Fred Reichheld, a leader beyond the subject of customer loyalty, 33 this in his latest book, The One Number You Need To Grow. By analyzing the 35 , Reichheld believes it is possible to predict how fast a firm will grow compared with its 36 .Let’s take this notion a step 37 and look at referrals to customers loyalty programs themselves. Not only do customers refer people to companies, they also refer people to loyalty programs. Eighty-two percent of Americans 38 in customer loyalty programs have referred friends and families to their favorite loyalty programs, according to the “2004/2005 Customer Loyalty Research Report” by marketing 39 firm Parago. I had to take the bus home. For several days, my age was questioned by the bus driver. As I was embarrassed at the driver making a scene (吵闹), the first time, I paid the £1.05, instead of just 70p. When I got off I asked for my 35p back and was told to go to the bus station with proof of my age.The next day I asked once again for a child single from Blagrove to Wotton Bassett, and the male driver asked my date of birth, and then for proof. Is everyone expected to carry a birth certificate or passport around because of arrogant bus drivers? I gave the driver 70p which was the only money I had on me. I told the driver this and he stopped the bus.The other passengers were clearly frustrated and told him not to be so stupid. One of the adults knew me and tried to tell him that I was only 14 and at school but he ignored her. Luckily another passenger gave the driver the extra 35 p so that he’d drive on.How does someone like this get a job dealing with the public when he acts like this? I understand that Stagecoach is short of drivers but I think this particular driver is just going to make customers feel threatened and reluctant to travel with him.I’m sure there are other people who must have complained about his attitude and something should be done about him.I’d like my money refunded and would hope that in the future the drivers would believe what they are told.Yours faithfully(Miss) Emma Harrow41. Choose the best answer for each statement or question fromthe four choices marked A, B, C and D, and mark the corresponding letter on the AnswerSheet with a single line throw the center.Passage OneMost products must be contained before they can be moved from one place to another. To function successfully, the package must contain the product. This containment function of packaging makes a huge contribution to protecting the environment. Faulty packaging (or under packaging) can lead to spillages and result in major losses and serious damage.Packaging plays a vital role in protecting products as they go from the manufacturer to the consumer. Packaging is designed to ensure that the product reaches the consumer in good condition. The product is protected:● during tra nsport and distribution;● from climatic effects (heat and cold, moisture, vapour, drying atmospheres);● from hazardous substances and contaminants;● from infestation.Packaging can also provide supplementary product protection. This may be achieved by forms of cushioning such as shredded papers, sheets of corrugated paperboard (瓦楞纸板), foamed plastic or wrappings. Thermoformed plastic trays (for biscuits) or inner paperboard partitions (in a carton of wine) protect fragile goods. Structures that resist damage can also be created by tightly enclosing products in shrinkable or stretchable films or in tighter and smaller bundles of paperboard and corrugate.Packaging serves as a shield against infection by contamination. Improved standards of public health and processing sanitation (卫生设备) have contributed to the reduction of infection around the world. Food quality and safety are guaranteed by tamper proof packaging. Child proof closures on household chemicals/ detergents, pharmaceuticals and care products are devices developed by the packaging industry to protect against misuse.Food products are subject to biological spoilage caused by the normal enzyme(酶)-induced ageing and by microbiological decomposition caused by bacteria, yeasts (酵母) and moulds. Packaging assists inthe preservation of foods and can reduce the rate of spoilage and decomposition. Packaging therefore contributes to food safety, quality and nutrition. Packaging technology has made major contributions to advancing food science and food safety and reduction of food spoilage.A package must protect what it sells and sell what it protects. Modern methods of consumer marketing would fail were it not for the messages communicated on the package. It is not only the primary package that must communicate. Warehouses and distribution centers would be less efficient if secondary and tertiary packages lacked labels or carried incomplete details. When international trade is involved and different languages are spoken, the use of unambiguous, readily understood symbols on the distribution package is essential.Packaging protects the interests of consumers. The information contained on the package tells the consumer what the product is and how to use it. Such information includes: product brand names and descriptions; manufacturer’s name and address; quantity; use-by dates; directions fro use; storage and disposal; and cautionary or emergency information. Food packaging lists: ingredients; new weight of the contents and the number of servings; methods of preparation; recipes and serving ideas; and often the nutritional benefits of the contents. Much of this information is required by law.The printed codes on packages (including bar codes) help ensure the control of the flow of products to the consumer during bulk-distribution. Information includes: quantity, price, inventory levels, lot numbers, distribution routes, size, elapsed time since packaging, color, and merchandising and premium data. The information provided on packaging allows the consumer to make informed decisions on the product’s purchase and use.51. The main idea of this passage may be expressed as __________.A. the roles of packagingB. the types of packagingC. the importance of packagingD. the development of packaging52. Which function of packaging is not discussed in the passage?A. Communication function.B. Protection function.C. Containment function.D. Or maybe you don't trust cyberspace? It may be that you're intimidated by the changeover or feel that it will take too much time and effort? The fact is paperless invoicing is easy, convenient and inexpensive. With electronic invoices, it's estimated that a company can save 80% of the cost associated with paper billing. Additionally, those companies purchasing products are able to save money by paying via the Net without any late fees and saving money on postage, stationery and envelopes.Labor costs are lessened on both sides of the exchange. However, of the 18 billion invoices generated each year in Europe, most are still submitted on paper. For EU member nations, there has been a problem of incorporating Value Added Tax (VA T) rates into an e-invoice that crosses national borders. If you're trading within the UK, this is not a problem, but when conducting business outside native environments, electronic invoices can be problematic. Over the past few years, after the EU issued the "E-Invoice Directive" (known as Directive 2001/115/EC) in January 2004, member nations have worked to help solve this problem. However, with legislation varying from country to country there are still difficulties in making e-invoices VA T compliant. All invoices must be V AT compliant as per the laws of the land of supply. Despite these challenges on the import/export front, you can still readily cut down on paperwork by submitting e-invoices within the UK.Another problem you may face has to do with a lack of standardization in using electronic invoicing, whether dealing within the UK or outside of its boundaries. There are numerous standards that are available to businesses, including those that start with the purchaser and those that are initiated by the supplier. In order to use an e-invoice system, you'll need to determine what type of structure best meets your billing needs.Even when you have decided to use electronic invoicing, there will be a period of training and adjustment whether your operation is small, medium or large. No matter how simple the system, you'll find that employees will be confused at times. This is especially true if your former system has been used for a long period of time. Also, even in this cyber-age, many of us still find comfort in having paper in our hands. In actual use of electronic invoicing, make sure that there is a sound system of back-ups in place. The fear that information might be lost is perhaps one of the biggest reasons for people clinging to the paper invoice. However, paper can be lost too, and unlike electronically generated bills once misplaced or thrown out, they are difficult to recreate. Paper invoices also take up a lot of room that can be used for office, storage or sales space.56. Paperless invoicing ___________.A. costs more than paper billingB. costs more laborC. saves money on postage, stationery and envelopesD. may result in late fees57. Electronic invoices can be problematic when __________.A. trading within the UKB. conducting business with foreign countriesC. doing business within native environmentsD. traveling across national borders58. A period of training and adjustment is necessary in order to use electronic invoicing because _______.A. the system is so complicatedB. the option is too largeC. employees are not good at using computersD. employees have problems in using the system59. What should be done to ensure a sound use of paperless invoicing?A. Structuring new standards for each business.B. Employing more professional employees.C. Adjusting computer systems.D. Having a sound system of back-up.60. The biggest reason why some people are against the electronic invoice is that __________.A. it is more expensive than the paper invoiceB. it is too difficult to learnC. the information of the electronic invoice may be more likely to be lostD. it’s difficult to recreate the electronic invoice once they are misplacedPart III TRANSLATING & WRITING (40 minutes) Section ADirections:Translate the following passage into Chinese and write the Chinese version on the Answer Sheet.61. It links the activities of the various parts of the organization and ensures that everyone is working towards a common goal. It is also extremely important for motivating employees. Staff need to know how they are getting on, what they are doing right and in which areas they could improve. Working alone can be extremely difficult and it is much easier if someone takes an interest and provides support. Employees need to understand why their job is important and how it contributes to the overall success of the firm. Personal communication should also include target setting. People usually respond well to goals, provided these are agreed between the manager and subordinate and not imposed. However, firms often have communications problems that can undermine their performance. In many cases, these problems occur because messages are passed on in an inappropriate way. There are, of course, several ways of conveying information to others in the organization. These include speaking to them directly, e-mailing, telephoning or sending a memo. The most appropriate method depends on what exactly it is you are communicating. For example, anything that is particularly sensitive or confidential, such as an employee’s appraisal, should be done face-to-face.One of the main problems for senior executives is that they do not have the time or resources needed to communicate effectively. In large companies, for example, it is impossible for senior managers to meet and discuss progress with each employee individually. Obviously this task can be delegated but at the cost of creating a gap between senior management and staff. As a result, managers are often forced to use other methods of communication, like memos or notes, even if they know these are not necessarily the most suitable means of passing on messages. The use of technology, such as e-mail, mobile phones and network systems, is speeding up communication immensely. However, this does not mean that more investment in technology automatically proves beneficial: systems can become outdated or employees may lack appropriate training. There are many communications tools now available but a firm cannot afford all of them. Even if it could, it does not actually need them all. The potential gains must be weighed up against the costs, and firms should realize that more communication does not necessarily mean better communication. As the number of people involved in an organization increase, the use of written communication rises even faster. Instead of a quick conversation to sort something out numerous messages can be passed backwards and forwards. This can lead to a tremendous amount of paperwork and is often less effective than face to face communication. When you are actually talking to someone, you can discuss things until you are happy they have understood and feedback is immediate. With written messages, however, you are never quite sure how it will be received. What you think you have said and what the other person thinks you have said can be very different.1. According to the writer, the best way of achieving effective communication is toA. adapt the message to suit a particular audience.B. make the content of messages brief and direct.C. select the most suitable means of conveying a particular message.D. ensure that information is targeted at the appropriate group of people.3. What does the writer say about the communication options available to senior managers?A. Sending memos to staff is one of the most efficient methods.B. It is important to find the time to discuss certain matters with staff.C. They should increase the range of options that they use.D. Getting junior managers to talk to staff can create different problems.4. What advice is given about the communication tools made available by technology?A. Aim to limit staff use of certain communication tools.B. Evaluate them in terms of the expenditure involved.C. Select them on the basis of the facilities they offer.D. Encourage more staff to attend training courses in their use.5. According to the writer, a problem with written communication is thatA. the message can be interpreted differently to what was intended.B. it can be easy for people to ignore the contents of a written message.C. most people are more comfortable with face-to-face communication.D. it is possible for correspondence to get lost within a large organization.Reading 2Tariffs ( 关税) may be used simply to obtain revenue. In some developing countries, revenue tariffs provide an important part of the government’s in come. Often, however, tariffs are protective, and are designed to carry out a particular economic policy. They may help to reduce a balance of payment deficit or to protect an infant industry against strong international competition from older corporations. A revenue tariff will always provide some protection, and a protection tariff will produce some revenue. Therefore, it is difficult to distinguish between revenue and protective tariffs from economic evidence alone. Many different types of non-tariff barriers have been used, but the best known of these are quota systems ( 配额制) . A quota is an upper limit which is set on imports of a commodity for a fixed period of time. Some quotas apply to the physical quantities of particular goods, whereas others are based on the total value of all imports. In the latter case, the quotas are usually combined with a system of exchange control in an attempt to prevent a balance of payment deficit. Quotas are also used to protect domestic industries. Under most quota systems, importers must obtain government licences for the goods they wish to import. It should be noted that a quota system is always protectionist and provides no revenues to the country. When a tariff is imposed on an import, the direct impact on price is to raise it by the amount of the tariff. Market factors, however, can modify this effect. Hence, the final price increase due to a tariff may be less than, equal to, or more than the amount of the tariff. In contrast, the impact of a quota on price is much harder to predict. The effects are particularly uncertain with goods which are not produced at all domestically. For instance, many countries do not have their own car industry, so that an import quota can cause a considerable shift in automobile prices.1. What’s the main purpose of imposing tariffs?_________A. Prohibit imports.B. Reduce a balance of payment deficit.C. Promote competition.D. Raise revenue and protect domestic industries.2. They may help to reduce a balance of payment deficit or to protect an infantindustry against strong international competition from older corporations.“Infant ”means_____.A. strongB. newC. childD. manufacturing3. In the latter case, the quotas are usually combined with a system of exchangecontrol in an attempt to prevent a balance of payment deficit. “The latter case ” refers to ______.A. quotas which are set on imports of a commodityB. quotas which apply to physical quantities of goodsC. quotas which are based on the total value of importsD. quotas which provide revenue to the country4. The final increase due to a tariff may be_______.A. less than the amount of the tariffB. equal to the amount of the tariffC. more than the amount of the tariffD. All of the above5. According to the passage, which statement is not true ?A. The best known of non-tariff barriers are quota system.B. The impact of a quota on price is much harder to predict.C. The effects of quota on price are certain with goods which are also produced domestically.D. A revenue tariff will always provide some protection.Cloze.Latin American stocks fell for a second day on Friday in reaction to Asia’s currency and stock market crash. Fill each gap with the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D, and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single linethrough the center.Insurance is a device that has been developed to handle risks. Nearly everyone 31 risk of some sort. The houseowner, for example, knows that his property can be damaged by fire; the shipowner knows that his vessel may be lost at sea; the breadwinner knows that he may die 32 and leave his family the poorer. On the other hand, not every house is damaged by fire, not every vessel lost at sea. If these persons each put a small 33 into a pool, there will be enough to meet the needs of 34 who do suffer loss. In other words, the losses of the few are met from the contributions of the many. This is the basis of insurance. Those who pay the contributions are known as the 35 and those who administer the pool of contributions as insurers. The legal basis of all insurance is the policy. It states that in return for the regular payment by the insured of a named sum of money, called the premium, which is usually paid every year, the insurer will pay a sum of money or 36 for loss, if the risk or event insured against actually happens. The premium for an insurance naturally depends on how likely this is to happen, as suggested by past experience. It also plans to invest a total of some 650 million euros (US$781.62 million) in China from last year to 2007. By 2004, Bosch had invested about 550 million euros (US$661.37 million) in the establishment and expansion of its Chinese activities.Under the recruitment plan, Bosch will increase the number of its employees on the Chinese mainland from the present 14,000 to 18,000 by 2007. “Over the next two years, we shall be hiring not less than 1,000 additional associates in our Diesel Systems division, 2,200 in Power Tools, and 600 at Bosch Rexroth. In other words, 170 associates will join our companies in China every month,”said Franz Fehrenbach, chairman of the board of management at Bosch (China) Investment Ltd.To help realize its goal of pursuing sustainable development through talent localization in China, Bosch launched a new graduate management training programme in the country earlier this year. The new programme is designed to build up the future management team of the company in China. Among tens of thousands of applicants, the first group of 44 graduates from Chinese universities has been selected. Beginning this year, they will start a one-year training programme at Bosch’s facilities in China before they are sent to Bosch’s facilities in Germany where they will work for two years on a variety of challenging projects.“As a company committed to the Chinese market and the development of its local industries, Bosch pursues sustainable development in China through the localization of technology and talents,” said Peter Pang, president of Bosch (China) Investment Ltd. “In order to build strong local management, engineering and research teams in China, Bosch is committed to train and to develop Chinese students and professionals.”“In the long term, growth in China can only succeed with highly qualified and motivated staff from within China itself,”said Fehrenbach. The graduate management training programme is the newest initiative under Bosch’s International Development Programme (IDP) in China. Bosch said it regards its 250,000 employees around the world as the most important asset of the company. In addition to the education of graduates, IDP has, over the past few years, helped to train many talented young Chinese professionals who already have two to three years of work experience. They were sent to Germany for a two-year programme soon after they were recruited by Bosch in China. For current employees, short-term foreign assignment opportunities are widely available. Bosch Automotive Diesel Systems, one of Bosch’s business units, has sent more than 80 Chinese employees to Germany for training since it was established in Wuxi in 2004.A global manufacturer of automotive and industrial technology, consumer goods, and buildingtechnology, Bosch founded its first trading office in China in 1909. In 1926, the first car service workshop opened in Shanghai. Today, all of the Bosch business sectors are present in China. The company operates via a holding company in Shanghai, 13 subsidiaries, six joint ventures, and six trading companies.51.What’s the possible title of the passage?A. Bosch’s Investment in ChinaB. It can be inferred that __________.A. Bosch is facing an intense competition in ChinaB. most current employees of Bosch come from GermanyC. the headquarters of Bosch is located in ShanghaiD. Bosch puts much importance on employee trainingPassage TwoLogistics can be broadly defined as the time-related positioning of resources, ensuring that materials, people, operational capacity and information are in the right place at the right time in the right quantity and at the right quality and cost. It is the planning, organization, control and execution of the flow of goods from purchasing through production and distribution to the final customer in order to satisfy the requirements of the market. In international distribution terms this is the process of warehousing, transporting and distributing goods and cargo and the positioning of containers and/or equipment. It requires, therefore, an integrated and high-quality package of services in which the emphasis is focused on care of the cargo and provision of the most efficient coordination and management of the transport process.Today the world is a single integrated market place in which supply chain efficiency has become a competitive necessity. Manufacturers and retailers have sought cost savings and service improvements to enhance their competitiveness by supplying larger markets with fewer production and distribution centers.European Union is one of the biggest integrated markets in the world. Advances in information technology and the relaxation of customs barriers in Europe have greatly facilitated the emergence of new strategies in trans-European distribution. Gone are the national boundaries as barriers to quick distribution with their customs examination. Today, traders treat the 15 European states as a single market with no trade, distribution, culture or product specification barriers. Consequently, traders are outsourcing their non-core functions and entrusting the pan-European distribution operation to the logistic freight forwarder. This involves the freight forwarder taking over every subsequent function from production line to final delivery and focusing on supply chain management.A further industrial development is the move to product outsourcing and spreading points of manufacture and distribution throughout a variety of countries. Accordingly, the freight forwarder becomes involved in managing the flow of goods, from warehousing, picking and packing to inventory control and product repairs. A global network and heavy investment in information technology is required. Freight forwarders offer added-value services, logistics management and reliable information to their clients. In short the logistic operation involves the process of order acceptance to the stage of end delivery. The logistic freight forwarder focuses on intermodal services and tries to set a cost-and time-effective method of transportation for its customers and a single rate for the through transit. The freight forwarder concentrates on supply chain management and works towards forming partnerships covering parts of the supply chain with its major customers.Overall, the logistically focused freight forwarder provides value added services including inventory control, sorting, assembly, testing, badging, packaging, labelling and bar-coding. The benefits to the shipper include improved cash flow, lower running costs, reduced capital expenditure, released management time and flexibility. Therefore, a successful logistic freight forwarder must be well prepared to adapt to a changing global logistic scene and invest heavily in Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and good quality, trained and committed staff. Undoubtedly, this is the opportunity for the big freight forwarder.56. How do manufacturers and retailers improve their competitiveness?A. By building more production and distribution centers.B. By shortening the supply chain.C. By improving supply chain efficiency.D. By applying new information technology.57. What is NOT involved in logistics?A. W arehousing goods.B. Transporting goods.C. Managing capital investment.D. Positioning of containers and equipment.58. Traders in European Union can entrust the pan-European distribution operation to the logistic freightforwarder because ___________.A. the national boundaries in European Union have been removedB. information technology becomes well developed and customs barriers are relaxed thereC. traders have good relationship with their freight forwarders in other European countriesD. traders want to improve the efficiency in their business operation59. The logistic freight forwarder ___________.A. tries to make transportation cost-and-time effectiveB. provides value-added services and saves the value-added taxC. takes part in manufacturing of the goodsD. invests a lot in EDI with the clients60. In what way can the freight forwarder help the shipper?A. Lowering running cost.B. Reducing management staff.C. Decreasing cash flow.D. Attracting capital investment.Part III TRANSLATING & WRITING (40 minutes) Section ADirections: Translate the following passage into Chinese and write the Chinese version on the Answer Sheet.61.
