Reading for Writing

Step I 学习理解

Activity1 :

1.Predict.

Ask students to look at the picture and the title and try to predict what the text is mainly about.

2.Questions.

3.Ask students to read the text and answer the following questions:

(1)What problem did Kayla have in the past?

(2)What does the sentence “I almost went bananas” mean?

(3)What made her change her thinking?

[purpose:]通过阅读健康手册,学生获取Kayla对健康和健身的观点以及她的过去和现在的做法等信息,为写作提供范例。

Step II 应用实践

Activity 2:

1.Study the organization.

2.Study the language features.

Underline the words and phrases used in the text to show similarities and differences. [purpose:]通过分析文本特征和赏析语言特征,学生深度阅读,挖掘主题意义,学习语篇的写作特征,为真实写作提供文章框架。

Activity 3:

1.Brainstorm.

Ask the students to work in groups of four to discuss the questions below in order to collect as many ideas as possible.

Exercise: What can you do to make exercises like jogging more enjoyable?

Stress: How can you plan your work and make sure that you also have time to rest and relax?

Self-confidence: What can you do to become more confident and feel better about yourself?

Food: How can you make your meals healthier?

2.List positive changes.

(1)Go through the questions.

(2)Learn the expressions to show similarities and differences.

Similarities: like, so, too, still, similarly, similar to, the same(---as---),in

common(with), both--and---

Differences: instead , than, however/but/though, different from, rather than, instead of, the difference is------

(3)List positive changes.

Ask the students to wok in groups and list some positive changes.

3.Write.

Ask the students to write a short paragraph to describe and explain your changes according to the following steps:

(1)Start with a general statement about the topic and your situation.

(2)The the reader about how and why you changed or want to change.

(3)Describe the changes and compare the (possible) results.

(4)Tell the reader how the changes have improved or will improve your life.

Step III 迁移创新

Activity 4:

1.Exchange drafts and use the checklist to give feedback on your partners draft.

(1)Does the writer explain why he/she changed/wants to change?

(2)Does the writer tell how the changes have improved or will improve his/her life?

(3)Is the text well-organized?

(4)Does the writer use words and expressions to show similarities and differences?

(5)Are there any grammar or spelling errors?

(6)Does the writer use correct punctuation?

2.Get your draft back and revise it.

3.Collect the entries for a class wellness book.

[purpose]:赏析部分从文章的内容,作者的观点,文章的组织结构,作者的遣词造句,语法或者拼写错误,标点符号使用等方面出发,有效地探讨其与主题意义的关联,批判评价作者的观点,使学生所学语言和多元思维在新语境中表明自己的观点,实现深度学习,从而促进能力向素养转化。
