Eating disorders An eating disorder is when you eat too much or too little food. About 5% of Australian‟s will have an eating disorder sometime in their lives. 15% of people with eating disorders die. The government provides therapy, hospitalization, and medicine for people with serious eating disorders.

Heart disease
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Australia, causing 36% of deaths (48 000 dead) in 2004. It kills 1 Australian every 10 minutes.

Dementia Dementia is where you slowly forget the things you know; how to speak, how to do things, and who people are. About 500 000 Australians have dementia. The Australian Government gives money, nurses, hospital care and other services to people with dementia.
Australians are more likely to get cancer if they •smoke

•have a poor diet •are sick
•work in the sun
•work with radiation
•have a family member with cancer.
Psychosis
Psychosis is when you mind cannot think properly. Sometimes you see and hear things that are not there, or believe things that are not real. Psychosis affects about 3% of Australians.
Cancer
Cancer is the 3rd biggest killer in Australia. Common types of cancer are lung cancer, skin cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer. The Australian government provides education programs, public warnings and free health checks to reduce cancer. If you have cancer, the government will give you money and a nurse.
Homelessness
Some poor families, young people, abused women, Aboriginal people, people with alcohol, drug, or mental problems are homeless in Australia. You are homeless if you have no where to live.
Suicide Suicide is when you kill yourself. About 2100 Australians suicide every year. People sometimes suicide if they fail an exam, divorce, lose a loved one, lose their job, or become ill. The Australian Government provides free counseling for people who are thinking about suicide or have a family member who suicided.
Alcohol Abuse Alcohol abuse is when you drink too much alcohol for too long, until you feel like you need it. 3000 Australians die each year, and 65000 go to hospital because of alcohol abuse. You can only drink alcohol in Australia if you are over 18. You are not allowed to sell alcohol to drunk people. You can be arrested if you are drunk and making
Anxiety Anxiety is when you feel stressed, scared and worried all the time. 12% of Australians suffer from anxiety sometime during their lives. The government is researching treatments for people with anxiety. You can get low cost medicine and therapy if you have severe anxiety. Many community organizations help
Many Australians eat a bad diet. They sit down at work, then sit down at home, and do not exercise.
Stroke. Up to 48 000 Australian‟s have a stroke every year. An Australian will have a stroke every 13 minutes. Strokes are the second biggest cause of death in Australia. The government provides funding, nursing, and hospital care to people who have had a stroke and still live.
Heart disease most often happens to people who are fat, smoke, stressed, do not exercise, or who have diabetes or high blood pressure.
39% of Australian‟s are overweight (fat) 21% of Australian‟s are obese (very fat) 60% of Australians are overweight or obese. This is a big health problem.

Common mental health problems in Australia are: •Depression

•Dementia
Depression Depression is when you feel sad and hopeless all the time. 10% of Australian men and 20% of Australian women have depression during their lives. The Australian government provides payments, low cost medicine and free services to people with depression. You can get help at school or university if you have depression.
Drug abuse
38% of Australians have taken illegal drugs at least 1 time, and 15% of Australians use illegal drugs regularly. Marijuana is the most common drug used, then ecstasy. Drug education programs are in every school. If you are caught using drugs, you may have to pay a fine or go to prison.
Gambling Gambling is when you bet money hoping you will win more money. Gambling is legal in Australia, but many people become addicted to gambling, spend all their money, and become poor. 2.1% of Australians have a gambling problem. You must be over 18 to gamble in Australia.
