For each question there are four choices marked A, B,C and D. Chose the best answer to each question.Passage OneEverybody knows that the favorite food in the United States is the hamburger. It seems impossible, but people eat 34,000,000,000 hamburgers a year. This is enough to make a line of hamburgers around the world four times. The favorite place to buy a hamburger is a fast-food restaurant. In these restaurants, people order their food, wait just a few minutes and carry it to their tables themselves. They can eat it in the restaurant or take the food out and eat it at home,at work,or in a park. At some restaurants people can drive up beside a window. They order the food, and a worker hands it to them through the window. Then they eat in their car. Hamburgers are not the only kind of food that fast-food restaurants serve. Some serve fish, chicken, beef, sandwiches,or Mexican food. They also serve fries (French fried potatoes),shakes (a drink made from milk and ice cream),soft drinks, and coffee. Fast-food restaurants are very popular because the service is fast and the food is inexpensive. For many people, this is more important than the quality of the food. These restaurants are also popular because the food is always the same. People know that if they eat at a company's restaurant in the north or south of the city, the food will be the same,if they eat in New York or San Francisco,it will still be the same.11. According to the passage, what food do Americans like best?A. Beef.B. Sandwiches.C. Hamburger.D. Fries.12. Where can Americans eat a hamburger?A. At home.B. In a park.C. In their car.D. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Fast-food restaurants are very popular.B. People in the US eat enough hamburgers to make a line around the world.C. Some people eat fast food in parks.D. People can eat fast food at work or in a park.Passage TwoGoing to court can be frightening, especially if you area child. You may have to stand up in the witness box,and swear to tell the truth and answer questions in front of a crowd of adults. It would be even more frightening if you were the victim of a crime and you had to sit in the same courtroom as the person accused of attacking you,for instance. So the law in Britain has made it easier for children to act as witnesses. Children are allowed to tell what they know, from another room in the same courthouse,in this way they do not have to face all those people in the courtroom. It works on a closed-circuit (闭路的)television link, which means that the TV only operates inside the court. The child witness sits in a room with a social worker in front of a TV camera. Everyone in the court room can see the child on a TV screen, but the child can only see the judge and the lawyers who will ask him or her questions. The system has been so successful that it will be extended to more courts this year.Another way to make it easy for a child to act a witness is to set up a screen in the court room around the witness box so that the child cannot see the defendant (被告). Information given by children can be very important to a court trial,butbefore1988 the law did not really recognize that children told the truth. It stated that anything a child said in court had to be supported by other evidence in the case.A-10-416. A child witness,if he were the victim of the crime, would be frightened most by________. A. all the questions he had to answerB. the crowd of adults he had to faceC. the judge and the lawyersD. the person accused of attacking him17. (阅读理解题)The comfort zone is our living, work, and social environments that we have grown accustomed to. It determines the type of friends we make or people we associate with. It determines a life style we accept or reject.Young people are very adaptable; they can adjust to changing comfort zones with ease. They can socialize with homeless people in the morning and be equally at ease at a formal banquet in the evening. As we age, the ability to adapt towide-ranging comfort zones becomes more difficult. Social prejudice narrows the comfort zone range. The comfort zone can be a decision making tool.Comfort zones are directly related to our dreams or goals, which is associated with self-fulfilling prophecy(预言). In order to grow and change, we must first be discontent with our current comfort zone. We must realize that all meaningful and lasting changes occur first in daydreaming and then they work their way into reality. The more clearly and vividly we fantasize our dream, the stronger and more real the pictures on the subconscious level will become. Once our subconscious accepts thisimage and its expectation, it will go to work, searching for a way to bring it into reality. If we feel that these things are too good for us, we will find ways to fail. If, however, we intentionally imagine the change we want, build an expectation of the change mentally and emotionally, and we will find ways to acquire dream and, when mentally ready, it will arrive faster than we ever thought possible. For some people, problems, suffering, poverty, bad breaks are their comfort zone. They find comfort in finding fault and complaining about their misfortune. The same is true for businesses. Management and workers have grown used to seeing things go wrong and expect them too. Management finds comfort in finding fault with workers and workers and vice versa.Note: If the comfort zone we are seeking is beyond our current income, then, we need to develop a service that has greater value than our current one. Money, power and influence are not goals; they are rewards ONLY for personal achievement.(1). (单选题) As one grows older, ______. Doctors oftenwork together in groups, and the name of the place where they work is a Doctor's Surgery. The governmentpays for this system, and it is free to go to see your doctor. (阅读理解题)Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes? It is obvious that such uncomfortable feeling must negatively affect people. A person’s conception of himself o r herself is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing.” Shy people are very sensitive to criticism: they feel it confirms their feelings of inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one: “You’re just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true.” It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in buildingself-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with a lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weakness as well as their strengths. Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual, interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. Let’s not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.(1). For each question there are four choices marked A,B,C and D. Then they eat in their car.Hamburgers are not the only kind of food that fast-food restaurants serve. Some serve fish, chicken, beef, sandwiches,or Mexican food. They also serve fries (French fried potatoes),shakes (a drink made from milk and ice cream),soft drinks, and coffee.Fast-food restaurants are very popular because the service is fast and the food is inexpensive. For many people, this is more important than the quality of the food. These restaurants are also popular because the food is always the same. People know that if they eat at a company's restaurant in the north or south of the city, the food will be the same,if they eat in New York or San Francisco, it will still be the same.11. According to the passage, what food do Americans like best?A. Beef.B. Sandwiches.C. Hamburger.D. Fries.12. Where can Americans eat a hamburger?A. At home.B. In a park.C. In their car.D. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Fast-food restaurants are very popular.B. People in the US eat enough hamburgers to make a line ar ound the world.C. The system has been so successful that it will be extended to more courts this year.Another way to make it easy for a child to act a witness is to set up a screen in the court room around the witness box so that the child cannot see the defendant (被告).Information given by children can be very important to a court trial,butbefore1988 the law did not really recognize that children told the truth. It stated that anything a child said in court had to be supported by other evidence in the case.16. A child witness,if he were the victim of the crime, would be frightened most by________. A. all the questions he had to answerB. the crowd of adults he had to faceC. the judge and the lawyersD. the person accused of attacking him17. The most important point of the new system that made thi ngs easier for a child witness is that____.A. he does not see the defendantB. he speaks in front of a TV cameraC. he is in another room in the same courthouseD. everyone in the courtroom can see the child18.What does the author think of the new system according to the third paragraph?A. Not very good.B. Very successful.C. Just an experiment.D. Hardly acceptable.19, Has the law always recognized the importance of children's information in court?A. No.B. Yes.C. Not until 1988.D. Before 1988,yes.20. The word “case”in the last paragraph means________.A. a particular situationB. a particular incidentC. a trialD. a boxPassage ThreeAlbeit Einstein had a great effect on science and history, greater than only a few other men have achieved. An American university president oncecommented that Einstein had created a new outlook, a new view of the universe. It may be some time before the average mind understands fully the identity of time and space and so on —but even ordinary man understands now that the universe is something larger than ever thought before.By 1914 the young Einstein had gained world fame. He accepted the offer to become a professor at the Prussian Academy of Science in Berlin. He had few duties, little teaching and unlimited opportunities for study, but soon his peace and quiet were broken by the First World War.Einstein hated violence. The misery of war affected him deeply, and he sat unhappily in his office doing little. He lost interest in his research. Only when peace came in 1918 was he able to get back to work.In the years following World War I honors were increasingly given to him. He became the headOf the Kaiser Whihem Institute on Theoretical Physics. (阅读理解)Successful and happy distance learners have a few characteristics in common. Compare yourself to the following list to determine whether or not online classes are a good fit for your personality and habits. 1. Successful distance learners do just as well, if not better, without people looking over their shoulder. While some people need teachers to keep them motivated and on-task, distance learners are able to motivate themselves. They realize that they will never be face-to-face with the people who give them assignments and grade their work, but they don’t need others to encourage them. The most successful students are self-motivated and set their own goals. 2. Successful distance learners never (or at least rarely) put off their assignments or wait until the last moment to write their papers. These students enjoy the freedom of working at their own pace and appreciate the ability to complete their work in as much time as it takes them, instead of waiting for an entire class. However, they understand that putting off their work too often can end up adding months, if not years, to their studies. 3. Successful distance learners have good reading comprehension skills. While most people learn by listening to lectures and taking notes, the majority of distance learners are expected to master material through reading alone. Although some distance learning courses offer video recordings and audio clips, most programs require that students understand a large amount of information that is only available through written text. These students are able to comprehend texts at the college level without the direct guidance of a teacher. 4. Successful distance learners can resist constant distractions. Whether it’s the phone ringing off the hook, the kids screaming in the kitchen, or the temptation of TV programs, everyone faces distractions. Successful students know how to filter out the constant disturbances that threaten their progress. They feel comfortable turning down an invitation or letting the machine pick up the phone when they know there is work to be done. (本题10分)1. (单项选择)Which of the following is NOT included in the successful distance learners’ characteristics? (本题2分)A. Being self-motivated.B. Being self-disciplined.C. Being with good reading comprehension skills.D. Being easy to distract attention.答案: D解析: 无2. (单项选择)If putting off his work too often, what will happen to this student? (本题2分)A. (阅读理解)If you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise-and as a result, we are ageing unnecessarily soon. Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why otherwise healthy farmers in northern Japanappeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a relatively early age, and how the process of ageing could be slowed down. With a team of colleagues at Tokyo National University, he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and varying occupations. Computer technology enabled the researchers to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front and side sections of the brain, which relate to intellect and emotion, and determine the human character. (The rear section of the brain, which controls functions like eating and breathing, does not contract with age, and one can continue living without intellectual or emotional faculties.) Contraction of front and side parts was observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty-and-seventy-year-olds. Matsuzawa concluded from his tests that there is a simple remedy to the contraction normally associated with age-using the head. The findings show in general terms that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. Those least at risk, says Matsuzawa, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White collar workers doing routine work in government offices are, however, as likely to have shrinking brains as the farm worker, bus driver and shop assistant. Matsuzawa’s findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking. Blood must circulate properly in the head to supply the fresh oxygen th e brain cells need. “The best way to maintain good blood circulation is through using the brain,” he says. “Think hard and engage in conversation. Don’t rely on pocket calculators.” (本题10分)1. (单项选择)The team of doctors wanted to find out __________. Not long ago an unseasonable frost swept through coffee plantations there. The result affected people in many countries for a long time to come.At first, reports of serious damage were received. These led to a sharp rise in the price of coffee, which had not been a highly profitable crop. Growers in other countries made extra efforts to increase their exports to profit from the expected shortage. However, they were hampered by smugglers who wished to avoid government controls. The price of coffee fell slightly. Then large restaurants and hotels began to buy coffee to build up stocks for future use. The price rose sharply and public resistance developed. Housewives organized a boycott of coffee. This led to a rise in the price of tea and a fall in the price of coffee. Much to the dismay of growers, the price fell sharply. Their response was rather surprising. Instead of selling their stocks of coffee, they began to buy on the open market. Their motive was clear. They wanted to force the price of coffee up, and one way of doing this was to reduce the amount of coffee available for sale to the public.Luckily for coffee-drinkers, this move failed. Restaurants and hotels stopped buying coffee. Large numbers of small growers had to sell their crops to keep alive. The large growers found that they were buying more coffee than theywere growing. There are few thing that men do or want to do, possess or want to possess, that have not, in addition to their mechanical or biological value, a symbolic value. All fashionable clothes are highly symbolic: materials, cut, and ornament are dictated only to a slight degree by considerations of warmth, comfort or practicability. The more we dress up in fine clothes, the more we restrict our freedom of action.Food is also highly symbolic. Specific foods are used to symbolize specific festivals. For example, moon cakes are eaten to celebrate the Chinese mid-autumn festival as the Chinese think that on the Mid-Autumn Day (August 15th of the lunar year), the moon is at its brightest. We select our furniture to serve as visible symbols of our taste, wealth, and social position. We trade in perfectly good cars for later models not always to get better transportation, but to give evidence to the community that we can afford it.I once had an eight-year-old car in good running condition.A friend of mine, a repairman who knew the condition of the car, kept urging me to trade it for a new model. “But why?”I asked, “The old car’s in fine shape still.” The repairman answered scornfully, “Yeah, but what the hell. All you’ve got is transportation.”Recently, the term “transportation car” has begun to appear in advertisements, for example, “4B Dodge----Runs perfectly well: transportation car. Leaving, must sell. $100”. Apparently it means a car that has no symbolic value and is good only for getting you there and bringing you back----a poor kind of vehicle indeed!(10分)21). According to the passage, people dress themselves in fashionable clothes chiefly to _____(2分)(A) comfort and warm themselves(B) display their well-developed figures(C) restrict their freedom of action(D) show that they are rich enough to buy them参考答案:D22). Nowadays people often sell their old cars in good running condition and buy new ones _____(2分)(A) just to hold more people(B) because they want to celebrate specific festivals(C) just to show their wealth(D) because they are moving to a new place参考答案:C23). The term “transportation car” we now often come across in advertisements refers to a car which _____(2分)(A) is made by a transport company(B) transports goods only(C) has only practical value(D) is transported by other vehicles参考答案:C24). According to the writer, people eat specific food at specific time simply to ____(2分)(A) show their high social position(B) keep themselves healthy(C) celebrate a certain traditional occasion(D) prove that they are wealthy参考答案:C25). In the last paragraph of the passage, “Leaving, must sell.” Means that ______(2分)(A) the advertiser is on his way to the market for selling his car(B) the car has not any symbolic value at all(C) the car is ready to leave and has to be sold(D) the owner is going to leave the place so he has to sell the car参考答案:DIn the past twenty years, there has been an increasing tendency for workers to move from one country to another. While some newly independent countries have understandably restricted most jobs to local people, other countries have attracted and welcomed migrant workers. This is particularly the case in the Middle East, where increased oil incomes have enabled many countries to call in outsiders to improve local facilities. Thus the Middle East has attracted oil-workers from the U.S.A. and Europe. It has brought in construction workers and technicians from many countries, including South Korea and Japan. In view of the difficult living and working conditions in the Middle East, it is not surprising that the pay is high to attract suitable workers. Many engineers and technicians can earn at least twice as much money in the Middle East as they can in their own country, and this is a major attraction. An allied benefit is the low taxationor complete lack of it. This increases the net amount of pay received by visiting workers and is very popular with them.Sometimes a disadvantage has a compensating advantage. For example, the difficult living conditions often lead to increased friendship when workers have to depend on each other for safety and comfort. In a similar way, many migrant workers can save large sums of money partly because of the lack of entertainment facilities. The work is often complex and full of problems but this merely presents an increased challenge to engineers who prefer to find solutions to the problems rather than do routine work in their own country. One major problem which affects migrant workers in the Middle East is that their jobs are temporary ones. They are nearly always on contract, so it is not easy for them to plan ahead with great confidence. This is to be expected, since no country welcomes a large number of foreign workers as permanent residents. In any case, migrant workers accept this disadvantage, along with others, because of the considerable financial benefits which they receive.(10分)26). The countries in the Middle East have welcomed migrant workers because_______.(2分)(A) t hey can’t find enough hands in their own countries(B) they can save money by employing migrant workers(C) they want the migrant workers to help to improve their facilities(D) they can increase their incomes by employing migrant workers参考答案:C27). 五、阅读理解、完形填空题(共5道小题)41.Online degree programs have come a long way since their early days. Traditional colleges an d universities have developed distance learning programs to accommodate individuals who would not otherwise have the time or funds to earn an advanced degree. Online programs require the same amount of study and work as a classroom program. If you are under the impression that c ourses offered online will be a walk in the park, think again! Online degree programs are often more difficult than traditional university programs due to the fact the work and study is left up to the student. Time management skills are crucial, since there is not a particular time of the day set aside specifically for study. It may take some time to become accustomed to this method of scholarship, but the pros of online classes may outweigh the cons in your situation. The main difference between online degree programs and traditional higher education is the l ocation of learning. Instead of being confined to a stuffy classroom filled with students, these onli ne classes have a more personal feeling. While many students would be hesitant to speak one t o one with a class instructor, online programs find their students more willing to contact their pro fessors via e-mail. This great participation encourages better understanding of the course materia l. Of course, not attending a class also comes with additional barriers. A student must be equipp ed with time management skills in order to succeed in an online class. Students that lack the pr oper time management skills may find themselves overwhelmed with course work at the end of t he semester or falling behind in their studies.Whether you choose to attend a traditional college or university or enroll in an online higher education program, the chances of success are equal. In the end, it is up to you in order to co mplete the course of study and earn your degree. The book The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin is probably one of the most famous books ever written by a scientist. Yet it is a book which the writer did not want to publish; he only agreed to make his theory known to the public when he was forced to by his friends. In 1831, the British Government sent a ship called Beagle to South America to make maps of the coast. At that time, Darwin w as a young man in his twenties who had studied science in Edinburgh and Cambridge. Through a friend, he was offered the job of studying the plants and animals of the different countries that the Beagle was to visit. Darwin’s father told him not to go, an d the captain of the Beagle said that he did not like the shape of Darwin’s nose; but that did not stop him, and in December of that year, Darwin sailed for South America. He spent five years on the ship, collecting many samples and writing down his obs ervations about the living things he found. When he returned to England, he tried to work out a theory to explain what he had observed. It was clear that many species w ere connected with each other in some way, without being exactly the same. Why was this? Two years after his return, he deve loped a theory: only the strongest or the cleverest could survive difficult conditions. Over time, the species changes slowly to fi t the environment. Different environments produce different species.(17.5分)

Among them, tourist industry is one of the biggest industries of this kin d. Providing transportation and accommodations for tourists — and guides, brochures, souvenirs — is one of the major industri es in many countries. Since people are now having longer vacations and are more and more interested in seeing other parts of the world, this business will no doubt continue to grow.Another industry obviously devoted to leisure is entertainment. Movies, TV shows, concerts and plays are usually intended for our leisure. The same can be said of most books, except textbooks. Professional sports make money because people pay to wa tch them in their free time. This list could be greatly extended. But even among these industries, we have mentioned only part of the picture. The initiative highlights the cost of chronic diseases一the leading causes of death in the United States——and outlines ways that people Can prevent them, including better diet and increased exercise.“In the United States today,7 of 10 deaths and the vast majority of serious illness, disability and health care costs are caused by chronic diseases,"the Health and Human Services Department said in a statement. The causes are often behavioral——smoking, poor eating habits and a lack of exercise.“I am convinced that preventing disease by promoting better health is a smart policy choice for our future,”Thom pson told a conference held to launch the initiatiative. “Our current health care system is not structured to deal with the escala ting costs of treating diseases that are largely preventable through changes in our lifestyle choices." But there are also arguments against such a strong conclusion. F irstly, anthropologists point out that the insulated love affair between children and parents;found in modem societies does no t usually exist in traditional societies. For example,in some tribal societies, such as the Ngoni, the father and mother of a ch ild did not rear their infant alone—far from it'.Secondly, common sense tells US that day care would not be so widespread to day if parents care-takers found children had problems with it.Statistical studies of this kind have not yet been carried out,a nd even if they were, the results would be certain to be complicated and controversial.Thirdly.in the last decade there have been a number of careful American studies of children in day care, and they have uniformly reported that day care had a neur al or slightly positive effect on children’s development. But tests that have had to be used to measure this development are no t widely enough accepted to settle the issue. But Bowlby’s analysis raises the possibility that early day care has delayed effects. The possibility that such care might lead t o,say, more mental illness or crime 15 or 20 years later can only be explored by the use of statistics.Whatever the long—te rm effects, parents sometimes find the immediate effects difficult to deal with。

(阅读理解题)How do you acquire confidence? Speak English with friends first because with them you can speak freely without feeling shy. Then try your ability with your teachers and with foreigners if you have an opportunity to meet them. Don’t be afraid of mistakes. Nobody is above mistakes; and don’t be afraid to ask questions about things you don’t know. This is the way to acquire knowledge. Not until you begin to think in English rather than Chinese can you be said to know the language. This is not a superhuman achievement—only a question of practice. Thinking in English will help you to truly understand how the language is spoken. Read novels to build vocabulary, thus gaining confidence. Start with small volumes of 30 to 40 pages. Write down any new word you discover and look it up in your dictionary. Learn how to use the new word by making sentences with it. Bring the word to your teacher to have it explained more fully. Don’t be angry when you learn a new word today and forget it tomorrow. To forget is a natural process; to remember is unnatural and requires effort. Of 10 new words learnt in a day, only two or three will remain in the memory. The others you will forget and have to relearn. When learning them for the second time, they will come more easily, and this time you probably will remember nearly all of them. A small minority, however, may elude you again, and have to be learnt for a third time. Constant repetition is necessary.(1). (阅读理解题)The other day I asked a group of my students how they like to learn English. The first person to speak up was Max. This was no surprise—unlike many Hong Kong students, Max has never been reluctant to speak. “I like to learn by speaking,” said Max. “I specially love to speak to native English speakers when I can find them. I try to talk to my friends in English, too. Um, what else? I like to watch TV and movies in English, and I like to learn new words by hearing them.”“How about you?” I asked Veronica. “Do you like to learn in these ways?”“Oh, no,” she said, “I could never learn like that. I need to have a textbook, and I like the teacher to explain everything to me. I have a notebook, and I write everything down. I like to study grammar, and I like to learn by reading. Max says he likes to learn new words by hearing them. I like to learn new words by seeing.”Veronica’s classmate Jackie was more similar to Max. She said she liked to learn by watching movies and videos. She also liked playing games, listening to cassettes, talking in pairs and practicing English outside the classroom. The last person to give his opinion was Joseph. Like Veronica, he liked to study grammar, although he didn’t feel the same need to have a teacher. He liked to learn independently to find his own mistakes, and to read books and newspapers. These four people correspond to four learner “types” that a former colleague of mine, Ken Willing, found in a study he did some years ago. Max can be classified as a “communicative” learner, Veronica as “authority-oriented”, Jackie as a “concrete” learner, and Joseph as an “analytical” one.(1). (阅读理解题)Most of us compare ourselves with anyone we think is happier –a relative, an acquaintance or, often someone we barely know. I once met a young man who struck me as particularly successful and happy. He spoke of his love for his beautiful wife and their three daughters, and of his joy at being a radio talk show host in a city he loved.I remember thinking that he was one of those lucky few for whom everything goes effortlessly right. Then we started talking about the Internet. He blessed its existence, he told me, because he could look up information on multiple sclerosis – the terrible disease afflicting his wife.I felt like a fool for assuming nothing unhappy existed in his life. One effective way of destroying happiness is to look at something and focus on even the smallest flaw. It’s like looking at the tiled ceiling and concentrating on the space where one tile is missing. As a bald man toldme, “Whenever I enter a room, all I see is hair.” Once you’ve determined what your missing tile is, explore whether acquiring it will really make you happy. Then do one of the three things: get it, replace it with a different tile, or forget about it and focus on the tiles in your life that are not missing. We all know people who have had a relatively easy life yet are essentially unhappy. And we know people who have suffered a great deal but generally remain happy. The first secret is gratitude. All happy people are grateful. Ungrateful people cannot be happy. The second secret is realizing that happiness is a byproduct of something else. The most obvious sources are those pursuits that give our lives purpose. Finally, we need a spiritual faith, or a philosophy of life. If you choose to find the positive in virtually every situation, you will be blessed, and if you choose to find the awful, you will be cursed.(1). (阅读理解题)The World Trade Organization (WTO), founded on January 1, 1995, aims to encourage international trade to flow as freely as possible, making sure that trade agreements are respected and that any disputes can be settled. In the five years since its founding, the WTO has become well known as one of the world's most powerful economic organizations, taking its place alongside the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (国际货币基金组织).The system of global rules for international trade, however, dates back half a century to 1948 when the General Agreement on Tariffs (关税) and Trade (GATT) was formed after World War II.As time went by, it became clear that the GATT had two major drawbacks—the limited areas of trade it covered, and the lack of an effective system to settle disputes. After seven years of trade talks ending in 1994, the so-called Uruguay Round (乌拉圭回合谈判) finally gave birth to the WTO, complete with an effective system to settle disputes and to form new rules covering trade in services and intellectual property.Even after seven years of talks and with 22,500 pages of agreements reached problems remained, especially in the difficult-to-deal-with areas of agriculture and services.(1). (阅读理解题)Many people think that when they become rich and successful, happiness will naturally follow. Let me tell you that nothing is further from the truth. The world is full of very rich people who are as miserable as if they were living in hell. We have read stories about movie stars who committed suicide or died from drugs. Quite clearly, money is not the only answer to all problems. Wealth obtained through dishonest means does not bring happiness. Lottery winnings do not bring happiness. Gambling winnings do not bring happiness. To my mind, the secret to happiness lies in your successful work, in your contributiontowards others’ happiness and in your wealth you have earned through your own honest effort. If you obtain wealth through luck or dishonest means, you will know that it is ill-earned money. If you get your money by taking advantage of others or by hurting others, you will not be happy with it. You will think you are a base person. Long-term happiness is based on honesty, productive work, contribution, and self-esteem. Happiness is not an end; it is a process. It is a continuous process of honest, productive work which makes a real contribution to others and makes you feel you are a useful, worthy person. As Dr. Wayne wrote, “There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way.” There is no use saying “Someday when I achieve these goals, when I get a car, build a house and own my own business, then I will be really happy.” Life just does not work that way. If you wait for certain things to happen and depend on external circumstances of life to make you happy, you will always feel unfulfilled. There will always be something missing.(1). (单选题) What does “nothing is further from the truth”mean?(本题2.0分)A、Something. is completely untrue.B、Something is completely true.C、We can find out the truth.D、We cannot find out the truth.标准答案:A(2). (阅读理解题)Advertisements make us want too much, so we get the idea that the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. But it is not completely right. Advertisement has another equally important function —to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods derives largely from the advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about. Supposing you wanted to buy a washer, it is more than likely you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc., from an advertisement. Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements, but this claim may be seriously doubted. It is hardly possible not to read advertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too! Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway byelaws while waiting for a train? Would you like to read only closely printed columns of news in your daily paper? A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a difference to a drab wall or anewspaper full of bad news. We must not forget that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. Newspapers, commercial radio and television companies could not subsist without this source of revenue. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programs is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers. Two years later, Celine was winning contests, recording singles, working with Rene Angelil and had become a star in Quebec. Her only obstacle for success beyond Canada and France was her French lyrics. By the late ’80s, Celine had learned English and signed a deal with Sony Records. In 1990, her first LP in English was released. Celine had her first U.S. Top 10 hit with ‘Where Does My Heart Beat Now?’ and also hit big with ‘(If The re Was) Any Other Way’. In 1992, Celine released ‘Celine Dion’ and hit the Top 10 with a duet with Peabo Bryson, called ‘Beauty and the Beast’. The song also won a Grammy Award in 1993 for Best Pop Performance. Additional hits from the LP included ‘Love Can Move Mountains’ and ‘If You Asked Me To’ In 1993, after touring with Michael Bolton, Celine released Colour Of My Love which contained the hit ‘When I Fall in Love’ (with Clive Griffin) from the film Sleepless In Seattle. The LP went on to become Cel ine’s first multi-million selling LP in the U.S. (selling over 4 million copies). Additional hits from the LP included the Number 1 hit ‘The Power of Love’ and ‘Misled’. Celine’s biggest success to date came in1995 with the release of ‘Falling Into You’.Celine topped the ARC Weekly Top 40 with three hits: ‘Because You Loved Me’, ‘It’s All Coming Back to Me Now’ and ‘All by Myself’. The LP also hit Number 1 and sold over 9 million copies in the U.S. (over 25 million worldwide). In 1997, Celine received awards at the Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and Best Pop Album. (阅读理解)It is a wise father that knows his own child, but today a man can boost his paternal (fatherly) wisdom ― or at least confirm that he’s the kid’s dad. All he needs to do is shell out $30 for paternity(父亲的身份) testing ki t(PTK) at his local drugstore ― and another $120 to get the results.More than 60,000 people have purchased the PTKs since they first become available without prescriptions(处方)last years, according to Doug Fogg, chief operating officer of Identigene, which makes the over-the-counter kits. More than two dozen companies sell DNA tests directly to the public, ranging in price from a few hundred dollars to more than $2500.Among the most popular: paternity and kinship testing, which adopted children can use to find their biological relatives and families can use to track down kids put up for adoption. DNA testing is also the latest rage among passionate genealogists(系谱专家)― and supports businesses that offer to search for a family’s geographic roots. Most tests require collecting cells by swabbing saliva (唾液)in the moth and sending it to the company for testing. All tests require a potential candidate with whom to compare DNA.But some observers are skeptical, “There is a kind of false precision being hawked by p eople claiming they are doing ancestry(系谱) testing,” says Trey Duster, a New York University sociologist. He notes that each individual has many ancestors-numbering in the hundreds just a few centuries back. Yet most ancestry testing only considers a single lineage, either the Y chromosome(染色体) inherited through men in a father’s line or mitochondrial DNA, which a passed down only from mothers. This DNA can reveal genetic information about only one or two ancestors, even though, for example, just three generations back people also have six other great-grandparents or, four generations back, 14 other great-great-grandparents.Critics also argue that commercial genetic testing is only as good as the reference collections tothat a DNA database may differ depending on the company that processes the results. In addition, the computer programs a company uses to estimate relationships may be patented and not subject to peer review or outside evaluation.(1). (阅读理解)Our risk of cancer rises dramatically as we age. So it makes sense that the elderly should be routinely screened for new tumors — or doesn’t it?While such vigilant(警觉的)tracking of cancer is a good thing in general, researchers are increasingly questioning whether all of this testing is necessary for the elderly. With the percentage of people over age 65 expected to nearly double by 2050, it’s important to weigh the health benefits of screening against the risks and costs of routine testing. In many cases, screening can lead to additional biopsies and surgeries to remove cancer, which can cause side effects, while the cancers themselves may be slow-growing and may not pose serious health problems in patients’ remaining years. But the message that everyone must screen for cancer has become so ingrained that when health care experts recommended that women under 50 and over 74 stop screening for breast cancer, it caused a riotous reaction among doctors, patients and advocacy groups. It’s hard to uproot deeply held beliefs about cancer screening with scientific data. Certainly, there are people over age 75 who have had cancers detected by routine screening, and gained several extra years of life because of treatment. And clearly, people over age 75 who have other risk factors for cancer, such as a family history or prior personal experience with the disease, should continue to get screened regularly. But for the remainder, the risk of cancer, while increased at the end of life, must be balanced with other factors like remaining life expectancy(预期寿命).A recent study suggests that doctors start to make more objective decisions about who will truly benefit from screening- especially considering the explosion of the elderly that will soon swell our population. It’s not an easy calculation to make, but one that make sense for the whole patient. Dr. Otis Brawley said, “Many doctors are ordering these tests purely to cover themselves. We need to think about the rational use of health care and stop talking about the rationing of health care.” That means making some difficult decisions with elderly patients, and going against the misguided belief that when it comes to health care, more is always better.(1).
