Accustomed though we are to speaking of the films made before 1927 as “silent”,其中的accustomed按照正常语序应该放在are之后:Though we are accustomed to speaking of the films made before 1927 as “silent”。

Fossils clearly intermediate,or transitional, between land mammals and cetaceans were missing until recently。

Missing until recently were fossils clearly intermediate,or transitional, between land mammals and cetaceans。

Herein lay the beginning of what ultimately turned from ignorance to denial of the value of nutritional therapies in medicine。

Among the species of seabirds that use the windswept cliffs of the Atlantic coast of Canada in the summer to mate, lay eggs, and rear their young are common murres,Atlantic puffins,black-legged kittiwakes, and northern gannets。

Implicit in it is an aesthetic principle as well:that the medium has certain qualities of beauty and expressiveness with which sculptors must bring own aesthetic sensibilities into harmony。

Accustomed though we are to speaking of the films made before 1927 as “silent”,the film has never been,in the full sense of the word, silent。

Slow art is art created or presented in a way that encourages unhurried viewing and deep contemplation; a work of art that unfolds over a long time.

Famous art critic Robert Hughes wrote that “We have had a gutful of fast art and fast food. What we need more of is slow art: art that holds time as a vase holds water; art that grows out of modes of perception and whose skill and doggedness make you think and feel; art that isn’t merely sensational, that doesn’t get its message across in 10 seconds, that isn’t falsely iconic, that hooks onto something deep-running in our natures.”

A number of museums now offer “slow art” tours or days that encourage visitors to take their time. Rather than check master works off a list as if on a scavenger hunt, you can make a sprawling museum digestible and personal by seeking out only those works that dovetail with your interests.

“Is it a vital interest of the state to have more anthropologists?” Rick Scott, the Floridagovernor, once asked. A leader of a prominent Internet company once told me that the firmregards admission to Harvard as a useful heuristic of talent, but a college education itself asuseless.

Parents and students themselves are acting on these principles, retreating from thehumanities. Among college graduates in 1971, there were about two business majors for eachEnglish major. Now there are seven times as many. (I was a political science major; if I weredoing it over, I’d be an economics major with a foot in the humanities.)

)
I’ve been thinking about this after reading Fareed Zakaria’s smart new book, “In Defense of aLiberal Education.” Like Zakaria, I think that the liberal arts teach critical thinking (not tomention nifty words like “heuristic”).
自从读了法里德·扎卡里亚(Fareed Zakaria)颇有见地的新书《捍卫人文教育》(In Defense of a LiberalEducation)之后,我一直

So, to answer the skeptics, here are my three reasons the humanities enrich our souls andsometimes even our pocketbooks as well.

First, liberal arts equip students with communications and interpersonal skills that are valuableand genuinely rewarded in the labor force, especially when accompanied by technical abilities.

“A broad liberal arts education is a key pathway to success in the 21st-century economy,” saysLawrence Katz, a labor economist at Harvard. Katz says that the economic return to puretechnical skills has flattened, and the highest return now goes to those who combine softskills — excellence at communicating and working with people — with technical skills.。
