That's alot of this climate-warming greenhouse gas. But there are ways to cut the climate impact of flying, one of which is to ask planes to surf high-altitude winds every chance they get. It's not something they've been allowed to do. But that may change—and soon. Most jets crossing the Atlantic Ocean follow one of several fixed paths that are widely spaced because radar (雷达) had not been able to track aircraft everywhere above the Atlantic. But a new network of satellites could soon change that.Wells was part of a team inEnglandthat calculated the fastest possible routes for passenger planes. According to them , traveltime a plane takes when flying across theAtlanticvaries with the winds that a plane meets. For instance, eastbound (向东的) flights can get a powerful push. Westbound routes miss that benefit. Faster flights burn less fuel. And less burning gives off fewergreenhouse gases. The airline industry knows it has a high " carbon footprint." But it takes decades and many billions of dollars to design, test and fly new planes. Changing a flight path, in contrast, can cut costs and energy right away. The new study doesn't show how well such wind surfing would work for all planes, in all skies and the world over. Bui it does suggest that making flight routes more flexible could cut both fuel use and CO2in some places. However, if flight times vary depending on the wind, scheduling connecting flights and managing runways and gates would become more complicated. The researchers would have to work out the best flight paths that take such scheduling issues into consideration. They may also want to see if flying at different altitudes gives a wider choice of flexible routes at the times most people want to fly.National Air Traffic Services (NATS) which provides air-traffic control for theUnited Kingdomsaid it would temporarily disband its flight-paths system and work to allow airlines to choose flexible routes that would best limit their fuel use.4. What happens to east bound flights when crossing theAtlantic?A. They consume more fuel.B. They use less time and energy.C. They produce more greenhouse gases.D. They are against a stronger wind.5. What should be done to make adopting flexible flight routes possible?A. Calculating the flight time.B. Finding the best flight paths.C. Adjusting the size of jets.D. Adding more runways and gates.6. Which word can best replace the underlined word "disband” in the last paragraph?A. Stop.B. Copy.C. Handle.D. Restore.7. What can we infer from the text?A. Planes are producing the most carbon dioxide.B. New fuel is benefiting airline industries greatly.C. Carbon footprint is a serious problem in theUK.D. Surfing the winds can make air travel greener.CSome of the oldest art in human history is being damaged, scientists say. And climate change may be speeding up its loss. Newresearch reports that ancient rock art in Indonesian caves is degrading over time, as bits of rock slowly break off from the walls. It's a huge loss for human history.Salt crystals(结晶)building up on the walls are a key part of the problem, the study suggests. These salt crystals go into the cave walls, changing sizes as temperatures rise and fall. This process causes the rock to slowly break down.Salt crystals may become larger when exposed to repeated changes between wet conditions and periods of drought. These kinds of changes are expected to become more obvious as the climate continues to warm.In particular, the researchers say, climate change may cause more intense El Nino(厄尔尼诺)events in the future. These events can strengthen the kinds of conditions that help salt crystals form Scientists are still debating the exact influence of climate change on El Nino, a natural climate cycle that drives changing patterns of warming and cooling in thePacific Ocean. The new study, led by Jillian Huntley, examined 11 ancient cave art sites in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The researchers found evidence of salt formation at all 11 sites. It's merely a small part There are more than 300 known eave art sites around the region. The researchers note that salt crystals may indeed be part of the problem, adding that climate change is a growing threat, one that deserves more attention.8. What is the main cause of the rocks breaking off from the wall?A. Weather patterns.B. Salt crystals.C. Wet conditions.D. Drought Periods.9. Which of the following may researchers agree with?A. El Nino events prevent salt crystals forming.B. Climate change makes little difference to El Nino.C.Salt crystals may become much larger in wet conditions.D. Constant warm weather may cause salt crystals to change size.10. Which word best describes Huntley's attitude to climate change?A. Worried.B. Curious.C. Doubtful.D. Positive.11. What can we learn from thelast paragraph?A. The formation and patterns of salt crystals.B. The impact of climate change on ancient rock arts.C. The historical value of ancient rock art in cave sites.D. The threats of human activities to ancient eave art sites.DAlthough computer technology is often necessary today, using a pen or pencil activates more areas of your brain than a keyboard does. You can potentially remember more by handwriting, according to a new study. The potential benefits of handwriting for memory have been debated for some time. The new study set out to answer one question: How does handwriting compare to using a keyboard when it comes to remembering new information? In all,24 participants took part. Researchers asked each of them to write with a pen and then each was also asked to type on a keyboard. While performing these tasks, each volunteer wore a cap that held electrodes next to their head. It looked somewhat like a hair net fitted with 256 sensors. Those sensors recorded the participants' brainwaves. The electrodes noted which parts of the brain turned on during each task. And they showed that writing turned on memory areas in the brain while typing didn't.Audrey van der Meer, the new study's leader, says this suggests that when we write by hand, we remember better. “This is because writing involves complex movements that activate more areas of the brain. The increased brain activity gives the brain more ‘hooks’ to hang your memories on,” she explains. Van der Meer also points out that writing by hand is related to visual notetaking. “Rather than typing blindly, the visual notetaker has to think about what is important to write down. Then, key words can be interlinked by boxes, arrows and small drawings,” she adds. This study does not recommend banning digital devices. In fact, its authors point out, computers and other devices with keyboards have become necessary in modern society. Keyboarding can especially benefit those withcertain special needs (such as if they have trouble using their hands) and typing beats writing when it comes to speed, they add.12. Why were participants asked to wear caps in the study?A. To record their brainwavesB. To inform them of their tasksC. To allow them to focus on writingD. To protect their heads like hair nets13. What does Audrey van der Meer try to explain?A. Why handwriting is more complex than typingB. Why the brain works when it comes to learningC. Why handwriting helps remember informationD. Why key words are helpful to visual notetaking14. What is the study's authors' view on typing?A. It relieves people's handsB. It remains vital and helpfulC. It is not worth recommendingD. It is more challenging than writing15. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?A. How Can You Remember New Information?B. Handwriting Benefits Health in the LongRunC. Should Typing Take the Place of Handwriting?D. Handwriting Is Better for Memory Than Typing第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Dear headmaster,On hearing the news that a Reading Festival is to be held on campus on the World Book and Copyright Day and the possible project is open to be recommended, I (21) ______ hardly wait to write to you, sharing my humble opinions. As f ar as I’m concerned, the theme of the festival can be “sharing”,primarily (22) ______ (consist) of three parts. Firstly, the festival can start with a 30-minute discussion where groups of students can exchange and share what they (23) ______ (expose) to recently, expressing themselves freely. Following this section is the speech. Teacher and student representatives previously selected by us are to share and recommend the book they think really deserving to be read. It’s needless to say that the last sharing section which is the most meaningful is donation, during (24) ______ time everyone present, teachers or students, is expected to donate one or more books to the library. As for when (25) ______ (hold) the activity, the afternoon may be an ideal cho ice so that it won’t interrupt our classes. My advice is justified by the following reasons. First and foremost, it is in the group discussion and exchange that we students can have a thorough idea (26) ______ our peers are reading for the moment, serving as a driving force for our own reading journey. So it is (27) ______ the books recommended. Named by those “idols” in our mind, they will definitely win our heart. As for the donation, the benefits are exactly self-evident. In a world where __31__ is given for people’s accomplishments, failing feels dangerous. The fear of failure can stop people taking risks that might lead to success.Heidi Grant Halvorson, a psychologist, points out much of success is __32__ not on talent but on learning from your mistakes.About half of the people in the world hold that ability in an area --- be it creative or social skill --- is natural. The other half believes, instead, that someone might have a preference or something --- say painting or speaking foreign languages --- but this ability can be improved through __33__ practice or training. It’s almost impossible to think rationally(理性地) while shouting a t yourself, “I’m a failure”. But when you __34__ your thinking, you will probably see what you can control --- your behavior, your planning, your reactions --- and change them. The primary __35__ between successful people and unsuccessful people is that the successful people fail more. If you see failure as a monster approaching you, take another look.Success is as scary as failure. Researchers report that satisfaction grows on challenges. Think about it --- a computer game you can always win is boring; one you can win __36__, and with considerable effort, is fun. In pursuit of success, failure exposes areas that you need to __37__. So the failure serves as a brick wall to test how you apply yourself to __38__ your objectives and how much you want them. There is a way to distinguish whether a failure __39__ you to double down or walk away, says Halvorson. If, when things get rough, you remain fascinated by your goal, you should keep going. If what you’re doing is costing you too much time and energy or it’s not bringing you joy, you should give a second thought to the __40__ of your goal and even set a new one.III. But you probably cannot process caffeine(咖啡因) as constantly as your parents can because of your still-growing bodies and brains.I understand it feels grown-up to be drinking a cup of Starbucks. But all of this caffeine may worsen your anxiety, affect tonight’s sleep and tomorrow’s school performance, __44__ nutrient absorption and even cause real trouble when mixed with alcohol. The following four aspects may well __45__ the theme of this article. The power of caffeineCaffeine is widely considered a drug that is socially acceptable, universally used, even cool, but it still causes __46__ symptoms such as headaches, fatigue and a lack of attention when removed from coffee-addicts’ diets. How much is healthy?Caffeine is by no means a nutrient; you do not need it to be healthy. __47__, it is a substance that can leave you lacking nutrients because it has been shown to reduce calcium (钙). Caffeine probably causes the body to release water. And the more caffeinated drinks you consume, the less likely you are to drink water. So experts say that adolescents should consume __48__ amounts of caffeine a day (≤100 mg).Caffeine’s __49__According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 65 percent of middle and higher schoolers are __50__ to insufficient sleep on school nights. Some of their sleep problems can be mainly attributed to (归因于) caffeine, which can remain in the body for seven hours after __51__, thus causing teens’ worse performance the next day. It is widely assumed that adequate sleep __52__ proper growth and brain development. During childhood and adolescence, the brain goes through a period called synaptic pruning (突触修剪) when unnecessary connections are promoted.Caffeine labellingCaffeine is not listed on the Nutrition Facts column on food labels because it is not a __53__. It may be listed as an ingredient, but the amount is not required. Caffeine is now added to foods such as gum, candy and water, along with makeup and beauty products that __54__ to reduce swelling (肿块).Taste preferences and eating habits are often cultivated in childhood and adolescence, so teens, when you consume sweet, caffeinated drinks every time you feel sluggish (无精打采的), you are creating a pattern that may be hard to break as an adult. Choose the one that fits best according to the informationgiven in the passage you have just read.(A)There aren’t many actors around the world who have enough selfconfidence to turn down an offer from Steven Spielberg. Maybe that waswhy Juliette Binoche gave him a choice. She said she’d be happy to bein Jurassic Park as long as she could play a dinosaur. Of course he turned her down and it was probably a good thing. It’s difficult to imagine Juliette ripping people apart with her teeth. However, her decision doesn’t seem to have done her career any harm. She has gone on to make a string of hits, including The Unbearable Lightness of Being, The English Patient (for which she won an Oscar) and Chocolat.Success in the United States has not been so easy for otherforeign stars. Gerald Depardieu is a good example. Since hisfirst film in 1967, his filmography(影片集锦) lists 172 actingcredits. But he has struggled on the other side of the pond. While some of his films have been popular in the US, they haveusually been French films that travelled. One possibleexception was Green Card, directed by Peter Weir, where he playsa French immigrant who goes through a fake wedding in order to stay and work in the United States. This is a predictable but sweet romantic comedy which typecasts (分配同一类型角色) its lead actors in terms of national stereotypes. While some reviewers were kind, others shredded both the film and Depardieu’s performance. While Monsieur Depardieu hasn’t received the recognition he would have liked in the United States, one Mexican actor has achieved almost instant success. Gael Garcia Bernal first gained recognition in Amores Perros in 2000 and a year later in Y tu mama tambien. Since then he has appeared with hometown hero, Brad Pitt in Babel and, under the direction of top producer and director, Jim Jarmusch, he starred in Limits of Control. He hasn’t pickedup an Oscar yet, but he was nominated for a BAFTA (英国电影电视艺术学院奖) in 2005 for his performance as the South American hero revolutionary Che Guevara, in Motorcycle Diaries. In the same year he played American music icon Elvis Presley in The King.56.It can be inferred from the passage that Juliette Binoche ______.A. very much wanted to be in Jurassic ParkB. didn’t want to be in Jurassic ParkC. really wanted to play a dinosaur in Jurassic ParkD. was hesitant whether she could play a dinosaur well57.According to the writer, Gerald Depardieu’s most popular films ______.A. have been made in HollywoodB. have only been seen in EuropeC. have been made in France, but seen in other countries, tooD. have been made in Hollywood, but well received in France58. The last sentence in Para 2 “o thers shredded both the film and Depardieu’s performance”means others thought Depardieu’s performance and the film were ______.A. complexB. interestingC. terribleD. impressive59. The writer’s purpose in writing this article is to suggest that ______.A. Foreign actors generally do well in the United StatesB. American actors are able to earn more money than foreign actorsC. Foreign actors are playing an irreplaceable role in the United StatesD. a successful career in Europe or Latin America doesn’t guarantee success in the USA(B)You are going to read three competitions which offer holidays as prizes.Competition OneCompetition TwoCompetition Three60.Which competition extract(s) describe(s) what will happen on the flight?A. Competition Two.C. Competition One and Three.D. Competition One and Two.(C)The purpose of a map is to express graphically the relations of points and features on the earth’s surface to each other. These are determined by distance and direction. In early ti mes distance was often expressed in units of time, for example “so many hours’ march” or “a day’s journey by river”, but such measurements gave more information about the relative ease of crossing the local terrain than they did about actual distance. The otherelement is direction, but for the ordinary traveller, whose main concern was “Where do I go from here?” and “How far away is it?”, the accurate representation of direction was not of primary importance. Partly for this reason, written itineraries (行程) for a long time rivaled maps. Even today, certain types of maps, for example, those showing railway systems, may make little attempt to show true directions. Similarly, obvious landmarks along a route were at first indicated by signs, realistic or conventional (惯常的), and varied in size to indicate their importance. Clearly the conventions employed varied with the purpose of the map, and also from place to place, so that in studying early maps the first essential is to understand the particular convention employed. The history of cartography (制图) is largely that of the increase in the accuracy with which these elements of distance and direction are determined and in the comprehensiveness of the map content. In this development, cartography has called in other sciences to its aid. For example, instead of determining direction by observing the position of a shadow at midday, or of a constellation (星座) in the night sky, or even of a steady wind, use was made of terrestrial magnetism (地磁学) through the magnetic compass, and instruments were evolved which enabled horizontal angles to be calculated with great accuracy. The application of astronomical concepts, and the extension of the knowledge of the world through exploration, encouraged attempts to map the known world. Then astronomers discovered that the earth is not a perfect sphere, but is flattened slightly at the poles, which introduced further refinements into the mapping of large areas. Meanwhile, the demands being made of the map maker were shifting significantly. The traveller or the merchant ceased to be the sole user of maps. The soldier, especially after the introduction of artillery, and the problems of range, field of fire, and dead ground which it raised, demanded an accurate representation of the surface features, in place of the earlier conventional or pictorial delineation (描绘), and a solution in any degree satisfactory was not reached until the contour (等高线) was invented.63.Why might early maps have been misleading?A. Distances could not be calculated reliably.B. They were based on written itineraries.C. They were drawn by ordinary travelers.D. Distances tended to be overestimated.64.What problem did early maps exhibit when showing landmarks?A. The signs used bore little relation to the landmarks.B. The selection of landmarks was faulty.C. They used symbols that were not standardized.D. They sometimes included unimportant features.65.In the second paragraph, the writer says that ______ made better quality map-making easier.A. a greater understanding of climatic factorB. greater accuracy in draughtsmanship (绘图术)C. more accuracy in measurementD. more intensive map production66.What encouraged the search for a more precise means of mapping the physical geography of the landscape?A. Discovery in astronomy.B. The growth of mathematical science.C. The activities of the great explorers.D. Military considerations.Section CDirections: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.Self-Care Strategies for College StudentsMost college students don’t put self-care at the top of their to do lists. When you’re caught up in the whirlwind(旋风) of classes, extra-curricular, work, friendship, and final exams, it’s easy to ignore a task that doesn’t come with a deadline (even if that task is simply “taking care of yourself”). Embrace th e excitement and intensity of college life, but remember that maintaining your physical, mental, and emotional health is essential to your success and well-being. (67) ______ Instead, take time out to take care of yourself with some of these self-care strategies.Get Away for Some Alone Time. If you live with roommates, privacy can be hard to come by, so make it your mission to find a peaceful place on campus to call your own. (68) ______ Take a Mindful Walk Around Campus. When you’re strolling to class, t ry this mindfulness exercise to center yourself and destress. (69) ______ Feel free to people-watch, but pay attention to sensory details too, like the smell of a nearby barbecue or the sensation of pavement under your shoes. Take note of at least five beautiful or intriguing things you notice along your route. You might find yourself feeling a little calmer by the time you reach your destination.Stage a Sleep Intervention. How much sleep do you really get each night? (70) ______ By doing that, you’ll begin the process of repaying your sleep debt and establishing healthy new sleep habits. Don’t buy into the myth that the less you’re sleeping, the harder you’re working. Your mind and body need consistent sleep to operate at optimum levels –you simply can’t do your best work without it.Download a New Podcast. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) ofthe passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.Curiosity Is an Increasingly Rare VirtueMost of the breakthrough discoveries and remarkable inventions throughout history, from flints (打火石) for starting a fire to self-driving cars, have something in common: They are the result of curiosity. But the journalist Ian Leslie, in his newly-published book Curious: The Desire to Know and Why Your Future Depends on It, insists that curiosity is a much overlooked human virtue, crucial to our success, and we are losing it.Leslie presents considerable evidence for the claim that the society as a whole is growing less curious. In the U.S. and Europe, for example, the rise of the Internet, among other social and technological changes, has led to a declining consumption of news from outside the reader’s borders. Indeed, Google, for which Leslie expresses admiration, is also his frequent whipping boy (替罪羊): we seek only the information we want. But not everything is to be blamed on technology. The decline in interest in literary fiction is also one of the causes identified by Leslie. Why is this a problem? Because without curiosity we will lose the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship(企业家精神). Worse still, that lack of curiosity produces a relative lack of knowledge, and the lack of knowledge is difficult if not impossible to compensate for later on.Fortunately, some strategies can be employed to develop curiosity: If you just accept the world as it is without trying to dig deeper, you will certainly lose the ‘holy curiosity’. Of course, one effective way to dig deeper beneath the surface is asking questions: What is that? Why is it made that way? Who invented it? How does it work? ...And if you see learning as a burden, there’s no way you will want to dig deeper into anything. Th at will just make the burden heavier. But if you think of learning as something fun, you will naturally want to dig deeper.V. The purpose of the passage is to _________.A. educate childrenB. attract volunteersC. comfort the elderlyD. encourage the disabledCIn Australia, plenty of wild things can bite or sting(刺伤) you. Strangely enough, one of them is a tree. Now scientists have figured out what makes the tree’s sting so bad.The rainforests of eastern Australia are home to a stinging tree known as Dendrocnide. Many people callit the gympie-gympie tree—a name given to the tree by native Australians. It’s covered with sharp, needle-like hairs that carry poison. If you touch a gympie-gympie tree, you won’t forget it anytime soon. The pain can stay with you forhours, days or weeks. In some cases, it’s been reported to stay for months.Scientists have long looked for the source of this powerful sting. Now researchers at the University of Queensland have discovered what makes this stinging plant so painful. After carefully studying different kinds of gympie-gympie trees, the scientists were able to separate out different chemicals that the trees produce. This allowed them to identify a group of chemicals that they believed was responsible for the pain. The researchers created artificial versions of these chemicals, which they call “gympietides”. Sure enough, when the scientists injected mice with gympietides, the mice licked(舔) at the places where they’d been injected, indicating that they hurt in those places. When the scientists studied the way gympietides were built, they found that they formed a knot-like shape. The shape makes the chemicals very stable, which helps explain why the pain stays so long. The knot-like shape of the gympietides was similar to the shape of poisons produced by poisonous spiders and cone snails. The scientists were surprised to see three very different kinds of life all using similar poisons. Spiders and cone snails carry poisons because they catch food by stinging other creatures. It’s not clear how stinging helps the gympie-gympie tree.Though the tree’s sting may stop some animals from eating it, it doesn’t stop all animals. Beetles and pademelons (small s of the kangaroo) are able to eat the plant without trouble.8. Why is a touch on the stinging tree unforgettable?A. Because it has so unusual an appearance.B. Because it is extremely rare in existence.C. Because touching it creates a quite strange feeling.D. Because the pain caused by it doesn’t go away quickly.9. What do scientists fail to find out about the stinging tree?A. How it produces poisons.B. What poisons it produces.C. How it benefits from the sting.D. The consequences of its sting.10. What does the text imply about the stinging tree?A. It produces the same poisons as spiders.B. Poisonous as it is, it also has natural enemies.C. Animals are wise enough to stay away from it.D. Only one chemical in it causes pain to the toucher.11. What’s the best title for the text?A. Scientists Discover Stinging Tree's SecretB. Caution: Stinging Tree Can Bite and Poison YouC. Scientists Discover a Strange Species in AustraliaD. Effective Ways to Avoid Being Hurt byStinging TreeD“My P.E. teacher taught me maths.”It has been a common joke for years but when a P.E. teacher applied for the head-teacher job, many parents worried that “the joke could come true”. Some parents asked, “Does the P.E. teacher know maths and English? If not, how is he supposed to tutor the students?” But there were still parents who believed P.E. teachers had more time to discipline the students since they didn’t have many classes. This concern is actually a “subject bias”, that is, choosing a P.E. teacher as the head-teacher is not good for the students’ grades since he doesn’t know Chinese, maths, or English. It is acceptable for Chinese teachers, maths teachers and English teachers to be head-teachers because these subjects are important to entrance exams and scores. Such a concern reflects parents’ anxiety in the current educational environment, which tends to link the head-teacher’s responsible subject with the facts whether the school cares about the class and the children’s performances in the subject. Many people care about their kids’ academic performances only. They don’t care about their kids’ P.E. performance at all. Even if kids have P.E. classes, parents care little. P.E. teachers are in humble position and their classes are often occupied by other teachers. Of course, if students, P.E. performance is related to grades and entrance exams, parents won’t mind “a P.E. teacher being the head-teacher”.At the moment, P.E. is gradually included in entrance exams. In terms of high school entrance examination,Guangzhouwill launch a new high school entrance exam which includes P.E. performance and Health examination in 2021, raising the score to 70 points. In terms of the college entrance examination, universities having the right of independent enrollments added P.E. tests to their entrance exams in 2019. This practice is seen as an important signal that the assessment of physical fitness and athletic ability, which are important aspects of a student’s overall quality, may be included in the college entrance examination in the future. We hope that it’s a trend for P.E. teachers, music teachers and art teachers to become head-teachers.12. By saying “My P.E. teacher taught me maths”, what does the author intend to show us?A. It is just a joke that seldom happened in reality.B. P.E. teachers hardly assist students in maths.C. P.E. teachers are good at teaching maths..D. Parents doubt the ability of P.E. teacher.13. We can infer from paragraph 2 that a P.E. teacher .A. is of little benefit for students’ academic performanceB. is humbler than Chinese, math or English teachersC. reflects whether the school cares about the classD. gets unfairly judged due to the current educational system14. Why doesGuangzhouraise proportion of P.E. performance in high school entrance examination?A. To raise students’ awareness of physical health.B. To call on parents to pay attention to P.E. teachers.C. To test the overall ability of high school students.D. To make P.E. teachers equal with other teachers.15. What opinion does the author hold towards P.E. teachers working as head-teachers?A. Neutral.B. Unexpected.C. Supportive.D. Critical.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D.Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in thepassage you have just read.(A)There aren’t many actors around the world who have enough selfconfidence to turn down an offer from Steven Spielberg. Maybe that was why Juliette Binoche gave him a choice. She said she’d be happy to be inJurassic Park as long as she could play a dinosaur. Of course he turned her down and it was probably a good thing. It’s difficult to imagine Juliette ripping people apart with her teeth. However, her decision doesn’t seem to have done her career any harm. She has gone on to make a string of hits, includi ng The Unbearable Lightness of Being, The English Patient (for which she won an Oscar) and Chocolat.Success in the United States has not been so easy for other foreign stars.Gerald Depardieu is a good example. Since his first film in 1967, hisfilmography (影片集锦) lists 172 acting credits. But he has struggled onthe other side of the pond. While some of his films have been popular inthe US, they have usually been French films that travelled. One possibleexception was Green Card, directed by Peter Weir, where he plays a Frenchimmigrant who goes through a fake wedding in order to stay and work in theUnited States. This is a predictable but sweet romantic comedy whichtypecasts(分配同一类型角色) its lead actors in terms of national stereotypes. He hasn’t picked up an Oscar yet, but he was nominated for a BAFTA (英国电影电视艺术学院奖) in 2005 for his performance as the South American hero revolutionary Che Guevara, in Motorcycle Diaries. In the same year he played American music icon Elvis Presley in The King.56.It can be inferred from the passage that Juliette Binoche ______.A. very much wanted to be in Jurassic ParkB. didn’t want to be in Jurassic ParkC. really wanted to play a dinosaur in Jurassic ParkD. was hesitant whether she could play a dinosaur well57.Acc ording to the writer, Gerald Depardieu’s most popular films ______.A. have been made in HollywoodB. have only been seen in EuropeC. have been made in France, but seen in other countries, tooD. have been made in Hollywood, but well received in France58. The last sentence in Para 2 “o thers shredded both the film and Depardieu’s performance”means othersthought Depardieu’s performance and the film were ______.A. complexB. interestingC. terribleD. impressive59. The writer’s purpose in writing this article is to suggest that ______.A. Foreign actors generally do well in the United StatesB. American actors are able to earn more money than foreign actorsC. Competition One and Three.D. Competition One and Two.(C)The purpose of a map is to express graphically the relations of points and features on the earth’s surface to each other. These are determined by distance and direction. In early times distance was often expressed in units of time, for example “so many hours’ march” or “a day’s journey by river”, but such measurements gave more information about the relative ease of crossing the local terrain than they did about actual distance. The other element is direction, but for the ordinary traveller, whose main concern was “Where do I go from here?” and “How far away is it?”, the accurate representation of direction was not of primary importance. Partly for this reason, written itineraries (行程) for a long time rivaled maps. Even today, certain types of maps, for example, those showing railway systems, may make little attempt to show true directions. Similarly, obvious landmarks along a route were at first indicated by signs, realistic or conventional(惯常的), and varied in size to indicate their importance. For example, instead of determining direction by observing the position of a shadow at midday, or of a constellation(星座) in the night sky, or even of a steady wind, use was made of terrestrial magnetism (地磁学) through the magnetic compass, and instruments were evolved which enabled horizontal angles to be calculated with great accuracy. The soldier, especially after the introduction of artillery, and the problems of range, field of fire, and dead ground which it raised, demanded an accurate representation of the surface features, in place of the earlier conventional or pictorial delineation(描绘), and a solution in any degree satisfactory was not reached until the contour (等高线) was invented.63.Why might early maps have been misleading?A. When you’re caught up in the whirlwind (旋风) of classes, extra-curricular, work, friendsh ip, and final exams, it’s easy to ignore a task that doesn’t come with a deadline (even if that task is simply “taking care of yourself”). Embrace the excitement and intensity of college life, but remember that maintaining your physical, mental, and emotional health is essential to your success and well-being. When you’re strolling to class, try this mindfulness exercise to center yourself and destress. That will just make the burden heavier. But if you think of learning as something fun, you will naturally want to dig deeper.V. Maybe you’ve heard it could make you sick, or that it can damage your hair or skin. What’s the truth? Let’s address the “it can make you sick” myth first. “___67___” says Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of medicine. While this idea persists, Schaffner says it was long ago disproved. It’s true that you’re much more likely to catch a common cold during the winter month s. But this has to do with the ways respiratory (呼吸的) viruses spread, he says.___68___ Illness-causing bacteria and viruses don’t appear naturally, and so you’re not going to make yourself ill by getting your pillow a little damp at night, Schaffner says. But there is a possible exception. Some research has shown that pillows—especially those made with synthetic materials—can contain asthma- or allergy-triggering molds(哮喘或致敏菌) and fungus, which tend to do well in damp environments, and so do dust mites, says Dr. Payel Gupta, a spokesperson for the American Lung Association.Gupta says there’s no evidence that people who sleep with wet hair experience more allergy or asthma symptoms. ___69___ But if you wake up with a stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, breathing problems or other allergy or asthma symptoms—or even if you don’t—you should wash your pillow cases and sheets in hot water at least once a week to reduce your exposure to any potential irritants (刺激物).When it comes to the health of your hair and skin, there may be a few other reasons to worry about wet hair. “Generally, it’s thought not to be good for hair to sleep with it wet,” says Dr. George Cotsarelis, a professor of dermatology (皮肤病学), “___70___”It’s also worth noting that almost anything you do to your hair—from brushing and blow-drying it to coloring it or exposing it to the sun—can damage it.Keys: 67-70 FEACIII. In fact, its defining feature is displacement. Typically, people who move into these changing neighborhoods are wealthier and more educated than residents who are displaced.A recent flood of new research has focused on the displacement effects of environmental cleanup and green space initiatives. ___68___Land for new development and resources to fund extensive cleanup of poisonous sites are scarce in many cities. ___69___ And in neighborhoods where gentrification has already begun, a new park or farmers market can worsen the problem by making the area even more attractive to potential high-income people and pricing out long-term residents. In some cases, developers even create temporary community gardens or farmers markets or promise more green space than they eventually deliver, in order to market a neighborhood to buyers looking for green pleasantness.___70___ It makes deindustrialization seem both inevitable and desirable, often by quite literally replacing industry with more natural-looking landscapes. When these neighborhoods are finally cleaned up, after years of activism by longtime residents, those advocates often are unable to stay and enjoy the benefits of their efforts.Keys: 67-70 EBDFIII. But while the delivery services score well on reducing food waste, buying the same ingredients from the supermarket almost always saves energy overall simply because meal kits use so much single-use packaging. The good news is that if you have meals t hat are tailored for consumption, people won’t over-buy and you have less food waste. You fine-tune the portions to what people will actually eat.Beyond the cost of the waste itself, thrown-away food generates methane(甲烷)that contributes to climate change. ___68____ A 2018 report from the Boston Consulting Group found that the waste was set to soar by a third by 2030 when global food waste was estimated to reach 2.1 bn tonnes.Meal kits can reduce transport emissions if they mean people take fewer trips to the supermarket. If people only went to buy goods that are unlikely to decay such as soap and toilet paper, they might only have to visit the supermarket once every couple of months. That delivery truck can carry meals for you and dozens of neighbors. ____69___The study found that even if delivered meal kits reduced food waste to zero, they would still use up more energy overall than buying the same food from the supermarket unless the energy used for the meal kit packaging was cut by a fifth. ___70___ All the environmental benefits are lost. But if the packaging can be reused, you can get some benefits.Keys: 67-70 EFCBIII. Reading ComprehensionSection CDirections: Read the following passage. On March 18, 1965, spaceman Aleksi Leonov became the first human to complete an Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA) or spacewalk. It marked the first time that a human was able to leave a spacecraft and operate in the emptiness of space. It is a dangerous procedure, but one that is vital for the success of manned space missions.___67___ In space, a spacesuit must protect people from extreme cold and heat, provide air to breathe, and remove extra carbon dioxide. ___68___ Too much of it, and the spacesuit becomes firm and difficult to move in. Too little of it, and astronauts can become dangerously sick after returning to their spacecraft.Astronauts now perform complex jobs in the emptiness of space in modern spacesuits. They have logged many hours repairing and upgrading equipment on satellites during EVAs. ___69___ On July 20th, 1969, American astronaut Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon for the first time. There is no atmosphere on the moon, but there is gravity—about 17 percent of Earth’s, which means Neil needed a special suit for walking on the moon’s surface. Suits for the moon are equipped for exploration far from any vehicles, including tough boots that can resist cuts from the rough surface while walking. But sharp rocks weren’t the only danger to astronauts. The moon surface is covered with a fine and flour-like dust which consists of small particles (颗粒)left over from the numerous meteorite(陨石) strikes on the moon. ___70___ When astronauts would leave the moon’s gravity, the dust on their suits began floating all over. It got into delicate eq uipment inside the spacecraft and the astronaut’s eyes and lungs. As different space agencies plan for returning people to the moon, new EVA suit designs will have to take something else into account. Keeping astronauts safe also means keeping their suits clean.Keys: 67-70 FCABIII. Reading ComprehensionSection CDirections: Read the following passage. What many people don’t know is that trash has become a problem in outer space too. ___67___Statistically, there are more than 22,000 pieces of junk in space around the earth. And these are just the items that we can see from the surface of the earth by telescopes or radars. ___68___ Objects, like bits of old space rockets or satellites, move around the planet at very high speeds, so fast that even a very small piece can break important satellites or become dangerous to people, particularly astronauts. If the tiniest piece of junk crashed into a spacecraft, it could damage the vehicle. That’s beca use the faster an object moves, the greater the impact if the object collides with something else.To help minimize additional space junk, countries around the world have agreed to limit the time their space tools stay in orbit to 25 years. Each tool must be built to fall safely into the earth’s atmosphere, or the mass of gases that surround the earth, after that. ___69___Many scientists are also proposing different ways to clean up space junk. The Germans have been planning a space mission with robots that would collect pieces of space trash and bring them back to Earth so that they can be safely destroyed."In our opinion the problem is very challenging, and it's quite urgent as well," said MarcoCastronuovo, an Italian Space Agency researcher who is working to solve the problem. ___70___ Many of these objects are tools that help people use their cell phones or computers."The time to act is now; as we go farther in time we will need to remove more and more fragments," he says.Keys: 67-70 FBDAIII. This process can be challenging, especially for those students who had thought very carefully about their chosen major and their potential career path—or those who majored in a field not directly connected to a specific career he eventually got. If you are in one of these groups, fear not! 67Some majors are tied directly to specific career fields. For example, if you wish to become a teacher, you will likely have needed to complete an education program and eventually sit for alicensing exam. The same applies to majors in nursing. If you did not complete an acceptable nursing program, you won’t be able to take the nursing licensing exam. 68 Other majors, however, are closely related to career paths but don’t necessarily require a degree in the area. For example, students who majored in finance, math, or statistics may also have the necessary skills to be hired as an accountant.Hopefully, as a college student, you were able to do more than just attend classes and read your course books. Your non-academic experiences can be very influential on your future career as well. Did you work during college, volunteer, or participate in a club or organization? ___69___ If you volunteered with a non-profit organization such as a homeless or domestic violence shelter, seek out positions in social services related to case management or victim advocacy. You may qualify for a position regardless of your major.Although it often seems like your college major alone determines your career fate, this just isn’t the case. 70 If you don’t know w hat career options to consider based on your major, talk to your faculty or academic advisor. (67) ______ The Carnevale di Venezia is thought to date back to the 11th century, making it one of the world’s oldest. Carnivals are held in many Catholic countries, such as Spain and Brazil, where they serve as a last chance to eat, drink and be merry before the deprivations of Lent, the 40 days of fasting(斋戒)that precede Easter. It is thought that the masks allowed Venetians to hide their identities, allowing the poor to mix with the wealthy, breaking strict social order, even if only for a brief and controlled period.(68) ______ The theme of Carnival 2019 is “Tutta colpa della Luna,”or “Blame the moon,”marking a half-century since man first walked on the satellite. To prevent overcrowding, authorities have installed turnstiles at the entrances to the historic St. Marks’Square, closing it off to new visitors once 23,000 revelers have entered. Costumed revelers are also searched as they enter the square.Venice is situated across a group of 118 small islands that are separated by canals and linked by over 400 bridges. The islands are located in the shallow Venetian Lagoon, an enclosed bay that lies between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers. It also suggests that parents balance a child’s screen time with other activities.68 Christopher Ferguson, who teaches psychology at Stetson University in Florida, notes a lack of evidence supporting reports that too many hours spent playing video games or watching TV is truly harmful.Ferguson seems interested in one idea: the link between video games and violent or risky behavior. When he saw results from a recent British survey on screen time, he wanted to know more. The British study found a small negative effect—about a one percent increase—in aggression and depression among children who had six or more hours of screen time a day. ___69___ So, Ferguson and his team examined answers from a survey on risky behaviors. The study involved about 6,000 boys and girls in Florida, whose average age was 16.Data from this survey found that American children are also fairly resistant to the negative effects of electronic media. Among those who used screens up to six hours a day, the survey found: a 0.5 percent increase in criminal behavior; a 1.7 percent increase in signs of depression; and a 1.2 percent negative effect on school grades. 70 To further argue his point that screen time is not harmful, Ferguson adds that children should become familiar with screen technology. Electronic devices, he says, are a part of our everyday lives.Keys: 67-70 D BCEIII. Reading ComprehensionSection CDirections: Read the following passage. That was the effect Victor had on people. ___68___ ”Boys to the right and girls to the left,” said Uncle Jean. Our two cabins were directly opposite each other. Inside, everything was neat, bare and clean. While Aunt Reine, Claudine and I were unpacking, there was a knock on the door.Victor stood there, wearing a bright-red and orange life-jacket. “Why are you wearing that?” Claudine protested. “Our ship hasn’t even sailed yet!” “In case the China Star starts going down. The sun, of course, is one of them. The other is known as Polaris, the North Star. ___67___. Therefore, it is a great compass(指南针).When people in the northern part of Earth look toward Polaris, they can be certain that they are facing north. The permanence of Polaris in the north sky has helped countless people find their destinations. Before the invention of modern navigation tools, sailors relied on Polaris. From the top of their ships, sailors would look for Polaris to figure out their place at sea. They figured out the angle between the star and the horizon to determine their latitude(纬度). As long as the equations were not wrong, the results were very reliable. Polaris also let sailors determine North, South, East, and West. ___68___To those who sail at night, changeable storms and dark clouds were more than annoying things. ___69___.It’s possible for a captain to make an accidentalwrong turn. The ship could become stranded at sea, and the frustrated captain would have no way to get the ship back on the right course. Writer Richard Louv came up with the term in his book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder. ___67___Louv explained that children who play outside often are less likely to become ill, stressed, or aggressive compared to those who watch a lot of television and spend most of their free time indoors. Indeed, studies appear to back up that claim by noting that children who spend a significant amount of time outdoors tend to have better mental and physical health. ___68____ Nevertheless, they may be worsened by staying inside watching TV, playing video games, or being glued to a smartphone. What’s more, research also suggests that getting a nature fix can help boost the immune system.According to Louv, the effects of NDD can be lessened or even reversed by making sure parents encourage their kids to enjoy playing outdoors as much as they can. ___69___ Rather, they should lead by example, spending time with them in the park, at the beach, camping, anddoing other activities, Louv said. And even if they don’t find a way to solve their problems, it feels good to let off some steam. Indeed, having close friends to trust is a good relief against poor mental health. ___67___ The term psychologist’s use for negative problem sharing is “co-rumination”. Co-rumination is the mutual encouragement to discuss problems too much, repeatedly going over the same problems, expecting future problems and focusing on negative feelings. It is more about keeping talking about problems than solving them. __68__ In a study involving children aged seven to 15 years of age, researchers found that co-rumination in both boys and girls is associated with“high-quality” and close friendships. However, in girls, it was also associated with anxiety and depression (the same association was not found with the boys). If we look at the theory behind why individuals ruminate, it may shed some light on why friends co-ruminate. ___69___ So if two people believe rumination is beneficial, then working together to co-ruminate to find answers may seem like a useful thing to do, as two heads may appear better than one. But focusing on problems and negative emotion together can increase negative beliefs and moods — and result in a greater need to co-ruminate.Traditionally, therapy has not prioritised handling rumination or co-rumination directly as maintaining factors in psychological problems. Instead, approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) have aimed to challenge only the content of rumination. Humanistic approaches such as counselling have provided conditions to potentially ruminate on the content of problems. And psychodynamic (心理动力的) approaches such as psychoanalysis have aimed to analyze the content of rumination.___70___ But if this occurs in therapy, a strong therapeutic relationship may well be a positive outcome of co-rumination —regardless of whether the client’s symptoms improve or not. And, on the social side, discussing problems with friends doesn’t always have to lead to worsening mental health, as long as the discussion involves finding solutions and the person with the problem acts on those solutions. Then, relationships can be positive and beneficial to both parties, and a problem shared can really be a problem halved.Keys: 67-70 DFACIII. Mental health is a growing concern within occupations that play important social roles, such as medical professionals, firefighters, and police officers. And because policing is one of the most stressful occupations, with high levels of mental health and well-being difficulties, we conducted a study of a formal mentoring program in an English police force._____68_____ It was designed to support the development of junior officers by giving them a way to discuss concerns and receive guidance. Our study involved two parts. First, we conducted a field experiment: we compared the mental health of 17 mentor-mentee pairs to a control group of 18 pairs of senior and junior officers that did not participate in the program. Second, we interviewed both the mentees and their mentors separately. Our experiment results showed that people who served as mentors experienced lower levels of anxiety, and described their job as more meaningful, than those who did not mentor. We learned from our interviews that mentoring afforded senior officers, as well as junior officers, a chance to discuss and reflect on concerns. _____69_____By acknowledging that these anxieties were common, both mentees and mentors grew more comfortable in discussing them and in sharing different coping mechanisms. Why does mentoring have this impact on mentors? _____70_____ Despite the pressures that comes with their roles —including abuse, difficult decision making, and the risk of death —police officers tend not to seek support from other officers, including more senior colleagues. This is to avoid negative stigma, a shameful reputation, associated with mental health disorders. Mentoring thereby offered a way to build trust within a relationship that laid a foundation for open。

In Panama City Beach, Florida, a city with a permanent population of approximately 36,000, more than half a million university students arrive during the month of March to play and party, making it the number one spring break destination in the United States.A week-long drinking binge is not for everyone, however, and a growing number of American university students have found a way to make spring break matter. For them, joining or leading a group of volunteers to travel locally or internationally and work to address problems such as poverty, homelessness, or environmental damage makes spring break a unique learning experience that university students can feel good at.During one spring break week, students at James Madison University in Virginia participated in 15 “alternative spring break” trips to nearby state s, three others to more distant parts of the United States, and five international trips. One group of JMU students traveled to Bogalusa, Louisiana, to help rebuild homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Another group traveled to Mississippi to organize creative activities for children living in a homeless shelter. One group of students did go to Florida, butnot to lie on the sand. They performed exhausting physical labor such as maintaining roving invasive plant species that threaten the native Florida ecosystem.Students who participate in alternative spring break projects find them very rewarding. While most university students have to get their degrees before they can start helping people, student volunteers are able to help people now. On the other hand, the accommodations are far from glamorous. Students often sleep on the floor of a school or church, or spend the week camping in tents. But students only pay around $250 for meals and transportation, which is much less than some of their peers spend to travel to more traditional spring break hot spot.56 . How many university students travel to Panama Beach City every March for spring break?A.Around 36,000.B.Around 50,000.C.Around 500,000.D.Around 10,000.57 . The underlined word “ binge” in paragraph 2 probably means ______.A.doing too much of something B.studying for too longC.refusing to do something D.having very little alcohol58 . Which of the following gives the main idea of the third paragraph?A.One group of JMU students worked on homes damaged by a hurricane.B.Children living in homeless shelters enjoy creative activities.C.Some students work to help the environment on alternative spring break trips.D.University students do different types of work on alternative spring break trips.59 . What is implied in this article is that ______.A.university students spend more than $250 for traditional spring break tripsB.university students complain about the accommodations on alternative spring break trips C.university students may take fewer alternative spring break trips in the futureD.university students would prefer to wait until they have their degrees to start helping people(★★)Cropping (修剪) an Image With the Snap Shot ProgramWelcome to the world of photo-editing!Cropping an image allows you to zero in on (对准,聚焦) just the portion that is important to your project. For example, you may want to insert an image of a covered train in a report but may not wantto include the whole train. Cropping the image allows you to select only the small area you wish to retain (保留) and eliminate all other portions of the original picture.Option 1: Cropping by Placing the Image in a ShapeScreen Shot 1Using one of Snap Shot’s standard shapes as a photo-editing tool requires no special abilities. To crop an image with a standard shape:a. Click Cropping & Orientation from the Effects menu.b. Click to select one of the six shapes to frame your image.c. Use the mouse pointer to draw a frame around the portion of the image you wish to retain. Re-size the frame by dragging the shape’s sizing handles. When you are satisfied with the results, click Cut It.d. Snap Shot will automatically return to the project that is open. (You may also copy or cut the cropped image and paste it into another application.)Option 2: Freehand Cropping of an ImageScreen Shot 2If you want to trace the shape of an object in order to crop out everything else, freehand cropping is the way to go. To crop an image freehand:a. Click Freehand Crop from the Cropping & Orientation option on the Effects menu.b. Using the mouse pointer, trace around the shape you want to crop. Be sure to completely enclose the image by ending at the same place you began outlining.c. Click Cut It. Snap Shot will automatically return to the project that is open.60 . The main purpose of the passage is to ______.A.describe the features of Snap ShotB.explain how to use Snap Shot to select sections of a pictureC.show that Snap Shot is an easy tool to useD.discuss how to use the features of Snap Shot61 . To perform Option 2, one should first ______.A.select the imageB.use the mouse pointer to draw a frameC.select Cropping & Orientation from the Effects menuD.re-size the frame by dragging the sizing handles on the shape62 . Why is freehand cropping discussed after cropping with shapes?A.To introduce a simpler technique before moving on to a more complex one.B.To proceed from a more useful technique to one with fewer practical applications.C.To order the options alphabetically.D.To arrange the text, making space for the screen shots.(★★)Why do so many Americans distrust what they read in their newspapers? The American Society of Newspaper Editors is trying to answer this painful question. The organization is deep into a long self-analysis known as the journalism credibility project.Sad to say, this project has turned out to be mostly low-level findings about factual errors and spelling and grammar mistakes, combined with lots of head-scratching puzzlement about what in the world those readers really want. But the sources of distrust go way deeper. Most journalists learn to see the world through a set of standard patterns into which they report each day’s events. In other words, there is a traditional story line in the newsroom culture that provides a backbone and a ready-made narrative structure for otherwise confusing news. There exists a social and cultural disconnect between journalists and their readers, which helps explain why the “standard patterns” of the newsroom seem foreign to many readers. In a recent survey, questionnaires were sent to reporters in five middle-size cities around the country, plus one large metropolitan area. Then residents in these communities were phoned at random and asked the same questions.Replies show that compared with other Americans, journalists are more likely to live in upscale neighborhoods, have maids, own Mercedeses, and trade stocks, and they’re less likely to go to church, do volunteer work, or put down roots in a community.Reporters tend to be part of a broadly defined social and cultural elite (精英), so their work tends to reflect the traditional values of this elite. The alarming distrust of the news media isn’t rooted in inaccuracy or poor reportorial skills but in the daily conflict of world views between reporters and their readers. This is an explosive situation for any industry, particularly a declining one. Here is a troubled business that keeps hiring employees whose attitudes vastly annoy the customers. Then it sponsors lots of symposiums (讨论会) and a credibility project devoted to wondering why customers are annoyed and fleeing in large numbers. But it never seems to get around to noticing the cultural and class prejudices that so many former buyers are complaining about. If it did, it would open up its diversity program, now focused narrowly on race and gender, and look for reporters who differ broadly by outlook, values, education, and class.63 . What is the passage mainly about?A.Needs of the readers all over the world.B.Causes of the public disappointment about newspapers.C.Origins of the declining newspaper industry.D.Aims of a journalism credibility project.64 . The results of the journalism credibility project turned out to be ______.A.quite trustworthy B.somewhat conflictingC.very informative D.rather shallow65 . The basic problem of journalists as pointed out by the writer lies in their ______.A.working attitude B.traditional lifestyleC.world outlook D.educational background66 . Despite its efforts, the newspaper industry still cannot satisfy the readers owing to its ______.A.failure to realize its real problem B.tendency to hire annoying reportersC.likeliness to do inaccurate reporting D.prejudice in matters of race and gender八、七选五(★★) Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.If you shower before bed, you’ve probably wondered whether sleeping with damp hair is a problem. Maybe you’ve heard it could make you sick, or that it can damage your hair or skin. What’s the truth? Let’s address the “it can make you sick” myth first. “67 . ” says Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of medicine. While this idea persists, Schaffner says it was long ago disproved. It’s true that you’re much more likely to catch a common cold during the winter months. But this has to do with the ways respiratory (呼吸的) viruses spread, he says.68 . Illness-causing bacteria and viruses don’t appear naturally, and so you’re not going to make yourself ill by getting your pillow a little damp at night, Schaffner says. But there is a possible exception. Some research has shown that pillows—especially those made with synthetic materials—can contain asthma- or allergy-triggering molds (哮喘或致敏菌) and fungus, which tend to do well in damp environments, and so do dust mites, says Dr. Payel Gupta, a spokesperson for the American Lung Association.Gupta says there’s no evidence that people who sleep with wet hair experience more allergy or asthma symptoms. 69 . But if you wake up with a stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, breathing problems or other allergy or asthma symptoms—or even if you don’t—you should wash your pillow cases and sheets in hot water at least once a week to reduce your exposure to any potential irritants (刺激物).When it comes to the health of your hair and skin, there may be a few other reasons to worry about wet hair. “Generally, it’s thought not to be good for hair to sleep with it wet,” says Dr. George Cotsarelis, a professor of dermatology (皮肤病学), “70 . ”It’s also worth noting that almost anything you do to your hair—from brushing and blow-drying it to coloring it or exposing it to the sun—can damage it.A.Hence, any concerns about wet hair are theoretical.B.In some cases, wet hair may actually be a helpful sleep aid.C.Over time, it can lead to breakages, as well as a loss of shine.D.There may be some mild risks associated with going to bed with wet hair.E. Another wet-hair rumor (谣传) is the idea that harmful bacteria will colonize your pillow.F. This idea seems to fit into the old bit of custom that getting yourself chilled and wet will cause you to come down with a cold.九、概要写作(★★) 71 . Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. What comes first: the optimism or the good health?Optimism, defined as the general expectation that the future will be favorable, could provide ways to improve health, some researchers believe. But scientists remain unsure if optimism goes ahead of health improvements, or vice versa.A recent study suggests that most people can’t help but to think optimistically. This study was conducted by Ed O’Brien, a social psychologist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The findings suggest that people have a natural tendency to think positively about their future.Participants were asked to create a list of imaginary personal experiences that would make them happy or unhappy over the course of the next year. They then ranked how difficult it was to plan that list and how happy they believed they would be in the future overall. The easier it was for people to think of positive future experiences, the happier they imagined they would be. However, there was no relationship between easily developing negative future experiences and expecting to be unhappy as a result.O’Brien concluded that people seem to discount the possibility that future negative events will make them happy overall, suggesting that optimism might come more naturally. “We’re not as used to thinking about the future in terms of things that are going to go wrong.” O’Brien’s study is one of many to find that people are consistently optimistic about their future, predicting pleasant experiences and discounting unpleasant ones. If optimism may lead to better health and people generally tend to think optimistically, what does this mean for the connection between mental and physical health? “If we can make sure that optimism comes before healthy states, we might be able to involve and imp rove people’s optimism,” Boehm explained. However, it’s difficult to determine what comes first: the optimism or the good health.___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________十、汉译英(★★★★) Directions: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.72 . 看来小王并不满足于已取得的进步。

Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)How Would You Like to Pay?How do you pay for your coffee? Is it with change? I use my tap-and-go card. I don’t even need to enter my PIN number or a signature to approve payment. It’s quicker and everybody in the queue is happy.Contactless payments are gaining popularity. Those concerned about security will be pleased to know that the amount of money you can spend in one-go is limited –in the UK it’s currently £30. But if the card is used a few times in a row, a PIN number will be needed. If a thief gets hold of your card and goes on a crazy shopping, your bank covers you against fraud. However, if someone steals your bills, that’s your bad luck! For those who are always forgetting where they put their cards, there’s a new solution: wearable technique: clothing and devices that have combined electronic technology. Kenneth Cukier, an economist and technology expert, says: “You can simply take any wireless card and the chip (芯⽚) from it that your bank might issue you with, and you can put it in a coat. When you want to make a payment just wave your arm in front of the terminal and leave the coffee shop with your latte(拿铁咖啡). This is intended for people who don’t want to take their card out of their wallet, use their phone or their watch.”Good, isn’t it? And new ways of spending money are not stopping there. The future is all about biometrics(⽣物识别技术). Very convenient if you are at the beach or a festival –there’s a new system in development which will make it possible to read the unique maps of veins (静脉) under the surface of your finger, and use them to confirm payments –or prove that it’s you making the payments. You just need to remember which finger you registered with.So spending money is becoming easier all the time. And the temptation to buy more stuff increases. But it’s worth bearing in mind that earning the money in the first place will still require the same effort. Back to work then!66. A thief wouldn’t be able to buy much with a stolen wireless card because ______.A. the card doesn’t permit withdrawing money more than £30B. there’s a limit to the amount of money spent at a timeC. the wireless card must be used a few times in one-goD. a PIN number is always required before payment67. The underlined word “fraud” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “______”.A. theftB. protectionC. cheatD. prevention68. What must be done before you use biometrics for payment?A. You must prove that it’s you making the payments.B. You must have a smart phone or a watch with you.C. You must have something to read your fingers.D. You must have one of your fingers registered.69. What can be learned from this passage?A. People’s banking information is kept in a small chip.B. People can only use a wireless card to consume coffee.C. Wearable technique is the safest way to make a payment.D. A tap-and-go card needs a signature to approve payment.(B)Asia TEFL and the Far Eastern English Language Teachers’ Association 14th Asia TEFL International Conference and 11th FEELTA International Conference invite proposals for their joint conference on language teaching and learning:“Connecting Professionally on ELT in Asia:Crossing the Bridge to Excellence”to be held on 30 June – 2 July, 2019 atThe Far Eastern Federal University, Vladivostok, RussiaCALL FOR PRESENTATIONSConference DescriptionThe 14th Asia TEFL and 11th FEELTA international conference places emphasis on working towards special skills or knowledge in English Language Teaching through being connected professionally in Asia and worldwide. Scientists havefor the first time observed ripples in the fabric of space time(时空涟漪) called gravitational waves, arriving at the earthfrom a severely destructive event in the distant universe. Itconfirms a major prediction of Albert Einstein’s 1915 generaltheory of relativity and opens a unique new window onto the universe, according to a group of scientists at a press conference in Washington on Thursday.“This is truly scientific moonshot. We did it. We landed on the moon,” declared David Reitz, executive director of the LIGO Laboratory at Caltech, at the conference in the National Press Club.According to the National Science Foundation (NSF) experts, gravitational waves carry information about their dramatic origins and about the nature of gravity that cannot be obtained from elsewhere. Physicists have concluded that the detectedgravitational waves were produced during the final fraction of a second (千分之⼀秒) of the combination of two black holes to produce a single, much bigger turning black hole. This fierce shock of two black holes had been predicted but never observed by NSF.The gravitational waves were detected on Sept 14, 2019 at 5:51 am EDT by both of the twin Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors, located in Livingston, Louisiana, and Hanford, Washington.Based on the observed signals, LIGO scientists estimate that the black holes for this event were about 29 and 36 times the weight of the sun, and the event took place 1.3 billion years ago. About three times the weight of the sun was changed into gravitational waves in a fraction of a second -- with a peak power output about 50 times that of the whole visible universe. By looking at the time of arrival of the signals -- the detector in Livingston recorded the event 7 milliseconds (毫秒) before the detector in Hanford -- scientists can say that the source was located in the Southern Hemisphere, according to a press release from NSF, which funded the research. This new LIGO discovery is the first observation of gravitational waves themselves, made by measuring the tiny disturbances the waves make to space and time as they pass through the earth. “Our observation of gravitational waves accomplishes an ambitious goal set out over five decades ago to directly detect this puzzling phenomenon and better understand the universe, and, properly, fulfills Einstein’s prediction on the 100th anniversary of his general theory of relativity,” Reitze said.74. By saying “This is truly scientific moonshot. We did it. We landed on the moon,” what does D avid Reitzmean?A. We humans truly landed on the moon this time.B. The theory of relativity was not proved until today.C. Gravitational waves arrived at the earth in the end.D. Scientists successfully observed gravitational waves.75. What do NSF experts talk about in the third paragraph?A. Gravitational waves carry information about the origins of nature.B. The nature of gravity cannot be obtained from gravitational waves.C. The combination of two black holes can produce a single, much bigger turning black hole.D. Gravitational waves only appear at the final fraction of a second of the shock of two black holes.76. According to the observed signals, LIGO scientists find out that ______.A. the two black holes which brought about this event were much bigger than the sunB. about three times the weight of the sun became gravitational waves in this eventC. the event produced by the observed signals took place 1.3 billion years agoD. the peak power output was about 50 times that of the whole universe77. From this passage, a conclusion can be drawn that ______.A. gravitational waves can make disturbances to space and timeB. Einstein predicted the observed gravitational waves in the universeC. gravitational waves is not a puzzling phenomenon to the world any moreD. this new LIGO discovery was made to test the general theory of relativitySection CDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declaredthe spread of mosquito-born Zika virus a global publichealth emergency. On Monday, the global health agencyheld an emergency meeting in Geneva after warning thepublic that Zika is spreading “explosively” acros s theAmericas. Dr. Margaret Chan, the director-general of theWHO, said after the meeting that the cases of microcephaly, which is a birth disease in which babies are born with verysmall heads and underdeveloped brains, in regions withZika cases, “become an extraordinary event and a public health threat to other parts of the world.”Last week, health officials confirmed one case of the virus in Denmark, five in Great Britain, three cases in the United States and 18 in its territory of Puerto Rico. The global health organization also predicts that Zika could infect as many as four million people in the Americas this year. The symptoms from the virus are minor. The symptoms are flu-like and include a rash (⽪疹). But the results for some infected with Zika -- namely pregnant women -- are destructive. The WHO suspects the virus may have something to do with brain disorders in babies. Health experts highly suspect there may be a link between the illness and microcephaly. However, a definite link between Zika and microcephaly has not been proven.World Health Organization spokesman Gregory Hartl has this to say, “So, one of the curiosities is why we have so many neurological (神经学的) cases in the northeast of Brazil, but we have not had it in other places. So, we really need to understand what is existing that causes these microcephaly cases, for example, in children.”Hartl does not agree with claims that the Zika virus could lead to a threat similar to that of Ebola (埃博拉病毒). He says that Ebola is transmitted by contact with bodily fluids (体液) from person to person and kills about 50 percent of its victims. “Zika has never killed a person and it is transmitted by the mosquito. So, we know that there are those two basic differences at least. Let us say that Zika on its own would not be the consideration of an emergency committee. What is the concern to the international community is the possible link with neurological disorders.”(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS)78. The cases of microcephaly are generally seen in the places ______.79. Who should pay special attention to the infection of the virus to avoid its terrible result?80. What puzzles the health experts about the cases of microcephaly?81. What causes the global concern is that the mosquito-born Zika virus may ______.第II卷(共47分)I. Although many brand names are simple acronyms(首字母缩略词) or versions of their founders names, some of the companies we trust every day actually have fascinating and surprising back stories.StarbucksIt seems fitting that the most famous coffee brand in the world would take its name from one of the world’s greatest works of literature. The inspiration for the name of the coffeehouse came from Herman Melville’sMoby Dick. The founders’ original idea was to name the company after the Captain Ahab’s ship, but they eventually decided that Pequot wasn’t a great name for coffee, so they chose Ahab’s first mate, Starbucks, as the name instead.GoogleGoogle was originally called Backrub, for it searched for links in every corner of the Web. In 1997, when the founders of the company were searching for a new name showing a huge amount of data for their rapidly improving search technology, a friend suggested the word “googol”. When a friend tried to register the new domain (域) name, he misspelled “googol” as “google”.NikeOriginally founded as a distributor for Japanese running shoes, the company was originally named BRS, or Blue Ribbon Sports. In 1971, BRS introduced its own soccer shoe, a model called Nike, which is alsothe name for the Greek goddess of victory. In 1978, the company officially renamed itself as Nike, Inc.The right name is essential to a company’s success, and a great origin story is just as important as a great product. Following the proposal, merchants are asked to offer guidance for consumers, including reminding them during the ordering process about the taste of the ingredients, portion sizes and other information about the dishes, to helpthem avoid excessive ordering and food waste.Catering(餐饮)associations in more than 18 provinces have also joined the campaign to remove food waste. The Wuhan Catering Association proposed an “NT" ordering code for restaurants in which a group of 10 diners would only order enough for nine people. More food is only brought to the table if required. On Friday, the China Cuisine Association announced that it had teamed up with Ele. me, the Alibaba Group Holding-owned food delivery platform, to launch a "half-dish plan," encouraging restaurants to provide customers with the option to order smaller portions.Tang Zhisong, a professor at Southwest University Education School, said "Evaluating how much you can eat, how much you should buy and how to deal with the leftover is a way for young people to improve their self-management. They were travelling on anearly deserted two-lane highway when Betty noticed a steady light in the sky that was getting bigger and brighter. She thought it was a planet or a star. Barney, stimulated at her excitement, said it was probably just a wandering aeroplane. Whatever it was, it appeared to be following them. They stopped their car for a closer look. What they said happened next, changed their lives. The flying object was noiseless. It appeared to be spinning. It was as big as a jet but shaped like a pancake. So formed the tale of Betty Hill, a New Hampshire social worker who, with Barney, a postal worker, claimed to be kidnapped by aliens, who were from outer space, on a moonlit night about 60 years ago. After reluctantly going public with her experience, Hill, who died of cancer at her New Hampshire home, aged 85, became a celebrity on the UFO circuit and was known as the “first lady of UFOs”.Intriguingly, at the time of the incident, the Hills remembered nothing except that they had spied a strange object in the sky. Later, troubled by nightmares and other stress-related pains, the couple underwenthypnosis(催眠) where the full story came out with the aid of Boston psychiatrist Benjamin Simon, an expert in medical hypnosis. On their night of contact the Hills arrived homeat 5 a.m., unable to account for two lost hours. They were also confused by the odd marks on their telescopes, deep signs on the tops of Barney’s best shoes, Betty’s torn dressand strange circular markings on their car that made the needle of a compass jump wildly. After seeing them for six months, the psychiatrist concluded the Hills’ lost memory about the hours they lost on that night in 1961 “appeared to involve an amazing experience on the part of both of the Hills”. Whether the experience had been fantasy or reality, Simon could not say, but he said he was convinced they had not been lying. He guessed that it had been a kind of shared dream.Reports of aliens capturing humans and taking them aboard oddly shaped spacecraft were “comparatively rare” before 1975. After a movie, “The UFO Incident”, about the Hills came out, however, such stories increased.8. When they saw the strange object in the sky, Barney and Betty Hill ______________.A. were astonished at its strange flight and noiseB. regarded it as just a wandering car following themC. realized immediately what the danger it might causeD. showed curiosity in discovering what it really was9. That is what a new report from the World Economic Forum and Ellen MacArthur Foundation warns. If the current trend continues, the report said, oceans will contain one ton of plastic for every three tons of fish in 2025. By 2050, plastics will weigh more than fish. The problem is that each year at least 8 million tons of plastics end up in oceans around the world. This is the same as dumping the contents of one garbage truck into the ocean every minute. Not all plastic ends up in the ocean because someone throws a plastic bottle into the water. Plastic containers and other trash thrown onto streets and sidewalks often are swept into oceans. Unlike other types of trash in theocean, the plastic never bio-degrades. There is a way to slow the amount of plastics going into the oceans — people can recycle more. Currently only about 14 percent of plastics are recycled. Research in Europe shows as much as 53 percent of plastic could be recycled using available technology. The report says that another solution is using less plastic for packaging products. But that is not likely to happen.“Given plastic packaging’s many benefits, both the possibility and desirability of an across-the-board dramatic reduction in the volume of plastic packaging used is clearly low, ”the report said. But the authors note reducing the use of plastics should be tried“where possible. ”For decades, scientists warned that plastics are killing fish. Research shows that fish are dying from choking after eating plastics. Another cause of death is that plastics cause“intestinal blockage and starvation, ”the environmental group said.12. Why is the garbage truck mentioned in Paragraph 1 ?A. To explain how plastics end up in the ocean.B. To warn people against the ocean pollution.C. To clarify the seriousness of the problem.D. To point out some details of the report.13. Why is plastic more dangerous than other types of trash?A. There is too much of it.B. It poisons the ocean water.C. It is from different sources.D. It is hard to break down.14. What is the author’s attitude to the suggested solutions?A. Pessimistic.B. Curious.C. Unconcerned.D. Terrified.15. What can we infer from the text?A. People are not aware of the problem.B. Recycling is limited by lack of technology.C. Plastic packaging has become part of our life.D. Fish in the ocean will be replaced by plastics.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

But there's also a condition known as subthreshold depression in which someone some symptoms of depressive disorder, but not enough for a clinical diagnosis. It's estimated that between 10% and 24% of the population has this kind of mild depression at some point in their lives. And for those people, a new study suggests that practicing thinking in silence may help improve their mood and reduce their risk of developing depression. The study, published in the Annals of Family Medicine, yet another reason why deep thinking may be good for both physical and mental health. The study included 231 Chinese adults with subthreshold depression, meaning theirbetween five and nine out of a total of 27 points on a standard depression . Half received mindfulness training two hours a week for eight weeks, while the other half continued to receive their usual medical care.During the mindfulness training, participants were instructed on setting short-and long-term goals; their activity and mood; planning out their activities; and body scanning. They were asked to practice them at home at least six days a week. These techniques combine traditional deep thinking with activation, a type of therapy that uses an "outside in" approach to help people change the way they act and aims to increase rewarding experiences in their lives. It has been shown to be effective for moderate to severe depression in other studies, and the researchers wanted to know if it would work as a measure as well.At the end of those eight weeks, the group that received mindfulness training reported a significant decrease in depression and symptoms compared to the group that did not. And no participants had developed clinical depression.二、Reading Comprehension (共1题;共15分)3.(15分)完形填空Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Shelby, the star of "A Dog's Way Home," has a hard-luck tale that could top them all. Before her big break, she was living in a landfill, rooting through garbage for her next meal.Shelby's big break came in April 2017, when animal-control officer Megan Buhler was driving in Cheatham County. Tennessee. Out on an unrelated call, Buhler spotted and approached what she recalled was a noticeably scared puppy emerging from the dump. "I knelt down and just said, ‘Oh, come here, baby,'" said Buhler. "She was so scared, but she came right up to me, and I was able to put her in my truck." The pair headed to the county animal shelter, where the staff began calling the new resident Baby Girl.Buhler and others didn't know that 3,200 kilometers away, Hollywood was looking for a dog to play Bella in a film written by Cathryn Michon. The find-a-Bella job went to freelance trainer Teresa Ann Miler. Her mission was to search shelters nationwide for a dog that could play Bella. One day, Miller spotted Baby Girl's adoption photo. "Honestly, it was a really good picture, and she was flat - out smiling," Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her on personality and the ability to respond to simple commands. After assessment, she adopted Baby Girl from the shelter, renamed her Shelby and took her to California for training. Miller and Shelby trained for just over three months before filming began. Then they were together each day on the set. Most of the film's reviews have praised Shelby's performance. Variety made the comments "an amazing dog, perfect performance!"Shelby has come a long way from the dump. If you're having trouble holding yourself accountable, pair up with a fellow classmate. By being organized and self-aware, you can get the most from your online class.⒉Practice time management. The flexibility to create your own schedule is often one of the biggest appeals of taking online classes. But that freedom can also be detrimental if you do not have solid time management skills. Without them, you might find yourself cramming before classes or handing in poor-quality assignments.Make note of major assignments. Mark them on a calendar you check regularly so you know what workload is coming in the weeks ahead.Create a weekly schedule that you follow, designating certain hours each week to reading, watching lectures, completing assignments, studying, and participating in forums. When working on your assignments, try time-blocking, distributing yourself a certain amount of time for each task before moving on to the next one and setting a timer to keep you accountable.⒊Eliminate distractionsRegardless of where you choose to work, consider turning your cell phone off to avoid losing focus every time a text message or notification pops up. And if you're still having trouble resisting the temptation to check your email or surf the web, try downloading a website blocker. Using applications like Cold Turkey and Freedom can help eliminate distractions by blocking the apps or websites that tend to complete for your attention, such as Facebook and Twitter.Online classes are an excellent option to help you earn that degree you need to fulfill your goals such as job promotion. Though they come with their own unique challenges, following the advice above can help you be successful even in the most chaotic of times.(1)(2分)Which of the following ways keeps you from holding yourself accountable?A.Surfing websites that complete for your attention.B.Writing down schedules regularly on a calender.C.Setting a timer for the task being completed.D.Finding a classmate for mutual supervision.(2)(2分)How can you eliminate distractions when having online classes?A.By ignoring notification that pops up.B.By downloading a website blocker.C.By avoiding losing focus.D.By trying time-blocking.(3)(2分)It can be inferred from the passage that __________.A.a website blocker is used for effectively filtering useless websitesB.making note of assignments helps you figure out what workload comes firstC.weekly schedule involves designating certain hours to different daily routinesD.time management skills help you optimize the flexibility to create your schedule6.(8分)阅读理解The poet Lovelle Drachman once said, "blessed are the curious, for they shall have adventures.", which is certainly true of people with wanderlust.‘Wanderlust' is derived from a German word meaning 'a love of hiking' and now used to describe the burning desire to escape the everyday and explore the unfamiliar. Wanderlust is a common, but not universal experience. What makes some people catch that travel bug while others are apparently unaffected? One theory is to do with our genes. Scientific research has identified a variant of the DRD4 gene that affects sensitivity to dopamine(多巴胺), the neuro-transmitter often released in the brain when we do something we enjoy. Actually, it's not that the 7R version of the DRD4 specifically creates a thirst for travel, but people with the 7R variant are less sensitive to that delicious dopamine hit.So simple things that bring other people pleasure, like a jog in the park or a cheeky chocolate treat, might not cut it for them, which makes those with the 7R type of the DRD4 gene more likely to be risk takers to get increased dopamine levels. That's way DRD4-7R has been called the wanderlust gene. Other researches have also linked the same 7R variant to far riskier behaviours, such as addiction and offensive behaviour. By comparison, the strong sudden desire to go travelling seems like the better end of the Theory of Evolution. But another theory looks at the psychology of living in our inter-connected human society, one in which we are constantly aware of what friends and social media influencers are doing and keep comparing ourselves to them in two distinct ways. Upwards social comparisons, comparing ourselves to those we see asmore successful than us. And downward social comparisons, comparing ourselves to those we see as worse off than us. In the age of social media, it's very easy to compare ourselves unfavourably with the idealized version. How can we compete with influencers, with their perfectly dark brown legs on neat and clean while sand, and their once in a lifetime sunsets over Machu Picchu?Whether the motivation to explore the world is genetic, psychological or something else, there are far more harmful hobbies than the desire to explore the world. Venturing outside your comfort zone, to learn about new cultures, meet people you might otherwise never have had the chance to meet, and finally, learn who you are in different situations. Sounds like a life well-lived. As the novelist Jack Kerouac said, "Because in the end, you won't remember the time you spent in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain."(1)(2分)The underlined phrase "catch that travel bug" in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to__________.A.be crazy about travelling B.be curious about travellingC.escape daily life by travelling D.experience common travelling(2)(2分)Why are people with the 7R type of the DRD4 gene more likely to have wanderlust?A.Because they are more fascinated by risks and unfamiliar things.B.Because the 7R variant cause them to be less sensitive do dopamine hit.C.Because they have comparatively higher level of dopamine than other people.D.Because the 7R variant, also called wanderlust gene, helps create a craving for travelling.(3)(2分)The author will probably agree to the statement that __________A.a well-lived life doesn't involve venturing outside comfortable zoneB.the 7R variant is inevitably linked with some more risky behavior such as addictionC.people tend to forget their daily routine, but adventures really leave footprints in their heartsD.when people compare themselves with less successful ones, it may give rise to mixed feelings(4)(2分)What does the passage mainly talk about?A.Wanderlust and its two main categories.B.A less harmful hobby and analysis of its different cause.C.The distinctions between gene variants and social comparisons.D.Physical and psychological reasons for the desire to explore the world.7.(4分)Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in thebox. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.Instructor-centered or Learner-centered?Whether in the East or West, the chief business of traditional education is to pass to the next generation the skills, facts, and standards of moral and social conduct that adults consider to be necessary for the next generation's material and social success. The students work individually on assignments, and cooperation is discouraged. The result of this emphasis on what instructors do is that students may become passive learned and do not take responsibility for their own learning. Educators call this traditional method "instructor-centered teaching".In contrast, "learner - centered teaching" occurs when instructors focus on student learning. It is an approach to teaching that is increasingly being encouraged in higher education. These methods include active learning, in which students solve problems, answer questions, formulate questions of their own, discuss, explain, debate, or brainstorm during class; cooperative learning, in which students work in teams on problems and projects under conditions that assure both positive interdependence and individual account ability; and inductive(归纳法)teaching and learning, in which students are first presented with challenges and learn the couse material in the context of addressing the challenges.Although learner-centered methods have repeatedly been shown to be superior to the traditional teacher-centered approach to instruction, the best teaching, according to Parker Plamer, the author of The Courage to Teach, is not one or the other, but a combination of both.Learner-centerd teachers still need to lecture because teachers are the definitive content experts in the classroom and the knowledge and experiences of teachers can be extremely helpful to students. They must recognize that students can learn from each other and that the deepest learning happens when students have the opportunity to practice and obtain feedback.四、Summary Writing (共1题;共5分)8.(5分)Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.Coco-Cola's Innovative Solution to Plastic PollutionPlastic pollution has become one of the most pressing problem of the 21st Century with plastic waste almost everywhere. It is estimated that just in 2016, the world produced over 320 million tons of plastic, and this number is set to double by 2034.Plastic waste even makes its way into our oceans with 8 million pieces of plastic pollution per day polluting our waters and destroying the habitat for hundreds of species. It is now believed that there may be around 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean weighing in total up to 269,000 tons. It's been crystal clear for a long time that the situation is horrible and something needs to be done, and fast. Luckily, Coca-Cola stepped up to the challenge and came up with one innovative and rather effective solution. The firm is replacing its plastic wrapping in Europe with a new paper board technology. This new tech is called the KeelClip and it is a first for the non-alcohol ready-to-drink (NARTD) industry. Using KeelClips, Coca-Cola aims to remove all plastic wrap from its can multipacks in all? European Union markets by the end of 2021. The firm is optimistic that the move will save 2,000 tons of plastic and 3,000 tons of CO2 annually."Innovation is a key principle of our sustainable packaging work and the application of this fully recyclable paperboard KeelClipTM, which is composed of a top board that the cans clip into and central cardboard 'keel' -- similar to a ship's keel - that stabilizes the pack, is another example of how we are delivering on our commitment to remove all unnecessary and hard to recycle single-use plastic from our products. We hope this eco-friendly initative is a conscious approach to dealing with plastic pollution," said Joe Franses, Vice President, Sustainability at Coca-Cola European Partners.五、Translation (共4题;共20分)9.(5分)用过的人大都说这种钢笔书写流利。

And now he hopes to use it for more than just his sons hope after seeing the childrens reaction to the Batmobile.Based on the number of failures he had seen in car groups, he estimated that only about one in 50 attempted constructions was actually finished and he realized what an incredible opportunity he had.Mr. Blackburn started the project at the beginning of 2018 after hearing a friend in the US was doing the same thing. It started with importing an outer shell overseas, before picking brains of a friend who had a background as a worker in a car factory to gain knowledge of how to build the car. With the help of his friend, Mr. Blackburn built the Batmobile in 18 months with the cost reaching six figures.Mr.Blackburn hoped to add a flamethrower(喷火器)onto the back of the vehicle and said he had thought about building the more recent Batman Tumbler from the series film Dark Knight. Though Mr. Blackburn encountered plenty of difficulties to get over during the construction, in September 2019, the carmade its first show at the Carnival of Flowers in Toowoomba, before being used by Blackburn’s son for his hope.“It was great. It was so good to see the kids’ and adults’ excitement at seeing the Batmobile.” Mr. Blackburn said. As a result, the car lovers hope to make the car work on the roads as soon as possible, so he can visit sick children and take them out with his son.8. It will appear in the next film about Batman.DThe regular world presented to us by our five senses — you could call it reality 1.0 — is not always the most user-friendly. We get lost in unfamiliar cities; we meet people whose language we don’t understand. So why not try the improved version: augmented reality(AR)or reality 2.0 ? AR technology adds computer-produced images on the real world via a mobile phone camera or special video glasses.Early forms of AR are already here — smart phones can deliver information about nearby ATMs and restaurants and other points of interest. But that’s just the beginning. A few years from now the quantity of information available will have increased hugely. You will not only see that there’s a Chinese restaurant on the next block, but you will be able to see the menu and read reviews of it.This is where the next revolution in computing will take place: in the interface(界面)between the real world and the information brought to us via the Internet. Imagine bubbles floating before your eyes, filled with cool information about anything and everything that you see in front of you.Let’s jump ahead to ten years from now. A person trying to fix a car won’t be reading a book with pictures; he will be wearing a device that projects animated 3D computer graphics onto the equipment under repair, labelling parts and giving step-by-step guidance. The window onto the AR world can be a smart phone or special video glasses. But in ten years’ time thesewill have been replaced by contact lenses(隐形眼镜) with tiny LEDs, which present something at a readable distance in front of eyes. So a deaf person wearing these lenses will be able to see what people are saying. The question is, while we are all absorbed in our new augmented reality world, how willwe be communicating with each other?12. What is the text mainly about?A. The relationship between reality 1.0 and reality 2.0.B. Different forms of the AR technology.C. The next information technology revolution.D. To offer information efficiently.D. To communicate with others socially.14. What are Contact lenses with tiny LEDs used for?A. Show texts and images.B. Protect people’s eyes.C. Help deaf people communicate.D. Replace smart phone.15. What’s the author’s attitude towards the AR technology?A. Indifferent.B. Critical.C. Concerned.D. Do you want to come over?W: Actually, I have a ticket. But I’m not feeling well. You can have it for what it cost me.Q: What can be learned from the conversation?9. M: Mrs. Wright, I’m afraid you have to find another student to play this role, because the lines are so long that I simply can’t remember them all.W: Look, Jimmy. It’s still a long time before the first show. I don’t expect you to know all the lines yet. Just keep practicing.Q: What can be learned from the conversation?10.M: Doctor, I haven’t been able to get enough sleep lately, and I’m too tired to concentrate in class.W: Well, you know, spending too much time indoors with all that artificial lighting can do harm to you. Your body loses track of whether it’s day or night.Q: What does the woman mean?Section BDirections:In Section B, you will hear two short passages and one longer conversation, and you will be asked several questions on each of the passages and the conversation. The passages and the conversation will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.Being an employee at a company has many challenges but most of us want a decent financial reward. But when that’s not enough, we have to do the hardest thing in the world -- ask our boss for a pay rise!In some companies, a regular annual pay rise is quite common -- all staff get a fixed increase. In other firms, some workers might get a bonus to reward them for their efforts or for meeting a target. But for some people, a pay increase is something you have to ask for -- and if you don’t ask, you don’t get! It’s not something we should fear “asking for”. No one ever got fired for asking for a pay rise. In fact, rather the opposite -- asking for more money shows ambition and shows you want to stay with the company. You need to do your research and find out what kind of pay your job should be getting, perhaps by talking to your Human Resources department. You’ll need to give good reasons for wanting more money and you’ll still have to keep your increase within your pay grade. Ask for an exact sum and be prepared for some negotiation. Of course, if you can’t get more cash, then there is something else you could ask for, such as flexible working or more time off. But if that gets you nowhere and your boss won’t change his opinion, maybe it’s time to quit and find a new job!(Now listen again, please.)Questions:11. Which of the following is considered as a common way to get a pay rise?12. What’s the possible reason why you won’t lose your job by asking for a pay rise?13. What does the writer suggest if you can’t get the money asked for?Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage. There are perhaps people who assume that because the Arctic and Antarctic are both polar regions, although at opposite ends of the globe, they must be similar in most respects. But there are, in fact, a good many differences between the Arctic and Antarctic, and each contributes to the geological and biological diversity of the planet. The most obvious difference is that the Antarctic is a continent surrounded by an ocean, while the Arctic is an ocean basin surrounded by the northern parts of Europe, Asia, and North America, which almost circle the Arctic sea. In addition, conditions in the Antarctic are usually more severe. It is thecoldest, and perhaps the windiest, continent on Earth. The South Pole is covered by freshwater ice over a rock surface. In contrast, the North Pole is covered in sea ice floating on salt water, with the average temperature of the water being above freezing. There are also major differences in the type of plants of the two regions. In order to find vegetation in the Antarctic in any way comparable to that found on the Arctic, one would have to go north to the sub-Antarctic islands. This obviously affects the distribution of animals. With the exception of animals introduced by humans, all animals in the Antarctic are marine or live on marine creatures. Although there are relatively fewer species of marine creatures in the Antarctic than the Arctic, the actual numbers are larger in the Antarctic.(Now listen again, please.)Questions:14. What do we know about the Arctic and Antarctic?15. Which factor leads to the difference of animals in the Arctic and Antarctic?16. What does this passage mainly talk about?Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.W: Good evening, Dr. Snider. Welcome to this week’s New Discoveries.M: Good evening, Mrs. Joy. What’s the topic today?W: Doctor Snider, you are a psychologist, so, can you tell us your new findings of hope?M: Hope plays a surprisingly vital role in giving people a measurable advantage in various aspects such as academic achievement, bearing up in tough jobs and coping with tragic illness.W: Then what happens to a person without hope?M: The loss of hope is turning out to be a stronger sign that a person may commit suicide than other factors long thought to be more likely risks.W: Thanks. Dr. Snider, can we say that hope is a powerful predictor of outcome?M: Exactly. In research with 3920 college students, our team has found that the level of hope among freshmen at the beginning of their first semester was a more accurate predictor of their college grades than were their SAT scores or their grade point averages in high school.W: We know these two are commonly used to predict students’ college performances.M: Yes, that’s true. But when you compare students of equivalent intelligence and past academicachievements, what sets them apart is hope. We believe it is because students with high hope set themselves higher goals and know how to work to achieve them.W: That’s really impressive. People usually hold the opinion that hope is merely the sense that everything will turn out all right. Do you agree?M: That is not concrete enough. Having hopes means believing you have both the will and the way to accomplish your goals whatever they may be.W: Thank you very much. Hope that each of us is hopeful.M: That’s really a good hope. Goodbye.(Now listen again, please.)Questions:17. What may happen to a person who loses hope?18. What does the sentence “that hope is a powerful predictor of outcome” mean?19. Why do those with high level of hope perform better in university?20. What should people do to maintain hope?(That’s the end of listening.

AMy Biggest ChallengeAs a writer on an adventure sports magazine, I’dalways fought shy of doing the adventurous stuff myself, preferring instead to observe the experts from a safe distance and relay their experiences to readers in the form of written language. Thus, when I was challenged to take part in a mountain climb in aid of raising money for charity-and to write about it afterwards-I was unwilling, to say the least.I was lucky enough to have a brilliant climbing coach called Keith, who put me through my paces after my daily work. He gave me knowledge about everything from the importance of building muscle groups to how to avoid tiredness through nutrition. It quickly became apparent that the mechanics of climbing were more complex than I had imagined. There was the equipment and techniques I’d never even heard of, all of which would come in handy on the snow-capped peak I’d be climbing.Aware of the challenge, Keith made a detailed action plan and I forced myself to stick to it, doing a daily workout at the gym and going on hikes with a heavy pack. I perfected my technique on the climbing wall and even went to climb the mountains to get vital experience. My self-belief increased alongside my muscle power and I became confident about finishing the climb. All too soon I was on a plane to my destination. On that day, when I looked up at the mountain, I thought of abandoning it. But then I remembered all the hard work I’d done and how disappointed Keith would be if I gave up at the last minute-not to mention letting down the charity and the sense of failure I’d experience myself. With a deep breath I gathered my equipment and headed out into the sunshine to meet the rest of the group. And as I sit here now, tapping away on my laptop, I’m amazed at the details in which I can recall every second of the climb: the burning muscles, the tiredness, the minor problems along the way. Could I have been better prepared? Possibly. Would I be back for another go? Thankfully not. The feeling of being excited when I stood on top of the world is a never-to-be-repeated experience but one I will enjoy forever nevertheless.1. He walks down the hall toward the office to sign in. It’s the same routine he’s had as Jenner’s art teacher for nearly a quarter century. “It’s going to be a good day,” a colleague calls out. “It’s a good day.” They hug. It seems like a typical Friday. Except it’s not. After 23 years at Jenner Elementary, Schergen is retiring. Even on his last day, there are still art projects to finish.Schergen leaves behind a richlegacyat this school. He’s won grants (拨款) for art projects. He turned an empty classroom into a museum. He’s pushed his students to make art about their lives. And he was awarded a Golden Apple — the most honorable teaching award in Chicago. But it wasn’t always easy. For years, Schergen taught in one of the city’s toughest neighborhoods. “When I first got my room, I noticed there were bullet holes in the window. That made me nervous,” he says. So he stuffed Beanie Babies in the holes to make it “look kind of funny”. “I didn’t even tell my wife for a whole year,” he says. “I didn’t want her to know.”With one hour to go, Schergen piles the chairs and sweeps the floor. He cleans out the sink for the last time.Fifth-grader Deontae Barnes, one of his best helpers, has watched him say goodbye all day. He wanders in the doorway. “Ah, come here, son,” Schergen says, signaling him over. He bends down for a hug. “Thank you for making these last days special and being a help to me.”When Deontae leaves, a reporter asks Schergen: When your kids ask why you’re retiring, what do you tell them? “I just tell them that grown people have dreams too,” he says. “I have other things in my life I have to do. Students’ poor academic performance.11. What is the best title for the text?A.A Typical Day for an Art TeacherB. Time for Art ProjectsC. A Teacher’s Final Day at SchoolD. The Last Art ClassDMy wife and I recently completed a day-long tour of the Great Wall with Jessie. In addition to being very knowledgeable about the history of theareas that we toured, she spoke excellent English and was able to answer all of our questions. Her driver was very experienced and polite, and we really enjoyed being able to have a customized tour that avoided the tourist traps and forced shopping that seem to be a part of the larger group tours. The attractions themselves were fantastic. I was a little worried that the snowy weather might impact our trip to the Great Wall, but everything went fine, and there weren’t many people out at all that day. I suggest wearing strong shoes—the Great Wall is really a hike. And in snowy or rainy days, the surfaces are pretty slippery (滑的)! Seeing this area in winter was really unique, and the snow made for great pictures. Jessie kept us entertained with stories and facts about the construction of the Wall, and always pointed out great spots for taking pictures. Even though she’s in fantastic shape, she cared about our level of fitness and often stopped to let us catch our breath. When we got back to our hotel, Jessie gave us a great recommendation for dinner and some tips for our planned stops the next day. If I find myself in Beijing in the future, I will certainly be contacting Jessie for more tour opportunities, and I’ve already recommended her to some friends who are visiting the area later in the year. I can’t say enough about how kind and knowledgeable she was, and she really gave us a great tour experience.12. What can we infer about Jessie?A. She is a tour advisor.B. She is a tour guide.C. She is a foreign traveler.D. She is a skilled driver.13. When did the writer visit the Great Wall?A. In spring.B. In summer.C. In autumn.D. In winter.14. What did the writer think of his tour?A. Adventurous.B. Disappointing.C. Satisfactory.D. Improvable.15. What is the probable title for the text?A. A Wonderful Tour Day with JessieB. An Extraordinary Tour CompanyC. The Great Wall, an Excellent AttractionD. Jessie, a Kind and Knowledgeable Guide第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

One of the best examples of this practice is the business lunch. Therefore, knowing how to conduct yourself at a business lunch is often just as important as the business discussion. For formal business lunches, it is wise to phone at least 24 hours ahead to reserve a table at a restaurant. After you have been seated and given a menu, your waiter will come and ask if you would like to order anything to drink. Nowadays, it is quite acceptable to order mineral water, a soda, or fruit juice, apart from wine or a mixed drink. After that, your waiter will leave you to make your food selection from the menu you have been given. It is the host’s responsibility to discover whether or not his guests have any special dietary restrictions. If, however, a host does not do that, a guest should not announce his dietary restrictions to everyone at the table. Instead, he should ask the waiter about the ingredients of any dish in question. He should also have in mind a second dish that he might order, just in case. Usually, the host will allow his guests to order first. Occasionally, a host may collect orders in advance in order to save time.Questions:11. Which of the following is recommended for a formal business lunch according to the passage?12. After being seated and given the menu, what are you supposed to order first?13. What should you do if you’ve got any dietary restrictions?Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following conversation.M: Excuse me, I received a letter that I should return the book I checked out back in September. It’s called Modern Social Problems. But I am writing my paper, so I thought I was allowed to keep the book for the whole academic year.W: So you signed up for extended borrowing duration?M: Yeah.W: And we are still asking you to bring the book back?M: Uh-huh. Do I really have to?W: Well, let me check the computer. The title was …Modern Social Problems?M: Yeah.W: Eh…it’s been recalled. You can keep it all year round as long as no one else requests it, but someone else has, it looks like one of the professors in the sociology department. So you have to bring it back. You can check it out again when it is returned in a couple of weeks.M: What if the professor renews it? And I really need it right now.W: All of it? Or is there a certain section or chapter you are working with?M: Eh…, there’s one chapter in particular I am working with.W: Well, we normally don’t do this, but because of the circumstances we can photocopy up to one chapter for you.So, why not do that for the chapter you are working with right now? And by the time you need the rest of the book, maybe it’ll have been returned.M: Oh, that would be great. Thank you!Questions:14.How long did the man think he could keep the book?15.Which of the following statements is True according to the conversation?16.What does the woman suggest that the man should do?Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.M: This is it. I know that it is smaller than you wanted, but it is one of the nicest apartments in the buildings.W: Does it have three bedrooms?M: No. There are two. But the master bedroom is quite large. Maybe you could let the children share the larger room, and you and your husband could use the smaller one.W: I suppose I could do that.M: A three-bedroom apartment will be difficult to find.W: Yes, I know. Actually, the few three-bedroom apartments that I have found are either extremely expensive or the owner won’t like a family with children.M: Well. The owner allows two children in this apartment.W: Aren’t you the owner?M: No, I am the manager. My office is on the first floor of this building.W: Oh. That’s nice. Then if anything gets broken…M: Just leave a note on my door.W: You said that the rent would be 350 dollars a month. Does that include something?M: Yes, it includes gas. Your stove is gas, so, as you can imagine, your other expenses, such as electric and water, are quite inexpensive.W: This sounds great. But before I sign a contract, I would like my husband to see it.M: Why not stop by with him this evening?W: How late are you in your office? He usually doesn’t get off work until 5 p.m..M: Come by at six. I will still be there. I am sure that you are eager to move from the hotel, and if we have paper work out of the way tonight, you can move in tomorrow.W: That sounds perfect!Questions:17. Who is the man in this conversation?18. Where is the woman living now?19. Which of the following is Not True about the apartment?20. Why didn’t the woman sign a contract right away?2、2019普陀二模I. The passages and the conversation will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.Hello! Today I am going to talk about poverty, a critica l issue in today’s world. One useful way to understand poverty is to distinguish between three degrees of poverty. The first type of poverty is extreme poverty. In extreme poverty, households cannot meet basic needs for survival. People suffer from long-term hunger. They have no access to safe drinking water, let alone health care. They cannot afford education for their children. In short, people who live in extreme poverty do not have even the minimum resources to support themselves and their families. Then, where does extreme poverty occur? Well, you can find it only in developing countries.Well, what about moderate poverty? Unlike extreme poverty, moderate poverty generally refers to rarely meeting the basic needs of life condition. People living in moderate poverty have the resources to keep themselves alive, but only at a very basic level. For example, they may have access to drinking water but not clean, safe drinking water. They may have a home to shelter themselves but it does not have power supply, or a telephone. The third kind of poverty is relative poverty. Relative povertyis generally considered to be a household income level which is below a given proportion of average family income. The relatively poor live in high income countries but they do not have a high income themselves. The methods of calculating the poverty line vary from country to country, but we can say that basically the income of a family living in relative poverty is less than that of the average family. They can meet their basic needs but they lack access to cultural goods, and entertainment. They also do not have access to quality health care.We should keep these distinctions in mind when we research people’s living conditions either in the developing or the developed world.(Now listen again, please.)Questions:11. Where does the speaker say we can find extreme poverty?12. Which of the following features can be seen in relative poverty?13. What does the speaker mainly talk about?Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.Like many other people, I love my smartphone, which keeps me connected with the larger world. I also love my laptop, because it holds all of my writing and thoughts. However, I know there are times when I need to move away from these devices and truly communicate with others. On occasion, I teach a course called History Matters to a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the materials and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule — no laptop, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule inadvance of the class, some of them were not happy. Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. Some students assum e that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth in that at all. The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas.I’ve been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course materials beyond the classroom.(Now listen again, please.)Questions:14. Why were some of the students in the history class unhappy?15. What can be learned from this passage?16. What can be inferred from the passage about the use of technology in classrooms?Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.W:Here’s your cup of coffee, Bob.M: Thanks! But what took you so long, Catherine?W: Sorry, Bob. I bumped into somebody I knew in the cafe and stopped for a chat.M:OK, well. Catherine, did you know that coffee houses wereoriginally a meeting place for lively debates and intellectual discussions?W:Really? I didn’t know that, Bob. So how long ago was this debating society formed?M:The first coffee house was set up in Oxford in 1650. But they quickly became popular and soon they were all over London too. You paid a penny to get in, and this included access to newspapers—and stimulating conversation!W:But I have to say, while I was getting our coffees earlier, there was nobody else in the cafe talking except me and my friend. Everybody was sitting on their own, tapping away on their laptops. So the spirit of those 17th century coffee houses has disappeared then? No more lively debates and intellectual discussions?M:It seems so. As Douglas Fraser, BBC Business and Economy Editor says, the coffee shop’s free Wi-Fi is transporting its customers to different destinations far from the person beside them. As you can see, so many people sit along plugged into their laptops—and they’re all doing different things—working, writing, messing about on social media.W: I think the cafe owners should turn off the free Wi-Fi. I don’t think people should be allowed to sit all day using the Internet—occupying tables—and not talking to anybody! Especially when some of them don’t even buy a coffee!M:That’s a bit extreme, C atherine. Cafe owners need customers—and they encourage people to stay by having comfortable sofas and newspapers to read and the free Wi-Fi!W:I suppose you’re right.(Now listen again, please.)Questions:17. Why did it take Catherine a long time to bring back the coffee?18. What can be learned about the earlier coffee house from this conversation?19. What does Bob think of the idea of turning off the Wi-Fi?20. How do the cafe owners attract customers?(That’s the end of listening. 听力部分到此结束,请同学们继续答题。
