Persuasive argument outline
• Your oral essay should include three things;
1. An introduction
The introduction needs to grab the reader or the listeners attention!
In this talk I will create an argument that supports the statement that Prisons should be a place of rehabilitation not punishment.
2. The main body
In the main body each paragraph should focus on one piece of evidence. i.e A:Topic sentence Firstly, Students are adults and as such they can make their own decisions about their life. B. Evidence Second Supporting Point, Evidence & Transition C. Opposition/Rebuttal Third Supporting Point, Evidence & Transition D. Smooth Transition
Persuasive argument topics
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Should Governments censor what we see on TV and the media? Should Learning English in Chinese classrooms focus more on the student? Should we pay money to people we knock down in the street? Should it be compulsorily to learn about sex education in school? Prisons, a place of punishment or rehabilitation? Should we always respect authority? Does unrealistic body images in advertising lead to problems in women and men?
According to UN data, between 2010-2015 Chinese population growth will continue at 0.5%. The Taiping rebellion lead by Hong Xiu Quan (洪秀全) was responsible for the deaths of over 12 million people.
The introduction should clearly show the reader or the listener which side you are supporting.
• Some persuasive introduction strategies • Scenario/anecdote • The writer or speaker provides a hypothetical or personal example to illustrate the topic • Example
Scientific fact Geographical fact
ics
England is located in Northern Europe.
5000 women were asked the question, what is the most important quality you want from your husband? 75% (3750) said ‘they have to be trustworthy’. Every time I go out to eat I see more and more people wearing expensive clothes.
I am very lucky to have been born where I was. The United Kingdom is not perfect, it has many problems but at the heart of British culture is the belief that we are all free to have an opinion. We all have the right to know the truth, no matter how bad it is. I am proud to say that my country has some of the best media in the world, it is free to say what it wants, when it wants, about anybody it wants. I can not imagine this freedom being taken away from my country. • In this is talk I will provide a persuasive argument that states governments should not censor TV and media.
• Open with a quote • The famous animator Walt Disney once said;
A man should never neglect his family for business. This statement is something I think most people forget, in life it is easy when we are busy with work to forget about the most important people in our lives, our family.
In this presentation I will argue that;
It is not ok to take jobs far away from our families
• Definition or explanation of the topic
• Example Prisons are places that we go to when we break the law. It is not a place we go to when we commit a minor offence it is a place we go to when we do something really bad. Of different countries send people to prison for different reasons but for whatever reason people are sent there for, there is a controversy that surrounds the question of what should prisons do when they get to jail?
The heart pumps blood around the body.
Personal opinion
Survey Historical fact
You need to cite your sources
• If you cite from speech you should say;
• George Washington once said ‘It is far better to be alone, than to be in bad company’
Persuasive essay
A persuasive argument tries to persuade the listener or reader with evidence and emotion A persuasive essay usually has 5-6 paragraphs Each paragraph is supported with evidence
• Rhetorical questions • Have you ever wondered why so many Chinese students learn English for so many years but their spoken English often remains at a low level? • Imagine a world with no free speech, no protection from corrupt officials, nothing you can do if somebody wants to take your home away? • Well In some countries this is the reality • With this in mind I will now present to you an argument that states, it is not ok to always obey authority
Conclusion
• Reiterate your thesis statement (write it similarly, not identically).
• B. Summarize your first, second and third supporting points.
