2018年高考英语专题四 任务型阅读 第二步 真题演练(三) 含答案
真题演练(三)[2015·江苏]People select news in expectation of a reward. This reward may be either of two kinds. One is related to what Freud calls the Pleasure Principle, the other to what he calls the Reality Principle. For want of better names,we shall call these two classes immediate re w ard and delayed re w ard.In general, the kind of news which may be expected to give immediate reward are news of crime and corruption, accidents and disasters, sports, social events, and human interest.Delayed reward may be expected from news of public affairs, economic matters, social problems, science, education, and health.News of the first kind pays its rewards at once.A reader can enjoy an indirect experience without any of the dangers or stresses involved. He can tremble wildly at an axe-murder,shake his head sympathetically and safely at a hurricane, identify himself with the winning team, laugh understandingly at a warm little story of children or dogs.News of the second kind, however, pays its rewards later. It sometimes requires the reader to tolerate unpleasantness or annoyance—as,for example, when he reads of the threatening foreign situation, the mounting national debt, rising taxes, falling market, scarce housing, and cancer. It has a kind of “threat value”.It is read so that the reader may be informed and prepared. When a reader selects delayed reward news,he pulls himself into the world of surrounding reality to which he can adapt himself only by hard work. When he selects news of the other kind,he usually withdraws from the world of threatening reality toward the dream world. For any individual,of course, the boundaries of these two classes are not stable. For example,a sociologist may read news of crime as a social problem, rather than for its immediate reward.A coach may read a sports story for its threat value:he may have to play that team next week.A politician may read an account of his latest successful public meeting, not for its delayed reward, but very much as his wife reads an account of a party. In any given story of corruption or disaster,a thoughtful reader may receive not only the immediate reward of indirect experience, but also the delayed reward of information and preparedness. Therefore, while the division of categories holds in general,an individual’s tendency may transfer any story from one kind of reading to another,or divide the experience between the two kinds of reward.71.答案rewards/rewarded解析本题对应首段首句“People select news in expectation of a reward.”但该空需要变化词形,将a reward变为复数形式,或者用reward的过去分词形式。

2018高考英语模拟卷3第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15题:每小题2分,满分30分)AReading is the key to success in all school subjects. With a bit of creativity, you can help your child enjoy reading more, and encourage him to do more!Buy or borrow a lot of “fun” books. Choose books that are slightly below his level of reading ability. Don’t forget what your child likes to do when choosing books for him. Don’t comment about the books. Simply leave the books lying on the table where your child is sure to see them. Computer games are not as harmful as most parents usually think them to be. Instead, you should take advantage of your child’s love of computer games to purchase those that require a lot of reading and avoid those that are simply computerized video games.Buy your child a bedside reading lamp, or a tiny book light. Tell him that from now on, he must be in bed by a specific time (say 8:30) and that he can either sleep or read. Most kids will do anything else rather than go to sleep, so there’s a chance you’ll create a new bedtime reading habit. Any children will read when they are sitting alone having a snack, or when they have a few minutes of unplanned free time. Put a box of books and magazines near the kitchen table so that reading material is accessible.Often, once children learn to read independently, parents stop reading to them. This change of routine causes great sadness to a child who has come to love falling asleep as you read. Even a teenager will enjoy being read to if you pick books that interest him. Select books together, and make sure they’re ones you enjoy as well, so your enjoyment will come through as you read to them.1.To make children become interested in reading, parents should _______.A. choose the interesting books for children to readB. tell them what they can learn from these booksC. choose books based on parents’ interestD. always read books together with them2.Which of the following is NOT what parents are advised to do?A. Pick the right computer games.B. Read to children when possible.C. Have reading material available.D. Reduce children’s sleeping time.3.What attitude do most parents hold towards children playing computergames?A. Negative.B. Doubtful.C. Supportive.D. Neutral (中立的).4.The main idea of the passage is to ________.A. help children succeed in school subjectsB. teach parents how to encourage children to readC. remind parents of the importance of readingD. give parents advice on how to educate childrenBDo you live in a city where looking up the air quality forecast is just as important as checking the weather forecast for the day? Many places around the world have terrible pollution problems. But now new research suggests that we might be able to protect ourselves naturally and easily— simply by taking vitamin B.The study was conducted by a team of international researchers. Their focus was on a pollutant known as PM2.5. Its size, approximately l/40th the width of a human hair, makes it particularly dangerous because it is readily inhaled and small enough to spread through the body via the blood. This can cause damage to the lungs if PM2.5 is being breathed in regularly. The current experiment involved subjects being exposed to clean air and a placebo(安慰剂) to record baseline responses. They were given the placebo for four weeks, then exposed through a face mask to air from a highly polluted area in downtown Toronto. The researchers measured methylation (甲基化) changes to DNA; the damage increased in each participant. However, in the repeated experiment, when the volunteers were given a vitamin supplement containing 1 milligram of vitamin B12, 50 mg of vitamin B6, and 2.5 mg of folic acid daily for four weeks, it reduced the damage to the DNA by a range of 28 to 76 percent. The results indicate how prevention at an individual level could be used to fight the harmful effects of PM2.5. However, researchers stressed that research was in its early stages. Future studies, especially in heavily polluted areas, are urgently needed and they’ll finally develop preventive measures using B vitamins to prevent the health effects of air pollution.5.How does the author introduce the current experiment?A. By giving examples.B. By comparing results.C. By analyzing causes.D. By describing effects.6.What does the underlined word “inhaled” in Paragraph 1 refer to?A. discovered.B. smelt.C. breathed.D. approached.7.What can be the best title of the text?A. Vitamin B Benefits People MostB. Air Quality Forecast Is Extremely ImportantC. PM2.5 Is Most DeadlyD. Vitamin B Offers Air Pollution Protection8.What can we learn about the researchers in the last paragraph?A. They’ll soon find more ways to test B vitamins.B. They regretted not using enough volunteers.C. They’ll confirm the findings in highly polluted areas.D. They warned people of heavy pollution.CThe Intelligent Transport team at Newcastle University have turned an electric car into a mobile laboratory named"DriveLAB"in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers and to discover where the key stress points are.Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key reasons for a fall in health andwell-being among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated(隔绝)and inactive.Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing in-vehicle technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life. These include custom-made navigation(导航)tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed adaptations.Phil Blythe explains:"For many older people, particularly those living alone or in the country, driving is important for preserving their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others.""But we all have to accept that as we get older our reactions slow down and this often results in people avoiding any potentially challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to."Dr Amy Guo,the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains,"The DriveLAB is helping us to understand what the key points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to address these problems."For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else but surprisingly,we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed and so were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined. We're looking at the benefits of systems which control their speed as a way of preventing that."We hope that our work will help with technological solutions(解决方案)to ensure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel."9.What is the purpose of the Drivel AB?______A. To explore newmeans of transport.B. To design new types of cars.C. To find out older driver′s problems.D. To teach people traffic rules.10.Why is driving important for older people according to Phil Blythe?______A. It keeps them independent.B. It helps them save time.C. It builds up their strength.D. It cures their mental illnesses.11.What do researchers hope to do for older drivers?______A. Improve their driving skills.B. Develop driver-assist technologles.C. Provide tips on repairing their cars.D. Organize regular physical checkups.12.What is the best title for the text?______A. A new Model Electric CarB. A Solution to Traffic ProblemC. 2018年高考英语专题四任务型阅读第三步模拟演练(二)Word版含答案
2018年高考英语专题四任务型阅读第三步模拟演练(二)Word版含答案模拟演练(二)A(2017·南京四校联考)Today,knowledge can be found in any place. With the Internet having become accessible to nearly everyone,it’s now possible to study and get knowledge on any subject without having to attend college,or going for a university course. However,as convenient as it may seem, can learning on your own really match or be even better than traditional education? In the following lines,we examine the advantages of formal education as well as being self-educated.Perhaps the biggest advantage of being self-taught is that you’re able to save a lot of money.T oday,to get a degree, one has to spend thousands of dollars on college fees, books, transportation, etc. However, being self-taught means that you don’t have to pay most of these expenses. You’re only required to spend on important books.Learning by oneself is quite likely to require much time. However,it’s possible to learn faster on your own,by conce ntrating on only those areas you’re interested in.Besides,by being self-taught,you’ll be able to avoid unimportant subjects and instead concentrate only on those that are necessary for the field you want to get into. What’s more, unlike a formal education system, there are no set rules when you choose to self-educate.You aren’t supposed to read a particular book, watch a video, take a test, etc.,at particular times. This lets you manage your study timebased on your own convenience. You can thus work full-time and at the same time learn part-time,which makes you gain income as well as valuable real-time work experience. However, there are also advantages of formal education. For example, you can get a college degree which means you’ve achieved a level of knowledge in that particular field. Many companies tend to prefer those who have a college degree. So,if you possess a degree, you naturally gain an advantage over other people while looking for a job.College and university curriculums are designed to offer as complete a level of knowledge on the subject as possible. These curriculums are based on tried and tested methods, which make sure you get to learn a subject in the best, and the most complete manner.Being formally educated also means that you’ll get into a college or university, where you will be guided by learned teachers and other subject experts. Thus, both formal education and self-education have their own advantages.Neither is better than the other. In the end,the choice between the two comes down to personal preference and situation.Self-education and Formal EducationB(2017·南通一模)What have we become?A society in which someone can have hundreds of online friends and yet go for days without human contact. We scan;we click;we text people in the next room instead of speaking to them;we even check our library books out by ourselves when once we might have chatted to a friendly person with an ink pad and a date stamp.Loneliness can be dangerous.Recent research suggests that it may shorten people’s lives and make them more vulnerable to serious illness. It can distort(扭曲) senses of reality and even become an element that drives a few desperate young men toopen fire on a cinema audience or a classroom full of children.Electronic voices on various devices can be the only ones some people hear. And what those voices say is not always true.No man is an island,we are frequently reminded. There are those who choose to lead solitary(孤独的) lives, and live them well, but on the whole we are sociable beings and we suffer if we are on our own too much.Human contact makes us happier, although virtual relationships can be very positive. So what could lonely people do to make real friends? An answer, among many,is to read more books.Reading begins alone but becomes a shared activity when a reader, for example, joins a book group, attends a literary festival or signs up for a continuing education course on an aspect of literature that interests them. There’s no shame in turning up to any of these alone, and fellowship is guaranteed.Fellow readers may well turn out to be like-minded;it’s a basis for new friendships and sustained relationships.Sharing an understanding of a book is a good way of sharing feelings safely.Literary characters can be useful as personas. But there is another important reason why everyone should read more books, and in particular fiction. The responsibility to fight loneliness lies with those who do not suffer from it.Lonely people often feel that there is no one who understands them or can share their point of view. They need to know that actually there are. That requires everybody else to make the imaginative leap of feeling that connection, and reading fiction helps. It makes people more empathic(移情)—sympathy for fictitious(虚构的) characters can translate into compassion(同情) in real life. The stories of strangers reach us through many means:not only news bulletins, interviews, biography and memoir(回忆录),but also drama and fiction.Walking a mile in their shoes might help turn some of those strangers into real friends.C(2017·南京、盐城一模)Until about 18 years ago,it was widely assumed that most of brain development occurs in the first few years of life. But recent research on the human brain has shown that many brain regions undergo prolonged development throughout adolescence and beyond in humans. This advancement in knowledge has increased old worries and given rise to newones. It is hugely worrying that so many teenagers around the world don’t have access to education at a time when their brains are still developing and being shaped by the environment. We should also worry about our lack of understanding of how our rapidly changing world is shaping the developing teenage brain.Decades of research on early neurodevelopment suggested that the environment influences brain development.During the first few months or years of life,an animal must be exposed to particular visual or auditory stimuli(听觉刺激) for the associated brain cells and connections to develop. In this way, neuronal circuitry(神经元回路) is shaped according to the environment during “sensitive periods” of brain development. This research has focused mostly on early development of sensory brain regions. What about later development of higher-level brain regions, which are involved in decision-making,control and planning,as well as social understanding and self-awareness?We know these brain regions continue to develop throughout adolescence. However,we have very little knowledge about how environmental factors influence the developing teenage brain. This is something that should concern us.There’s a lot of concern about the hours some teenagers spend online and playing video games. But maybe all this worry is misplaced. After all, throughout history humans have worried about the effects of new technologies on the minds of the next generation. When the printing press was invented, there was anxiety about reading corrupting young people’s minds, and the same worries were repeated for the invention of radio and television.Maybe we shouldn’t be worried at all. It’s possible that the developing brains of today’s teenagers are going to bethe most adaptable,creative,multi-tasking brains that have ever existed. There is evidence—fromadults—that playing video games improves a range of cognitive functions such as divided attention and working memory.Much less is known about how gaming, social networking and so on,influence the developing adolescent brain. We don’t know whether the effects of new technologies on the developing brain are positive, negative or neutral. We need to find out.Adolescence is a period of life in which the brain is developing and shapable, and it represents a good opportunity for learning and social development. However, according to UNICEF,40% of the world’s teenagers do not have access to secondary school education. The percentage of teenage girls who have no access to education is much higher, and yet there is strong evidence that the education of girls in developing countries has multiple significant benefits for family health, population growth rates, child mortality rates,HIV rates as well as for w omen’s self-esteem and quality of life.Adolescence represents a time of brain development when teaching and training should be particularly beneficial.I worry about the lost opportunity of denying the world’s teenagers access to education.。

lectures given to two women’s colleges at Cambridge University in 1928.In it,Woolf describes that it’s circumstance not talent alone that allows men to be more successful at writing.Women,in other words, spend so much time cooking, cleaning, and tending to their children that they have no time left for art.To write well, therefore,a woman must have “a room of her own”.While on its surface, this essay appears to be only about writing,it is actually about wealth and class, freedom and imprisonment, and the power struggle between sexes. The Art of WarWritten by ancient Chinese military strategist listening to the music.Just a few hours before the Bombadils started singing at the O’ Hair Salon,Lindsay was cutting hair and Tamera was doing facials. Then, they moved chairs and microphones to create a small performance space. The Bombadils made music in the front part of the hair salon, near the hairdryers and make-up tables.“This is our first show at a hair salon,” Sarah Frank of the Bombadils told concertgoers at last week’s performance.Frank said she and band members,Luke Fraser and Kaitlyn Raitz had a great time “interacting” with the audience.Concerts in people’s homes,or small headmaster in confusion.“I never mentioned wanting to go to Hungary.” And with that,my adventure started. My name is Jonathan Diamond and I just finished an amazing school exchange year in Hungary.Going on an exchange had always been my dream. When my high school offered an all-year program,I jumped at the opportunity. It would pay for almost everything and all I had to do was buy a plane ticket.I knew where I wanted to go:Spain, the country of dancers wearing flowing red dresses. So when I heard that I was going to Hungary,I was pretty shocked. But I decided to make the best of it,since it was, after all,a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Before I knew it,I was on the airplane, leaving for Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport,Hungary.I had difficult times when I almost gave up.Hungarian is the hardest language on the planet.Cultural differences occasionally embarrassed both my peers and me.I had to give up eating carrots,my beautiful favorite, for Hungarians think carrots are rubbish in their country. The change in the landscape was amazing, looking nothing like skyscrapers, bullet trains, cars, and people in tiny houses that I had been accustomedto.Gradually,I fell in love with the relaxing lifestyle, the warm-hearted people, and getting home at 2:30 p.m.at the latest from school. And I was sad to leave on my very last day.Having the host family who took me as one of their own members was the best thing I’ve ever experienced. From my little sisters,I learned how to embrace life to its fullest. From my brothers I learned that it’s OK for a boy to run around the house. From my host parents I learned to stay positive,to smile and that when you pick the right people and take their hands, suddenly, you become friends.28.How did Jonathan feel when he was told to go to carrots.B.He couldn’t wait to leave.C.He was surprised by the landscape.D.He quickly got used to the life there.31.According to Jonathan, the host family .A.changed him completelyB.taught him how to dance wellC.treated him as equally as a studentD.showed him the good things of lifeDSome pigs tend to be optimistic while others are pessimistic, according to a new research that is meaningful to animal welfare. The study, published in the journal Biology Letters,is the first to show that mood and personality interact in an animal, influencing judgment.Asher,a researcher at the University of Newcastle’s Institute of Neuroscience, and her team housed groups of pigs in two types of environment. One reflected standard commercial conditions and the other was cushier with more space and plenty of soft, deep straw. After the pigs got accustomed to these new homes over a few weeks, the researchers picked 18 pigs from each type to train and test their judgment.“To do this,we trained each pig.In one corner of a training room there would be a bowl with chocolate sweets—pigs love them—and at theopposite side of the room there would be a bowl containing coffee beans, which pigs find bitter-tasting,” a researcher said.Over a number of training trials, pigs learned to go to the bowl reliably when it was in the corner where they had figured out to expect chocolate sweets. On the contrary, they quickly learned to avoid the bowl when it was in the corner where they would expect to find the coffee beans. The researchers next placed an unfamiliar bowl in different locations,to see how the pigs would react. Some gaily dashed to the bowl no matter what was inside, showing optimism that it would contain their favorite sweets.Others, however, behaved as though they expected it to contain coffee beans, displaying pessimism. The findings suggest that a one-size-fits-all answer to animal welfare issues does not exist.Even if pigs are just equal to bacon or other meat for some people, there is still cause for concern.Studies have suggested that how an animal is treated during its lifetime can directly affect meat quality and taste.32.What was the study trying to figure out?A.How to make pigs happier.B.The similarities between humans and pigs.C.How living environment affected pigs’ mood.D.How pigs’ mood and personality affected their judgment.33.What does the underlined word “cushier” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Simple.B.More comfortable.C.Unpractical.D.Less free.34.Which bowl can test whether a pig is optimistic or pessimistic?A.The bowl with chocolate sweets.B.The bowl containing coffee beans.C.The bowl full of both sweets and beans.D.The bowl unfamiliar to two types of pigs.35.What do the findings of the new research imply?A.People should treat pigs equally.B.People’s health relies on meat quality.C.People should meet pigs’ various needs.D.People’s attitude toward pigs is totally wrong.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

2018年高考英语专题四 任务型阅读 第三步 模拟演练(三) 含答案
模拟演练(三)A(2017·南京学情调研)A backpack-carried digital nose that sniffs out improvised explosive devices(IEDs) and other threats promises to ease checkpoint duty for troops stationed in hot spots around the world.Developed by Scent Detection Technologies(SDT),a small privately owned company based in Herzliya, Israel, the militarized mininose—trademarked MN- 2000-MIL—detects and identifies IEDs,rigged vehicles(伪装的车辆) and other hazards by the vapors or traces particles(微粒)left on skin, machinery and personal belongings.Soon to enter mass production, the MN2000-MIL is a ruggedized(强化的) version of the firm’s MiniNose-2000 designed for use by law enforcement and security personnel. It is a second-generation version of the firm’s MN1000,which has been purchased by several Asian countries, including China, which introduced the system for the Beijing Olympics.Like its former products, the system is based on company-patented High-Frequency Quartz Crystal Microbalance(HFQCM) technology that digitally imitates mammalian olfactory(嗅觉的) sense capable of learning to recognize new substance.“It works like a supersensitive digital nose able to detect very low nanolevel(纳米级) amounts of any source substance,” SDT Chief Executive Officer Bengal said.“We then teach it to identify substances by matching them with a library of threats we’ve programmed into the machine.”“The entire analysis process,” Bengal said,“takes 8 to 26 seconds, depending on the substances.”Unlike other trace detection systems on the market, which are based on radioactive-source Ion Mobility Spectrometry technology,SDT’s QCM-based system contains no radioactive parts.“Ion Mobility Spectrometry systems are essentially radioactive,” Bengal said.“You need special licensing to sell them and specially trained personnel to service them. But we’re using essentially green technology. You don’t need trained technicians to operate or even open our machines.”In the two years since SDT began producing the MN2000 for the homeland security market, the system has demonstrated its ability to operate for months at a time without servicing or technical repairs.Bengal said the new military model will be much stronger,as it was designed to operate in dust, heavy fog and otherwise extreme field conditions.B(2017·盐城期中调研)One of the keys to successful time management is prioritizing tasks and distinguishing optional activities from the essential.Whether you are writing different “to-do’s”in different colors of ink or are giving each list item a priority ranking, your decisions about the importance of activities will have a huge impact on how you spend your day. Most of those who run their own business tend to develop a deep and strong commitment to work and to the overall success of their endeavors.Long hours are a norm, sleep appears to be optional and almost every effort is poured into growing the business. However, those who overemphasize work-related activities at the expense of truly essential projects may actually see their time management collapse. That’s because neglect of essential projects will make life, overall, less meaningful and enjoyable. At some point, the mere process of chasing after money will no longer subconsciously justify the disregard of some very important things. What are these essential tasks? They have nothing to do with record keeping, taxes, improving advertising copy or handling customer relations.Instead, they involve being a good father,a good wife and a good person. These chores are the ones that give us a reason to have our financial goals. We work in the first place for these things.Your essential projects will be determined by your own personal preferences and lifestyle. Those with strong religious beliefs will consider worship essential. Those who feel the needto exercise in order to relax will label physical activity as an essential activity. It’s too easy to let these important things slide to the back burner when one is under pressure to produce or to grow their business. One invests a great deal of himself or herself in creating a successful project and it can feel as though spending every waking hour at work is more important than virtually anything else. This perspective, however intuitive it may seem to one looking for ways to improve his or her time management skills,is actually a dead end.Over time, one will notice their motivation for work-related efforts slipping away. That inevitability arises from a subconscious recognition of life’s declining value, possible feelings of guilt, and a recognition that one is simply not meeting his or her most important responsibilities and commitments. As you triage your activities as a part of your time management strategies, resist the temptation to elevate those tasks directly related to working above other truly essential responsibilities.By maintaining a proper balance you can invigorate(使有活力) your efforts and live a fuller, more meaningful life.Work isn’t incompatible(矛盾的) with being a fulfilled person. On the contrary,a great work ethic and a successful business can lead to a great deal of fulfillment. However, when important non-work tasks are classified to the bottom of a “to-do”list,it surely results in negative consequences.C(2017·无锡期中调研)Looking back at my younger years,I am sometimes amazed at how life has turned out.Nothing is exactly what I had originally planned for.The only thing that stays the same is who I am,my values, and my interests. If I could go back in time and hang out with my younger self for a day, here’s what I would tell her.1.Everything happens for a reason.Without mistakes and failure, you would never have learned.Without pain, you would never have grown. So don’t stress or think that life is unfair because everything happens for a reason. And only time will tell what it will teach us.2.Focus on one thing at a time. You can have it all but not all at once.It is not surprising that many of us are doing too many things at once.We need to make ends meet. But if you are working three jobs at a time,it is not likely that you will succeed at any of them. You have to keep your eyes on the big picture. You have to ask yourself what exactly you want to achieve for the next 10 years.Focus on one thing at a time.Achieve your goals one by one.3.You can plan in advance, but your plan will definitely change when the time comes. You can plan in advance because sometimes planning in advance can give you a clearer direction of where you want to go.However, plans will almost always change,so be prepared!4.Trust your instincts(直觉).Don’t worry too much about a decision you have to make.Just do what feels right. You know what you want. You might consult other people. But deep down, you know what you want.Do what makes you happy.Because at the end of the day, even if you follow logic, you will want to quit and follow your heart.5.It’s okay to be unsure about your purpose in life. You might be graduating or have hit a turning point with your career. You might feel a bit lost and unsure of where to go.It’s okay.Go out there and try as many different things as you can.Don’t ever feel like you’re wasting your time.Enjoy the journey.Don’t rush.Every little path will lead you somewhere. And looking back, you will be able to connect the dots.It will all make sense.6.Don’t try too hard with people.Don’t worry if you feel like it’s hard to make new friends.Just be yourself and be as open as you can.It might take a while until you find new best friends and a mate for life, but when you do,you will know it.It’s not hard work. So,just do your thing and be yourself.。

correctly —the very mode of transportation that many American schools insist is the only safe way to deliver kids to school is now considered illegal in the UK.The decision to fine any vehicles seen dropping off or picking up kids within a particular zone of east London comes from city councilors’(议员) long-term efforts to make the area safer and less crowded. They say they’ve been trying for years “to encourage reasonable parking”,but in vain.Neighborhood residents complain frequently about their driveways being blocked by illegallyparked cars for 15 minutes or more, often while they’re trying to get to work, and the streets are long overcrowded. Now the rules have changed. Some parents are angry.Angie is a mother who made the “big hammer”comment and says the crackdown is “way over the top”.The nearest drop-off point for her six-year-old is now a five-minute walk from the school.Others are happy with the decision, severe though it may seem.Councilor Jason Frost said,“Traffic has been clearly reduced, and more children are now walking to school, which is a great outcome.I would rather have complaints that we are slightly inconveniencing parents than hear that a child had been seriously injured because nothing was done.”I witness daily the chaos (混乱) created by these in-town drivers, when I walk my own kids to school. There’s a parking lot crowded with vehicles and a slow-moving train of cars moving in circles, many filling the air with harmful smoke.Meanwhile, the conversations around overweight children and the importance of daily physical activities continue to stand out in schools.32.Why is Angie opposed to the new rule?A.She is often fined by London police.B.She will lose her job as a school driver.C.She has adapted to the American practice.D.She thinks it pollution.34.What can be seen after the crackdown is carried out?A.Less daily chaos.B.Support from all people.C.More overweight children.plaints from neighbors.35.What is the main idea of the text?A.Parents attempt to resist a school rule.B.London police cause widespread anger.C.American schools care more about kids’safety.D.Different voices are heard on a new traffic After many tiring book-signing tours from city to city,Atwood thought there must be a better way to do them. She hired some technical experts and started her own company in2004.Together they designed the LongPen.Here’s how it works:The author writes a personal message and signature on a computer tablet(手写板) using a special pen.On the receiving end,in another city,a robotic arm fitted with a regular pen signs the book. The author and fan can talk with each other via webcams(网络摄像机) and computer screens. Work on the LongPen began in Atwood’s basement. At first, they had no idea it would be as hard as it turned out to be.The device went through several versions, including one that actually had smoke coming out of it.The investing finally completed, test runs were made in Ottawa, and the LongPen was officially launched at the 2006 London Book Fair. From here,Atwood conducted two transatlantic book signings of her latest book for fans in Toronto and New York City. The LongPen produces a unique signature each time because it copies the movement of the author in real time.It has several other potential applications. It could increase credit card security and allow people to sign contracts from another province. The video exchange between signer and receiver can be recorded on DVD for proof when legal documents are used. “It’s really fun,” said the owner of a bookstore,wh o was present for one of the test runs.“Obviously you can’t shake hands with the author, but there are chances for a connection that you don’t get from a regular book signing.” The response to the invention has not been all favorable.Atwoodhas received cri ticism from authors who think she’s trying to end book tours. But she said,“It will be possible to go to places that you never got sent to before because the publishers couldn’t afford it.” 语篇解读本文介绍了一种特殊的、可以让作者在很远的城市为读者远程签字的签字笔the LongPen,并介绍了这种发明的起因以及发明过程。

模拟演练(二)A(2017·南京四校联考)Today,knowledge can be found in any place. With the Internet having become accessible to nearly everyone,it’s now possible to study and get knowledge on any subject without having to attend college,or going for a university course. However,as convenient as it may seem, can learning on your own really match or be even better than traditional education? In the following lines,we examine the advantages of formal education as well as being self-educated.Perhaps the biggest advantage of being self-taught is that you’re able to save a lot of money.Today,to get a degree, one has to spend thousands of dollars on college fees, books, transportation, etc. However, being self-taught means that you don’t have to pay most of these expenses. You’re only required to spend on important books.Learning by oneself is quite likely to require much time. However,it’s possible to learn faster on your own,by concentrating on only those areas you’re interested in.Besides,by being self-taught,you’ll be able to avoid unimportant subjects and instead concentrate only on those that are necessary for the field you want to get into. What’s more, unlike a formal education system, there are no set rules when you choose to self-educate.You aren’t supposed to read a particular book, watch a video, take a test, etc.,at particular times. This lets you manage your study time based on your own convenience. These curriculums are based on tried and tested methods, which make sure you get to learn a subject in the best, and the most complete manner.Being formally educated also means that you’ll get into a college or university, where you will be guided by learned teachersand other subject experts. It can distort(扭曲) senses of reality and even become an element that drives a few desperate young men to open fire on a cinema audience or a classroom full of children.Electronic voices on various devices can be the only ones some people hear. But recent research on the human brain has shown that many brain regionsundergo prolonged development throughout adolescence and beyond in humans. This advancement in knowledge has increased old worries and given rise to new ones.It is hugely worrying that so many teenagers around the world don’t have access to education at a time when their brains are still developing and being shaped by the environment. It’s possible that the developing brains of today’s teenagers are going to be the most adaptable,creative,multi-tasking brains that have ever existed. There is evidence—from adults—that playing video games improves a range of cognitive functions such as divided attention and working memory.Much less is known about how gaming, social networking and so on,influence the developing adolescent brain. The percentage of teenage girls who have no access to education is much higher, and yet there is strong evidence that the education of girls in developing countries has multiple significant benefits for family health, population growth rates, child mortality rates,HIV rates as well as for women’s self-esteem and quality of life.Adolescence represents a time of brain development when teaching and training should be particularly beneficial.I worry about the lost opportunity of denying the world’steenagers access to education.。
