Development of China non-ferrous metal industry
1. 1949-1978 From the founding of PRC to the reform and opening-up period In 1949, the output of China non-ferrous metal was merely at slightly over 10,000 tons in total. Through twists and turns, the number increased to 996,000 tons in 1978.

2. 1978-1992 Stable and fast economic growth In 1992, the output of ten major non-ferrous metals came to 2.992 million tons.
3. 1992-2002 Rapid development of non-public owned economy In 2002, the output of major non-ferrous metals reached 10.12 million tons, overtaking the US as the biggest producer for the first time.
Non-ferrous metals include 64 kinds of metals, with the exception of iron, manganese and chrome. Hereinto, there are ten major metals, covering copper, aluminum, lead, zinc, nickel, tin, antimony, mercury, magnesium and titanium; while the commonest metals are copper, aluminum, lead and zinc, with their output accounting for above 95% of the total.

4. Since 2002 Significant improvement in comprehensive national strength So far, China’s non-ferrous metal industry has become the unique independent industry in the world. In 2013, the output and sales volumes of non-ferrous metals both broke through 40 million tons, taking a share of around 40% in global market. Among which, the revenue of non-public owned economy accounts for 70% of the total.
China non-ferrous metal industry occupies an important place in global market
On a global basis, China has held the top spot in the output and sales volume of non-ferrous metals for many years. In 2013, the output of major non-ferrous metals in China totaled 40.29 million tons, quadruple that in 2000; furthermore, it is more than double the total output of the following four large producers – Russia, the US, Canada and Australia. A range of domestic non-ferrous metal enterprises sit among the world's largest factories. In 2012, Aluminum Corporation of China ranked the first in the global output of aluminum, Jiangxi Copper Corporation took the second place in the output of copper, and China Minmetals Corporation came the third in the list of global lead and zinc output. Moreover, in 2013, the above enterprises consolidated their positions further, and there are seven Chinese non-ferrous metal companies named in the list of Fortune Global 500 companies in 2013. China non-ferrous metal industry sees a remarkable improvement in technology and equipment. China has materialized the export of technologies and complete sets of equipments in the fields of aluminum electrolysis, copper smelting and so on. To be specific, China’s aluminium electrolysis technology and equipment have reached the world advanced levels; copper and nickel producers also have mostly adopted the flash smelting-based technology with high efficiency and low pollution; Zinc and lead manufacturers similarly achieved a rapid development in technology and equipment, getting heightened attention from international counterparts.
