Even though this comfort area and its boundaries are just a state of mind that has nothing to do with reality, it plays a huge role in the progress of our development. Since the comfort zone is limited, there is not much benefit for you inside your comfort zone. Nothing new will happen until you open yourself and leave your comfort zone.As long as you still having the same beliefs, you cannot grow and expect new things in your life. When you change your beliefs, you will change your thoughts, feelings and actions, and only then you can expend and grow in all aspects in your life.Even though your background may be affecting your present situation, what really matters is not where you were born, your skin color, race, age, gender, religion, government, or even the poor environment in which you have been living for so many years, but what really matters and makes a big difference in your life is your attitude, to understand your comfort zone, how you limit yourself within it, who you are, why you behave the way you do it, and mainly where you are going.Sadly many people don't go anywhere because they stay within their comfort zone. They accept defeat after defeat before even trying or knowing how capable or valuable they really are. These circumstances are not the cause of our actual situation but the conformism (因循守旧) and the poverty of our thoughts and therefore the weakness of our broken spirit. Leave your past behind; constantly transcend (超越)your comfort zone! Your past within this comfort zone is nothing but a wasted load that you don't need to carry at all.Take constant action as many times as it is required and never, never quit. As Napoleon Hill said, “A quitter never wins and a winn er never quits. Defeat is never a failure; no circumstance ever is failure until it is accepted by the individual as a failure.” Nothing is impossible for an optimist attitude; everything is possible when we start blindly trusting ourselves, when we have a burning desire to succeed and a blind determination to make our dreams come true; everything is possible when we don't take a no for an answer.25. What is comfort zone according to the passage?A.A place in our realistic life where we obtain comfort.B.A mental place in our mind where we stick to our beliefs.C.A limited place in our mind where we feel safe.D.A secret place in our mind where we communicate with ourselves.26. The author believes staying in our comfort zone can________.A. prevent us from being aware of the realityB. protect us from the cruel realityC. push our development in lifeD. stop us making progress in life27. Napoleon Hill is quoted (引用) in the last paragraph to show that________.A.one should not quit in order to succeedB. there is a great difference between defeat and failureC.it is important to take constant actionsD. a successful person can't leave his comfort zone28.What is NOT necessary for us to succeed?A.A blind determination.B. Refusing to have a no for an answerC. An optimistic attitude.D. The poor environment in which we live.29.The writing style of this passage can be described as________.A. defensive(防守的)B. persuasive(有说服力的)C. subjective(主观的)D. supportive(支持的)CI was sitting in a taxi, wondering if I had overdressed for the evening, when I looked out of the window and saw Mother rooting through(翻找) a dustbin. It was just after dark in March. People hurried along the sidewalks with their collars turned up. I was stuck in traffic two blocks from the party where I was heading.Mother stood fifteen feet away. She had tied rags around her shoulders to keep out the spring cold and was rooting through the dustbin. Her gestures were all familiar ——the way she tilted(倾斜) her head when studying items of potential value, the way her eyes widened with childish joy when she found something she liked. She probably looked like any of the thousands' of homeless people in New York City. But still she reminded me of the mother. She'd been painting in the desert and reading Shakespeare aloud. It had been months since I laid eyes on Mom, and when she looked up, I was overcome with panic that she would see me and call out my name, and that someone on the way to the same party would see us together and that my secret would be out.I slid down in the seat and asked the driver to turn around and take me home. The taxi stopped in front of my building, the doorman held the door for me, and the elevator man took me up to my floor. The apartment was silent except for the click of my heels on the polished wood floor. I still panicked for seeing Mother rooting happily through the dustbin. I put some Vivaldi on, hoping the music would settle me down.I looked around the room. There were bronze-and-silver vases and books with worn leather spines(书脊). There were the Georgian maps I'd had framed and overstuffed(有厚软垫的) leather armchair I liked to sink into. I'd tried to turn the apartment into the sort of place where the person I wanted to be would live. But I could never enjoy it without worrying about my parents on a sidewalk or somewhere else. I was ashamed of myself for wearing pearls and living on Park Avenue while they were busy keeping warm and finding something to eat. What could I do? I'd tried to help them countless times, but Father would insist they didn't need anything, and Mother would ask for something silly, like a perfume atomizer(喷雾器) . They said that they were living the way they wanted to.After sliding down in the taxi, I hated myself——hated my clothes and my apartment. I had to do something, so I called a friend of Mother's and left a message. It was our system of staying in touch. We met for lunch at a restaurant.Mother was sitting at a booth, studying the menu when I arrived. She waved heartily when she saw me. "It's my baby girl!" she called out.We ordered. She started talking about Picasso. She'd seen a retrospective(回顾展) of hiswork.“I'm worried about you,”I said. “Tell me what I can do to help.”Her smile faded. “What makes you think I need your help?”“ Mother, I'm not rich. But I want to do whatever could help you change your life and make it better.”“Help me change my life? I'm fine. You're the one who needs help. Your values are all confused.”"Mother, I saw you rooting through trash in the East Village.""Well, people in this country are too wasteful. It's my way of recycling." She took a bite of her food. "Why didn't you say hello?""I was too ashamed, Mother. ”"You see?" Mother pointed her chopsticks at me. "That's exactly what I'm saying. You're too easily embarrassed. Your father and I are who we are. Accept it.""And what am I supposed to tell people about my parents?"“Just tell the truth," Mom said. "That's simple enough.”30.When the author saw her mother,A. it was a cold day in winterB. she was driving her car to a partyC. it had been days since they last metD. she was stuck in traffic in the East Village31. What can we learn about Mother?A. She lived a miserable life.B. She enjoyed the way she lived.C. She didn't have a good education.D. She couldn't live better because of lacking money.32.What does the underlined part, “my secret”, in the third paragraph, probably refer to?A. The nickname Mother called the author.B. That the author talked to a woman rooting through the trash.C. That the author's parents didn't have a satisfactory life.D. The author's panic in unexpectedly seeing her mother.33.The author provided details about her apartment to show that sheA. made every effort to live in a decent(体面的)wayB. enjoyed her-good life in every wayC. lived where the person she wanted to be would liveD. was rich enough to help her poor parents.34.In the author's opinion, rooting through a dustbin is_________.A. a way of reusing the wasted thingsB. a good method to save moneyC. an interesting way to kill timeD. done by someone who is very poor35. According to Mother, the author needed help because she_________.A. desired a good life to liveB. wasted too many things in her daily lifeC. was too easily ashamed to greet herD. cared too much about what others would think about her第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能够填入空白处的最佳选项。

Small in size, but with impressive technology, Astro is seemingly similar to Amazon’s popular virtual assistant. With all the same capabilities as Alexa, many critics are asking why there’s a need for Astro.Answering this question, Amazon’s Vice-President of Products, Charlie Tritschler, highlights some unique features of Astro that make it a different kind of robot. Astro can move on its own and follow people, offering consumers a far broader range of options. Besides, it can monitor home security. Astro uses Artificial Intelligence to learn more about household members by interacting with users. Users can also register themselves and others into its recognition system. When they leave home, they can make an away mode, which means “Sentry (哨兵) Mode”, or “Patrol Mode” start working. If someone who is not recognized enters the house, Astro will follow and record them. Astro’s mobility seems to be the key feature in its technological enhancement, but what appeals to people most is its “unique persona”. Its big, circular, blinking “eyes” displayed on its screen-like head making it look rather cute are a big reason for this.Years of research show that humans often experience positive emotional connections with robots. According to MIT’s technology review of Astro, it may not fall far from this observation.People have come to love robotic pets, though they are fully aware that the pets are lifeless. Robots at home can play a useful role in helping elderly patients fight loneliness or young children face social anxiety.Amazon is offering people interested in Astro the chance to sign up for Day 1 Editions, a program giving invitations to Astro as soon as it goes on the market later this year. Tritschler is encouraging people to personalize the robot when it becomes available, and he is confident that users will come up with more ideas and features they will want to see in the robot in the near future to make it even better.8.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?A.The convenient operation of Astro.B.The essential functions of Astro.C.The increasing popularity of Astro.D.The distinctive capabilities of Astro. 9.Which aspect of Astro attracts people most?A.Its recognition system.B.Its ability to move on its own.C.Its adorable appearance.D.Its ability to monitor home security. 10.What is Tritschler’s attitude to the future of Astro?A.Critical.B.Positive.C.Uncertain.D.Doubtful. 11.What is the best title for the text?A.Astro: A Robot Assistant B.The New Revolution of AIC.Astro: An Emotional Relief D.The Great Potential of RobotsMany older people around the world have at least one common concern: How to get younger people, hooked on their electronic devices, interested in classic art. Take the Monkey King, or Sun Wukong, as an example. The main character in the 16th-century classic novel, Journey to the West, is a romantic figure of bravery and adventure that charmed millions of readers before the appearance of online attractions.Havoc in Heaven, a new Peking Opera film, attracted the wider public to the glamor of the traditional Chinese performance art, featuring one of the best-known chapters from Journey to the West. This film, expected to create a new channel to promote Peking Opera, includes nearly all the key ingredients of Peking Opera. It covers all the basic techniques, more than 10 classic tunes, and makeup for dozens of facial representations of different figures’ characteristics. It’s actually a big challenge to combine Peking Opera and film, each of which has its own rhythm, according to Cheng Lu, director of the film, who is adopting a fresh approach to present the traditional art form. One challenge that Cheng and his production team faced is how to balance the new approach with maintaining the fundamentals of the art. The basic principles and performance skills in Peking Opera cannot be changed. For example, performances in Peking Opera often emphasize symbolism over the accurate representation of motion. There are never real horses on stage, and the film reflects that. And when Sun Wukong eats peaches, he merely copies the action of eating without taking a bite. Some background images on stage, such as a painted waterfall, remain, and a live band was on the set to provide sound for the film, rather than employing the pre-recorded music. “If we change traditions to cater to people’s taste and preference for a regular film, it will no longer be a Peking Opera piece of art,” Cheng said.On the other hand, some creativity was needed because Cheng and his team did not just want to document a stage performance. Computer technology is also applied to achieve some visual effects and to present impossible scenes, such as explosions or the heavenly court floating in the clouds. Also, the filming process leaves no room for actors to make the slightest mistake in front of cameras, such as those that would probably go unnoticed in an opera house.Peking Opera films played a powerful role in the 1960s and 70s, but their popularity gave way to more diverse entertainment. In recent years, there has been a recovery in the popularity of Peking Opera films. However, the overuse of special effects in many film adaptations of Peking Opera plays has weakened the original charm of the stage performances. The imagination (enabled by the stage) can never be sacrificed for a film’s expression.12.What is the purpose of the first paragraph?A.To blame young people addicted to electronic devices.B.To advertise a new Peking Opera film, Havoc in Heaven.C.To express older people’s concern about the young generation.D.To arouse readers’ interest in traditional Chinese performance art.13.What did Director Cheng do while producing the film?A.He made changes to basic performance skills.B.He made use of symbols and motions equally.C.He insisted on a band playing music on the scene.D.He brought onto the stage exact details of real life.14.What innovation did Cheng’s team make?A.They opposed a rigid recording of the performance.B.They enriched visual effects with modern technology.C.They allowed actors to repeat actions before the camera.D.They adopted real explosion scenes during the shooting.15.What can we conclude from the last paragraph?A.Imagination is a unique charm of Peking Opera films.B.Technology makes up for the loss of stage imagination.C.There is some possibility for a film to replace Peking Opera.D.The original charm of Peking Opera cannot be sacrificed for films.Improving your focus can make you a better student or employee as well as a happier and more organized person. 16Create a clean environment. When it’s a task where you are seated at a desk, then you will need to clean the desk area and become more organized. Let’s suppose you are trying to quit smoking. 17 In other words, on your quit date the house and car you occupy need to be “smokeless” in every way. No ashtrays, lighters, etc.18 For example, if your intention is to be a non-smoker then you are more likely to succeed hanging out in a local gym instead of a local bar. Choose the right place, and you can cut out the distractions you have control over and minimize the ones you can’t stop completely.Focus on one task at a time. Though many people think that multi-tasking is a great way to accomplish goals more quickly and to get two or three things done at once, multi-tasking is actually harmful to your concentration. Occupied with many tasks, you may think you’re getting more done. 19 Therefore, work on getting just one thing done at a time and you’ll see that you get this done more quickly.20 Do this in writing in outline form, and breaking down the steps can help your mind from not getting overwhelmed.A.Set small steps and short term goals.B.Create the environment to allow this to be possible.C.Make a list of goals at the beginning of every day or week.D.Select a proper place where you are most likely to be able to focus.E.If you really want to get good grades, you should keep yourself from getting distracted. F.However,it will harm your concentration not to put all of your focus and energy into only one task.G.If you want to improve your focus, you need to learn how to avoid distractions before accomplishing a task.二、完形填空Maybe it's my love of baseball that connects my aunt Helen and me. 江苏省无锡市2023-2024学年高一上学期期终教学质量抽测英语试卷(含答案)
江苏省无锡市2023-2024学年高一上学期期终教学质量抽测英语试卷一、阅读理解(本大题共4小题)Liz Pichon, known for her bcstselling Tom Gates series for children, shares the books that shaped her.The Bad Speller by William SteigReading this as a child was a life-changing moment. Although I loved reading, I found it quite difficult. My mum had an American friend who bought me this book because she knew how much I struggled with spelling, and she thought it would make me laugh. It really did. And it stuck in my memory a lot. Even now, it’s one of those books that never seems to age. I love the drawings—they planted a seed in my head somewhere that pictures and words go together and can be really funny.Silly Verse for Kids by Spike MilliganThis book is so tiny and thin, but I loved that it had all these silly poems inside with rich attractive drawings—and it made me want to write rhymes, and to have a go at drawing. After buying this in a local bookshop, I started reading it. And after finishing reading it, I started writing my own poetry. I’m always including silly poems in my books and I think that’s definitely down to the influence of this book.Jaws by Peter BenchleyThis book has a particular meaning for me. In school, I h ad a teacher who didn’t have a television. It made me think when I had to come up with a story for my homework, I could just change the plot of Jaws a little and he’d never know. When he read it, he thought it was amazing. I tell that story to children now, because copying other people’s stories is a great way of learning how to do things—by seeing how other people do them.1.What is the purpose of the text?A.To explain three bestsellers of Liz Pichon. D.In the education column of a magazine. If you thought that your child’s academic performance is based simply on the number of hours spent on studying, you are wrong. Good grades are a result of multiple factors, everything from the child’s brains to the environment they are in. And one of the major, mostly ignored, influencing factor is physical health. Physical activity and health actually can improve a person’s ability to learn. According to the National Academy of Medicine, exerc ise can improve a child’s cognitive abilities, health, and academic performance significantly.According to a study by the University of British Columbia, regular aerobic exercise betters the functioning of the hippocampus, the area of the brain involved in learning and memory. Other forms of exercise like balance exercises, muscle exercises, and resistance training did not have the same result on the brain. The effect of exercise on memory and thinking is both direct and indirect. Directly, regular exercise gives the ability to increase the release of growth factors. These growth factors are chemicals in the brain that affect the growth of new blood vessels, the health of brain cells, as well as the survival of new brain cells. On the other hand, getting enough exercise will improve sleep quality and mood. It will also reduce stress and anxiety. It is believed that the benefits of exercise during the school day are greater than those coming from increasing class time. Furthermore, the greatest cognitive benefits from physical education have been seen to come about when physical education was given either in the first half of the day or midday rather than at the end of the day.In order to get the children moving, rest time, PE classes, biking or walking to school should be promoted. Activities like after-school sports that used to be held at school should be restarted. Physical activity should not be seen as a dispensable option but as an important educational concern. 6.What factor is often forgotten when it comes to good grades?A.Child’s High IQ.B.A good environment.C.Physical health. D.The hours spent on learning.7.Which of the following exercises is best for learning and memory?A.Regular aerobic exercise. B.Balance exerciseC.Muscle exercise. D.Resistance training8.How does exercise influence thinking indirectly?A.By releasing growth factors in large numbers.B.By influencing the growth of new blood vessels.C.By affecting the survival of new brain cells.D.By improving a person’s mood and sleep q uality.9.What does the underlined word “dispensable”mean in the last paragraph?A.Unique. B.Universal. C.Unusual. D.Unnecessary. 10.What is the passage mainly about?A.Mental health should never be ignored.B.Physical education class is really a good option.C.Exercise may bring about good academic grades.D.Different exercises have different results on the brain.Since Zhao Hongshan’s dermal filler injection (皮肤填充注射) four years ago—he has spent around 80,000 yuan on his face. “Getting plastic surgeri es is just as normal as body building. But a newcomer will soon be running after them at their heels. 16 It is more than ten years since they did better than America to become the most productive car-makers in the world. China is producing the best cars in the world, and on the way to controlling car production. 17China has gradually built its car-making capabilities during different periods. 18 And then its state-owned companies reached arrangements with western makers like General Motors in the 1980s. This produced cars that were far better designed, and soon China’s roads were becoming busy with western clones.19 It still pays relatively low wages and has millions of skilled workers. Skilled workers are important to reduce the costs because they make vehicles that need fewer rebuilds. Some Chinese vehicles in the past ten years haven’t had the design expected by western buyers, so haven’t sold in enough cars in Europe to worry the western makers.20 Chinese-designed and built vehicles are not far behind in their design, and starting to enter European markets. Xpeng is one Chinese start-up that only produces electric vehicles. Having sold well in China, it is making its first moves into Europe via Norway with its G3 model. The next revolution in car industry is replacing petrol vehicles with electric. With all of China’s advantages, it could finally become the home of the best cars in the world.A.How did this happen?B.Yet this is changing rapidly.C.These cars sold well at home and abroad.D.The Chinese are not exactly newcomers.E.China also has excellent shipping links, like Shanghai.F.China is also in a good position to build cars for the right price.G.It originally began making Soviet-designed vehicles in the 1950s.二、完形填空(本大题共1小题)It was an April evening. 1. A breathtaking trick potentially left over from our ancestors might be found in us ﹣ the ability to sense oxygen through our skin.Amphibians, animals such as frogs that can live both on land and in water, have long been known to be capable of breathing through their skin. In fact, the first known lungless frog that breathes only through its skin was discovered recently in the rivers of Borneo. Now the same oxygen sensors found in frog skins and in the lungs of mammals (哺乳动物) have unexpectedly been discovered in the skin of mice."No one had ever looked, " explained Randall Johnson, a biologist researcher.Mice and frogs are quite distant relatives, so the fact they have these molecules(分子)in common in their skin suggests they might well be found in the skin of other mammals, such as humans."We have no reason to think that they are not in the skin of people too, " Johnson said. These molecules not only detect oxygen, but help increase levels of vital red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body. Normal mice breathing in air that is 10 percent oxygen﹣a dangerously low level similar to conditions at the top of Mount Everest, and about half that of air at sea level. However, mice that had the oxygen sensor HIF﹣1a genetically removed from their skin failed to produce this hormone(荷尔蒙)even after hours of such low oxygen. These findings, if they hold true in humans, suggest one could raise the level of oxygen ________ inside the body. This could help treat lung diseases and disorders such as anemia (贫血症)without injecting drugs, which make up a multibillion﹣dollar market, Johnson said.Athletes also often try to get more oxygen delivered to their muscles in order to improve their performance. They often do this by training at high altitudes or in low﹣oxygen tents. The new study suggests they might want to expose their skin as well as breathing in low﹣oxygen air to improve their performance. "It's hard to say what exactly might bedone, however﹣there's a lot we don't know yet, " Johnson explained. The scientists detailed their findings in the April 18 issue of the journal Cell.(1)Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?________A. Johnson believes that Oxygen sensors also exist in human skin.B. People have to surf the Internet to read detailed findings.C. It has been proved that these findings help treat lung diseases.D. It has long been expected oxygen sensors exist in mice's skin..(2)One of the functions of the molecules mentioned above is________.A. carrying oxygen around the bodyB. improving athletes' performanceC. detecting oxygenD. increasing level of oxygen.(3)What does the underlined word "circulating" in paragraph 8 most probably mean?________A. balancingB. growingC. movingD. gathering.(4)What is Johnson's attitude to the application of the findings to the athletes' training?________A. Negative.B. Doubting.C. Positive.D. Hesitating..2. To learn to think is to learn to question. Those who don't question never truly think for themselves. These are simple rules that have governed the advancement of science and human thought since the beginning of time. Advancements are made when thinkers question theories(理论)and introduce new ones. Unfortunately, it is often the great and respected thinkers who end up slowing the progress of human thought. Aristotle was a brilliant philosopher whose theories explained much of the natural world, often incorrectly. He was so respected by the scientific community that even 1, 200 years after his death, scientists were still trying to build upon his mistakes rather than correct them!Brilliant minds can ________ up﹣and﹣coming thinkers who are not confident of their abilities. They often believe they are not as good as the minds of giants such asAristotle, leading many to accept current ideas instead of questioning them.I, like many thinkers of the past, once believed in my mental weakness. I was certain that my parents, my teachers﹣adults in general﹣were always right. They were like a textbook to me; I didn't question what was written on those pages. I respected them, and accepted whatever they told me. But that attitude soon changed. My mind's independence was first developed in the classroom.A stern, 65﹣year﹣old elementary﹣school science teacher once told me that light is a type of wave. I confidently went through years of school believing that light is a wave. One day, however, I heard the German exchange student mention that light could be made up of particles(粒子). As the others laughed at his statement, I started to question my beliefs.Maybe the teachers and textbooks hadn't given me the whole story. I went to thelibrary, did some research and learned of the light﹣as﹣a﹣wave versus light﹣as﹣a﹣particle debate. I read about Einstein's discovery of the dual nature of light and learned the facts of a paradox(悖论) that puzzles the world's greatest thinkers to this day. Light behaves as both a particle and a wave, it is both at once. I realized I had gone through life accepting only half of the story as the whole truth. Each new year brought more new facts, and I formulated even more questions. I found myself in the library after school, trying to find my own answers to gain a more complete understanding of what I thought I already knew. I discovered that my parents and teachers are good tools in my quest for knowledge, but they are never the final word. Even textbooks can be challenged. I learned to question my sources, I learned to be a thinker. I once believed that everything I learned at home and at school was certain, but I have now discovered to re﹣examine when necessary.Questions are said to be the path to knowledge and truth, and I plan to continue questioning. How many things do we know for sure today that we will question in the future? At this moment, I know that our sun will burn for another five billion years, and I know nothing canescape the gravity of a black hole. This knowledge, however, may change in the next 20 years ﹣maybe even in the next two. The one thing we can control now is our openness to discovery. Questions are the tools of open minds, and open minds are the key to intellectual advancement.(1)In the first paragraph, Aristotle is taken as an example to show that________.A. he is the greatest and respected philosopher of all timeB. huge influence of great thinkers may stop human thought from developingC. advancements are made when thinkers question theoriesD. great thinkers often make mistakes and then correct them.(2)What does the underlined word "intimidate" in Paragraph 2 mean?________A. Frighten.B. Encourage.C. Strengthen.D. Persuade..(3)The author began to question his previous beliefs because________.A. what he learned from textbooks before turned out to be wrongB. he was inspired by the different ideas from an exchange studentC. he was laughed at by other students for his unacceptable statementD. he was not satisfied with his life and desperate to achieve success.(4)According to the passage, the author________.A. looks down upon great thinkers all the timeB. never doubts what he has learned in the textbookC. always throws himself into the laboratoryD. is determined to be a thinker and questioner.(5)We can conclude from the last paragraph that________.A. the author is not quite sure about his futureB. we human beings don't dare to predict futureC. the theory of black holes will change in two yearsD. questioning is necessary to promote advancement.3. I'm one of seven children. My three sisters and I grew up in a small bedroom with two sets of beds. We shared a closet, a dresser, and just about everything else. Our bedroom always had stuff hanging about.①How about the life of only children? I looked longingly at their perfect dolls and toys placed carefully on their perfect shelves in their perfect little girl bedrooms. They had bathrooms to themselves. These little girls would come home to everything just perfect.②Looking back, I had to admit my "only children" friends had nice things. They had designer beds and beautiful bedrooms, but I always had someone to play with and talk to. Even if everyone else hated me, one of my sisters would not and that was all I needed.③Our house was the center of activity for the whole neighborhood. We had dance shows and baseball games in the street.④We had everything we ever needed because we had each other.I have come to realize that there are so many reasons that sisters make a difference to yourlife and I can give you a few here:They get you. Your sisters have grown up with you so they know the entire back story of your situation and everything leading to it. They may not agree with you all the time but they never wonder why you do what you do or say what you say. They have suffered with you through awful times. I know that when one of my sisters is unhappy, I am unhappy too. When some non﹣family member tries to hurt you, the claws of them will come out. They have cheered you on. Sisters do get jealous at times but, even so, they are happy that you are doing well. They ________ at your new bonus as long as you take them out for drinks and foods! They are on the same diet as you. We are women in a world where thinness is equal to beauty. No matter how unjust this is, we are always on a diet. There is nothing like a sister calling and complaining about how she wants an ice cream and can't ever have one again. They are aging at the same rate as you. As we get older, we change, and however miserable this can be, it is heartening to know that someone shares your misery. They know what you are going through because they are going through it too.The last and best thing about sisters is that they stick with us. We can have our upsets and misunderstandings but we always come back to each other.I know many people reading this may have had upsets with their sisters. All I can say is communication fixes everything. If you miss your sister, tell her so. If you have a BFF(Best Friend Forever)that has stuck with you through thick and thin, adopt her as your sister and keep her close to you.(1)How does the author develop the first paragraph?________A. They add to the message by filling in what words sometimes leave behind. But are you somewhat aware of the history that goes behind some of these popular hand gestures?◆HandshakeWhether you’re greeting someone for the first time, or successfully negotiating(商定) an agreement, shaking hands is usually the go-to gesture. Who decided on this customary gesture, anyway? The history of the handshake dates back to ancient Greece, showing that neither person was carrying a weapon.◆Thumbs up and thumbs downMaybe you’re familiar with the popular story of this hand gesture dating back to Roman times. When a gladiator(角斗士) lost, the crowd would either stick their thumb out to have him killed or just not make any sign at all. The thumbs up decided the gladiator’s fate(命运). After WWI, thumbs up only came to mean that things were going smoothly. And thumbs down meant the opposite.◆High fiveAccording to some sources, the high five first became popular when baseball players performed at Dodger Stadium on October 2, 1977. Glenn Burke, one of the capable players, lifted his arm high above his head and slapped palms with his teammate Dusty Baker to celebrate a milestone home run, marking what is widely regarded as the first recorded example of a high five.◆The fist bumpThe fist bump comes from boxers in the 1970s after people began imitating how they touched gloves before a competition. Later, instead of shaking hands, first bumps became popular among basketball players. The gesture soon spread to all basketball lovers, and, before long, to the President of the United States21.What did “thumbs up” mean to a gladiator in Roman times?A. Being cheered.B. Being killed.C. Being appreciated.D. Being blamed.22.Which gesture is in celebration of a home run?23.Which aspect do all the four gestures mention?A. The history.B. The future.C. The power.D. The importance.BAccording to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term “couch potato” first appeared in print in a December, 1979 edition of the Los Angeles Times. Since then, it has become a familiar term for a person who spends a lot of time sitting, and little time exercising. Although there does not seem to be any particular reason why the term “couch potato” is used rather than “couch tomato”, a person may become a “couch potato” because living this way is said to make you round like a potato. The term is also said to have something to do with the high-calorie(卡路里) food like potato chips.People now would say “couch potato” whenever they talk about overweight and obesity(肥胖). Indeed, “couch potatoes” are believed to have heart disease risks, which can be avoided by regular exercise. It is true that technology and modern life in general make us sick, fat, lazy and physically/mentally soft. The more time people spend using technology, particularly televisions and。
