Maternal Education and Child MortalityA. Many studies have been carried out which recognize education (especially that of mothers) as an effective way of improving children's health and reducing child mortality. Caldwell refers to the results of two surveys that were carried out in Nigeria to arrive at the conclusion that "Maternal education is the single most significant determinant of child mortality." However, maternal education is an intertwined factor, and hence may account for other variables that represent socio-economic conditions as well.B. Although the relationship between maternal education and children's health is no longer an issue to be debated, there still exists a dearth of research information on the mechanisms through which maternal education works to improve children's health.A few of the possible mechanisms that have been focused so far are pointed out below:u Education makes a woman conscious about the well being of herself and her family. It gives the basic ideas about the path to well being and also equips and encourages to increase her knowledge on healthy living;u Education helps to form the attitude to practice "manners of hygiene";u Education equips mothers with the knowledge of scientific causes of disease and proper health behaviour and illness behaviour for preventive and curative measures;u Education encourages mothers to adopt proper feeding practices;u Education makes the mothers more willing to use health care services when necessary, and preparing them for overcoming the barriers in doing so. Doctors and nurses are more likely to listen to her, as she can demand their attention, whereas the illiterate might be completely rebuffed;u Education allows greater exposure to the mass media, which can keep mothers better informed about the health issues;u Education empowers mothers to make and implement proper and timely decisions regarding their children's health; Thus, we find maternal education as a gate way toward diversified aspects of modern life that significantly affect children's morbidity and mortality.C. A debate has arisen on the link between maternal education and children's health concerns relative effectiveness of general education (acquired through formal schooling) and health education. While the former enables a mother to become literate and hence gain access to the understanding of written material, the latter only provides her with information on certain health issues. However, educating through general education is time consuming, and to get positive results for the improvement of the health of the illiterate masses, within a short time, health education might be a better choice.D. Although health education as such might be effective for the illiterate, health education cannot be a substitute for general education to ensure survival and health of the children. Rather, more lessons on topics necessary to know in order to maintain a healthy life should be included in the textbooks (such as the germ theory of disease, symptoms of diseases the presence of which should be consulted with a doctor, knowledge in first aid etc.). General education equips a person with literacy -- which gives her access to books and to the mass media, which keeps her up to date regarding new information on health affairs. However, it would certainly be very beneficial to arrange annual or bi-annual health education programs to review the major health issues (and the issue of pregnancy and child care which is difficult for primary school children to grasp).E. At this point another question may be raised: How many years of schooling is required for education to have a substantial amount of effect on children'ssurvival/health? According to a study by Mahalanabis et al., in Bangladesh, schooling of seven years or more of the mothers reduced 55% risk of a child's being attacked by a severe disease resulting from diarrhea, but lesser number of schooling could not provide appreciable protection. Majumder and Islam's study in Bangladesh shows that child survival index moves up from .764 to .811 with the increase of education from no schooling to 5 years of schooling (Primary level in Bangladesh). But the increaseof index for the difference between primary level to secondary level or higher (at least ten years of schooling) is even greater, moving up from .811 to .882. Thus, the difference between child survival index rises from .764 to .882 with the difference of no schooling to ten or more years of schooling. Lindenbaum's has mentioned a case of Khurshida, to show how a woman having seven years of schooling was able to ensure proper treatment for her sick child, after overcoming the different sorts of barriers, which came in her way.F. Maternal education, on its own is not sufficient to ensure survival of children. However, all other efforts in absence of maternal education cannot be fully effective either. Hence, we should look for ways in which maternal education can be the most effective to ensure children's health to determine the appropriate policy to be obtained. From the discussion of the studies above, the following can be suggested: u At least seven years of schooling should be made compulsory for girls.u All basic health issues (which might differ from society to society) should be covered in the textbooks and curricula of lower grades in school and be taught properly, so that even in cases of dropouts, the children will have sufficient health education to lead a healthy way of life, for themselves and their family and community.u As it is difficult for school children aged 12 or below to understand the health issues related to pregnancy, child birth and child care, arrangements for health education (annual/bi-annual) concerned with these and other basic health issues must be made. Mother and child health care programs must function properly to be beneficial for the public. The health care centers must be situated at suitable distance, and convenient opening hours, friendly behaviour of the staff and supply of sufficient facilities and medicines must be ensured.G. Thus, it can be said that in order to ensure children's survival, the governments of third world countries, world organizations, donor countries andNon-Government Organizations, must take initiatives to ensure literacy and sufficient health-knowledge for the mothers and also provide appropriate conditions andenvironment for them to apply that knowledge. This indeed is a great task. But this has to be ensured to ensure the survival of children.Questions 27 – 31Reading Passage 3 has 7 paragraphs A - G. Movies such as ‘Star Wars ', 'the Matrix' and; Harry Potter' rely heavily on computers to create special fantasy and space effects. Others, such as the famous 'Lord of the Rings' movies, created surprisingly lifelike humanoid characters using sophisticated computer-generated techniques. The creative effort that lies behind these creatures is amazing. However, genuinely 'human' characters, indistinguishable from real actors, are still not quite possible, although we are getting very close to this elusive goal. The process of imagining and developing a computer-generated character is complex, involving many stages. The first stage is to design the look of the character, and to create a three-dimensional model on the computer. The model must be able to move in a realistic manner and, most importantly, its face must mirror human faces when it laughs, frowns or talks. One way to achieve this is by building a real skeleton of the model. After using lasers to scan the real model into the computer, controls are added that allow the bones and muscles to be moved around. This is where computer animation comes in. Because people are so conscious of how 'real' faces look, many detailed controls are needed on the computer to move the different features of the face. Up to a hundred may be needed to move the muscles of the face, so that the character's eyes, skin, mouth and other features all look natural to our eyes. After designing all of the components of the face and body, and the computer controls, the character is ready to move, or be animated. One way of achieving this is called motion capture, where a person acts out the character, and his movements are captured by video camera and uploaded into the computer. Another way is key-frame animation, where, instead of modeling actions from a real person, the animators use the controls to move all of the parts of the body and face to create movement on the screen. These methods are often used together in creating an animated character; both of them are slow and painstaking, requiring hours of effort and planning.Enormous computer power is needed to make animation look real. For the 'Lord of the Rings', thousands of processors and numerous workstations were used to create all of the characters and special effects. There were up to 160 people working on computer graphics for these three movies, which took approximately 4 million processing hours. It is estimated that the same process would have taken up to 200 years on a 4-gigahertz PC!However, despite all of this extremely sophisticated and expensive technology, creating a real human face is still a challenge for our animators. People are very sensitive to facial expressions. We can immediately pick if a face is not human, A B C D E Fand we often have a strong reaction to this. The closer the face is to looking truly human, the more negative this reaction can be; this effect has been christened the 'uncanny valley' by Japanese roboticist*Masahiro Mori. However, he also suggests that once the animation gets close enough to the real thing, we begin to feel positive about it once more. 剑桥雅思 READING PASSAGE 2
READING PASSAGE 2You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 15-26 which are based on Reading Passage 2 below. An examination of the functioning of the senses in cetaceans, the group of mammals comprising whales, dolphins and porpoisesSome of the senses that we and other terrestrial mammals take for granted are either reduced or absent in cetaceans or fail to function well in water. For example, it appears from their brain structure that toothed species are unable to smell. Baleen species, on the other hand, appear to have some related brain structures but it is not known whether these are functional. It has been speculated that, as the blowholes evolved and migrated to the top of the head, the neuralpathways serving sense of smell may have been nearly all sacrificed. Similarly, although at least some cetaceans have taste buds, the nerves serving these have degenerated or are rudimentary. The sense of touch has sometimes been described as weak too, but this view is probably mistaken. Trainers of captive dolphins and small whales often remark on their animals’ responsiveness to being touched or rubbed, and both captive and freeranging cetacean individuals of all species (particularly adults and calves, or members of the same subgroup) appear to make frequent contact. This contact may help to maintain order within a group, and stroking or touching are part of the courtship ritual in most species. The area around the blowhole is also particularly sensitive and captive animals often object strongly to being touched there. The sense of vision is developed to different degrees in different species. Baleen species studied at close quarters underwater –specifically a grey whale calf in captivity for a year, and free-ranging right whales and humpback whales studied and filmed off Argentina and Hawaii – have obviously tracked objects with vision underwater, and they can apparently see moderately well both in water and in air. However, the position of the eyes so restricts the field of vision inbaleen whales that they probably do not have stereoscopic vision. On the other hand, the position of the eyes in most dolphins and porpoises suggests that they have stereoscopic vision forward and downward. Eye position in freshwater dolphins, which often swim on their side or upside down while feeding, suggests that what vision they have is stereoscopic forward and upward. By comparison, the bottlenose dolphin has extremely keen vision in water. Judging from the way it watches and tracks airborne flying fish, it can apparently see fairly well through the air–water interface as well. And although preliminary experimental evidence suggests that their in-air vision is poor, the accuracy with which dolphins leap high to take small fish out of a trainer’s hand p rovides anecdotal evidence to the contrary.Such variation can no doubt be explained with reference to the habitats in which individual species have developed. For example, vision is obviously more useful to species inhabiting clear open waters than to those living in turbid rivers and flooded plains. The South American boutu and Chinese beiji, for instance, appear to have very limited vision, and the Indian susus are blind, their eyes reduced to slits that probably allow them to sense only the direction and intensity of light.Although the senses of taste and smell appear to have deteriorated, and vision in water appears to be uncertain, such weaknesses are more than compensated for by cetaceans’ well-developed acoustic sense. Most species are highly vocal, although they vary in the range of sounds they produce, and many forage for food using echolocation. Large baleen whales primarily use the lower frequencies and are often limited in their repertoire. Notable exceptions are the nearly song-like choruses of bowhead whales in summer and the complex, haunting utterances of the humpback whales. Toothed species in general employ more of the frequency spectrum, and produce a wider variety of sounds, than baleen species (though the sperm whale apparently produces a monotonous series of high-energy clicks and little else). Some of the more complicated sounds are clearly communicative, although what role they may play in the social life and ‘culture’ of cetaceans has been more the subject of wild speculation than of solid science.Question 15-21Complete the table below.Choose NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS from Reading Passage 2 for each answer.Write your answers in boxes 15-21 on your answer sheet.Question 22-26Answer the questions below using NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS from the passage for each answer.Write your answers in boxes 22-26 on your answer sheet.22Which of the senses is described here as being involved in mating?23 Which species swims upside down while eating?24 What can bottlenose dolphins follow from under the water?25 Which type of habitat is related to good visual ability?26 Which of the senses is best developed in cetaceans?。
雅思阅读Unit2
Unit 2 FoodHoodiaA The San live in that part of Africa called the Kalahari [ka:la:´ha:ri] Desert.(喀拉哈里沙漠,非洲南部) Life there is hard, and nature can be harsh [ha:ʃ] (严厉的). There are somewhere between 45,000 and 100,000 of them living in countries like Zambia [´zæmbiə](赞比亚,非洲中南部)and Zimbabwe [zim´ba:bwei](津巴布韦,非洲). They’re not rich and they don’t live in expensive houses. There are no roads or schools or hospitals near them. They don’t have many material possessions [pə´zeʃənz](财产)like cars or computers, things that people in the developed world can’t do without. In fact, they have many problems such as unemployment and poverty(贫困). On the top of this, they also suffer from alcoholism [´ælkəhɔlizəm](酗酒), drinking to forget their problems. They ‘re the San, a tribe of traditional hunter-gatherers, who used to travel in search of food for their families instead of growing it or keeping animals. They have a culture that is 20,000 years old, but their old way of life is disappearing fast and has nearly gone fore ver. So yes, they’re poor, and yes, their lifestyle is not attractive to outsiders, but they do have one thing that certain people in the developed world are very very interested in and want to have, and that may make them some money. It’s called hoodia(仙人掌).B Many countries have basic, common crops that people plant for food, such as rice or potatoes.Potatoes are grown in many European countries as well as South America (They originated there!),and rice is a staple [´stepl] food(主食)in Asia. But not all plants are grown just for food; some ofthem can also be used as medicine. A few examples are garlic(大蒜), which is said to help withcolds or high blood pressure, ginger(姜)to help with headaches or toothache, or the magnolia[mæg´nauliə](木兰)tree which is used in Chinese traditional medicine to treat some forms ofcancer and heart disease. Hoodia ,a cactus [´kæktəs](仙人掌)-like plant, only grows in the areawhere the San live, and they know where to find it and the best time to use it. They have knownabout i t for centuries and they understand how to use it, but they don’t use it for food, and theydon’t use it to cure disease either. They use it to fight hunger.C In the old days when the San had to travel in search of food, they and their childrensometimes had to go without food for several days. This was even longer in times of famine[´fæmin](饥荒)or when the rains failed. They ate the hoodia plant when they were starving, tohelp them survive until they found food, to stop their children from crying, and to give them thestrength to continue their search. However, it didn’t give them energy like normal food would.Instead, the chemicals in the hoodia plant killed the feeling of hunger and stopped them wantingfood. They didn’t know exactly how it worked; the only thing they knew for certain was it didwork.D Scientists have now discovered that the plant contains a substance [´sʌbstəns](物质)whichthey have called P57. This chemical makes the brain believe that the stomach is full and that thebody doesn’t need food. That is why people in the developed world, especially those in pharmaceutical [,fa:məsu:tikl](制药的)companies, are extremely interested in this very promising (有前途的)plant.E Obesity [əu´bi:siti](肥胖)in the developed world is a huge and growing problem, not only among adults, but increasingly among children. It has been estimated(估计)that up to 50%of people in the developed world are overweight and 20% of these are obese; at the time of writing, for example,30% of Chinese children were considered to be too heavy for their age. One cause of obesity is eating the wrong kind of food. Our grandparents had the time to prepare simple yet nourishing [´nʌriʃiŋ](有营养的)meals, and they didn’t eat as much meat or fatty foods as we do nowadays, and that’s one reason why they were slimmer and healthier than their descendants [di´sendənt](后代). Today we have less time to cook, and we have more money, so the easiest thing to do is to buy ready-made meals. They may be convenient and taste good, but they’re often high in fat, salt and sugar. Too much of these make people unhealthy and fat. They need to lose weight, and that’s where hoodia comes in.F I seems to be the perfect solution. People in the West want to lose weight and hoodia is ideal. Western companies pay for the right to use the secrets of the hoodia plant; by selling these rights to the West, the San make money and can then help themselves. Obese people lose weight and the San people make a profit(利益), so everyone is happy.4. 段意概括,将段落开头A-F 分别填入相对应的横线_____Hoodia may help people to lose weight_____Some children have a weight problem in the developed world ._____Most places have a staple food ._____The San can be found in Kalahari desert in Africa._____Hoodia contains p57F E B A C D5. 用下列句式开头,对本文章进行简短的总结,叙述出来。

The process of imagining and developing a computer-generatedcharacter is complex, involving many stages. Another way is key-frame animation, where, instead of modeling actions from a real person, the animators use the controls to move all of the parts of the body and face to create movement on thescreen. These methods are often used together in creating an animated character; both of them are slow and painstaking, requiring hours of effort and planning. Enormous computer power is needed to make animation look real. For the 'Lord of the Rings', thousands of processors and numerous workstations were used to create all of the characters and special effects. There were up to 160 people working on computer graphics for these three movies, which took approximately 4 million processing hours. It is estimated that the same processwould have taken up to 200 years on a 4-gigahertz PC! However, despite all of this extremely sophisticated and expensive technology, creating a real human face is still a challenge for our animators. People are very A B CDEFsensitive to facial expressions. We can immediately pick if a face is not human, and we often have a strong reaction to this. The closer the face is to looking truly huma n, the more n egative this react ion can be; this effect has bee n christe ned the'uncanny valley' by Japaneseroboticist*Masahiro Mori. However, genuinely 'human' characters, indistinguishable from real actors, are still not quite possible, although we are getting very close to this elusive goal. The process of imagining and developing a computer-generated c haracter is complex, involving many stages. After designing all of the components of the face and body, and the computercontrols, the character is ready to move, or be animated. It is estimated that the same process w ould have taken up to 200 years on a 4-gigahertz PC! However, despite all of this extremely sophisticated and expensive technology, creating a real human face is still a challenge for our animators. People are very sensitive to facial expressions. We can immediately pick if a face is not human,ABCD EFand we often have a strong reaction to this. The closer the face is to looking truly human, the more negative this reaction can be; this effect has been christened the 'uncanny valley' by Japanese r oboticist*Masahiro Mori. However, he also suggests that once the animation gets close enough to the real thing, we begin to feel positive about it once more. So, maybe future Tom Cruises or Lindsay Loans will be computer generated, and we will never know the difference.* an expert on design, construction and use of robots4 Read the first sentence ONLY of each paragraph in the reading passage and answer the question below.
