Unit 5. Part one. The inhabitants of a small island.2. Exercises. 1. Listen to the passage about the life on a small island and then answer the following questions. The inhabitants of a small island in the South Pacific discovered a plant which contained a powerful drug. This drug made it more difficult for them to think rationally. It stops them worrying about the future, and enables them to forget all their problems. At the same time it made it much easier for them to relax and enjoy themselves. So much so indeed that the whole population of the islands stopped working and spent all their time singing dancing and looking at the sea. Unfortunately this had a very bad effect on the country’s economy, and people began to run short of food. This however didn’t discourage the people from taking the drug. The prime minister made speeches on the TV, warning them about the drug. But nobody took any notice. And before long the economy was in ruins. This forced the government to make the drug illegal. But that only made the situation worse. The law couldn’t prevent the people from taking the drug which grew wild all over the island. On the contrary the fact that the drug was illegal merely encouraged people to take it. Eventually the government found a better solution. They exported the drug to other countries. This saved the islanders from having to work more than one day a week, and allowed them to spend the rest of their time sitting in the sun without a care of the world.2. Listen again and then supply the missing information in the following passage.Part 2. Statements. 2. Exercises. Listen and then choose the answer which is closest in meaning to the statements you hear.1. Since the 1990s I have been to the southern part of Europe several times. But I wouldn’t mind another package holiday in Spain.2. If Tom could have repaired the roof of his own house he wouldn’t have called in a builder and paid him a packet.3. Jane said that she would be happy to come to our graduation. But she has to work on her assignment every evening this week.4. I am kind of busy now and have no time to look at this proposal for you. How does late this afternoon sound?5. I am not the only one in the school of economics to graduate with honors. There are a number of others.6. Do you really ask me to cook for the children over the weekend? To be frank with you I would rather do anything but cook.7. You have decided to take another semester of biology. You must be kidding. I know you didn’t even take the introductory course.8. In my garden there are a great variety of plants. I grow some plants for their flowers and others for their leaves.9. The other day Sally felt greatly embarrassed in the bank branch, because her check bounced with so many people looking at her strangely.10. I have known Jack for so many years. If I had known he was in the hospital I would have visited him.11. The earliest flight from Washington to New York is a t 6 o’clock. If that’s full there is another one at 7 o’clock.12. Alice is now taking an intensive spoken English course but her writing has obviouslyimproved since she started to focus on written English.13. These 2 months I had been doing a part time teaching job, so I have enough money to last the rest of the semester.14. The summer position we advertized in the paper is still available. If you are interested why don’t you come to our office for an interview?15. I spent the whole weekend totally absorbed in this biography. And I still haven’t finished reading it.16. The woman must have been unfairly fined. She was just not strong enough to have caused so much damage.17. Bored without those poorly constructed plots and unrealistic characters I never want to see another film about space travel.18. People staying too long playing games in front of a computer, do so at the risk of their own health.19. I hear that Michel turned down that job. Well, the hours were convenient, but she wouldn’t be able to make ends meet.20. Tom sees no need of owning a car. He would sooner do without a car than pay all that money for one.Part 3. 1. A tiny village in France. Listen to the following passage about a small village and then choose the correct answer to each question you hear.Once every year for the last few years we have visited our friends in a small tiny little village in the middle of France. And they bought a cowshed, and it was literally a cowshed not fit to live in. And they have gradually ma de it better and renovated it. And it’s in a beautiful position. It’s on the top of a hill. And for miles around you can see this beautiful countryside. And I think only one another house. So you do need a car and you take the car into the tiny little village where there are about 4 or 5 shops and a very nice restaurant where you can go and have a 5 course meal for very little money. And also near is a very big lake, because this place is in the DorDon, and there are lots of lakes there. And we go there most afternoons and wind surf and sail. Also there is a very nice market, French Market, there once a week, where you get lovely parties, lovely fresh fish, really good fresh fish and lovely bowls and baskets which the local people have made. I like this part of France very much. But I think it’s a shame that there are too many English people there.Questions:1) How often does the speaker visit his friends in France?2) In which part of France do his friends live?3) What was their house before they modernized it?4) Where is the house located?5) According to the passage which of the following statements is not true?2. I came from a small town. Listen to the following passage about a town in the US, and then choose the correct answer to each question you hear.I come from a place, I come from the northern United States, Rochester Minnesota. It’s a town of about 50,000 people. And it’s a very clean town. It’s an ordinary town, fairly wealthy, but it’s a bit strange because there are a lot of transience,a lot of people who don’t live there. It’s the home of mild clinic. So there are thousands and thousands of people who come every year. The other thing is there are also a lot of foreign residents, a lot of doctors and nursesare from other countries, and so it makes what could be a really dull mid-west town something special. The library is very good. Cultural events are much more interesting than the rest of Minnesota, and actually it’s not a bad place to grow up. On the other hand I was dying to leave there. And all I could think of was getting away from the mid-west in the cold winters. You have about 6 months when it’s almost too cold to go outside. A lot of the buildings are designed so that you can walk from one to the other underground. There is a big pedestrian subway system so you can avoid all these snow.Questions:1) According to the passage what is unusual about the town as described by the speaker?2) About how many people are there in the town?3) Who are the foreign residents in the town?4) In which parts of the United States is the town situated?5) How does the speaker feel about being a child there?6) How did the people in the town avoid the snow?3. What kind of city is it? Listen to the following passage about Tokyo. And then choose the correct answer to each question you hear. What kind of city is it? It’s a very modern city. I expected that Tokyo would be quite old. But there are very few parts of it which are old in fact at all. Because it was fire bombed during the second world war by the Americans. There are one or two temples that survived, but basically it’s a city that’s being built since 1945. A lot of it is low rise, one, two, three storeys houses because of the earthquake danger, because it gets lots of earthquakes. Once you have mastered a little bit of Japanese it’s relatively easy to get around Tokyo, because they get excellent subway system and it’s quick and easy to get around. The problem is of course Tokyo is the city of 13,14,15 million people and they all want to get around at exactly the same time. So especially if you are travelling in the rush hours, 8 o’clock in the morning, 5 o’clock at night, it is a question in many of the big stations being pushed onto the train. They paid students a bit of pocket money to do this. Right in the center of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace. And that’s set in delightful gardens, but it is completely closed to the public, so nobody have seen it. In the rest of Tokyo there are 10, 12 public gardens but they tend to get very filled up of people especially during national holidays. Other than that it’s just street after street, and block after block very similar houses as I say one or two storied houses which just go on and on for mile after mile, because Tokyo extends hundreds of square miles, a massive city.Questions:1) What’s special with most of the buildings in Tokyo?2) Why is it relatively easy to get around Tokyo according to the speaker?3) How do you get on the trains in the busy periods of the day?4) Why is it a problem to go to the public gardens?5) In which part of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace located?Part 4. Listening and translation. 2. Exercises.1. Sentence translation. Listen and translate each sentence you have heard into Chinese. Then write it in the space given below.1) I am afraid we will have to change our appointment for tomorrow morning. Something unexpected came up. And I have to handle that first.2) We wish to get in touch with the local firm and set up a joint venture. We are planning to expand into the Asian market.3) I can’t decide now. I’ll have to phone my head office and inquire before I can give you a definite answer.4) The meeting was cancelled because the chairman of the board came down with the flu. He will stay away from his office for the next 2 or 3 days.5) Over 1 billion people world wide are over-weight. And that number will increase to 1.5 billion by 2015 unless current trends are reversed.2. Passage translation. Listen and translate each passage you have heard into Chinese. Then write it in the space given below. You may take notes while you are listening.1) Now in this industrial world people are inclined to choose material possessions. This is true of doctors too. The high income of doctor is the envy of the other people. Many high school graduates are eager to get into medical colleges, and countless girls consider doctors to be their best choice of husbands. For many years the public has charged that doctors in public hospitals demand money from patients. The amount of money the patients give determines the kind of treatment they receive.2) Products of our company received considerable attention of the exhibition visitors. We held many efficient business meetings and our stand was visited by over 6000 people. We established new business net works. After the exhibition we continued working on contact established during the event. We are very happy with the results of participation. The results are very important for us that the exhibition was held in a new exhibition hall. It was very light and spacious and is very convenient both for exhibitors and visitors.Unit FivePart one the inhabitants居民, 住户, 栖息的动物of a Small IslandRationally / `ræʃənəli /To discourage from使某人丧失(做某事的)信心; 使某人泄气Part twoWith honorsTo bounce使某物)(碰到硬物)弹回Part threeCowshed 牛棚LiterallyTo renovate / renəveɪt; ˋrɛnəvet/修复(尤指旧建筑物); 整修To windsurf 划帆板帆板运动windsurfingTransient短暂的; 片刻的; 转瞬即逝的:Pedestrian pəˋdɛstrɪən subway为行人而设的地铁To firebomb A bomb used to start a fireDordogne 法国西南部,河名,英国旅游者喜欢的地方Pate头; 脑袋,肉酱; 鱼酱Minnesota in the US 工业,农业(milk)Mayo a famous US surgeonPart fourVenture工作项目或事业; (尤指有风险的)商业, 企业at a `venture (fml 文) at random; Joint venture 合资企业by chance 随便地; 碰运气地.In this industrialized world 工业化社会Be inclined to 倾向于Material possessions 物质财产High incomeEnvyHigh school graduate 高中毕业生Medical collegeCountless girl 无数的女孩Public hospital 公立医院Charge 指控The amount of money the patients give determines the kind of treatment they receive. 病人支付多少钱决定了他们接受何种治疗ProductsReceive considerable attention 获得广泛关注Hold efficient business meetings 举行高效的商务会谈Establish Business networks业务网络Continue working on contacts established during the event 与新建的客户保持密切的联系Results of our participation参展的成果Exhibitor 展商visitors 参观者light and spacious 宽敞明亮Enquire 咨询Come down with the flu 染上流感病倒了He will stay away from his office 病假休息。

1.4 Speech by Wang Guangya at Princeton UniversityLadies and Gentlemen,Good evening.I am honored to be invited to your seminar tonight. For me, for my colleagues and for many other Chinese, Princeton has long been a familiar name. With a history longer than the country, it has produced many outstanding people,Woodrow Wilson, the 28th US president, Albert Einstein, the great scientist, and T. S. Eliot, the famous poet, to name but a few. As former president Bill Clinton said in 1996 at the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of Princeton,“At every pivotal moment in American history, Princeton, its leadership, faculty and its students have played a crucial role.”I am more pleased to learn that all of you have a keen interest in China. Though our two countries are geographically far apart, we have a great deal incommon in the everyday life. While many Chinese enjoy Hollywood movies and McDonald’s fast food, many Americans find that their clothes and daily necessities are made in China. I hope that today’s seminar will help you gain a better understanding of China and its foreign policy, thus deepening further our friendship and cooperation.1.5 新工厂落成典礼上的讲话各位尊敬的来宾,女士们,先生们:下午好!

4.4 Preserve core values of the Lunar New Year
To people of Chinese descendant around the world, the Lunar New Year (also called Spring Festival) is undoubtedly the most important festival of the year. Dating back 3,000 years, it celebrates the passing of a peaceful year and welcomes the new one. The reunion dinner, eaten on New Year's Eve, is de rigueur, with members of the extended family gathering for the most significant meal of the year. Even the absent members will endeavour to return home in time for it. It underscores the supreme importance of the family in Chinese culture, and aims at strengthening the sense of togetherness and cohesion. The way people celebrate the New Year embodies two important core values. The first value is the sense of family togetherness; members of multi-generation families are all there to have a big reunion dinner. Everyone will follow this custom. The female members are always held responsible for preparing the dinner, and some rich families may take on extra hands. the second value lies in the happy visits mutually made between friends and relatives, a good way to strengthen kinship and friendship. However, economic development has resulted in some changes in lifestyles. After a busy year, people are tied of preparing for the reunion dinner, and would rather hold their reunion dinner in posh restaurants, despite the exorbitant costs. The festival door-to-door visits have given way to New Year greetings via telephone or text messages. Some families even go to such extremes as to travel and seek temporary refuge in a hotel so as to avoid being vto 4.3 1. Why to take notes? 1) The length of the source text usually lasts for 3~5 minutes; 2) Figures, proper names, listing need exact transcoding. 3) Problems with memory; Short-term memory fades away. 2. Functions of note-taking 1) is to supplement memory efficiency so as to ensure accuracy in work. An interpreter must realize from the very beginning of his training that it is always memory on the basis of correct comprehension that plays the major role in ensuring accuracy in interpreting, not note-taking. The most important thing he should do first in interpreting is to focus on listening. For an interpreter, it cannot be stressed more that taking notes is only a means to supplement or enhance memory or to remind him/her of the received information. The act of taking notes should not take up too much of attention or effort.

They should be written in columns of 2 or 3 inch width in a pad which is vertically long enough so that each “sense group” or “important formulation” represented by a word or symbol in the notes occupies one half or even one line, and that the next sense group is noted in another line- leaving enough space in between. Draw two short slanting lines to mark the end of a long para.
