Perhaps it was the __10D___ contrast with Japanese society that prompted American firms to pay more attention to women buyers.A)scale B)retailed C)generate D)extreme E)technically F)affordable G)situation H)really I)potential J)gap K)voluntary L)excessive M)insulted N)purchase O)primarilyPart Three Paragraph Information Matching Directions: In this section, you are going to read a passage with ten statements attached to it. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraphfrom which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet. Are You Superstitious?A)When was the last time you crossed your fingers or said, "Bless you" to someone who sneezed? Have you felt awful when you've broken a mirror? Do you own a rabbit's foot? Do you get the heebiejeebies on Friday the 13th? If any of the above rings a bell, then join the over 50% of the population who admit to being a bit superstitious.B)I t is very well-known that many people nowadays believe in superstitions. For example, Tuesdays are considered to be unlucky days and we expect three bad things to happen to us during such a day. Then, if it is Friday, the thirteenth, other bad happenings will wait for us. Not to forget theowl singing at night just in one of the trees we have near our house, as it will announce that maybe somebody close to us will soon die. But one of the most unlucky signs that something horrible will happen to us in the proximate future is to see a black cat crossing our way. And if that black cat passes in front of us especially before our exam in Math, then it is well-known that our test paper will be a failure.C)Some Superstitions Are Obvious:●If you dry your hands on a towel whilesomeone else is using it, you'll fight withthat person (probably before your handsare dry)●It's bad luck to leave your house with allthe doors open (but good luck for burglars) ●Never hit a child with a broom, it will makehim stupid (especially if you hit him overthe head)●It's bad luck to kick a cat (possibly for youas well as the cat)●It's bad luck to put three lamps on a table(especially if you plug them all into thesame power point)●Shoes on a bed will cause a family fight(particularly if they are muddy)D) Some Superstitions Are Surprising:●If you kiss your elbow, you'll change yoursex (cheaper than surgery)●If a girl steps over a broom lying on thefloor, she'll be a mother before she's a wife(must be a lot of brooms lying about)●If you sew on a Sunday you'll have to ripout every stitch with your nose before youcan get into heaven (I used to try somethingsimilar by telling my kids they'd have to eattheir mountain of discarded veggies beforethey got into heaven —that didn't workeither)●You must never greet the sun by speakingto it, e.g. "Hello sun", when it re-appears after being overcast, or it will go right backinto the clouds again. (No wonder it rainsso much in Ireland.)Apparently if you cross your fingers whenyou tell a lie, it doesn't count against yourcharacter. (Someone suggested that this iswhy so many politicians keep their hands intheir pockets when they speak).E)S uperstitions are activities that have no effect on events but exist because of coincidental rewards and society's prejudices. They are rooted in the philosophy that a symbolic act will bring about a physical reality. In a world where we face so many important and uncertain challenges, superstitions provide the illusion that we can somehow control our fates. We derive comfort from thinking we can either avoid an undesirable result or bring about a desired result. Superstitions reduce tension and give us a sense that what we're doing can help us out. In this way, they can be extremely useful tools.F)Even if you're not a believer, we think you'll get a kick out of some of the behaviors peoplepractice in the hope they will bring them luck. Throughout history, around the globe, strange rituals live on. In China consumers are willing to pay huge sums of money for the right phone number and will shun others. One businessman paid $20,000 for a number he liked. The worst possible combination is one ending in 547424, because in Chinese it sounds like, "I die, my wife dies, my child dies." In the Philippines, if you're taking a picture with two friends, don't stay in the middle as something bad might happen to you. Position yourself in either the left or right, or better yet add a few more people to the photo. Oh, and never take a bath on the day of your birthday... it brings bad luck. In Cuba if you leave a glass of water at your bedside overnight and there are bubbles in the glass the next morning, you are surrounded by good spirits. Women tend to be significantly more superstitious than men —or at least they admit to it in more studies — and less educated people have moresuperstitions than better educated. Being superstitious is often a family tradition. If your parents are, chances are you will be too.G)Superstitions help out with the performance anxiety that is an occupational hazard for lots of athletes. Baseball player Wade Boggs has eaten chicken before each game for over twenty years. Basketball player Michael Jordan admits he has to lace up his shoes a certain way before every game. Babe Ruth took a swat at butterflies on the diamond because he was sure they were bad luck. Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky habitually tucked the right side of his jersey(运动衫) behind his hip pads for luck before every game.H)Weddings are rich in superstitious ritual. A bride wears "something borrowed" from a previous bride who has a happy marriage; she wears "something blue" because it signifies virtue. A Chinese bride is never supposed to look in a mirror to insure there will only beone bride.I)Actors are considered to be in one of the most superstitious professions. Everyone knows you never wish an actor good luck. Instead you say, "Break a leg." By wishing someone good luck, you're supposed to give your own luck away. Real flowers, jewels, money, mirrors and coffins are considered bad luck onstage. It's good luck if an actor's shoes squeak on his entrance, or if a cat makes its home in the theater. Fear of change is usually at the heart of actors' superstitions. If he has a success on opening night, he hesitates to change anything during the run.J)S o superstitions are rooted in the profound lack of self-control we feel, especially in anxious times. Our minds create explanations for phenomena beyond our comprehension. So rub a rabbit's foot and pluck some daisies (he does love you, after all). Especially in today's world, it can't hurt!___F___ 1. In the Philippines, you are advisednot to stand in the middle whiletaking a photo with two friends, because something bad might happento you.____C__ 2. It is an obvious superstition to believe putting shoes on a bed willresult in a family fight.___A___ 3. Over half of the population admitted that they are somehow superstitious.___E___ 4. Superstitions can be very useful because they can make us lessnervous while facing uncertainchallenges.___B___ 5. According to a superstitious belief, seeing a black cat running acrossyour way is an unlucky sign.__G____ 6. Performance anxiety may be relieved by superstitions for many athletes.____D__ 7. The author holds the view that never greeting the sun is a surprisingsuperstition.___F___ 8. Illiterate women are most likely to besuperstitious.___H___ 9. In a wedding ceremony, a bride puts on something blue, which indicatesvirtue.____J__ 10. For the phenomena that we fail to comprehend, we create explanations, which become superstitions.Part Four Reading Comprehension Directions: There are 3 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and write down your answers on your Answer Sheet.Passage 1When my father died 15 years ago, my brother and I inherited the old Midwestern farmhouse our grandparents had purchased in the 1930s. I was the one who decided to make a life in this village, population 350, in northern Michigan.A job in the English department of a nearbycollege quickly followed. I settled into a small-town life, charmed by a community where your neighbors are also your friends and no one worries about locking a door. Eventually I forgot about the big-city stress of crowds, noise and crime.I was totally unprepared when I returned home one evening to an answering machine filled with horribly messages. Shocked and frightened, I called 911, and soon my would-be assailant (攻击者) was arrested, according to police, drunk, armed with a 19-inch double-edged knife and just minutes from my door.It was revealed in court testimony (证词) that he was a schizophrenic (精神分裂症患者) who had fallen through the cracks of the mental health system. In spite of my 10-year personal protection, I live with the fear that he will return unsupervised to my community. Time and again, colleagues and friends have urged me to get a gun to protect myself. But I haven’t gotten a gun, and I’m not going to. The truth is when you keep a gun for self-protection, you live with constant paranoia (妄想狂). For me, owning a gun and practicing at a target range would be allowing my sense of victimization to corrupt (毁坏) my deepest values. In general, people like me will be forced to consider getting guns to protect ourselves. I survived. I know my fear cannot be managed with a gun. The only reasonable response is to do what I can to help fix the mental health system. Awareness, education and proper funding will save more lives and relieve (减轻) more fear than all the guns we can buy.1.After inherited the farmhouse, who lived in it? CA. T he author and the author’s brother.B. The author’s brother.C. T he author.D. T heir neighbors.2. Which of following descriptions about thewould-be assailant is not true? DA. H e was arrested near the author’s house.B. He got a long knife.C. H e was a schizophrenic.D. H e was set free in court.3. The author is not going to have a gun because of the following reasons except that___B____ A. t he author know that his fear cannot be managed by a gunB. the author believes in the quiet and safe life of the villageC. t he author finds reasonable responseD. t he author doesn’t want to corrupt his deepest value4. “I survived” (2nd sentence of last paragraph) most probably means ____D_____ .A. I wasn’t hurt by the assailantB. I am not forced to consider getting gunC. I am no longer fear for my safetyD. I sticks to my belief and won’t get a gun5. The best title for the passage seems to be ____C_____ .A. L ife in a Small TownB. Would-be Assailant ArrestedC. A rming Myself with a Gun is Not the AnswerD. C onstant ParanoiaPassage 2Joe works for a large auto-insurance company. He thought it wasn’t hurt to leave the key in the truck when he filled his gas tank at a self-service gas station. But moments later, as he was paying the money, he saw the truck being driven away. In 1987, 1.6 million motor vehicles were stolen in the United States ---- one every wo seconds. If current trends continue, experts predict annual (每年的) vehicle thefts(行窃)could be more than two millions by the end of the decade.Vehicle theft is a common occurrence, which has a direct impact on over four million victims a year. The cost is surprising. Many police officials blame professional thieves for the high volume(大量)of thefts. It is a major moneymaker for organized crime.Normally, stolen cars are taken to pieces and the parts are sold to individuals. But as many as 200,000 cars are smuggled(走私)out of the country every year. Most go to Latin America, the Middle East and Europe.Only about 15 percent car thefts result in an arrest, because few police departments routinely conduct in-depth auto investigations. When thieves are arrested, judges will often sentence them to probation (缓刑), not immediately put them in prison because the prisons are overcrowded with violent criminals. One exception is Michigan program that assigns 92 police officers to work full-time on the state’s 65,000 car theft cases a year. Since 1986, when the effort began, the state’s auto-theft rate has fallen from second in the nation to ninth. How can you protect your car? If you live in a high-theft area or drive an expensive model, consider a security system. It may cost anywhere from $25 to $1,000. Some systems engageautomatically-simply removing the key disables (使失去能力)the fuel pump and the starter. When cars are equipped with such systems, thefts may drop by one-third. In some states, you may be able to use a device that sends radio signals, allowing stolen cars to be tracked by police.6. The passage is mainly about _____B______ .A. police departments’ routine jobB. vehicle theftC. security systemD. Michigan program7. The following are not the ways thieves sell the stolen cars except that they are__D___ .A. sold to individuals as a wholeB. sold to auto-insurance companyC. sold to AustraliaD. smuggled to Latin America, the Middle East and Europe8. The author predicts the annual vehicle theft could be ___C___ in 1989.A. 1.6 millionB. 65,000C. more than 2,000,000D. 200,0009. The way to protect your car from stealing is to_____A______ .A. have a security systemB. inform policeC. buy insuranceD. equip a special fuel pump and a starter10. The reason judges will often sentence the thieves to probation and not immediately put them in prison is that ______D______ .A. vehicle theft is a criminal misdemeanor (轻罪)B. the thieves have escaped to EuropeC. there isn’t enough evidence (证据)D. the prisons are overcrowded with violent criminalsPart Five TranslationDirection: Translate Sentences 1-2 into Chineseand Sentences 3-5 into English and write down your answers on your Answer Sheet.1. Those shining stars, he liked to point out, were one of the special treats for people like us who lived out in the wilderness.2. It began around the time of the Tang Dynasty, and then prospered in the Song and Yuan dynasties. With a history of over one thousand years, it has experienced constant development, improvement and perfection. The tools and materials used to create ink and wash painting, , brushes, rice paper, and ink, are characteristic of Chinese culture and closely related to the features of the paintings. For example, the mixing of water and ink creates different shades of dryness, wetness, thickness and thinness. The integration and infiltration of water, ink, and rice paper enables such paintings to convey rich images, and hence to achieve unique aesthetic effects. Ink and wash painting holds a high status in the history of Chinese painting, and it is even regarded as the criterion to evaluate the artistic level of Oriental paintings. 大学英语3重修复习资料Coaching Your Kids in Sports and Extracurricular ActivitiesMany parents ― especially fathers ― enjoy coaching their kids’ sports teams and leading children’ scout troops (童子军). It is a great way to get to know your child in a social envir onment, and to actively involve yourself in your child’s life outside the home. Sports and other extracurricular activities are vehicles by which your child learns how to interact with other people and how to observe the fairness of games and activities. They learn valuable childhood lessons during these activities, and who could blame you for wanting to be a part of it?Some children are excited about the prospect of having Mommy or Daddy involved in their activities, and others fight against it as though it were the worst thing in the world. I was a member of the latter group of kids because I wanted to express my independence and learn how to handle myself without the watchful eyes of my parents. I’m sure I hurt their feelings in my adamancy (固执)on the issue, but they respected my feelings once I reached a certain age.If you are thinking about coaching or leading an activity, it’s important to talk with your kids and determine their feelings. Find out how they react to the prospect of your involvement, and ask why they feel the way that they do. Your decision on the issue is entirely up to you, but it is still a good idea to ask your children what they think. But not matter how they feel, there are a few guidelines that you should follow when coaching and leading activities. These guidelines will help create a better relationship between you and your child, and prevent any problems from arising in the future.1. Treat your child exactly the way you treat the other children. As an authority figure, it is your job not to play favorites, which includes your child. If you favor your child above the others, you will create tension in the team or group, and the other players will become hostile toward your child for getting the advantage. It i sn’t that you should pretend that you aren’t a parent, but choose teams fairly and give everyone an equal opportunity in the activity.2. Make time for the activity. There is nothing worse for a child than to have their parent fail their team. If you commit to coaching or leading, ensure that you can meet every obligation and that you have time in your busy schedule to stay active with the group. If you think that you might have conflicts with time, then wait for another opportunity.3. Enjoy the activity. If you want to coach your son’s basketball team, but you hate the sport, then you probably won’t be very good at it, and you will make your son miserable. Coaching a sport just to have time with your child isn’t the right way to go. If you want to help with an activity or sport, make sure that it’s something that you enjoy and that you are knowledgeable about.4. Don’t tell lots of stories. If you spend half of practice regaining the group with stories from your childhood and how you played the sport, then your child will be embarrassed. Keep it completely focused on the kids during the activity, and save your stories for the home. It will make for a better relationship with your child and a higher team morale (士气).5. Be prepared to deal with other parents.Even if you coach or lead fairly, be prepared for angry phone calls accusing you of playing favorites. Unfortunately, parents are often more passionate about kids’ activities than the children, and you should be cognizant (认识到的)of what you are getting yourself into. Keep your cool and handle every situation calmly.6. Cultivate the talent of every child.Your job as a coach or leader is to assist everyone with their talents and to encourage everyone to work and play bet ter. It is not your job to be your child’s personal cheerleader, or to spend more time cultivating their talents than those of the other kids. Talk with your child about this, and make sure that he or she is comfortable with the scenario.7. Never take practice home.If you have a bad practice, or if things went poorly at the scout meeting, leave it on the field or in the community center. You can’t punish your child for the problems with activities. Home should be a place where your child feels safe and welcome, not a continuation of soccer practice. Leave practice on the field. Make time for the activity.Keep “War Stories” to a minimum.1. It can be assumed that the target audience of this article is parents.2. By doing sports and other extracurricular activities children can learn how to interact with other people and how to observe the fairness of games and activities.3. Your decision on whether to coach or lead an activity is entirely up to what your childrenthink.4. In coaching or leading an activity, you should be fair to every player.5. The worst thing for a child is that his parent leads his team to failure.6. Telling stories from your childhood and how you played the sport can help to stimulate thechildren and boost their team morale.7. As a coach or leader your job is to be your child’s personal cheerleader.8. When the author was young he fought against his parents’ involvement in his activitiesbecause he _____________.9. If you want to help with an activity or sport, make sure that it’s something _____________.10. In case any problem comes up during the activity, you should leave it _____________.选词填空Attitudes towards __1___ are changing in much the same way that attitudes towards night dreaming have changed. But over time, the American dream of owning a house in the suburbs has become an environmental nightmare .“Suburbs are laid out so that you can’t get to most places without a car,” says Phili p Langdon, who studied suburban developments in 18 states for his book, A Better Place to Live: Reshaping the American Suburb. Typical suburban zoning places houses at a distance from retail and commercial buildings ― making a car a necessity. With cars co mes air pollution; shopping districts with huge, paved parking areas; and houses fronted by big garages instead of congenial porches. Cars aren’t cheap, either. According to figures fromthe American Automobile Association, a typical suburban family has two vehicles, whichtogether eat up about 25% percent of the household’s after-tax income.Suburbs also use more developed land to house people than urban areas, because each family has a separate dwelling and yard. Most yard space is devoted to growing lawns thatare inhospitable to native wildlife. And per acre, far more chemicals are applied tosuburban lawns than to the nation’s farmland.Lastly, suburbs aren’t ideal places for socializing. Although the majority of Americans arenow suburbanites, “there is a lack of gathering places and community life,” says Langdon.“Life is more satisfying when you can get together with people.”1. B 3 D 4 D 5 CPassage TwoEarthquakes may rightly be ranked as one of the most destructive forces known to man: since records began to be written down, it has been estimated that earthquake-relatedfatalities (死亡) have numbered in the millions, and that earthquake-related destruction hasbeen beyond calculation. The greater part of such damage and loss of life has been due tofalling down of buildings and the effects of rock slides, floods, fire, disease, gigantic seawaves, and other phenomena resulting from earthquakes, rather than from the quakesthemselves. The great majority of all earthquakes occur on two specific areas, along the coasts of the Pacific Ocean and from the East Indies to the Atlas Mountains. But they may, however,it happens anywhere at any time. This element of the unknown has for centuries added greatly to the fear and horror surrounding earthquakes, but in recent times there have been indications that earthquakeprediction may be possible. By analyzing changes in animal behavior, patterns ofmovements in the earth’s surface, and other unusual phenomena, scientists have shownincreasing success in predicting when and where earthquakes will strike. As a result, aworldwide earthquake warning network is already in operation and has helped to preparefor the vast destruction that might otherwise have been totally unexpected. It is doubtful that man will ever be able to control earthquakes and do away with the destructiveness altogether, but as how and why earthquakes happen become betterunderstood, man will become more and more able to deal with their possible destructionbefore it occurs.1 Most destruction brought about by earthquakes is the results of the following EXCEPT________.2 Most destruction brought about by earthquakes is the results of the following EXCEPT________.A) the collapsing of buildings and the fire it causesB) the floods and huge sea waves resulting from earthquakesC) the disease that often follows earthquakesD) the panic brought about by earthquakes3 ”This element of the unknown” in paragraph 3 refers to the fact that ________.A) earthquake-related destruction has been beyond calculationB) millions of people have died during earthquakesC) earthquakes may occur anywhere at any timeD) there are other phenomena resulting from earthquakes4. C 3. B 4. B 5. CPassage threeQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage.Perhaps the most important defining characteristic of a human being is culture. The term culture as used here is not limited to operas, paintings, and other artistic endeavors. These are seen by anthropologists (人类学家) as examples of culture: culture itself is the customary manner in which human groups learn to organize their behavior and thought in relation to their environment. Defined in this manner, culture has three principal aspects: behavioral, perceptual and material. The behavioral component refers to how people act, especially how they interact with each other. Inchild rearing (养育) , for example, parents and children tend to interact in a relatively patterned fashion. Then there is the manner of perception, the ways people perceive the world. For example, parents have a limited range of ideas about how they should act, and what significance parenthood carries in the scheme of things. Finally, there is the material component of culture — the physical objects that we produce. Most of what goes into making up culture is a result of learning —modifying behavior in response to experience within an environment. Learning is practically universal among organisms. But no other organism has a greater capacity for learning than a human, or depends as much on learned behavior for its survival. While the survival of most other organisms is to some extent safeguarded by instincts, humans rely heavily on culture for their survival. People must learn how to live in a particular social and physical setting, biology playing but a minimal (最小限度的) role. The ideas and modes of behavior that constitute culture are transmitted largely by a complex system of symbols that includes language. Humans have evolved an extremely complex system of communication that is unique to our species. Without it the creation of human culture as we know it would be impossible.1. What is the definition of culture by anthropologists?A)Operas, paintings and may other artistic activities as a whole.B)Customary manners of behavior and thought related to the environment.C)Behavioral, perceptual and material components interacting with each other.D)The different ways people perceive the physical world.2. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer to each question. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Children learn almost nothing from television, and the morethey watch the less they remember. They regard television purely as entertainment, resent programs that demand on them and are surprised that anybody should take the medium seriously. Far from being over-excited by programs, they are mildly bored with the whole thing. These are the main conclusions which form a new study of children and television. The author Cardiac Cullingford confirms that the modern child is a dedicated viewer. The study suggests that there is little point in the later hours. More than a third of the children regularly watch their favorite programs after 9 p.m. All 11-year-olds have watched programs after midnight.Apart from the obvious waste of time involved, it seems that all this viewing has little effect. Children don?t pay close attention, says Cullingford, and they can recall few details. They can remember exactly which programs they have seen but they can rarely explain the elements of a particular plot. Recall was in “reverse proportion to the amount they had watched.” It is precisely because television, unlike a teacher, demands so little attention and response that children like it, argues Cullingford. Programs seeking to put over serious messages are strongly disliked. So are people who frequently talk on screen. What children like most, and remember best, are the advertisements. They see them as short programs in their own right and particularly way. They enjoy humorous presentation. But again, they react strongly against high-pressureadvertisements that attempt openly to influence them.On the other hand, they are not emotionally involved in the programs. If they admire the stars, it is because the actors lead glamorous lives and earn a lot of money, not because of their fictional skills with fast cars and shooting villains(恶棍). They areperfectly clear about the functions of advertisements; by the age of 12, only one in 10 children believe what even favorite ads say about the product. And says Cullingford, educational television is probably least successful of all in imparting attitudes or information.1.The study of children and television shows that__________.A.it is useless for television companies to delay adult viewing to the later hoursB.It is a waste of time for children to watch adult programs on TVC.Children should not watch television programs late into the nightD.Children are supposed to learn a lot from television programs2.“Recall was in reverse proportion to the amount they had watched” in paragraph 2has almost the same meaning as_______________.A.“the more they watch the less they remember” (in Para.1)B.“programs seeking to put over serous messages are strongly disliked” (in Para.2)C.“they see them as short programs in their own right” (in Para. 2)D.“educational television is probably least successful of a ll in imparting attitudes orinformation” (in Para.3)3.Cullingford concludes that_____________.A.children are excited when they watch TVB.watching TV has little real effect on childrenC.parents should spend less time watching TVD.parents should be worried about the effect of TV onchildren4.Which of the following is NOT true according to the new study of children andtelevision?A.Some children stay up late to watch the programs they like.B.Children enjoy watching challenging programs.C.Children don?t like serious messages and high-pressured ads.D.Though children like watching ads, most of them don?t believe what ads say aboutthe product.5.Whom would the result of the new study upset?A.The advertisers.B. The children viewers.C. The movie stars.D. The educators.Passage 2In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child?s acquisition(学会)of each new skill, the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early. A young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards theirchildren. Some maybe especially strict in money matters. Others are severe over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child?s own happiness. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency isvery important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality(道德). Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”. If they are not sincere and do not practice what they preach(说教), their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents? principles andtheir morals can be a dangerous disappointment.6. Eagerly watching the child?s acquisition of new skills .A. should be avoidedB. is universal among parentsC. sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD. will make him lose interest in learning new things7. In the process of children?s learning new skills parents .A. should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words theyreadB. should not expect too much of themC. should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them ontheir ownD. should create as many learning opportunities as possible8. The second paragraph mainly tells us that .A. parents should be strict with their childrenB. parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of thecommunityC. parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of thechildren aloneD. parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation9. The word “precept”( Line 3, Para. 3) probably means “”.A. ideaB. punishmentC. behaviorD. instruction10. In moral matters, parents should .A. observe the rules themselvesB. be aware of the marked difference between adults and childrenC. forbid things which have no foundation in moralityD. consistently ensure the security of their childrenPassage 3In many countries such as France, Greece, and Japan, it is more difficult for students to pass the college entrance exams than to do the course when they are actually in college and students who don?t have much money are at a disadvantage. Students prepare for these tests for years in advance. Often, students attend a private school at night to get ready for them. These private schools are usually expensive. If their families don?t have enough money, students can?t attend and they might not pass the entrance exams without this extra preparation. In contrast, students can easily get into an American or Canadian college —at least more easily than in other countries. American students take an entrance exam called the S.A.T.(学习能力测试). However, colleges do not only consider S.A.T. scores. They also consider a student? s grades and activities throughout high school. A student who has done well in high school will probably get into college. What happens when a student finally enters a college or university? Students in China, Korea or Japan might find their college studies easier than high school work. On the other hand, when American or Canadian students begin college, many of them discover that they need to work very hard and study seriously for the first time in their lives especially if they plan to go to graduate school.11. In France and in Greece, students find that .A. they don?t have to do extra preparation to pass the entrance examsB. private schools are expensiveC. course work in college is more difficultD. college entrance exams are more difficult12. From the first paragraph we can see that before entering college, studentsmust .A. pass the entrance examsB. study in private schoolsC. earn enough moneyD. do some course work13. In America, colleges usually take new students according to .A. students? grades and activities in high schoolB. students? scores of S.A.T. onlyC. both students? S.A.T. scores and records in high schoolD. students? objectives of academic study14. In North America, college students .A. study harder than they were in high schoolB. study as hard as they were in high schoolC. find college studies easier than in high school workD. find it easier to go to graduate school15. This passage is mainly about .A. advantages of college study in North AmericaB. differences in college education in different countriesC. American higher educationD. higher education in generalPassage 4Packaging is an important form of advertising. A package can sometimes motivate (激发)someone to buy a product. For example, a small child may ask for a breakfast food that comes in a box with a picture of a TV character. The child is more interested in the picture than in the breakfast food. Pictures for children to color or to cut out, games printed on a package, orsmall gifts inside a box also motivate many children to buy products —or to ask their parents for them. Some packages suggest that a buyer will get something for nothing. Food products sold in reusable containers are examples of this. Although a similar product in a plain container might cost less, people often prefer to buy the product in a reusable glass or dish, because they believe the container is free. However, the cost of the container is added to the cost of the product. The size of the package also motivates a buyer. Maybe the package has “Economy Size”or “Family Size”printed on it. For questions 1-7, choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D). For questions8-10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage. The sun shines on an empty Iraqi street. A Blackhawk helicopter circles overhead. The aromas of spices from a market fill the air. Suddenly, insurgents hiding on a roof launch a rocket-propelled grenade. The ground shakes violently and plumes of black smoke cloud your vision. Those images, produced when a person puts on a headset, are at the heart of Virtual Iraq, a simulation created to treat Iraq war veterans (退伍军人) suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (P.T.S.D.).By repeatedly encountering sights, sounds, smells and rumblings that evoke painful memories, experts say, veterans with the disorder can begin to reprocess traumatic events andbecome desensitized to them, perhaps suffering fewer side effects like insomnia (失眠), nightmares and flashbacks. The simulation is available to a small number of patients at sites including the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Manhattan, the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington. So-called exposure therapy, in which patients are asked to confront memories of a trauma by imagining and recounting it in painstaking detail, has long been a first-line psychological treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. But the bells and whistles of virtual reality may make exposure therapy more effective, said Michael Kramer, a clinical psychologist at the Veterans Administration hospital in Manhattan who is overseeing the introduction of Virtual Iraq there.“One of the symptoms of P.T.S.D. is avoidance,” Dr. Kra mer said. “Patients spend an awful lot of time and energy trying not to think about it or talk about it. But behaviorally, avoidance is what keeps the trauma alive.”“With virtual reality, we can put them back in the moment. And we can do it in a gradual, controlled way.”Virtual Iraq features two scenarios. In one, patients navigate the streets of a generic Iraqi city, walking past buildings, cars, civilians and markets. With the touch of a therapist’s keypad, a little boy might appear on a street corner and wave, apparently in friendship, or a man might stumble down the middle of the street calling for help, a sight that provokes anxiety in some veterans who have come to fear ruses. In the other scene, veterans ride in a Humvee(悍马). Other vehicles might slow down in front of them, and strangers mightopen fire. Enemy combatants might appear under bridges. Objects dotting the roadside might explode as the Humvee passes. The patient cannot shoot back at the insurgents and also cannot die or be wounded in the simulation. In choosing which stimuli to introduce, the therapist’s goal is to evoke the conditions present when specific traumatic events occurred, as accurately as the simulation will allow. Smells like spices, burning garbage or body odor can be emitted in four-second puffs. And the scene can be set to day or night, sun or fog or even a sandstorm.Given the power of traumatic memories, Dr. Kramer said, it is important “to go at a pace that the veteran can tolerate, so that he isn’t overwhelmed,” and he s tarts to realize that the memories cannotharm him.One risk of introducing potent material too fast is that a veteran could become retraumatized and perhaps unwilling to continue other kinds of therapy, as well. Not all patients with the stress disorder are likely to benefit from this therapy. Veterans who lack basic coping mechanisms, are actively having flashbacks or who have unaddressed problems with substance abuse should probably not enter the simulator, Dr. Kramer said.Dr. Albert Rizzo, the director of the Virtual Environments Lab at the University of Southern California who helped develop the simulator, said, “It’s a hard treatment for a very hard problem.” Dr. Rizzo first created a simulation for Iraq veterans with the disorder in 2003, by modifying the Xbox game Full Spectrum Warrior. In 2004, he and Ken Graap, president and chief executiveof Virtually Better in Decatur, Ga., received financing from the Office of Naval Research to develop the current simulation, with extensive feedback from veterans and active-duty members of the military.Virtually Better also offers a Virtual Vietnam, as well as programs to address fear of heights and flying, social phobias and addictive behaviors.Exposure therapy may not be enough for veterans with complicated symptoms resulting from chronic stress and multiple traumatic episodes, said Dr. Rachel Yehuda, director of the post-traumatic stress disorder program at the James J. Peters Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the Bronx.“I don’t believe,” she said, “that any study of exposure therapy for combat-related P.T.S.D. has shown a clinically significant improvement in more than half the patients.”“While I would offer it to a veteran in a heartbeat, I would be prepared for the fact that it might have to be supplemented with other forms of assistance like medication and social services,” she said.“If we’re too enthusiastic,” Dr. Yehuda added, “then people may expect veterans to be cured after 12 weeks, and it just doesn’t work that way.”Hunter Hoffman, a cognitive psychologist at the University of Washington in Seattle, said: “With thegrowing ranks of Iraq war veterans who have developed P.T.S.D., now is the time for them to receive effective treatment, not 20 years f rom now.”“We know from Vietnam t hat for most patients diagnosed with P.T.S.D., these problems don’t just go away over time.”1. A holler is a shout, but not an ordinary one. It is a cross between an Indian war cry and sweet country singing. It goes on at full volume in a long blast. The hollering heard at Spivery’s Comer, North Carolina, is really a revival of an old custom. It dates from the days before telephone poles marched down every lane. Those were the days of mules and wagons, instead of tractors and cars. The land was silent except for the sounds of wind and birds. It was almost lonesome. The loudest noise was the sound of the human voice.A mile or two removed from his nearest neighbor, a farmer would return from his fields and milk his cows at dusk. Then he would let out a special holler. His neighbor was to know that all was well. Answering hollers would come back across the creek bottoms and tobacco fields. The farmer wouldenter his cabin. There he would trim his lamp and read a chapter of Bible before bedtime. His world was secure.Sometimes the farmer happened to be late as he returned from his weekly trip to town. Then he gave another distinctive holler. It let his wife know that she should put supper on the cookstove. If sickness struck and the wagon was broken, there was another kind of holler. It signaled an emergency. “A dreadful sound it is, too,” said Ermon God win, Ir. His mention of holleringon a weekly radio broadcast had led his partner, John Thomas, to suggest a contest.Four to five thousand people came to the first contest in 1969. They stood in 100 。

If they can be correctly interpreted, we can come to understand ourselves better. Here, we look at four common dreams and what they potentially symbolize.2 I can see their laughing ughing at me. But they aren't as smart. If they were, they'd be up here flying with me! This dream has both positive and negative connotations. On the positive side, the dream may express a strong desire to travel and get away from everyday routine. It can be interpreted as a powerful desire to achieve. On the other hand, this dream can mean the person has a problem or is afraid of something and they wish to escape. The dream could represent an inferiority complex, which the dreamer attempts to escape from by putting themselves up above others.3 I'm moving fast now, but it's still behind me. Doesn't matter how fast I go, I still can't escape. Although this is a traditional symbol of health and vitality like the first one, it can also suggest the dreamer is trying to escape from danger. Usually, fear is the dominant emotion. By running hard, the dreamer can possibly escape the threat. However, they can also stumble or worse still stop moving altogether. This makes the fear even more terrifying. One possible interpretation suggests that the person is under pressure in their everyday life.4 I'm sweating and my heart is beating. I'm trapped in my own bed. In this dream, the person is often standing on a high, exposed place such as on the top of a tower, or on the edge of a cliff. The overwhelming feeling changes from anxiety to a loss of control. There is nothing to stop the person, and the feeling as they go over the edge can be horrifyingly real.Fortunately, just before hitting the ground, the dreamer awakens with a sense of enormous relief. This dream suggests that the dreamer is afraid of losing control and has a fear of failure or even death.5 The wind is pushing me and I slip. There's nothing I can do ... nothing I can hold on to. This symbol is associated with fear: suddenly the dreamer loses all power of movement. They try hard to move their arms and legs, but they simply cannot. Frozen in a terrifying situation with no escape, they become more and more terrified as the seconds go by. Another frequent context for this dream is failing to do something in public, often something which you are normally very good at, such as your job. Not only is this extremely embarrassing, but it also shows a deep-seated phobia of losing a job and a livelihood.1.The (long) Charles has lived in this city, the more he likes it.2.I wonder whether there is any (different) between these two projects.3.We promise (give) you a reply within five work days.4.That bank loan has (great) strengthened our financial position in the industry.5.That new model of the machine is not likely to go into (produce) before late 2018.6.Photography has changed our way of (view)the world.。

Part I Reading ComprehensionDirections:There are four passages in this part. Choose the best answer from the four possible choices marked A), B), C) and D) and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet One with a single line through the centre.Passage OneSatellites are an important part of our ordinary lives. For example, the information for weather forecasts is sent by satellite. Some satellites have cameras which take photographs of the Earth to show how clouds are moving.Satellites are also used to connect our international phone calls.Computer connections of the World Wide Web and Internet also use satellites. Many of our TV programs come to US through satellites.Airplane pilots also sometimes use a satellite to help them find their exact location. We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another. They are usually 35,880 kilometers above the equator.Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place. This is because it is moving around the world at 11,000 kilometers an hour—exactly the same speed that the earth rotates.A satellite must orbit the Earth with its antennae(天线)facing the earth.Sometimes, it moves away from its orbit,So there are little rockets on it which are used to put the satellite back in the right position. This usually happens about every five or six days.Space is not empty! Every week, more and more satellites are sent into space to orbit the Earth.A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years.Satellites which are broken are sometimes repaired by astronauts or sometimes brought back to Earth to be repaired.Often, very old or broken satellites are left in space to orbit the Earth for a very long time. This is very serious because some satellites use nuclear power and they can crash into each other.1.Which of the following is NOT done by satellites according to the passage? A.Sending information for weather forecast.B.Taking photographs of the Earth.C.Sending TV pictures.D.Providing food for airplane pilots.2.What’s the speed the earth rotates at?A.35,880 kilometers per hour.B.335,880 kilometers per hour.C.11,000 kilometers per hour.D.110,000 kilometers per hour3.Why does the satellite move around the world at the same speed as the Earth rotates? A.In order to take photographs.B.In order to stay in a certain position in the orbit.C.In order to move away from its orbit.D.In order to send television pictures.4.What does the underlined word ―This‖ in the 3rd paragraph refer to?A.A satellite.B.A little rocket.C.A satellite seems to stay in the same place in the sky.D.The satellite puts the rockets in the right position.5.Which is true of satellites?A.A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years.B.Every time a satellite gets broken,it is brought back to the Earth to be repaired.C.A broken satellite is never left in space.D.They often crash into each other.Passage TwoIt’s good to make mistakes, and here is why.First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that you are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things because when you are trying new things you are growing. If you never try anything new, how can you improve? How can you expand? The simple answer is ―You can’t‖. Look around you. With very few exceptions (例外), either everything you see in your physical world or every single detail of every single thing is the result of someone trying something new.Another good thing about mistakes is this: When you are making mistakes, you are learning. Consider this: Edison failed 10,000 times before he perfected the light bulb. When asked how it felt to fail that many times, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times, but rather had learned 10,000 things that didn’t work. Finally, when you make a mistake you are much closer to success. Why?Because when all is said and done, you will have tried some number of things before you succeeded. Every time you make a mistake you eliminate one of those things and are one step closer. But this all doesn’t mean that you should go ahead without considering the consequences of a mistake. Quite the contrary, when you try something new you have to be willing to set some reasonable limits so that in the event that it doesn’t work out the way you want it to, you will be in a position to try again. We all have limited resources in the form of time and money so don’t blow them all on one approach to a problem. Realize that it probably won’t be perfect the first time and allocate (分配) these resources appropriately so you can learn, make corrections, and try it again. Only by accepting and using your mistakes in this way can you makesignificant advances in your business and your career. There is an old saying that goes, ―If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.‖So go forth and make mistakes. And learn. And grow. And prosper(成功).6. From the second paragraph, we can conclude that _______.A. mistakes are unnecessary for developmentB. we are afraid of trying new thingsC. it’s common for peopl e to make mistakesD. mistakes are better than not trying7. The underlined word ―eliminate‖ means _______.A. avoidB. dismissC. acceptD. solve8. According to the article, one thing you should pay attention to about making mistakes is _______.A. avoiding making the same mistakesB. accepting the punishment willinglyC. taking consequences into accountD. trying things out one by one9. The article is mainly about _______.A. how to deal with mistakesB. what benefits mistakes bringC. how to achieve successD. how to make use of your mistakes10. What would the writer probably suggest we say to ourselves when we make a mistake?A. Never mind, I can always try again.B. I’d better stay out of trouble.C. Great! Now I can learn something.D. Look at this mess. Anyone would be upset.Passage ThreeIn this age of Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet despite the competition, my 8-year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a competition which she won last year.As a writer, I know about winning contests – and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection letter from the publisher. I also know the pressure of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn’t win the contest again? That’s the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and destroyed hopes can resurface in our children.A revelation (启示) came last week when I asked her, ―Don’t you want to win again?‖ ―No,‖ she replied, ―I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.‖I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously (自发地) told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly ―guided‖ by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it.Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade, I had to accept the fact that I was co-opting my dau ghter’s experience. While stepping back was difficult for me, it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough away to give her room but close enough to help if asked. The standards may be changed - no examination is perfect - but to have no external( 外部的)tests or examinations would mean the end of equality and of standards. There are groups of people who oppose this view and who do not believe either in external examinations or in any controls in schools or on teachers. This would mean that everything would depend on luck since every pupil would depend on the efficiency(实力),the ideal and the purpose of each teacher.Without external examinations, employers will look for employees from the highly respected schools and from families known to them - a form of favoritism will replace equality. At the moment, the bright child from an ill - respected school can show certificates(证书)to prove he or she is suitable for a job, while the lack of a certificate shows the unsuitability of a dull child attending a well - respected school. This defence of excellence and opportunity would disappear if external examinations were taken away, and the bright child from a poor family would be a prisoner of his or her school's fame (名誉),unable to compete for employment with the child from the favoured school. The opponents(对手)of the examination system suggest that examinations are an evil force because they show differences between pupils. According to these people, there must be no special, different, academic class. They have even suggested that there should be no form of difference in sport or any other area: all jobs or posts should be filled by unsystematic selection. The selection would be made by people who themselves are probably selected by some computer. These people are not just against school organisation, but are at war with the whole idea of modem competitive society and they are using children in schools for their destructive(破坏性的)purposes. There is no reason why we should allow such people to determine the way our schools are organised when it is to the obvious disadvantage of the pupils, of the schools and of our society as a whole.16. According to the passage, the writer thinks that ________.A. changing the standards could mean the end of equalityB. standards must keep changing in order to achieve equalityC. there would be no standards without external examinationsD. we cannot have standards because examinations are not perfect17. In the writer's opinion, what would happen if external examinations were taken away?A. There would be no more opportunities and no more excellence.B. Children from poor families would not be able to change schools.C. Going to a favoured school should be the only way to get a good job.D. Schools for bright children would lose their fame.18. The situation at the moment is that ________.A. many children who are suitable for a job have no proof of their suitabilityB. a school's fame is not important, as long as a child has a certificate.C. children attending well - respected schools need not get certificates.D. a bright child doesn't need a certificate a t all to get a good job.19. Which of the following sentences is TRUE?A. Most students from poor families can't get a good job.B. Some people are using students to destroy our society.C. The writer thinks it a good way to choose a job by computer.D. The opponents of the examination want to reorganize schools.20.
