IEC 1.1TEXT I Never Say GoodbyeWhen I was ten I was <2>suddenly {6}( ) with the {10}anguish of moving from the only home I had ever known. My whole life, {4}brief as it ( ) , had been ( ) in that big old house, {7}gracefully <2>( ) with the {6}laughter and <2>( ) of four <3>generations.When the final day ( ) , I ran to the {10}haven of the small back {9}porch and sat <2>alone, {9}shuddering, as <2>tears ( ) up from my heart. <2>Suddenly I felt a hand ( ) on my <2>shoulder. I looked ( ) to see my {4}grandfather. “It isn’t easy, is it, {11}Billy?” he said <2>softly, <2>sitting down on the steps <3>beside me.“{4}Grandpa,” I <2>replied ( ) my <2>tears, “how can I ever say goodbye to you and all my friends?”For a moment he just {4}stared ( ) into the <3>apple trees. “<3>Goodbye is such a <3>sad word,” he said. “It seems too final, too <2>cold, for friends to use. We seem to have so many ways of saying goodbye and they all have one thing in ( ) : <3>sadness”.I continued to look ( ) his face. He <3>gently took my hand in his. “Come with me,my friend,” he {4}whispered.We walked, hand ( ) hand, to his <2>favorite place in the front <3>yard, ( ) a <3>huge red {!}rosebush ( ) {9}conspicuously <2>alone.“What do you see here, {11}Billy?” He asked.I looked at the <2>flower, not knowing what to say, and then answered, “I see ( )<2>soft and <2>beautiful, {4}Grandpa.”{7}Kneeling, he pulled me ( ) . “It isn’t just the {7}roses that are {2}beautiful, {11}Billy. It’s that special place in your heart ( ) makes them so.”His eyes ( ) mine again. “{11}Billy, I planted these {7}roses a long, long time ago -- before your mother was even a {2}( ) . I put them into the <3>soil the day my first son was <2>born. It was my way of saying thank-you to <3>God. That boy’s name was {11}Billy, just ( ) yours. I used to watch him <2>( ) {11}roses for his mother.”I saw my {4}grand father’s <2>tears. I had never seen him cry before. His voice became {9}( ) .“One day a <2>terrible war came, and my son, like so many sons, went away to ( ) a great {4}evil. He and I walked to the <2>train <2>station together...Three months later a {9}telegram ( ) . My son had <2>died in some <3>tiny <2>village in {11}Italy. All I could think ( ) was that the last thing I said to him in this life was goodbye.”{4}Grandpa slowly stood up. “Don’t ever say goodbye, {11}Billy. Don’t ever give ( ) to the <3>sadness and the {4}loneliness of that word. I want you to remember ( ) the {4}joy and the <2>happiness of those times when you first said <3>hello ( ) a friend. Take that special <3>hello and <2>lock it ( ) within you -- in that place in your heart where <2>summer is an ( ) time. When you and your friends must ( ) , I want you to ( ) {2}deep within you and bring back that first <3>hello.”A year and half later, my {4}grandfather became {5}( ) <2>ill. When he returned ( ) several weeks in the <2>hospital, he wanted his bed next ( ) the <2>window, where he could see his {9}beloved {!}rosebush. Then the family was {9}( ) and I returned ( ) the old house. It was ( ) that the oldest {4}grandchildren would be allowed to say their ( ) .When it came to my ( ) , I noted how tired he looked. His eyes were closed and his {4}breathing was slow and hard.I took his hand as <3>gently as he had once taken ( ) .“<3>Hello, {4}Grandpa,” I {4}whispered. His eyes slowly ( ) .“<3>Hello, my friend,” he said, with a {4}( ) <2>smile. His eyes closed again and I moved ( ) .I was standing ( ) his {!}rosebush when an <3>uncle came to tell me that my {4}grandfather had died. Remembering {4}Grandpa’s words, I reached {2}deep ( ) me for those special feelings that had made ( ) our friendship. <2>Suddenly, and <2>truly, I knew what he had <3>( ) about never saying <3>goodbye -- about <2>refusing to give in to the <3>sadness.IEC 1.3TEXT I Whatever Happened to Manners?Do you remember a time when people were a little {2}nicer, a little {2}softer, a little{3}gentler ( ) each other? I certainly do, and I feel that ( ) of the world has somehow gotten ( ) from that. I see such a difference in {11}New York City, for example, from when I first moved here more than 20 years ago: people {3}( ) into {6}elevators without giving those {3}inside a chance to get ( ) first, never saying “{2}Thank you.” when others ( ) a door open for them, or “{2}Please.”when they want a {!}coworker to hand them something, never ( ) a {2}wave or {6}nod of {5}( ) when another {3}motorist lets them ( ) out into {3}traffic.We get {4}lazy, and in our {4}laziness we think that something like a simple “{2}Thank you.” doesn’t really matter. But it can matter very much. The fact is ( ) no matter how {2}nicely we {2}dress, how {2}beautifully we {5}( ) our homes, or how lovely our {2}dinner parties are, we can’t be {2}truly {3}stylish without good {3}( ) .In fact, I think of good {3}manners ( ) a sort of {2}hidden {2}beauty {2}secret. Haven’t you {2}noticed that the kindest, most {3}generous people seem to ( ) getting {2}prettier? They become {11}Cary {11}Grant or {11}Lauren {11}Bacall right ( ) our eyes. It’s {2}funny how that happens, but it does.Take the {!}long-lost art of saying “{2}Thank you.”Like {2}( ) a little {9}lipstick or making sure your {2}hair is {4}neat, getting ( ) the {2}habit of saying “{2}Thank you” can make you feel better ( ) yourself, and then you look better to everyone ( ) you. A {9}gracious {3}manner not only ( ) an {2}excellent example for your children and {4}grandchildren but it adds ( ) {!}panache to your {3}image.{3}( ) {2}ThankingOf course, saying “Thank you.” does {2}( ) for the person on the receiving ( ) too. I recently got a {!}thank-you note from a {2}guest who {2}( ) a 40th birthday party that {11}Frank and I {4}( ) for {11}Frank’s {9}daughter-in-law. The note was lovely enough, but even lovelier was the fact that the guest had also included a {7}recipe ( ) a {3}dish I’d {8}complimented her ( ) at an earlier {3}gathering. It was a {2}sweet {7}( ) that made me feel {9}terrific and put me in a great {3}( ) . What a {3}gift!Many of us know we should write thank-you ( ) , but we think we don’t have the time or {3}energy. Now, I know we all have {2}busy lives, but I {5}( ) the note my {2}guest sent me didn’t take long to write. If you feel like a feel (heel?) because you’ve put ( ) sending a {2}card, write a note that says, “I ( ) have done this two weeks ago, but I didn’t want to let another day go ( ) without telling you how much I {2}( ) your party.”It;s much better than not writing at all.{4}Magic WordsJust as ( ) as a thank-you note is the simple {3}phrase “{2}Excuse me.”Don’t you just {2}hate it when someone {3}( ) an {3}enormous {!}carry-on {2}bag into your head when he’s {2}barreling ( ) the {9}aisle to {3}board an {7}airplane -- and then doesn’t {4}( ) to say he’s {2}sorry? But when someone does stop and turn around and {5}genuinely {5}apologizes, doesn’t it {6}( ) away most -- if not all -- of the {7}irritation you felt?Same for holding the door ( ) for others when you see their hands are ( ) . Before the sixteenth of October 1995, I was the most {9}( ) person in the world. I had no {2}( ) and was just living life up. I never thought that ( ) could happen to me or my friends. We were {10}invincible. That is, until the word {5}AIDS ( ) into my life. For 10 years {11}David and I were the ( ) of friends. Then we got to high school and things started to change. We were in different classes, so we didn’t {2}( ) out as much. It {4}( ) me but I thought that we were both just ( ) up, and there were more friends where he came from. Then I began to {2}notice that he wasn’t in school a lot, and was {2}sick more than ( ) . So I called him and he {2}hung up ( ) me. I didn’t know what to do, so once again I {2}( ) it off. Then one day I saw {11}David in the {6}mall and I {6}( ) him as to why we were not friends anymore. He pulled me {4}aside and broke ( ) in {2}tears and said that he was dying. I didn’t believe him. Sure, I had heard about {5}AIDS, but that it was a {7}homosexual {2}( ) and it didn’t {3}( ) young people, so I said that it was a {2}( ) {2}joke and left. When I got home things started to ( ) sense. I ran to my room and {3}cried. {11}David was only 17; he couldn’t die. Then I felt so bad that we had grown so far {2}( ) . I called {11}David, asking him to come ( ) so we could talk. When he came over I saw a seriousness in him that I had never seen before. He looked so old, too old ( ) his age. I asked how it happened. {11}David had had {2}unprotected {3}sex once and now had to pay ( ) his life. I was so {3}angry. I have never felt so powerless in my whole life. When things had ( ) {2}wrong before this, I could always {3}rely ( ) my parents to make things better. There was nothing that they could do this time. I had to {3}( ) it all on my own.{11}David and I became very ( ) again, and it seemed that I was the only one there for him. {11}David ( ) the {3}decision to tell people about his {2}disease. There was no ( ) in {2}hiding it; sooner or later people would find ( ) . People looked at him as if he had a {9}( ) , and our friends from school wanted nothing to do ( ) him. Soon after that they wanted nothing to do with me. All of a {2}( ) I felt that I had the {2}disease. I didn’t know what to do. My whole life was changing so {2}fast that I couldn’t keep ( ) . Once again I was growing up and {3}realized that our friendship {3}( ) everything to me. Also, I couldn’t turn my back ( ) him when he needed me the most. So I {2}( ) it out and lost most of my friends. The ones that still talked with me didn’t come too close in ( ) that they would {2}( ) the {2}disease. The thing was, I didn’t even have {5}AIDS, so why did my friends {2}treat me ( ) this? I was being {2}treated this way because {6}teenagers are not used to ( ) with {2}situations like this, and don’t know how to {3}( ) . So how could I {2}( ) them since I would have done the same thing? As time ( ) on, {11}David became very {2}ill. There was nothing that I could do ( ) watch him die. {11}David found out that he had ( ) {2}blown {5}AIDS. This to me {3}meant {3}death was ( ) to come and all too {2}quickly. I wasn’t {2}( ) to let him die, not yet anyway. There was so many things that I wanted to do and say, but couldn’t find the ( ) . I went to {2}doctor after {2}doctor with him, and saw him go ( ) so much. Everyone said that I must ( ) a {3}positive {3}attitude for his {5}( ) , because {3}attitude {3}means everything. So, in times of {2}stress I was the one that had to keep things together. I {2}( ) all my {3}emotions {4}aside and was strong for him.My mom had had a {3}trip ( ) for the whole family for some time now, and still wanted to go. She thought that the {3}trip would ( ) me good; she said that I was not the one that was dying. I couldn’t ( ) that she said that to me, but to make her {2}happy I went. We were ( ) for about 2 weeks, and when I came back the ( ) thing I did was go to see {11}David. That was when I saw {5}AIDS ( ) the first time. I didn’t even {2}recognize him. {11}David had lost {3}( ) , had {4}purple {!}lesions all ( ) his body, and was very {3}pale. He couldn’t even get up when he saw me. He was {!}bedridden. I still had to be the strong one and ( ) everything in. I had brought him {2}stuff from the {4}ocean, his {2}( ) place. We talked about my {3}trip and anything else we could think of. Then he ( ) asleep because he could no longer ( ) {4}awake for long {3}periods of time.On the second of May 1996, {11}David was ( ) in the hospital. This gave him the feeling that there was no more hope left, and that he was going to die. I still had to {3}( ) my {3}positive {9}outlook for him. He needed that ( ) me. One day he looked at me and said, “{11}Faye, I am dying; let’s accept that and deal with it. I know what I did was {2}wrong and now I ( ) to deal with it. All I want you to do is ( ) remember me, {2}enjoy life and be careful.”For the first time in front of him, {3}I cried. I knew that it wouldn’t be ( ) before he was gone {6}forever. He shouldn’t have to deal with this ( ) such a young age. Towards the end of May he became so {2}sick that the hospital {2}staff had a {7}bubble around him, so he wouldn’t {2}( ) our bad {9}germs. I {2}hated to see him like that, and every day it became {2}worse. I had ( ) to {3}realize that any day now he would die. At night I would {2}wonder if he would ( ) it through. School was over now, so I spent every hour I could in the hospital. He was ( ) to me. I felt bad for the time that we had lost and how I wasn’t even going to ( ) for our friendship. The fifth of June, 1996 {2}( ) the end of my best friend {11}David’s life. He went {2}peacefully. That was a {3}comfort all ( ) its own. In a way I was {2}glad that it was over, for he was no longer ( ) {3}pain. All the {3}emotions that I had ( ) in came {3}rushing out as I {3}realized that I would never see {11}David again. His mother said that I had kept him {2}( ) and that she was {5}grateful that I was her son’s last friend. It hasn’t been a year yet, but I have ( ) so much since then that I am no longer that {9}carefree {6}teenager. I now {3}educate people ( ) {5}AIDS, which to me is keeping {11}David’s {2}( ) {2}alive. They have {2}( ) jobs and {2}( ) time and {2}financial {3}( ) , but they are also very {3}( ) to {4}ensure that their only child does not become a {4}lonely child. So, what are the {10}pros and {10}cons of having a second child? Is an only child a {4}lonely child? That is what so many {3}couples are very much concerned ( ) and {6}eager to understand. The {2}issue of whether to have a second child is one of the most difficult {2}issues that parents nowadays face. A concern that is often heard with {2}( ) to single child is whether one child {2}necessarily {3}means a {4}lonely child. Many {!}single-child parents feel a {9}stigma {3}( ) with their {3}decision to have only one child. There are no other children in the family for the child to {3}associate with, and this may lead ( ) the child feeling {4}lonely at ( ) , {7}especially ( ) {6}vacations.Another common {2}argument ( ) having just one child is that an only child may be more {5}spoiled than one with {10}siblings. Many people believe that a single child will not have learned to {6}negotiate ( ) others, and {3}respect the {!}give-and-take {3}involved in many {2}relationships. Some think this may ( ) the child less {4}capable of {8}interacting well ( ) people his or her own ( ) than one who has been raised with {10}siblings.{3}( ) these {2}arguments, the number of parents {2}choosing to have only one child is increasing in many parts of the world. In the US, for example, 14 {5}percent of women between 18 and 34 plan to have just one child, and this {5}percentage is expected to rise. The same {3}trend can be ( ) in the {11}UK. {3}According ( ) the Family {4}Ppolicy Studies Center, the {4}( ) number of {11}British children being {2}born each year has {2}declined. In {11}Japan, the {2}( ) number of children {2}born per family had {2}declined ( ) 1.42 by 1996, while ( ) {6}statistics {8}cite less than one child. This has led to {5}government concerns about ( ) an increasing {2}population of {7}( ) people inthe future; it is {5}predicted that, by 2020, a third of the {2}population in {11}Japan will be ( ) 65 or over. For some {!}single-child parents, {2}particularly those with {2}( ) {3}careers, the pressures of {8}devoting time and {3}( ) to a second child can seem too {7}overwhelming, resulting ( ) them {3}electing to have no more children. For other parents, the {2}financial {7}( ) of having a second child may be the {8}prime ( ) . {3}According to {5}government {4}surveys, many {3}couples in {11}Japan {2}choose not to have large ( ) as the cost of supporting a child ( ) to the age of 18 is {2}estimated to be around 20 {6}million {7}yen, {5}equivalent ( ) around US $160,000.{8}Advocates of{!}single-child families {2}( ) that there are {2}advantages for the child as well as the parents. With just one child, they suggest, there is no {4}potential ( ) family {2}arguments {3}arising ( ) {10}favoritism or {10}sibling {6}jealousy. {3}Moreover, with only one child, the parents can give, and the child can receive, more {2}( ) time and {2}attention. This often leads to ( ) {!}self-esteem which, {2}combined ( ) increased {2}( ) , can lead to the child being more {3}confident.{4}Unfortunately, there is no simple ( ) to the question of whether or not to have a second child. The {4}circumstances {3}affecting each ( ) of parents are {4}unique, and what is {4}appropriate ( ) one family may not be for another. The important thing, in the ( ) , is to make a {3}decision that both you and your {9}spouse feel {3}confident ( ) .IEC 1.7TEXT I When Lightning StruckI was in the {3}tiny {4}bathroom in the back of the {3}plane when I ( ) the {9}slamming {10}jolt, and then the {7}horrible {9}swerve that {2}threw me ( ) the door. I was sure that even if I {3}( ) the {3}plane {4}crash, I’d have a {3}couple of broken {3}fingers ( ) all the TLC. “Are you {2}okay?” she kept asking me.Among the many feelings going ( ) my head during those {!}excruciating 20 minutes was {4}pride -- {4}pride ( ) how well everybody on {3}( ) was {3}behaving. No one {6}( ) . No one {4}screamed. We {5}chatted about the lives we now felt {6}( ) to be living, as difficult or {3}rocky as they might be. An older woman ( ) him her box of {2}expensive {11}Lindt {4}chocolates, still {2}untouched, {2}( ) with a lovely {7}bow. “I shouldn’t be eating them anyhow,”she said. 新标准商务英语综合教程 1 Unit 1 A matter of choice 译文
