However, an unexpected incident may strip them of innocence, which is the beginning of real self-respect, because they are driven back upon themselves. They have come to realize the dismal fact that self-respect has nothing to do with the approval of others, and has nothing to do even with reputation.Those who care little about self-respect are inclined to cast up the balance of gains and losses in life. They tend to take such things as their betrayed trusts and subtly broken promises too much to heart. On the contrary, people with self-respect have the courage of mistakes, for they are clear about the prices of things. Therefore, they won’t complain unduly about anything. People with self-respect are ready to run a risk, for they know the elusive odds once they have decided to play a game. To have the sense of one’s intrinsic worth is one of the indispensable elements that constitute self-respect. They have the ability to discriminate, to love and to remain indifferent. To lack self-respect means to be locked within oneself, incapable of either love or indifference. In the final analysis, if we want to have self-respect, we should not drown ourselves in self-reproach, but free ourselves from any disproportionate guilt, and liberate ourselves from the bondage of others’experience, and give us back to ourselves. Only then can we find the unique power of self-respect.When he talks about being human, Lin Yutang elaborates on human dignity. He says that human beings are superior to any other living creatures thanks to human dignity which consists of several elements. First of all, human beings have playful curiosity, which could be the first signs of developing human intelligence. Secondly, human beings have dreams. He eulogizes humor immensely, thinking that humor goes with good sense and the reasonable spirit, plus some subtle power of the mind in detecting inconsistencies and follies and bad logic. Humor is the highest form of human intelligence. Lin Yutang also talks in detail about the doctrine of the individual. He holds that the final judgment of any particular culture is what type of men and women it turns out as far as culture is concerned. He also uses the argument of Confucianism to illustrate his own point that when personal life is cultivated, then home life is regulated; when home life is regulated, then national life is regulated, then the world is at peace.The author holds that the fundamental difference between neat people and sloppy people is moral. The former place neatness above everything else and work on two unvarying principles: Never handle any item twice; and throw everything away. They are clear-minded and objective, but they are so indifferent that people, animals and things are all one to them. In sharp contrast, the latter fill their minds with all kinds of romantic whims and their ideals are just too perfect to come true in reality. What’s more, the latter have a loving heart and seem to show sentimental attachments to everything. In a way, we may conclude that most statesmen and generals fall into the former category while most poets and artists belong to the latter type.The University of Oxford casts a magic spell over many people. It is deemed as a garden where the seeds of beauty and emotion, of wisdom and understanding are sown. Over there, classicalbuildings fuse the intellectual spirit of Greece and the dignified magnificence of Rome. Its special charm lies in melodious bells, stately simplicity, quiet solemnity, unbridled enthusiasm, the tide of youthful life, and ardent hope. All spirits, generous and delicate, pay homage to it and all hearts feel an inexpressible thrill at the sight of its towers and domes, its walls and groves. You are likely to find yourself immersed in the nutriments of classical learning, wondering at imperishable monuments of human civilization, and to find yourself greatly stirred up by the beating pulse of modern life, feeling an urge to create a new world. You are likely to set ideals which extend from immediate success to immortal glory. In a sense, the University of Oxford is not only a school to make you an earthly success, but also a paradise for your spiritual life. So you may enjoy a kind of satisfying isolation if you are granted an opportunity to pursue studies in the University of Oxford.Ignorance is one of the biggest obstacles to our intelligent life. Ignorance about pain is a case in point. Pain is not always the indication of broken health. Many people have little knowledge about the fact that it is frequently the result of stress, worry, idleness, boredom, even insufficient sleep, overeating or inadequate exercise. What is worse, they are most pain-conscious. As a result, doctors’offices are overloaded with people with ailments of pain. The doctors tend to be caught in a dilemma. On one hand, they can find no organic cause of pain in the patient. On the other hand, they are afraid that they may ignore symptoms which could be a warning of a potentially incurable illness. In addition, if ignorance about the nature of pain is widespread, ignorance about the nature of pain-killing drugs will be likewise widespread. The danger of the abuse of pain-killing drugs is that they may deaden the pain without correcting the grave underlying condition. Aspirin is commonly regarded as the king of all pain-killers. And aspirin is permitted to be sold without prescription. However, the drug can be lethal in sustained doses. So it is extremely important to make knowledge about pain and pain-killing drugs part of popular education, so that the individual understands the “threshold”variety of pain, the medicinal substances and side effects of pain-killing drugs and deals with the case of pain properly.People turn themselves into two conflicting forces—conservatives and liberals, owing to their respective opposing philosophical views about life. The former are complacent with the established hierarchies while the latter strive for a new cosmos order which they believe will be superior to the previous one. They each give priorities to totally different things. The former emphasize brilliant past glories while the latter are chiefly concerned about the rosy future. The former base their views on man’s incontestable limitations while the latter stand on his indisputable infinitude of possibilities in improving and perfecting themselves. If the former go too far, they may display some nostalgia for a largely nonexistent past, which may handicap the pursuit of a still better future. If the latter go too far, they tend to cherish some dreams too romantic to be practical. If human life consists of spring, summer, autumn and winter, we are inclined to be liberals in spring and summer, but there is every likelihood that we may turn ourselves into conservatives by degrees in autumn and winter. For example, the famous modernist poet Eliot explored in his early poetry various aspects of decay of civilization in the modern Western world, but he attached much importance to stability and order in his later works.The author holds that there is an essential difference between being international and being cosmopolitan. Being national is an essential prerequisite of fostering international spirit.International peace advocates opposition to war in any form and not a peace after the destruction of nations. He believes that the more a man really appreciates and admires the character of another nation, the less he will attempt to imitate it, for it is too deep to imitate. The problem with most people is that they tend to make a sweeping generalization of thePersonalities and views on life vary from individual to individual. In the light of biological determinism, one cannot escape from hereditary traits. In the light of social determinism, one cannot escape from social environment; in other words, one’s world outlook is largely determined by his economic-social status. In ancient times, people were believed to have four different cardinal humors, namely blood, phlegm, choler and black bile, whose relative proportions in a person determined his mental qualities. Therefore, if most of us should not live alone in a wilderness, we are sure to have various relations with people of different personalities and world outlooks. We should endeavor to make these relations more harmonious so as to enjoy more comfortable surroundings. Firstly we should appreciate diversities rather than feel distressed by diversities. Secondly, we should never intrude on others’privacy, or never ridicule others’tastes. Thirdly, we should take delight in others’pursuits different from our own. Fourthly, we should avoid as far as possible having subjects which are most likely to cause disputation. Fifthly, we should not wish to settle everything by contending endlessly with each other just like two lawyers or two politicians. Sixthly, we should remember that virtues and wisdom may be displayed in various forms. Seventhly, we should cut off as far as possible the means and causes of ill-temper. An increasing number of men and women remain single longer, and are more likely to leave home to pursue a college education, to live with a partner and to launch a career before taking on the responsibility of a family of their own. The hero of the text is also confronted with the dilemma of the marriage crisis: his wish to rebel against the dominance of his wife and break off the bondage of marriage and his lack of courage to turn his wish into reality. His dilemma might be deemed as a reflection of the marriage crisis many middle-aged people have in America.Contemporary sociological theory tends to assign primary importance to the nonmaterial culture in choosing problems for study.
