Ⅰ. The Economic System of the United States
1. The United States has a free-market economy with a dominant private sector.
2. However, the government has always been an important element in the American economy.
3. The American economy is characterized by a high degree of monopoly.
Ⅰ. 美国的经济体系
1. 美国经济是私有制占主导地位的自由市场经济。
2. 然而，政府一直是美国经济的一个重要元素。
3. 美国经济的特点是高度的垄断。
Ⅱ. Natural Resources
1. Fertile soil is one of the most important natural resources in the United States.
2. America’s forest resources are among the world’s largest.
3. Another natural resource that contributes to the welfare of the country is water.
4. Mineral resources of the United States are well developed. Coal, iron ore, copper, oil, sulfur, lead, and zinc are found in large quantities.

1. The United States produces nearly 50% of the corn in the world. Wheat is America’s most important food crop. Cotton is a leading commercial crop in the South.
2. The Great Plains are a great animal farming area. Dairy farming can be found in New England, the Midwest, and the Pacific Northwest. The South is one of America’s leading producers of citrus fruit.
3. American agriculture is highly mechanized and the farmers are productive.

1. The United States ranks ahead in the world in the production of commercial vehicles, chemicals, radio sets, television sets, and other manufacturing goods.
2. The Midwest is the nation’s leading centre of heavy industry. The American South is a newly developed industrial region.
3. T exas is the country’s leading state in oil and natural gas deposits. Los Angeles, the Pacific Coast’s largest and busiest commercial city is located in the heart of a rich agricultural and oil-producing region.

The United States imports about 13 % of all world imports. The principal U.S. imports are machinery and transportation equipment, meats, clothing, paper and other wood products, coffee, fruits, vegetables and fishing products.
