable.31. Who should pay for the public bills?A. The publicB. The societyC. The governmentD. Both A and C32. Why should everyone pay taxes?A.Because water might even become unclear and impure.B.Because streets might not be cleaned and schools would be closed.C.Because people would become sick and disease might spread.D.Because the government would have funds to work for the welfare of people.33. Why did the government sell public lands years ago?A.Because those public lands were not rich in natural resources.B.Because the government wanted to benefit from the sale of lands.C.Because the government had to pay all kinds of costs.D.Because people needed lands to build their houses.Passage fourEveryone knows that the favorite food in the United States is the hamburger. It seems impossible, but people eat 34 billion hamburgers a year. This is enough to make a line of hamburgers around the world four times. The favorite place to buy a hamburger is a fast-food restaurant. In these restaurants, people order their food, wait just a few minutes, and carry it to their tables themselves. They can eat it in the restaurant or take the food out and eat it at home, at work, or in a park. At some restaurants people can drive up beside a window. They order the food, and a worker hands it through the window. They eat it in their cars. Hamburgers are not the only kind of food that fast-food restaurants serve. Some serve fish, chicken, beef sandwiches, or Mexican food. They also serve fries (French fried potatoes) , shakes ( a drink made from milk and ice cream), soft drink and coffee.Fast-food restaurants are very popular because the service is fast and the food is inexpensive. For many people, this is more important than quality of the food. These restaurants are also popular because the food is always the same. People know that if they eat at a com pany’s restaurant in the north or south of the city, the food will be the same. If they eat in New York or San Francisco, it will still be the same.Fast service and low cost are important in the United States. One reason is that about 50 percent of all married women with children work outside the home. They are too busy and too tired to cook dinner every night. Is the food at fast-food restaurants good for you? In general, it is all right, except that it has too much fat and salt. One thing is sure. People will continue to eat fast foods. In fact, now there are fast-food restaurants in countries all over the world.36. In a fast-food restaurant, people ___________.A. stand up to eatB. are served at tableC. eat in a hurryD. serve themselves37. People can find the same food in all the restaurants.D. People can take fast food.40. What’s the main idea of the passage?A . Americans eat enough hamburgers to make a line around the world four times.B. Fast-food restaurants are popular in the United States.C Some people can eat fast food in parks.D.- Mothers who work outside home often have meals in fast-foodrestaurants.Par tⅣTranslation (3’, 3’*5, 15% )Directions: Translate following sentences from Chinese into English.1. 暴雨通常出现在夏季是不足为奇的。

Each passage is followed by five questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should decide on the best choice by writing the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet(机读纸).7.Passage OnePeople have grown taller over the last century, with South Korean women shooting up by more than 20cm on average, and Iranian men gaining 16.5cm. A global study looked at the average height of 18-year-olds in 200 countries in 1914 and 2014.The results reveal that while Swedes were the tallest people in the world in 1914, Dutch men have risen from 12th place to claim top spot with an average height of 182.5cm. Larvian women, meanwhile, rose from 28th place in 1914 to become the tallest in the world a century later, with an average height of 169.8cm.James Bentham, a co-author of the research from Imperial College, London, says the global trend is likely to be due primarily to improvements in nutrition and healthcare. “An individual's genetics has a big influence on their height, but once you average over whole populations, genetics plays a less key role” he added.A little extra height brings a number of advantages, says Elio Riboli of Imperial College. “Being taller is associated with longer life expectancy,” he said. “This is largely due to a lower risk ofdying of cardiovascular (心血管的) disease among taller people.”But while height has increased around the world, the trend in many countries of north and sub-Saharan Africa causes concern, says Riboli. While height increased in Uganda and Niger during the early 20th century, the trend has reversed in recent years, with height decreasing among 18-year-olds.“One reason for these decreases in height is the economic situation in the 1980s,” said Alexander Moradi of the University of Sussex. The nutritional and health crises that followed the policy of structural adjustment, he says, led to many children and teenagers failing to reach their full potential in terms of height.Bentham believe the global trend of increasing height has important implications. “How tall we are now is strongly influenced by the environment we grew up in,” he said. “If we give children the best possible start in life now, they will be healthier and more productive for decades to come.”(5分)(1).What does the global study tell us about people’s height in the last hundred years?(1分)A.There is a remarkable difference across continents.B.There has been a marked increase in most countries.C.The increase in people’s height has been quickening.D.The increase in women’s height is bigger than in men’s.(2).What does James Bentham say about genetics in the increase of people’s height?(1分)A.It counts less than generally thought.B.It outweighs nutrition and healthcare.C.It impacts more on an individual than on population.D.It plays a more significant role in females than in males.(3).What does Elio Riboli say about taller people?(1分)A.They tend to live longer.B.They enjoy an easier life.C.They generally risk fewer fatal diseases.D.They have greater expectations in life.(4).What do we learn about 18-year-olds in Uganda and Niger?(1分)A.They grow up slower than their peers in other countries.B.They are actually shorter than their earlier generations.C.They find it hard to bring their potential into full play.D.They have experienced many changes of government.(5).What does James Bentham suggest we do?(1分)A.Watch closely the global trend in children's development.B.Make sure that our children grow up to their full height.C.Try every means possible to improve our environment.D.Ensure our children grow up in an ideal environment.8.Passage TwoIf you were like most children, you probably got upset when your mother called you by a sibling's (兄弟姐妹) name. How could she not know you? Did it mean she loved you less?Probably not. According to the first research to tackle this topic head-on, misnaming the most familiar people in our life is a common cognitive (认知的) error that has to do with how our memories classify and store familiar names. The study, published online in April in the journal Memory and Cognition, found that the “wrong” name is not random but is invariably fished out from the same relationship pond: children, siblings, friends. The study did not examine the possibility of deep psychological significance to the mistake, says psychologist David Rubin, “but it does tell us who’s in and who’s out of the group”. The study also found that within that group, misnamings occurred where the names shared initial or internal sounds, like Jimmy and Joanie or John and Bob. Physical resemblance between people was not a factor. Nor was gender. The researchers conducted five separate surveys of more than 1,700 people Some of the surveys included only college students; others were done with a mixed age population. Some asked subjects about incidents where someone close to them--- family or friend---had called them by another person’s name. The other surveys asked about times when subjects had themselves called someone close to them by the wrong name. All the surveys found that people mixed up names within relationship groups such as grandchildren, friends and siblings but hardly ever crossed these boundaries. In general, the study found that undergraduates were almost as likely as old people to make this mistake and men as likely as women. Older people and women made the mistake slightly more often, but that may be because grandparents have more grandchildren to mix up than parents have children. Also, mothers may call on their children more often than fathers, given traditional gender norms. There was no evidence that errors occurred more when the misnamer was frustrated, tired or angry.(5分)(1).How might people often feel when they were misnamed?(1分)A.Unwanted.B.Unhappy.C.Confused.D.Indifferent.(2).What did David Rubin's research find about misnaming?(1分)A.It is related to the way our memories work.B.It is a possible indicator of a faulty memory.C.It occurs mostly between kids and their friends.D.It often causes misunderstandings among people.(3).What is most likely the cause of misnaming?(1分)A.Similar personality traits.B.Similar spellings of names.C.Similar physical appearance.D.Similar pronunciation of names.(4).What did the surveys of more than 1,700 subjects find about misnaming?(1分)A.It more often than not hurts relationships.B.It hardly occurs across gender boundaries.C.It is most frequently found in extended families.D.It most often occurs within a relationship groups.(5).Why do mothers misname their children more often than fathers?(1分)A.They suffer more frustrations.B.They become worn out more often.C.They communicate more with their children.D.They generally take on more work at home.得分阅卷人五、Part II Reading Comprehension Section B (共1题,共10分)9.Directions: In this section, you are going to read a passage with ten statements attached to it.Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Please write your answers on the Answer Sheet (机读纸).1.How you approach studying matters(A-C)2.Where you study is important(D-E)3. Bring everything you need, nothing you don’t(F-G)4. Outline and rewrite your notes(H)5. Practice by yourself or with friends(I)6.Make a schedule you can stick to(J)7. Take breaks (and rewards!)(K)8. Keep healthy and balanced(L)9. Know what the expectations are for the class(M-N)(10分)A.Students grapple with many issues in their lives, and because of all of the competingthings for your attention, it’s hard to concentrate on studying. And yet if you’re inschool, you have to do at least a little studying in order to progress from year to year. The key to effective studying isn't cramming or studying longer, but studying smarter. You can begin studying smarter with these nine proven and effective study habits.B.Too many people look at studying as a necessary task, not an enjoyment or anopportunity to learn. That's fine, but researchers have found that how you approachsomething matters almost as much as what you do. Being in the right mindset isimportant in order to study smarter,C.Sometimes you can’t “force” yourself to be in the right mindset, and it is during such times that you should simply avoid studying If you’re distracted by a relationship issue, an upcoming game, or finishing an important project, then studying is just going to be an exercise in frustration. Come back to it when you’re not preoccupied (or obsessed!) by something else going on in your life.D.A lot of people make the mistake of studying in a place that really isn’t conductive to concentrating. A place with a lot of distractions makes for a poor study area. If you try and study in your dorm room, for instance, you may find the computer, TV, or a roommate more interesting than the reading material you’ re trying to digest.E.The library, a corner in a student lounge or study hall are good places to check out. Make sure to choose the quiet areas in these places, not the loud, central gathering areas. Investigate multiple places on-campus and off-campus; don't just pick the first one you find as “good enough” for your needs and habits. Finding an ideal study place is important, because it’s one you can reliably count on for the next few years. F.Unfortunately, when you find an ideal place to study, sometimes people bring things they don’t need. For instance, while it may seem ideal to type notes into a computer to refer back to later, computers are a powerful distraction for many people because they can do so many different things. Playing games, going online, surfing the Web, and answering emails are all wonderful distractions that have nothing to do with studying. So ask yourself whether you really need a computer to take notes, or whether you can make do with the old fashioned paper and pen or pencil.G.Don’t forget the things you need to study for the class, exam or paper you’re focusing on for the study session. Nothing is more time consuming and wasteful than having to run back and forth regularly because you forget an important book, paper, or some other resource you need to be successful.H.Most people find that keeping to a standard outline format helps them boil information down to its most basic components. People find that connecting similar concepts together makes it easier to remember when the exam comes around. The important thing to remember in writing outlines is that an out-line only works as a learning tool when it is in your own words and structure. Every person is unique in how they put similar information together (called “chunking” by cognitive psychologists). So while you’re welcomed to copy other people’s notes or outlines, make sure you translate those notes and outlines into your own words and concepts. Failing to do this is what often causes many students to stumble in remembering important items. I.The old saying, practice makes perfect, is true. You can practice by yourself by testing yourself with either practice exams, past quizzes, or flash cards(depending on what kind of course it is and what's available). If a practice exam isn't available, you canmake one up for yourself and your classmates. If a practice or old exam from a course is available, use it as a guide ___do not study to the practice or old exam! Such exams help you understand the breadth of content and types of questions to expect, but are not the actual material to study for.J.Too many people treat studying as the thing to do when you get around to it or have some spare time. But if you schedule study time just as your class time is scheduled, you’ll find it becomes much less of a hassle in the long run. Instead of lastminute cramming sessions, you’ll be better prepared because you haven’t put off all the studying into one 12-hour marathon. Spending 30 or 60 minutes every day you have a class studying for that class before or after is a lot easier and will allow you to actually learn more of the material.K.Because so many people view studying as a chore or task, it’s human nature to avoid it. If, however, you find rewards to help reinforce what you’re doing, you may be pleasantly surprised by the change you may find in your attitude over time.Rewards start by chunking study time into manageable components. Studying for 4 hours at a time with no breaks is not realistic or fun for most people. Studying for 1 hour, and then taking a 5-minute break and grabbing a snack is usually more sustainable and enjoyable. Divide study time into segments that make sense and work for you. If you have to digest a whole textbook chapter, find sections in the chapter and commit to reading and taking notes on one section at a time. Maybe you only do one section in a sitting, maybe you do two. Find the limits that seem to work for you.L.It’s hard to live a balanced life while in school, I know. But the more balance you seek out in your life, the easier every component in your life becomes. If you spend all of your time focusing on a relationship or a game, you can see how easy it is to be out of balance. When you're out of balance, the things you’re not focusing on such as studying become that much harder. Don't spend all of your time studying ___ have friends, keep in touch with your family, and find interests outside of school that you can pursue and enjoy.M.Different professors and teachers have different expectations for their students. While taking good notes and listening in class are good starts, you can do better by spending some time with the instructor or professor's assistant. Talking to the instructor early on especially if you foresee a difficult course ahead ___ will help you understand the course requirements and the professor's expectations. If you get a particularly bad grade on a paper or exam, talk to the instructor. Try and understand where things went wrong, and what you can do in the future to help reduce it from happening again.Don’t forget to learn!N.Studying isn’t just about passing an exam, as most students look at it as. Studying isan effort to actually learn things, some of which you might actually care about. So whileyou’ll have to take your share of classes that have little or nothing to do with yourinterests, you should still look for interesting things to take away from every experience.(1).___ There are always interesting things to be found in what you learn.(1分)(2).___ You should space your work out over shorter periods of time and not try to cram all ofyour studying into just one or two sessions.(1分)(3).___ Past test papers are only useful in that they give you a general idea of the subject areas tofocus on and help you identify the style of the questions.(1分)(4).___ It is important to know what the professors will be expecting of you when you sign up fortheir courses.(1分)(5).___ Studying can be a problem when you aren’t in the mood for it.(1分)(6).___ Only bring the necessary study tools with you when you go to your ideal study place.(1分)(7).___ Notes are only useful and helpful when they are written using your own words andconcepts.(1分)(8).___ Finding a positive study environment is very important.(1分)(9).___ In order to study efficiently, you have to have the right attitude.(1分)(10).___ Information reviewed amid distractions is less likely to be remembered.(1分)得分阅卷人六、Part II Reading Comprehension Section C (共1题,共10分)10.Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. A good example is a man meeting a woman and sensing her ___3___. He then extendsa formal invitation for a date. He would then take her to a dinner and a movie.Today the rules of traditional dating are less clear. Twenty years ago, if a young lady asked a young man out on a date, it was thought to be __9__. Now, women are being encouraged to take the initiative and ask men out. A date may consist of a brief meeting at a cafe or a trip to the___10___ art museum. Men often pay on the first date, but the woman may offer to go Dutch. Reading Judgment (True or False) ( 20')Directions: In this part, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the following 10 questions. If the statement agrees with the information given in the passage. You choose A for True; and if statement contradicts1the information given in the passage, you choose B for False.Ability to LearnPeople differ in their ability to learn. They differ in the amount of ability they have, as well as in the kind of ability they have. Some students can barely get passing marks in high school, while others earn all A?s. Certain students are successful in mathematics and science but do poorly in literature and history. Other students do well in literature and history and poorly in science and mathematics. It is hard to find out what causes these differences. Are they due to the person?s background — tothe kind of home or neighborhood in which he grew up and the kind of experiences he had? Or is a person?s abilityto learn passed on to him from his ancestors, along with such traits as the texture of his hair and the color of his eyes? Most studies of these questions seem to point to the fact that both the conditions under which a person grows up (his environment) and the traits passed on to him from his ancestors (his inheritance) determine how well the person learns. It is true that some families have an unusually large number of gifted members. But these families may live in homes in which there are books and other opportunities for learning. The parents may be concerned with their children?s success in school. In other families there are generations of people with very modest abilities. In these families, interest in learning may not be encouraged.Differences between boys and girls in ability to learn have also been reported. Generally, however, the differences have been small. Girls tend to have slightly better grades in elementary school, and they re slightly better in work skills than boys. Boys, on the average, get higher scores on mathematical learning tasks and in science and mechanics. It is doubtful that the differences reported in learning reflect physical differences between boys and girls. It is more likely that the differences in learning reflect a general feeling among people in the Western world. Certain tasks are popularly felt to be best suited to girls and others best suited to boys.It is thought by many people that children learn more easily than adults. But children are not necessarily the best learners. The ability to remember numbers, to memorize poetry, or to learn school subjects increases as people grow older. In many of these tasks a person can achieve nearly twice as much at the age of 20 as he can at the age of 10. After the age of 25 the ability to acquire new learning begins to drop somewhat. This drop continues for the rest of one?s life. But it is not the same for all subjects. The ability to learn routine tasks falls off faster thanthe ability to learn meaningful material. Each successive stage of the industrial revolution, however, made the social structure more complicated. Many intermediate groups grew up during the nineteenth century between the upper middle class and the working class. There were small—scale industrialists as well as large ones, small shopkeepers and tradesmen, officials and salaried employees, skilled and unskilled workers, and professional men such as doctors and teachers. Farmers and peasants continued in all countries as independent groups.During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the possession of wealth inevitably affected a person?s social position. Intelligent industrialists with initiative made fortunes by their wits which lifted them into an economic group far higher than that of their working—class parents. But they lacked social training of the upper class, who despised 3them as the “new rich.”They often sent their sons and daughters to special school to acquire social training. Here their children, mixed with the children of the upper classes, were accepted by them, and very often found marriage partnersfrom among them. In the same way, a thrifty, hardworking laborer, thoughnot clever himself, might save for his son enough to pay for an extended secondary school education in the hope that he would move in a“white-collar” occupation, carrying with it a higher salary and a moveup in the social scale. In the twentieth century the increased taxation of higher incomes, thegrowth of the social services, and the wider development of educational opportunity have considerably altered the social outlook. If the statement agrees with the information given in the passage・ You choose A for True; and if statement contradicts the information given in the passage, you choose B for False.Open EducationToday many people arc concerned about improving classroom instruction. In the opinion of some people, open education will provide a solution to the problems. By contrast, critics of open education are sure it spells disaster in the classro om. Let us investigate this controversial subject and see what kind of judgment we can make ・Open education differs from traditional education in two major areas: how the teacher relates to the students, and how the teacher manages the classroom. These two aspects are closely related in that the teacher's management of the classroom depends very much on how the teacher views the maturity of the students・In traditional education, the teacher may feel that the students are not very grown up. Usually teachers are older than their students and thus teachers feel that because their students are younger and less experieneed, their students do not know very much about the world・ The teachers feel that they must tell the students what to do most of the time, and they feel obliged to make the students study specific things. By contrast, in open education, the teachers believe that the students are individuals first and students second. They expect the students to be responsible for the things that they do, just as adults are. The teachers believe that a student's ideas and feelings are just as important as the teacher\・ Thus teachers in open education allow their students to decide what they want to do rather than require them to study specific subjects or to undergo a specific sequence of study. The teacher lets the student decide what to study and how much to study・ It is very important for the teachers to show confidence in the student's ability to make appropriate decisions for himself or herself.Classroom management depends, then, on how the teacher feels about the student^ ability to make correct decisions. In the traditional classroom, the students are told what to do and when to do it. There is a list of things that the students must do to finish the class. The rules are made by the teacher, and the students must follow them even if they see no reason for the rules. By contrast, in open education, the teacher allows the individual students to choose what they will do at any given moment・ Students do what interests them: they may study or talk, or do nothing at all,讦they want to. There are no specific tasks the students must accomplish and no time limits eithe匚Furthermore, there are no traditional rules made by the teacher The only rules in an open classroom are rules concerning everyonet safety. The students are allowed to discover subjects in the open classroom instead of being made to study them. We can really see that open education is a relatively complex idea.Obviously there are some very good things about open education. This method of teaching allows the students to grow as people and to develop their own interests in many subjects・ But many students will not do well in an open classroom. Some students encounter difficulty in adjusting to a classroom where there are too few rules・Without a ready-made structure, these students will do little or no work such students have a problem making choices for they simply because there are so many options available・ Many students want rules in the classroom and tend to worry about the rules even when there arc no rules・ They feel helpless without an authority figure sending over them telling them what to do, how to do it, and when it must be done.In theory, open education sounds very exciting・ It would be wonderful to observe a classroom of students busily engaged in studying subjects of their own choosing, pursuing new subjects as the need arose, discussing their projects with one another or with their teacher who serves primarily as a resource person and helpe匸On the other hand, in contrast with a traditional classroom, the open classroom might appear chaotic with students moving about and perhaps holding noisy conversations that might interfere with another student^ concentration or still another student's nap. Also it would be difficult to measure a student^ progress in any meaningful way.Perhaps it is possible to adapt some of the ideas of an open education to a traditional classroom. Depending on the student's need for rules, the teacher could provide a flexible schedule of activities, providing more structure for those students who work better in a structured atmosphere and less structure for students who can work independeinly. The teacher can also modify his or her behavior toward individual students, gradually encouraging the more dependent students to seek independence and to begin to take more responsibility for their own learning.1.In the American Civil War, although the soldiers of both sides had much in common, they were quite different. _____A.TrueB. The curriculum(课程)consisted mainly of the classical languages, and the purpose of this kind of school was the preparation of boys for college, where most of them would be fitted for the ministry・The academy began in the early 1750's with Benjamin Franklin's school in Philadelphia, which later became the University of Pennsylvania・ Il extended generally to about the middle nineteenth century, except in the southern states where the public high school was late in developing and where the academy continued to be a principal means of secondary education even after 19OO.The academy was open to girls as well as to boys, and it provided a wider curriculum than what the Latin grammar school had furnished. It was designed not only as a preparation for college but also for practical life in commercial and business activities・Although its wide educational values are evident and are recognized as important contributions to secondary education in this country, the academy has never been considered a public institution as the public high school has come to be.The public high school had its origin in Massachusetts in 1821 when the English Classical School was established in Boston. In 1827,the state enacted(制定)the first state wide public high school law in the United States. By 1840, there were perhaps a dozen public high schools in Massachusetts and many in other eastern states by 1850, they could also be found in many other states・ Just as the curriculum of the academy grew out of that of the Latin grammar school, the curriculum of the public high school developed out of that of the academy. The public high school in the United States is a repudiation(推翻)of the aristocratic(贵族白勺)and selective principle of the European educational tradition. He dried his hands, because they were very cold and wet, and then he went to the ice again. He looked at it, and then he took it to his father again. Our bodies need plenty of air when we sleep. If we don’t get enough fresh air, we’ll feel tired when we wake up. While in bed we must not cover our heads. Our lungs need enough fresh air. More than three-fourths of the money spent by our citizens. So, we all must pay our share for the services that make our lives comfortable.11. Who should pays for the public bills?A. The publicB. The societyC. The governmentD. Both A and C12. People know that if they eat at a company’s restaurant in the north or south of the city, the food will be the same. Part Two Reading Comprehension (40%)Passage 2Are the following statements true or false according to the passage? Write T/F accordingly. When I Was in AmericaFor most people, the holiday season is a time of joy and family reunion. For me, it is a time of mixed emotions –for I have been away from my family and friends in Iran while studying in the United States. Rather than lock myself in my loneliness, I have tried each Christmas to learn a little more about the culture of the country and know more about my American friends.A tie-clasp I still wear reminds me repeatedly of the Christmas of 1989, which was quite memorable. All my classmates had eagerly looked forward to the holiday time. I had no vacation because I was short of money. My check from home had not arrived on schedule because of the crush of holiday mail. One day I walked to the campus to pick up my mail at the International Students Office. But the all important check still had not arrived. Maria, Mexican-American student, who worked as a temporary secretary in the department when others left for their holidays, must have seen me as I left the mailbox with disappointment showing on my face. She invited me to spend Christmas Eve with her family. I accepted all too gladly.Maria’s family was not rich. They lived in a modest small house. Maria introduced me to her parents, her aunt and her sister, who welcomed me warmly. Maria’s father could only speak Spanish, so he talked to me while Maria’s sister acted as an interpreter. The kind look in his eyes and his relaxed behavior made me feel right at home. The dinner was very elaborate. Each dish had a special feature, sauce and a blend of seasonings. Maria’s aunt ate while standing at a corner of the small, old table. I felt a little uncomfortable, knowing that I was occupying her place, but her gesture expressed the sincere hospitality with which Maria’s whole family received me. After dinner, Maria chose a small package from under the Christmas tree and handed it to me. Inside I found the tie-clasp I still use to this day.Looking at the tie-clasp, I know I would always regard it as a memento of an unforgettable evening of good friendship during a hard and lonely period of my life.1. They differ in the amount of ability they have, as well as in the kind of ability they have. Some students can barely get passing marks in high school, while others earn all A’s. Certain students are successful in mathematics and science but do poorly in literature and history. Other students do well in literature and history and poorly in science and mathematics. It is hard to find out what causes these differences. Are they due to the person’s background— tothe kind of home or neighborhood in which he grew up and the kind of experiences he had? Or is a person’s ability to learn passed on to him from his ancestors, along with such traits as the texture of his hair and the color of his eyes? Most studies of these questions seem to point to the fact that both the conditions under which a person grows up (his environment) and the traits passed on to him from his ancestors (his inheritance) determine how well the person learns. It is true that some families have an unusually large number of gifted members. But these families may live in homes in which there are books and other opportunities for learning. The parents may be concerned with their children’s success in school. This drop continues for the rest of one’s life. But it is not the same for all subjects. The ability to learn routine tasks falls off faster than the ability to learn meaningful material. It also seems to be true that people who are intelligent and well educated show less of a drop than others in ability to learn as they grow older. The rapid growth of technical and other information in this century has made learning particularly important. But many questions wait for answers. Much research is going on in psychological laboratories. Psychologists want to know how memory works. In what way is an ability to learn affected by the skills we have learned before? Do human beings have certain inborn abilities that make it possible for them to learn some skills more easily than others? The need for learning and remembering is especially important to students. Perhaps your task as a student will be made easier as more is discovered about learning.1. Different people have different abilities to learn.A. TrueB. False2. Each passage is followed by 5 questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter. Passage 1The key to any successful garage sale (家庭旧物出售) is to get the word out. The best means of advertising your sale is to place an ad in the local newspaper. If you have a city and neighborhood paper, make sure you advertise in both. The ad should be large enough that it stands out. It should also include information on where the sale is located with directions, the “hot” items you’re selling and the time the sale will start and end. An ad should be placed at least two days before the sale and run until the day of your event. That way people can plan their route(路线) to the sale in advance.Signs are another great way to inform your community. Post them in places where people gather, such as stores and community centers. Some businesses have a central bulletin board (布告栏), which is the best place to advertise. Other places to post are at the local college or university campus. This is especially helpful if your sale is happening in August or early September when students have returned to school and are looking for cheap finds.Post signs around your neighborhood. Printing Ads for Garage SalesPassage 2In the eighteenth—century one of the first modern economists, Adam Smith, thought that the “whole annual produce of the land and labor of every country” provided revenue to “three different orders of people: those who live by rent, those who live by wages, and those who live by profit”. Farmers and peasants continued in all countries as independent groups.During the ni neteenth and early twentieth centuries the possession of wealth inevitably affected a person’s social position. Intelligent industrialists with initiative made fortunes by their wits which lifted them into an economic group far higher than that of their working—class parents. But they lacked social training of the upper class, who despisedthem as the “new rich.”They often sent their sons and daughters to special school to acquire social training. Here their children, mixed with the children of the upper classes, were accepted by them, and very often found marriage partners from among them. In the same way, a thrifty, hardworking laborer, though not clever himself, might save for his son enough to pay for an extended secondary school education in the hope t hat he would move in a “white-collar” occupation, carrying with it a higher salary and a move up in the social scale. In the twentieth century the increased taxation of higher incomes, the growth of the social services, and the wider development of educational opportunity have considerably altered the social outlook. The upper classes no longer are the sole, or even the main possessors of wealth, power and education, though inherited social position still carries considerable prestige.6. What criterion did Adam Smith seem to go by in his classification of social groups?A. The amount of wealthB. The amount of moneyC. The social statusD. The way of getting money7. They were owners of large factories.C They were intelligent industrialists.D They were skilled workers who made their fortune.9. According to the passage, what did those people do who intended to make their children move up in the socialladder?A. They saved a lot of money for their children to receive higher education.B. They tried to find marriage partners from the children of the upper class.C. They made greater fortunes by their wits.D. They worked even harder to acquire social training.10. Computers a lot of information. They solve many problems quickly in order to bring people back safely to earth.Apollo 13 was sent into space on April 11, 1970, three astronauts on board. They were on their way to the moon. The trip went well for two days. , when Apollo 13 was 200,000 miles from earth, there was a sudden problem. The spaceship oxygen. The men might die without enough oxygen they could return to earth.Very quickly, the scientists in the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas, went to work on the problem. How could these men quickly and safely to earth? they have enough oxygen left to return? It months of work for scientists alone to study all the possible answers to these problems. They could use one thing—a computer. One of the largest and computers in the world was at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston.Scientists quickly thought up all possible ways to save the men in Apollo 13. They the information into the computer as fast as they could. They did not stop to eat or rest. For 12 hours, scientists and the computer worked without stopping. every possible answer to the problem, the computer how long it would take, how much fuel, how much oxygen, and the chances of or failure. Finally, the computer came the best answer. The three astronauts came back to earth safely. They landed in the ocean only one-half mile from the ship, picked them up.This is just a typical example of the importance of computers. The computer is so important to space travel scientists do not want the computer to when they need it. It is built to work approximately six years without repair. The spacecraft Center has a second computer just like the first one. They can use the second computer there is any trouble with the first one.
