Emerson regards nature as the purest, and the most sanctifying moral influence on man, and advocated a direct intuition of a spiritual and immanent God in nature. The soul has completely transcended the limits of individuality and become part of the Over soul. Emerson sees spirit pervading everywhere, not only in the soul of man, but behind nature, throughout nature.4.【正确答案】 A. make through exam of things.B. cure, prescriptionC. of studies Francis Bacon5.【正确答案】 A. It is a collaboration of Wordsworth and Coleridge, the major representatives of the Romantic Movement.B. In the book, they explored new theories and innovated new techniques in poetry writing. They saw poetry as a healing energy; they believed that poetry could purify both individual souls and the society. The preface to the second edition of the Lyrical Ballads acts as a manifesto for the new school. Wordsworth’s poems in the Lyrical Ballads differs in marked ways from his early poetry, notably the uncompromising simplicity of much of the language, the strong sympathy not merely with the poor in general but with particular, dramatized examples of them, and the fusion of natural description with expressions of inward states of mind.6.【正确答案】 A. NoB. The two collections of poems written by William Blake, “Sons of Innocence” and “Sons of Experience”, hold the similar subject-matter, but the tone, emphasis and conclusion differ.7.【正确答案】Walt Whitman was an important poet in American literary history. His originality lies first of all in his use of the poetic form free verse, by means of which he becomes conversational and casual. He usually uses the first person pronoun “I” to stress individualism, and oral language to acquire symp athy from the common reader. His topics are sometimes sexual but his themes are far more than sexual.8.【正确答案】Hawthorne’s stories are generally read as allegories symbolic of human experience, so is “Young Goodman Brown”. Allegorically Brown’s night journey to the forest could be taken as a journey of the mind into the dark region of evil. It is especially true if we allow for some very important details about the light and the shadow, the dreamlike atmosphere, the words and phrases he uses to describe what Brown has experienced in the forest, none of which seems to be substantially solid or physically present.9.【正确答案】This monologue, a psychological exploration of life and death, reveals the character of Hamlet as a man of contemplation rather than action. With the intolerable burden of the duty to revenge his father’s death and the challenge of evil forc es, Hamlet seems to withdraw into a mental world which is thrown into a conflict or a choice between life and death. The philosophical speculation mixed up with a deep pessimistic outlook resists against action at first, but later awakens the hero out of his melancholy to a sense of the “enterprise of treat pith and moment”, indicating that he is to do something for what he concerns himself with.10.【正确答案】Although James and Twain both worked for realism, there were obvious differences between them. In thematic terms, James wrote mostly of the upper reaches of American society, whereas Mark Twain dealt largely with the lower strata of society. Technically, James pursued psychological realism, but Mark Twain’s contribution to the development of realism and to American literature as a whole was partly through his theories of Local Colorist in American fiction, and partly through his colloquial style.Henry James believed that reality lies in the impressions made by life on the spectator, and not in any facts of which the spectator is unaware, such realism is therefore merely the obligation that the artist assumes to represent life as he sees it, which may not be the same life as it “really” is. James shifted the ground of realistic art from the outer to the inner world.Mark Twain preferred to represent social life through portraits of local places which he knew best. He drew heavily from his own rich fund of knowledge of people and places. He confined himself to the life with which he was familiar. By quoting from his own experience, Mark Twain managed to transform into art the freedom and humor, in short, the finest elements of western culture.。

Neo-classicists upheld that artistic ideals should be order, logic, restrained emotion and accuracy, and that literature should be judged in terms of its service to humanity, and thus, literary expressions should be of proportion, unity , harmony and grace. Pope' s An Essay on Criticism advocates grace, wit (usually through satire/humour) , and simplicity in language (and the poem itself is a demonstration of those ideals, too) ; Fielding' s Tom Jones helped establish the form of novel; Gray' s " Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" displays elegance in style, unified structure, serious tone and moral instruction. B. Romanticists tended to see the individual as the very center of all experience, including art, and thus, literary work should be "spontaneous overflow of strong feelings" , and no matter how fragmentary those experiences were ( Wordsworth' s "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" , or "The Solitary Reaper" , or Coleridge' s "Kubla Khan" ) , the value of the work lied in the accuracy of presenting those unique feelings and particular attitudes. C. In a word, Neo-classicism emphasized rationality and form but Romanticism attached great importance to die individual' s mind ( emotion, imagination, temporary experience...).)解析:8.Please mark a brief comment on Hawthorne' s Young Goodman Brown.(分数:2.00)__________________________________________________________________________________________ 正确答案:(正确答案:A. Goodman Brown, a Puritan who lives in the village of Salem, leaves his wife Faith, who pleads him not to go, to attend a witches' Sabbath in the woods. There, heastonishingly finds lots of prominent people of the village and the church. When he is about to be confirmed into the group, he finds his wife Faith is also there beside him. He immediately cries out "look up to Heaven and resist the wicked one" , only to find he is alone in the forest. He returns to his home, but since then lives a dismal and gloomy life because he is never able to believe in goodness or piety again. B. Young Goodman Brown is one of Hawthorne' s most profound tales. In the manner of its concern with guilt and evil, it exemplifies what Melville called the " power of blackness" in Hawthorne' s work. Its hero, a naive young man who accepts both society in general and his fellow men as individuals worth his regard, is confronted with the vision of human evil in one terrible night, and becomes thereafter distrustful and doubtful. Allegorically, our protagonist becomes an Everyman named Brown, a "young" man, who will be aged in one night by an adventure that makes everyone in this world a fallen idol. However, the story is manipulated in such a way that we as readers feel that Hawthorne poses the question of Good and Evil in man but withholds his answer, and he does not permit himself to determine whether the events of the night of trial are real or the mere figment of a dream.)解析:9.Symbolism is an important literary practice in literature and it has been widely used by many American writers. ( 60% )Passage 1Every human being, no matter what he is doing, gives off body heat. The usual problem is how to get rid of it. But the designers of the Johnstown campus of the University of Pittsburgh set themselves the opposite problem – how to collect body heat. They have designed a collection system which uses not only body heat, but the heat given off by such objects as light bulbs 电灯and refrigerators冰箱as well. The system works so well that no fuel is needed to make the campus's six buildings comfortable. Some parts of most modern buildings –theaters and offices as well as classrooms –are more than sufficiently heated by people and lights and sometimes must be air-conditioned even in winter . The technique of saving heat and redistributing it is called “heat recovery”. A few modern buildings recover heat, but the University's system is the first to recover heat from buildings and reuse it in others.Along the way, Pitt has learned a great deal about some of its producers. The harder a student studies, the more heat his body gives off. Male students send out more heat than female students, and the larger a student is, the more heat he produces . It is tempting to conclude that the hottest prospect for the Johnstown campus would be a hard-working overweight male genius.1. What is characteristic of the buildings on Johnstown campus of the University of Pittsburgh? BA. They are more comfortable to live in than other buildings.B. They collect body heat to regulate the temperature inside.C. They use light bulbs to heat the classrooms.D. They consume less fuel to keep the classrooms cool.2. A girl student sends out more heat than a boy student.D. A large and hard-working boy student gives off the most heat.5. Which of the following may be the best title for this passage?AA. Recovery of Body Heat C. Modern Building's Heat SystemB. Body Heat and Sex D. Ways of Heating BuildingsPassage 2The Earth has a force that pulls thing toward itself. We call this force gravity. This is something we live with all the time, and we take it for granted and hardly ever think about it . But it is a most important factor in rocket operation and must overcome if we are to get anywhere in space, or off the ground at all.Take the throwing of a ball as an example. The harder the ball is thrown, the faster and higher it will go. What is the secret? Its speed. If we could throw the ball hard enough it would go up and up forever and never come down. The speed at which it would have to be thrown do this is known as escape speed. Of course, we cannot throw a ball hard enough because the speed required to escape completely from the Earth's gravity is seven miles per second, or over twenty-five thousand miles per hour.Once escape speed has been reached by a spacecraft, no further power is needed. A rocket aimed at the Moon, for instance, will ‘coast' (滑行)the rest of the way because the Earth's gravity cannot then pull it back, and there is no air resistance in space to slow it down. This ‘coasting' is known as ‘free fall'.自由落体That does not mean the rocket is falling down towards the Earth but that it is traveling freely in space without the aid of power, like a bicycle coasting downhill.Free fall is an important feature of space travel: it would be impossible to carry enough fuel to provide powered flight all the time.6. What is the most important factor for a rocket to escape from the Earth?BA. To travel as fast as it can.B. To overcome the Earth's gravity.C. To reduce the air resistance.D. To carry enough fuel with it.7. How fast will a rocket go to escape completely from the Earth's gravity? DA. Seventy miles per second.B. Seven thousand miles per hour.C. Twenty-five thousand miles per second.D. Twenty-five thousand miles per hour.8. As there is always the Earth's gravitational pull, people A________.A. accept it without questioning itB. never notice its presenceC. seldom think about how to use itD. often try to escape from it9. When a bicycle ‘coasts' downhill, it __B______.A. runs faster and fasterB. runs freely without any further powerC. is no longer affected by the Earth's gravityD. does not meet with air resistance10. Why is it not necessary to provide powered flight in space all the time? CA. Few spacecraft complete their flight operations.B. The spacecraft will be attracted by the Moon.C. No further power is needed after the escape speed is reached.D. ‘Free fall' takes the place of the Earth's gravitational pull.Passage 3Crime is a very serious problem in Britain. One sort of crime which particularly worries people is juvenile delinquency –that is, crimes committed by young people. For some years juvenile delinquency 青少年犯罪had been increasing. There are two main sorts of juvenile crimes: stealing and violence. Most people do not understand why young people commit these crimes. There are, I think, a large number of different reasons. These crimes are not usually committed by people who are poor or in need. Young people often dislike and hate the adult world. They will do things to show that they are rebels.反抗Also in Britain today it is easier for young people to commit crimes because they have more freedom to go where they like and more money to do what they like .There are two other possible causes which are worth mentioning. More and more people in Britain live in large towns. In a large town no one knows who anyone else is or where they live. But in the village I come from crimes are rare because everyone knows everyone else.Although it is difficult to explain, I think the last cause is very important. Perhaps there is something with our society which encourages violence and crime. It is a fact that all the time children are exposed to films and reports about crime and violence. Many people do not agree that this influences the young people, but I think that young people are very much influenced by the society they grow in. I feel that the fault may be as much with our whole society as with these young people.11. From the passage we know that many British people are confused about _D_______.A. the causes of juvenile crimesB. the rise of the crime rateC. the problem of crimes in their countryD. the various kinds of juvenile delinquency12. One reason why young people in large cities are more likely to commit crimes is that B________.A. they need more moneyB. they are free to moveC. they live a better lifeD. nobody knows anything about others13. According to the passage, which groups of the following young people are LEAST likely to commit crimes? BA. Those living in big cities.B. Those living in the countryside.C. Those who are very poor.D. Those who are in need of help.14. Unlike many others, the author holds that one important cause for juvenile delinquency is that _____A___.A. young people nowadays do not like adult worldB. young people in Britain today are freer than beforeC. young people are influenced by crime and violence in films and newspapersD. too many young people have come to live in big cities15. According to the passage, which is to blame for juvenile crimes, apart from the young peoplethemselves? CA. The adult world.B. Their parents.C. The society.D. The development of the cities.III.Cloze ( 20% )A contract is an agreement between two or more people (1) ________ one person agrees to do something by a specified date in return for something done by (2) ________. Reading Comprehension ( 20×2′=40′)Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage one: Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage.Violence Can Do Nothing to Diminish Race PrejudiceIn some countries where racial prejudice is acute, violence has so come to be taken for granted as a means of solving differences, that it is not even questioned. There are countries where the white man imposes his rule by brute force; there are countries where the black man protests by setting fire to cities and by looting and pillaging. Important people on both sides, who would in other respects appear to be reasonable men, get up and calmly argue in favor of violence – as if it were a legitimate solution, like any other. What is reallyfrightening, what really fills you with despair, is the realization that when it comes to the crunch, we have made no actual progress at all. We may wear collars and ties instead of war-paint, but our instincts remain basically unchanged. The whole of the recorded history of the human race, that tedious documentation of violence, has taught us absolutely nothing. We have still not learnt that violence never solves a problem but makes it more acute. The sheer horror, the bloodshed, the suffering mean nothing. No solution ever comes to light the morning after when we dismally contemplate the smoking ruins and wonder what hit us. Before we can even begin to contemplate peaceful co-existence between the races, we must appreciate each other’s problems. And to do this, we must learn about them: it is a simple exercise in communication, in exchanging information. ‘Talk, talk, talk,’ the advoc ates of violence say, ‘all you ever do is talk, and we are none the wiser.’ It’s rather like the story of the famous barrister who painstakingly explained his case to the judge. After listening to a lengthy argument the judge complained that after all this talk, he was none the wiser.‘Possible, my lord,’ the barrister replied, ‘none the wiser, but surely far better informed.’ Knowledge is the necessary prerequisite to wisdom: the knowledge that violence creates the evils it pretends to solve.1. What is the best title for this passage?A) Advocating Violence.B) Violence Can Do Nothing to Diminish Race Prejudice.C) Important People on Both Sides See Violence As a Legitimate Solution.D) The Instincts of Human Race Are Thirsty for Violence.2. But most of the country's forests have been cut down, and logging is now banned to save the few that are left. The number of domesticated elephants left in the country is now only 2,500 or so, down from about 100,000 a century ago. Though being the national animal of Thailand earns an elephant plenty of respect, this does not put grass on the table. Thai elephants thesedays take tourists on treks or perform in circuses, and are sometimes to be seen begging for bananas on the streets of Bangkok. Some of the 46 elephants living at the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre, a former government logging camp near Lampang, have found a new life in music. The Thai Elephant Orchestra is the creation of two Americans, Richard Lair, who has worked with Asian elephants for 23 years, and David Soldier, a musician and neuroscientist with a taste for the avant-garde. They provided s ix of the center’s elephants, aged seven to 18, with a variety of percussion and wind instruments. Those familiar with Thai instruments will recognize the slit drums, the gong, the bow bass, the xylophone-like rants, as well as the thunder sheet. The only difference is that the elephant versions are a bit sturdier. Some of the elephants in the band have also tried their hand at painting, tending to favor the abstract over the representational style. Their broad-stroke acrylic paintings last year helped raise some $25,000 at a charity auction at Christie's in New York, and a London gallery has also taken some of their work. These art sales, together with profits from the CD, are helping to keep the centre going. A second CD is on the way. It will be less classical, more pop.1. A central bank serves as the banker to both the banking community and the government; it also issues the national currency, conducts monetary policy, and plays a major role in supervision and regulation of banks and bank holding companies. In the . these functions are the responsibilities of key officials of the Federal Reserve System: the Board of Governors, located in Washington, ., and the top officers of the 12 district Federal Reserve banks, located throu ghout the nation. The Fed’s actions, described below, generally have a significant effect on the . interest rates and, subsequently, on stock, bond, and other financial markets. The Federal Reserve’s basic powers are concentrated in the Board of Governors, which is paramount in all policy issues concerning bank regulation and supervision and in mostaspects of monetary control. The board enunciates the Fed’s policies on both monetary and banking matters. Because the board is not an operating agency, most of the day-to-day implementation of policies decisions is left to the district Federal Reserve banks, stock in which is owned by the commercial banks that are members of the Federal Reserve System. Ownership in this instance, however, does not imply control the Board of Governors and the heads of the Reserve banks orient their policies to the public interest rather than to the benefit of the private banking system. The . banking system’s regulatory apparatus is complex; the authority of the Federal Reserve is shared in some instances for example, in mergers or the examination of banks with other federal agencies such as the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Deposit Insurance Cooperation (FDIC). In the critical area of regulating the nation’s money supply in accordance with national economic goals, however, the Federal Reserve is independent within the government. Income and expenditures of the Federal Reserve banks and of the Board of Governors are not subject to the congressional appropriation process; the Federal Reserve is subject to the congressional appropriation process; the Federal Reserve is self-financing. Its income ($ billion in 1992) comes mainly from Reserve bank holdings of income-earning securities, primarily those of the . government. Outlays ($ billion in 1992) are mostly for operational expenses in providing services to the government and for expenditures connected with regulation and monetary policy. In 1992 the Federal Reserve returned $ billion in earnings to the . Income of the Board of Governors____.A) is borrowed from the . TreasuryB) is used by the government to make various policiesC) comes from the . TreasuryD) is not granted by the governmentPassage four: Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage.Joy and sadness are experienced by people in all cultures around the world, but how can we tell when other people are happy or despondent It turns out that the expression of many emotions may be universal. Smiling is apparently a universal sign of friendliness and approval. Baring the teeth in a hostile way, as noted by Charles Darwin in the nineteenth century, may be a universe sign of anger. As the originator of the theory of evolution, Darwin believed that the universal recognition of facial expressions would have survival value. For example, facial expressions could signal the approach of enemies (or friends) in the absence of language. Most investigators concur that certain facial expressions suggest the same emotions in a people. Moreover, people in diverse cultures recognize the emotions manifested by the facial expressions. In classic research Paul Ekman took photographs of people exhibiting the emotions of anger, disgust, fear, happiness, and sadness. He then asked people around the world to indicate what emotions were being depicted in them. Those queried ranged from European college students to members of the Fore, a tribe that dwells in the New Guinea highlands. All groups including the Fore, who had almost no contact with Western culture, agreed on the portrayed emotions. The Fore also displayed familiar facial expressions when asked how they would respond if they were the characters in stories that called for basic emotional responses. Ekman and his colleagues more recently obtained similar results in a study of ten cultures in which participants were permitted to report that multiple emotions were shown by facial expressions. The participants generally agreed on which two emotions were being shown and which emotion was more intense. Psychological researchers generally recognize that facial expressions reflect emotional states. In fact, various emotional states give rise to certain patterns of electrical activity in the facial muscles and in the brain. The facial-feedback hypothesis argues, however, that the causal relationship between emotions and facial expressions can also work in the opposite direction. According to this hypothesis, signals from the facial muscles ("feedback") are sent back to emotion centers of the brain, and so a person's facial expression can influence that person's emotional state. Consider Darwin's words: "The free expression by outward signs of an emotion intensifies it. On the other hand, the repression, as far as possible, of all outward signs softens our emotions." Can smiling give rise to feelings of good will, for example, and frowning to angerPsychological research has given rise to some interesting findings concerning the facial-feedback hypothesis. Causing participants in experiments to smile, for example, leads them to report more positive feelings and to rate cartoons (humorous drawings of people or situations) as being more humorous. When they are caused to frown, they rate cartoons as being more aggressive. What are the possible links between facial expressions and emotion One link is arousal, which is the level of activity or preparedness for activity in an organism. Intense contraction of facial muscles, such as those used in signifying fear, heightens arousal. Self-perception of heightened arousal then leads to heightened emotional activity. Other links may involvechanges in brain temperature and the release of neurotransmitters (substances that transmit nerve impulses.) The contraction of facial muscles both influences the internal emotional state and reflects it. Ekman has found that the so-called Duchenne smile, which is characterized by "crow's feet" wrinkles around the eyes and a subtle drop in the eye cover fold so that the skin above the eye moves down slightly toward the eyeball, can lead to pleasant feelings.Ekman's observation may be relevant to the British expression "keep a stiff upper lip" as a recommendation for handling stress. It might be that a "stiff" lip suppresses emotional response-as long as the lip is not quivering with fear or tension. But when the emotion that leads to stiffening the lip is more intense, and involves strong muscle tension, facial feedback may heighten emotional response.1. There are countries where the white man imposes his rule by brute force; there are countries where the black man protests by setting fire to cities and by lootingand pillaging. Important people on both sides, who would in other respects appear to be reas on able men, get up and calmly argue in favor of viole nee - as if it were a legitimate solution, like any other. No solution ever comes to light the morning after when we dismally contemplate the smoking ruins and wonder what hit us.Before we can even begin to contemplate peaceful co-existence between the races, we must appreciate each other 's problems. And to do this, we must learn about them: it is a simple exercise in communication, in exchanging information. ‘Talk, talk, talk, ' the advocates of violence say,‘all you ever do is talk, and we are nonethe wiser. ' It 's rather like the story of the famous barrister who painsta kingly explained his case to the judge. After listening to a lengthy argument the judge complained that after all this talk, he was none the wiser. ‘Possible, my lord, ' the barrister replied, ‘none the wiser, but surely far better informed. ' Knowledge is the necessary prerequisite to wisdom: the knowledge that violence creates the evils it pretends to solve.1. Thai elephants these days take tourists on treks or perform in circuses, and are sometimes to be seen begging for bananas on the streets of Bangkok. Some of the 46 elephants living at the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre, a former governmentlogging camp near Lampang, have found a new life in music. The Thai Elephant Orchestra is the creation of two Americans, Richard Lair, who has worked with Asian elephants for 23 years, and David Soldier, a musician and neuroscientist with a taste for the avant- garde. They provided six of the center ' s elephants, aged seven to 18, with a variety of percussion and wind instruments. Those familiar with Thai instruments will recognize the slit drums, the gong, the bow bass, the xylophone-like rants, as well as the thunder sheet. The only difference is that the elephant versions are a bit sturdier. The elephants are given a cue to start and then they improvise. They clearly have a strong sense of rhythm. They flap their ears to the beat, swish their tails and generally rock back and forth. Someadd to the melody with their own trumpeting. Elephant mood-music could have a commercial future, Mr. Soldier believes. He has even produced a CDon the Mulatta label-it is available at13elephant tracks. It is real elephant music, he says, with only the human noises removed by sound engineers. But is it music Bob Halliday, music critic of the Bangkok Post, says it is. He commendsthe elephants for being "so communicative". Anyone not knowing that it was elephant music, he says, would assume that humans were playing. Some of the elephants in the band have also tried their hand at painting, tending to favor the abstract over the representational style. Their broad-stroke acrylic paintings last year helped raise some $25,000 at a charity auction at Christie's in NewYork, and a London gallery has also taken some of their work. These art sales, together with profits from the CD, are helping to keep the centre going. A second CD is on the way. It will be less classical, more pop.1. The Fed ' s actions, described below, gen erally have a sig ni fica nt effect on the .in terest rates and, subseque ntly, on stock, bond, and other finan cial markets. The Federal Reserve ' s basic powers are concentrated in the Board of Governors, which is paramount in all policy issues concerning bank regulation and supervision and in most aspects of monetary control. The board enunciates the Fed' s policies on both monetary and banking matters. Because the board is not an operating agency, most of the day-to-day implementation of policies decisions is left to the districtFederal Reserve ban ks, stock in which is owned by the commercial banks that are members of the Federal Reserve System. All groups including the Fore, who had almost no contact with Western culture, agreed on theportrayed emotions. The Fore also displayed familiar facial expressions when asked how they would respond if they were the characters in stories that called for basic emotional responses. Ekman and his colleagues more recently obtained similar results in a study of ten cultures in which participants were permitted to reportthat multiple emotions were shown by facial expressions. Other links mayinvolve changes in brain temperature and the release of neurotransmitters (substances that transmit nerve impulses.) The contraction of facial muscles both influences the internal emotional state and reflects it.
