Spreading HappinessJessica Martin and Asherah Weiss are art teachers in a primary school. They thought their students might have the magic words that could bring calm to people in difficult times, so they created a project called “Pep Toc” with their students. The project had two parts—one was setting up a hotline, and the other was making encouraging posters. The two teachers had the same basic question for all the students: “What could you say to help or encourage someone else?”Students working on the hotline thought of what they would like to say. Then Ms. Martin recorded each one, and sorted out(分类)the recordings into different parts of the telephone hotline. When people call the hotline, they can hear happy voices of children of different ages sharing positive(积极的)messages. For example, pressing 1 brings ideas for people who are “feeling mad or nervous”. Helpful suggestions include: “listen to music”, or “go and get a cookie”. Pressing 2 results in “words of encouragement and life advice”. This includes messages like: “The world is a better place with you in it.” and “You are okay!” By pressing 3, you can hear a group of children saying together: “You can do it! Keep trying, don’t give up!”Other students made encouraging posters and hung them up around the town. Many posters had strips of paper. When people passed by, they could tear off(撕掉)the strips and take with them. For example, one poster said “If you are mad, think of positive thoughts, and had strips reminding people to “Be happy”.Ms. Martin thought the project would only attract interest from people near the school. But in its first six weeks, the hotline got 5 million calls from around the world. It has become very popular with stressed adults, patients in hospitals, and others who just want to hear the happy voices of children. For Martin and Weiss, the project shows students that small acts can have a big influence. “If you have an idea, just try to do it and see what happens,” Weiss says. Students now know that they have amazing power. They’re already thinking about new messages to record for the Pep Toc Hotline.1.Who created the project “Pep Toc”?_________________________________2.What are the two parts of the project?_________________________________3.How did Ms. Martin and the students set up the hotline?_________________________________4.What could people do when they passed by the posters?_________________________________5.What is the last paragraph mainly about?_________________________________阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

With the development of the television and the Internet, many people have changed their hobbies and the way they enjoy their spare time. ①Because of the television and the Internet, many people spend less time reading. The aim of this article is to give reasons why people should read just for pleasure. The reasons that I give you are quite simple: to improve your knowledge, to have more fun, to make your imagination fly, to find new ways to express your ideas, and to have a better understanding of life.Firstly, you can improve your knowledge when you read. There are all kinds of good books to choose from. People who read more usually have a better idea at life than those who do not read often.Secondly, you can have fun and increase your imagination by reading books. Children have very good imagination, so parents need to read lots of stories that feed their imagination. Adults should try to develop their imagination by reading books that make them think amazing things. Finally, no matter how old you are, it can help you have a better understanding of life and express your ideas to others in a simple and correct way.①所以我建议你多读。

I have too much stuff. My bedroom is often very messy. I have many books I never read and CDs I don’t listen to. My drawers are full of clothes I never wear. I was getting disappointed because I never had any space in my bedroom. Then I read about minimalism(极简主义). Minimalism is a style of living where you only keep the most important items and you keep off everything else. After reading about minimalism, I felt encouraged to solve my problem.Minimalism advises that you only keep the necessaries for living, so I started clearing out the things I didn’t use. I collected bags of clothes to give to charities. I sold some of my CDs and books online. After a while of clearing, it became quite exciting to get things out of my room and create some fresh space. They say that a clear, organized bedroom means you will have a clear and organized mind! The main idea behind minimalism is to reduce what you own, and by doing this you can really appreciate the things you have. It’s not easy to live this lifestyle. We are often told that it is better to have more things. Advertisements try to convince(使确信) us that we will only be happy by spending more money buying more stuff.Of course, I’m not a perfect minimalist — I’ve only just started. I still own a lot of things which I don’t really need, but I think this was a positive (积极的) start to own less stuff. In the future, I will 83 .1.How is the writer’s bedroom?__________________________________________________________________2.What was the writer’s feeling after reading about minimalism?__________________________________________________________________3.Why did the writer start clearing out the things he didn’t use?__________________________________________________________________4.What does the underlined part “by doing this” in Paragraph 4 refer to?__________________________________________________________________5.Are we often told by advertisements to have more things or fewer things?__________________________________________________________________6.What can be filled in the blank in the last paragraph?__________________________________________________________________Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答问题)Once upon a time, a man was lucky to have a loving son. But the young man never had to deal with any problems.“My boy should have some experience of dealing with ill luck,” thought the father, so he sent the son into the forest to bring back some wood. Only an old cart (马车) with two oxen (公牛) was free for the work.“If your cart breaks up in the forest, ‘Necessity’ will teach you what to do,” the man said. The son thought that “Necessity” must be a kind man who lived in the forest and helped people in trouble. The son drove far into the forest and found lots of good trees. He cut down the trees and put the wood onto the cart. When the cart was full, he set off for home. However, as he drove over the rough ground, one of the axles (车轴) broke.“I hope that ‘Necessity’ is nearby,” thought the son. Then he ran all the way through the forest and shouted, “NECESSITY! What useless advice Father gave me!”He went back to the cart and started to repair the axle. When the work was done, he drove home. Finally, he made a fine job of both the repair and collecting good wood. His father was pleased with him, but the boy was quite angry. “I could not find ‘Necessity’ anywhere,” said the son. “He did not teach me anything. My community, located in northern Pudong, has been among the worst affected. In order to stop the spread of the virus, it has carried out rounds of all-inclusive nucleic acid(核酸)testing. As a result, volunteers have been in high demand. I have called this community home for nearly twelve years. With a deep love for it, I decided to help out.My shift began at 6 a.m. on March 16. I was assigned to serve at one of the neighborhoods in the area. There were altogether about 2,500 residents. Neighborhood committee(居委会)workers guided then down group by group to the testing site. Some of the residents had never used the Healthcare Cloud system before. The elderly, in particular, needed help with the registration process. We volunteers showed them how to use the system or registered them for their test using our own smartphones.Everything went smoothly until about 8:30. A few residents told me that the Healthcare Cloud system was not working. I tried to log onto the system myself and found the service was indeed unstable. The line became longer and longer as more and more people ran into the same problem. It was a hot day. Some people quickly lost their patience and tried to cut in line. Some took off their masks in order to chat with one another. I told them to put their masks back on andto maintain a safe distance apart from one another while continuing to help the residents register for their test. Some elderly residents with mobility(活动能力)issues were unable to come themselves tothe testing site. For these residents, the medical workers provided home service. It was difficult for them to climb the stairs as they were wearing thick protective clothing. We worked until 3 p.m. When the medical workers took off their protective clothing, I noticed that their fingers were soaked in sweat(汗水)and had become wrinkled. It broke my heart to know that __________ because of the high demand for nucleic acid testing throughout the city. On some days, they were only able to get two to three hours of sleep. It was a tiring day, but I felt happy that I was able to help out. I sincerely hope that these hard times will soon be behind us.13.Is it a difficult time for Shanghai to fight with a COVID-19 outbreak?_________________________________14.What does “it” in paragraph 1 refer to?_________________________________15.Where did the writer work as a volunteer?_________________________________16.Why did some residents quickly lose their patience and tried to cut in line?_________________________________17.What can be filled in the blanks in paragraph 5?_________________________________18.Besides the things the writer did in the passage, list at least three things you can do to help your community in this COVID-19 outbreak._________________________________Sun Ruifeng, a mother in Beijing, changed some of her plans for her 8-year-old son’s summer vacation. She looked for an English training course, but in the end, she changed it to a swimming training class.“Due to the stricter regulations (规定) on subject-training classes, many parents like me choose sports or other projects for developing interests instead,” Sun said.Sun’s choice is part of the result of the government’s growing efforts to lighten the academic pressure on young students. On July 24 last year, Chinese government introduced a guideline (意见) to ease the burden (负担) of excessive homework and off-campus training for primary and junior high school students. It lists requirements in areas such as reducing the amount and the difficulty of homework and improving the quality of education and after-class services provided by schools. For example, homework for children below the third grade is not allowed, while homework for junior high school students should take no longer than 90 minutes to finish.According to the guideline, training institutions (机构) cannot teach students content that is too advanced for the school curriculum. No training courses can be taught on weekends, national holidays or during winter and summer vacations.According to Global Times, more than 75 percent of Chinese urban children, from Grade 1 to Grade 12, are enrolled in training programs. I have rarely seen so much milk. Well, the damage has already been done. Would you like to get down and play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?”Indeed, he did. After a few minutes, his mother said, “You know, Robert, whenever you make a mess like this, eventually you have to clean it up and restore everything to its proper order.”After they cleaned up the spilled milk, his mother then said, “You know, what we have here is a failed experiment in how to effectively carry a big milk bottle with two hands. Let’s go out in the back yard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can discover a way to carry it without dropping it.”The little boy learned that if he grasped the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it. At that moment he knew he didn’t need to be afraid to make mistake. Instead, he learned that mistake were just good chances for learning something new, which is, after all, what scientific experiments are all about. I didn't pay attention when Kevin went upstairs with a look of hurt on his face.①About 20 minutes later, as I was walking upstairs I heard Kevin crying inside the bathroom.I knocked on the door and asked, “Kevin, do you want a talk?” No answer. I tried again. Still nothing happened.①So, I took a piece of paper from a notepad and wrote, “If you don’t want to talk, we can write notes to each other.” and slipped(滑动) it under the door.①An hour later, I was still sitting outside the bathroom with two piles(堆) of cards in front of me. They are cards from Kevin on which he had put all his unpleasant feelings into words for me. As I read one of Kevin’s notes, I couldn’t help crying. One of Kevin’s notes said, “Nobody in this family cares about me. I am not the youngest, and I am not the oldest, and I am not the smartest. Tommy thinks that I am too weak and Dad wishes he had another Kevin as a kid because he’s better at basketball. And you’re never around to even notice me.”①He was right about my part. Feeling sorry for him, I wrote back, “Kevin, I do love you andI am here for you and you are loved in this family.” He didn’t reply for a while, but I could hear him crying softly. Kevin ran out of paper, so he wrote “Thanks” on a paper cup. I wrote back “For what?” It was returned to me with the reply “Loving me” written on it.①Since then, I have tried my best to care about my family members. The poor animal cried for hours before his owner finally found him. The farmer tried hard to pull him out from the well but failed. He felt very sorry for the donkey but after carefully thinking about the situation, he decided that he would not save the donkey. Since the donkey was too old and it was not worth the trouble of saving. So he invited his neighbours to help him bury(埋葬) the old donkey in the well so that it would make him end his pain.Hearing many people coming to help, the old donkey was excited at first. As they began to scoop the dirt into the well with shovels (铲子), he soon realized what was happening. He felt very upset and cried sadly again. As the farmer and his neighbours continued throwing the dirt on his back, he suddenly had a good idea. Some time later, when the farmer finally looked down into the well, he was surprised at what he saw: every time the dirt landed on his back, he would shake it off and take a step up!Soon, everyone was amazed when the donkey stepped proudly over the edge of the well and ran away quickly! It seemed that it would bury him at first, but it actually helped him later because of the manner in which he faced his trouble. That is life! Just like the donkey, life is going to throw dirt on us, all kinds of dirt. As long as we face our problems in an active way, and refuse to give in to any trouble, each dirt is like a stepping stone with which we get out of the deepest wells. Never stop and never give up.

In class those students who surf the Internet understandlessons better than the others. Besides, people can use the Internet to write letters or stories and sendemails. Many students communicate with their friends online. You can also make friends by chatting onQQ. It is cheaper than calling somebody far away and it's also much quicker. Nearly one third of youngpeople surf the Internet for fun. They like to listen to music, watch films, and go to their favouritestars' websites. But can the Internet cause problems? Some of my students who used to study well atschool are now failing exams. Because they spend a lot of time playing computer games.1. Surfing the Internet can help open students' eyes, can't it? (no more than seven words)2. What's the writer? (no more than seven words)3. How can you make friends on the Internet? (no more than seven words)4. How many young people surf the Internet for fun? (no more than seven words)5. What do you think of surfing the Internet? How do we know what's right or wrong in English? Languages such as French and Spanish each has an official(官方的)organization that tells you what's correct. But there is nothing like that in English. So what can we do?There is, of course, Standard English. This is the kind of English you read in newspapers or informal letters. It is also the English you learn at school or in textbooks. However, Standard English is not official English. And unbelievably, linguists(语言学家)think Standard English is on the same level as all other types of English such as Cockney English,Yorkshire English, South African English, Australian English, Singaporean English... And according tolinguists, there is no such thing as Standard Spoken English.English is changing all the time. Every year, new words appear and others disappear. Wordschange too. For example, for many years, the Latin word "agendum" was the accepted singular formand "agenda" was the plural form. However, these days, very few people use the Latin-sounding"agendum",with "agenda" being the accepted singular form, and "agendas" the plural.Newspapers each has their own style when they write certain things. For example, The Guardian puts dates like "21 July 2021" (with the day first, followed by the month and no commas). However, the news agency Reuters writes them like this "July 21,2021" (with the month first, and a comma(逗号)between the day and the year). Other newspapers have different ways of doing it too. So,as you can see, there's no one "correct" way-there's a variety of ways and eachone is acceptable.Next time someone tells you that something is wrong, tell them that it isn't wrong, it is justEnglish.1. According to passage two, how many ways can you read or learn Standard English(no morethan four words)2. What is the plural form of the Latin word "agendum" in the past?(no more than four words)3. How does the news agency Reuters write "2016年1月20日"?( no more than four words)4. According to passage one, what languages have official organizations that tell you what iscorrect?(no more than four words)5. What should you do when you face the changes of English? Body language is one of the most powerful means of communication, often even more powerful than spokenlanguage. People around the world show all kinds of feelings, wishes and attitudes that theymight never speak aloud. It is possible to read others around us, even if they do not want us to catchtheir unspoken communication. Of course, body language can be misread, but many gestures and actionsare common. The most common facial expression is, of course, thesmile-its function is to show happiness and put people atease. It does not always mean that we are truly happy, however.Smilesaround the world can be false, hiding otherfeelingslike anger, fear or worry. There are unhappy smiles, such aswhen someone loses face and smiles to hide it. However, the general purpose of smiling is to show goodfeelings. From the time we are babies, we show unhappiness or anger by frowning(皱眉头).In most places around the world, frowning and turning one's back to someone shows anger. Making a fist(拳头)and shaking it almost always means that someone is angry. How about showing that I am bored? Looking away from people or yawning will,in most cases, make me appear to be uninterested. However, if I turn toward and look at someone or something, people from almost every culture will think that I am interested.Being respectful to people is subjective, based on each culture, but in general it is probably not agood idea to give a hug to boss or teacher. In almost every culture, it is not usually good to stand too close to someone of a higher rank(等级).Standing at a little distance with open hands will show that I am willing to listen. With so many cultural differences between people, it is great to have some similarities in bodylanguage. We can often be wrong about each other, so it is an amazing thing that we understand eachother as well as we do !1. What is even more powerful than spoken language according to the passage? (no more than four words)2. What is the most common facial expression? (no more than four words)3. How do babies normally show their anger? (no more than four words)4. What is not good to do when you stay with someone of a higher rank? (no more than 13 words)5. What does the writer mainly want to tell us? (no more than 14 words)从失败走向成功Why are so many people so afraid to fail? Quite simply because no one tells us how to face thefailure(失败).In fact, failure can become experience that means growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail. Most parents work hard to prevent failure or protect their children. One way is to lower standards. Nearly 60% of the parents choose this way. When a child finishes making a table, the mother describes it as "perfect" even though it doesn't stand still. The other way is to blame(责怪)others. If John fails in science, his teacher is unfair or stupid. There's a problem with the two ways. It makes a child unprepared for the real life if they don't meet enough failure. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time. The young should be allowed to experience failure.Failure never gives people pleasure. It hurts both grown-ups and children. But it can be really good to your life when you learn to use it.(Each answer should be no more than 6 words)1. What can failure become in fact?2. How many ways do most parents choose to prevent failure and protect their children?3. How do 60% of the parents prevent failure or protect their children4. What should young people be allowed to experience?5. What should you do when you face the failure?水稻People all over the world eat rice. Millions of people in Asia,Africa, and South America eat it every day of their lives. SomePeopleeat almost nothing but rice.Rice is a kind of grass. There are more than 7,000 kinds ofrice. Rice is grown in many countries, even in the southern part ofthe UnitedStates and in eastern Australia. No one really knows where rice came from. Some scientiststhink that it started to be planted in two places. Other scientists think that rice came from India, and Indian travellers took it to other parts of the world. There are two main ways to grow rice. Upland rice grows in dry soil. Most rice is planted in wet soil. People in many countries do all of the work of growing rice by hand. This is the same way farmers worked hundreds of years ago. In some countries, people now use machines on their rice farms. The farmers all use fertilizer. Some insects are enemies of rice. Farmers poison them.People use every part of the rice plant. When making teaching plans, the teachers decided to teach students how to grow healthy rice on school land. Air is important for everyone, we live depending on it. But what if it is polluted? Air pollution is a killer. The World Health Organization says it kills about seven million people around the world each year. Even if polluted air does not kill us, it can make us very sick. It may do more than hurt your body. Breathing dirty air can also influence your brain and your ability to think. It is true whether you believe or not.A new study shows that air pollution can influence our intelligence (智力) — cause a “huge” reduction in our intelligence. The study was carried out by researchers at Peking University and Yale University. Xi Chen of the Yale School of Public Health led the study. The study performed for a long period. The researchers studied about 25,000 people from across China. The youngest people in the study were 10 years old, while the oldest was 90. They came from 25 of China’s 34 provinces (省) with different air levels. These Chinese men, women and children were given language and math tests during the study. Then researchers compared the test results with levels of pollution in the air. They found that breathing polluted air can reduce a person’s education level by about one year.Xi Chen told that there are two main parts in the brain—white matter and gray matter. He said, “Air pollution has a great effect on the white matter, and white matter is more connected with a person’s language skills. So, that’s why language skills are more affected.” He also noted other studies have shown, “However gray matter is connected to our ability to solve math problems.”Chen suggests government to make serious changes. “We need to support in cleaning up the sky instead of using in short-term avoidance, for example the face masks or air filters (过滤).”1.What can influence your brain and your ability to think?________________________________________________2.Where was the new study carried out?________________________________________________3.How many people did the researchers study from across China?________________________________________________4.Why are language skills more affected than math?________________________________________________5.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?________________________________________________二、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
