Part One: Reading Aloud. (40 points)

Directions: Read one or two of the following paragraphs as fluently and accurately as

you can. Please pay attention to pauses after each sense group.

Oxford is a very old university, the oldest English-speaking university in the world.

And so there’re many traditions which are associated with the colleges, with the times of

the year, and with sport, and with eating, for example. Formal Hall is when we all eat together here in college, the professors and the students. Usually it takes place at seven

o’clock in the evening, and the professors sit on high table, which is the table over here,

and the students sit on common table, which are the tables here. But everybody eats together. It’s a very beautiful evening because there’s a speical meal and we eat by candlelight.

When the students take exams, they must go to a special building and it’s called Examination Schools. And also they must wear a special uniform, so they wear a gown

like mine, a black gown, and they wear a white shirt, and the men wear a white tie and black trousers. The women wear a white shirt and a black skirt or black trousers. I think

the Oxford traditions lend character to the place and it’s such an old institution, it should have traditions, but they can be very inconvenient.

Part Two: Topic Discussion. (60 points)

Directions: Please think about ONE of the following two topics carefully, discuss it

with your partner and make a dialogue based on the topic you choose for no more than

3 minutes.Higher marks are awarded to accurate pronunciation, good accent, good

grammar, diversified vocabulary, effective interaction, and brilliant ideas.

Topic One:

Judging from your previous experience, do you prefer to eat at home or in a restaurant? You may base your discussion on the specific advantages and disadvantages of each alternative.

Topic Two:

Do you think it possible to make close friends through social networking sites? What are the points of attention in this communication process? You may base your discussion on some specific examples.
