5) Better to take notes in the target language
In order to facilitate the “listening-transference-speaking” process, it is
preferable to solve the problems of transference while the notes are being taken. No matter what language you use in note-taking, you should see to it that it is easy to write, remember and read with definitive meaning.
Unit 5 The technique of Note-taking
Part 1 Four major components of interpreting skills
1. Skills
of Listening & Analysis memorization(Instant memory- short-term memory- long-term memory) transference expression
Part 2 Working mode of interpreting
1. Multi-tasking:
SL --
Listening & Analysis Memorization --- TL Transference Expression
2. It requires the skill of coordination of efforts. 分心协力
b. because time is limited c. too many signs or symbols may be a danger

B. Each word (symbol or sign) should represent a key word, a sense group or an important formulation.
Instant memory –0.25s ~ 2s short-term memory-5s~20s ~ 1m long-term memory- several days, several weeks, several months, several years;
2. Process of Interpreting Deverbalization ~ Extract of the meaning Meaning (Four major components ) SL --------------- TL
Part 4. Why, What & How
1. Why to take notes? 1) The length of the source text usually lasts for 3~5 minutes; 2) Figures, proper names, listing need exact transcoding. 3) Problems with memory; Short-term memory fades away. 2. Functions of note-taking 1) is to supplement memory efficiency so as to ensure accuracy in work. An interpreter must realize from the very beginning of his training that it is always memory on the basis of correct comprehension that plays the major role in ensuring accuracy in interpreting, not note-taking. The most important thing he should do first in interpreting is to focus on listening. For an interpreter, it cannot be stressed more that taking notes is only a means to supplement or enhance memory or to remind him/her of the received information. The act of taking notes should not take up too much of attention or effort.
Part 3 Note-taking Vs other skill components Interaction NT Vs Listening comprehension Memorization Reproduction Is it possible to take notes? Then, why to take notes? what to be taken as notes? How to take notes?
2) Clues for recalling; While it is essential for an interpreter to be able to use his/her shortterm memory, it is highly important for him/her to be able to use notes to help remembering, especially when the input is longer than what the short-term memory can manage. 3) Help to visualize the structure of SL speech; 4) Help to organize TL reproduction. Practice 1
2) Frequently occurring notions and words; 3) Shortened form of writing
y

4. How to take notes 1)Briefly-----Abbreviation & symbols; A. Write as few words or symbols as possible a. because he should focus on listening first
Notes are highly individualized, created by each individual interpreter for personal use. For example, some interpreters think that the target language should be used in notes, that is to say, English for C-E interpreting and Chinese for E-C rendering, some find it more convenient to use the source language and still some prefer to use the combination of the two.
They should be written in columns of 2 or 3 inch width in a pad which is vertically long enough so that each “sense group” or “important formulation” represented by a word or symbol in the notes occupies one half or even one line, and that the next sense group is noted in another line- leaving enough space in between. Draw two short slanting lines to mark the end of a long para.
3. What to be taken as notes? 1) Selectively---note ideas, not words; 2) Topical words, key words; 3) Logical links; But successful identification of key words and logical links needs thorough understanding and analysis.
6) See to it that the notes are logical and legible.
7) The interpreter’s notes are essentially individual in character. A beginner should find out what type of notes will be best suited for him. For example, some interpreters think that the target language should be used in notes, that is to say, English for C-E interpreting and Chinese for E-C rendering, some find it more convenient to use the source language and still some prefer to use the combination of the two. 6) See to it that the notes are logical and legible. Practise
5. Guideline for note-taking: 1. Concentration on the speech ; Concentration on the meaning and idea; 2. Take notes consistently; 3. Take notes selectively; 4. Translate ideas into your own words; 5. Organize notes into some sort of logical form with symbols.
